The EPA is not a part of the legislative branch. Fortunately my Harleys are carbureted, and already have non cat exhausts on them. I have tuned the carburetors so the engines run properly with the exhaust, meaning not too lean. I have no interest in performance when it comes to Harleys. I fulfill my need for speed with a race car on the dragstrip. For me it's all about the sound and that wonderful Harley shake. Unfortunately, newer Harleys no longer have any shake, and barely any sound, making them worthless to me. Just a few days ago I was parked at a gas pump in my car. After filling up my tank, I went in and got a cup of coffee, and went back to the car. The parking spaces by the front were empty. I was sorting through some stuff in the car, and when I was ready to leave, I looked up and saw what looked like a fairly new Harley parked there, less than 30 feet away. I was like, how did that get there? I should have heard a Harley pull up 30 feet away. I sat there and waited for the rider to come back out, with my drivers door window down. He got on, backed up a little, and took off. I didn't hear anything when he started moving. He rode by me about 15 feet away, and I could just barely hear it. My old '85 Goldwing made more noise than that Harley. Being nearly new, it had to have been expensive. I kept thinking to myself, why would anybody spend that kind of money for a Harley that had none of what people have always bought and rode Harleys for?
The EPA almost has 'carte blanche" to do as it pleases all in the name of saving the environment. We need an administration that has the balls to regulate the EPA.
Aircraft, particularly military aircraft have zero regulations about emissions . (ground vehicles are just as bad or worse as they get less maintenance and less well trained operators) It looks cool to see full afterburners applied but the pollution level is way higher than almost anything I've ever ridden (including Maico 490 that only got about 16~20 mpg but did less than 1,500 miles a year racing) If the EPA is serious about pollution, they need to look at everything not just easily regulated targets that are easy to find en mass at bike events.

New York State has made it illegal to have aftermarket (racing/loud) exhaust on cars and motorcycles, and many independent shops, as well as Harley dealers are refusing to inspect those that have them, because of severe penalties. There are, though, a few that are still inspecting them. This REALLY sucks, because people, like me, have had their exhaust done, and bike tuned, many years ago, and don't even have the stock exhaust, anymore.

They are cracking down hard on the companies that manufacture parts. I guarantee they pointed to the example they made out of Harley-Davidson to every parts manufacturer out there to twist their arm to comply.
This is all bad news for motorcycle freedom. The idea that this is going to have any effect on the environment is laughable, given how few motorcycles there are compared to other road transport & how few miles are covered by those motorcycles. Super annoying that the govt is now micro managing down to MCs and lawn mowers. There is a point of diminishing return - there will be little to no return on air quality for all of these restrictive regs and changes. In many parts of the country there is a limited riding season due to the weather. So they are micro managing a part-time, (and for most a) secondary vehicle. At some point it will either become too expensive or too much of a hassle to own a new MC. They are going to KILL the secondary market becuse whats the point of adding performance parts if they add little value due to the govt regs and restrictions.
All it's doing is driving up cost, less people can afford to buy them which in turn leads to less production. Then people lose jobs at all levels when the parts suppliers and factories down size to accomodate the lower production demand.
Funny thing, when I bought my 2001 FLSTF in 2002, it was slightly used with like 1500 on the clock, a few chrome pieces added and still under warranty. The bike came with new straight pipes. I had to go out and purchase stock headers and then I put on Screaming Eagle pipes to quiet them down as I put a fairing on the bike, and I could not hear my 150amp setup with the straight pipes. Then I bought a 2 into one custom pipes made by a guy in Hong Kong. I saw people were selling these 2 into one pipes on Ebay for like 500 and I looked into who made them and I called the guy up and it was some guy in Hong Kong how ran a custom chop shop. I paid him 250 over the phone and he shipped the pipes overnight. Crazy. I did this to clean up the area around the brake calibers on the back wheel. The 2 into 1 are actually a muffler with baffles and are street legal as far as noise is concerned. I still run the stock carb, though it has been rebuilt like 3 times over the years. This begs the question, lots of old iron out there. How are they going to come after us with our old iron. I also have a 73 XLCH converted to electric knee. My point is, my fatboy was illegal from the dealership and now it's legal or as legal as you can get in 2001. I don't see the state of Ohio forcing people to go through echecks / emissions for motorcycles anytime soon.
What the EPA did to Cummins and the diesel modifications. Put the blame squarely on Obama and the California Karen's and Kyle's. They were made about how loud the bikes were. They called noise pollution. Reinhart and V&H all have catalytics in them. Hell even the new Harleys are governed. Btw, the modifications that Cummins provided made those diesel engines more efficient. It was never about the environment or safety when it comes to the government. Especially non-elected government personnel. It is about control. Remember this saying about government and bills well here too. "If one gun law worked. We wouldn't need 300+ gun laws". When it is time to vote? Vote for your freedom.
If they push it hard and depending what state you're in you can't get it registered. Manufacturers can't produce, distributors can't sell parts that don't meet emissions standards. Hopefully it will be grandfathered in.

