Best way to replace a Sub-Zero door gasket

  • Door gaskets are an art! A lot of technicians do them differently, here’s how I do mine.
    Tools needed:
    1/4 inch nut driver for impact
    Impact driver with an extension at least 2 inches
    Blow drier
    Flat head screw driver (sometimes it helps getting the gasket bead into the retainer)
    This can be done with hand tools in a pinch
    1/4 inch nut driver
    Replacing sub zero door seal “gasket” tips:
    1) make sure your gasket is nice and straight out of the box. If you try to install a mangled gasket it won’t work well. Prep your gasket with the low setting of a blow drier while in the box, we want it evenly heated.
    2) make sure your gasket is the problem! Just because your machine isn’t cold doesn’t mean you have a bad door seal. A big mistake is removing a gasket on a warm refrigerator, the new one probably will add to your problem as it won’t seal right until cold again (if ever again)
    3) make sure your the “bead” of your gasket is installed into the door gasket retainer all the way around the door and not popping out anywhere! No missing screws!!!
    4) don’t over tighten your screws they will strip. If they strip I add a dab of silicon to seal the stripped screw hole and tighten as much as it will go
    5)keep the screws loose and smooth your gasket out by arranging it on the door into the best position possible before tightening.
    6)keep your corners tucked in around the edges.
    do what works, remove as many screws as you need. Some technicians remove the entire metal retainer.

    Remove all the screws and the metal clamp strips. Put metal clamp strips into new gasket when its on table top or floor. Put all 4 clamp strips on new gasket. Pay attention to corners.
    Place whole assembly onto door and screw in place. Much easier than trying to fight gasket into clamps while on door.

      I used to do it like this, but it takes much longer. I know some techs who still like this method, thanks for the suggestion!

      @@subzerorepair I completely agree with Maryeryan. We wasted a couple hours trying to force the gasket behind the strips. Then we found a video that showed it the other way. It took about 10 minutes to get the strips properly inserted into the gasket and then the entire assembly went up without a hitch.

    For my 251RFD machine, I've successfully replaced the refrigerator door gasket. The freezer door gasket needs replacing but is no longer available. Is there a method that would enable a new refrigerator door gasket to be cut, sized to the freezer door dimensions and rejoined before install that would work?

    My dad has a sub zero refrigerator and it is so so hard to open. If you open it once you have to wait for a few minutes before opening it again. Is there a way to adjust something so it it not so hard to pull open?

      No not really, we have our tricks though. Take a piece of white 3m duct tape and tape a nickel in an inconspicuous location on the door gasket where it meets the door. It won’t allow the unit to lock up

      @@subzerorepair so interesting. I'll try that. Thank you! I actually did put White 3M tape to cover up hairline cracks in the middle molded portion that separates the refrigerator and the freezer section.

    Hi - I just replaced my gasket and the door does not stay shut. Everything loos good and aligned.
    Could it be it takes time to conform to the door?
    Was hoping for a nice tight seal. Thanks

    • @subzerorepair
      @subzerorepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It happens. That’s why appliance techs charge good money for these jobs. You can find yourself in quite a pickle.
      You need to verify you don’t have any underlying cooling issue.
      You need to make sure the install is perfect.
      You need to examine the door hardware and make sure nothing is bent or missing bushings.
      Try to adjust the door on the top by loosening the screws and moving the door a little bit.
      If that doesn’t work, re install a new gasket.
      If it’s still not shutting well, the door may be warped and it’s time for a new door or new fridge.

    • @subzerorepair
      @subzerorepair  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pgreenx just needed to get cold. A common misconception is that there is some super magnet in the door gasket. The tight seal comes from the negative pressure caused by temperature differential. Ie the warm air meeting the cold air inside the unit creates negative pressure and this pulls the door nice and tight until the unit depressurizes.