Of the six bikes I got only one bike has the cat deleted. I use this bike running at the Bonneville Salt Flats. If we could get the air/fuel set optimally with the cat then I have no problems with the cat. My biggest issue is on the fuel injected bike is has the throttle bodies closing early in top gear and artificially limiting the bike's power. The one bike without the cat definitely runs cooler with the rider and engine getting less heat soak. I can certainly get the the throttle body restrictions removed by reflashing the ECU but the first time you bring it into the shop and they hook it up to the computer the manufacturer knows the ECU has been tampered with and there goes the warranty. Manufacturer's I think are more than happy for the EPA give them cover on limiting modifications other than farkles.
That's going to be left up to states. The one good thing the government did was not allow the states to set their own emissions regulations. California being a perfect example as to why it was a good thing that went away. CARB was the reason that got taken from the states and we all know how insane that is.
We're lucky in Australia , it isn't that strict yet , it's only excessive noise that can be a problem , it's not uncommon for friends to share stock pipes to pass compliance 🤗
That's the greatest idea I have ever heard, a stock pipe share program to skirt the system... that's the American way or Aussie way we need to adopt here in America.
Due to the EPA restrictions cutting back on our HP, is that the reason we’re having larger displacement’s in today’s bikes? Makes sense to me… the M8 107 to 114; 114 to 117, 117 to 128. They increase their hp because they know we’re gonna change pipes, cams and add tunes. Wait a minute… does the EPA own stock in the LiveWire? Hehe
I do believe you're correct, more displacement means more power even with emissions equipment. For example the 120ST twin cam with emissions compliant exhaust and tune was a $6500 motor that makes about 100 to 110 horsepower with about 120 torque.
Making a new motorcycle uses a lot of energy, in fuel, electricity etc. That electricity is made mostly by burning coal. The fuel to mine & then transport raw materials to factories. The fuel to transport parts to factories etc. The fuel to get the finished product to dealerships. The electricity every step of the way through mining, factories, dealerships etc. Then we need to recharge the batteries in these new bikes, by you guessed it.... electricity from burning coal. Way less emissions by riding my Flathrad U Model chopper. P.S. My Flathead never came with catalytic convertors 🤣 Happy trails, Cowpoke
What happens is people push the limits more and more and officials ignore the (illegal borderline stuff) the manufacturers and people push it too far and here comes a big crack down it happens in all kinds of things that’s how stuff gets ruined. Burning coal 💨in a truck is a 🤪move.

(ground vehicles are just as bad or worse as they get less maintenance and less well trained operators)
It looks cool to see full afterburners applied but the pollution level is way higher than almost anything I've ever ridden (including Maico 490 that only got about 16~20 mpg but did less than 1,500 miles a year racing)
If the EPA is serious about pollution, they need to look at everything not just easily regulated targets that are easy to find en mass at bike events.

100% agree! It's time for change!
Good luck with voting! We can see where that’s gotten us!
@@GixxerFoo unfortunately you are correct!!
We can't save the planet; we can't even save ourselves! George Carlin
George Carlin was honestly a modern day scholar.
Fuel and engine development is key. Better burn and less “pollution” coming out the exhaust. Another well researched video-thanks for posting.
Thank you! The problem for air cooled bikes is those lean fuel burns create a lot of heat and adding cats to the exhaust they can't regulate temperature like a water cooled bike.
I’m curious about the 2026 regulations that REQUIRE remote shut off on vehicles will apply to motorcycles as well.
Imagine riding your bike and a cop just shuts it off. OR the bike itself shuts itself off because the bike determined you are riding erratically.
That's absolute insanity that could even be a remote possibility, no pun intended.
Do you watch Thrashin vlogs? They were riding a new 24 and it happened while they were ripping it up on the beach in Daytona and that was the first thing I thought. ECM/RDRS shut it down
@@Mainecat21 I don’t think they will stop there. I think the next thing will be that police will be able to download data from the vehicle on the spot to determine things like, maybe you were speeding an hour ago, and that will be enough to issue you a ticket.
There is NO 2026 regulations that REQUIRE remote shut off on vehicles. You pulled that outa your behind!
@@DennisMerwood-xk8wp yes there is. But don't take my word for it, Google or TH-cam search.
The upside is that stayìng stock saves LOTS of money for beer. 😂
Alright you got me there, I do like to sit in the shop and have a cold one admiring my Harley lol.
The beer is okay, but boring, uneventful performance sends chills 😨.
Enough rules already
The Vance and Hines short shots was an exhaust that produced a great sound. Do these new exhaust with catalytic converters change the sound?
On the short shots I would say it's gonna knock that sound down a bit and increase power with those pipes in particular.
Right to repair needs to become a universal law.
Swap meets will be the best place to buy pipes now.
That's exactly what think this is aimed at, removing manufacturing of non compliant parts is the goal. Next on the list is anyone who sells them, then they are after the installers being shops, then the private citizen in their garage.
All about the money. Always has been. Just do not comply
@@GixxerFoo agreed. The entire industry is down and the last thing it needs is more govt hurdles and road blocks
You'll own nothing and be happy! Right , Time to figure out how to deal with them. Thanks for sharing this with us.
They don't want us to own anything, they want you to rent from a big corporation that pays big money to the government.
How does this effect the home built chopper crowd, shovels, pan heads,Evo's knuckle heads, or does it?
If they push it hard and depending what state you're in you can't get it registered. Manufacturers can't produce, distributors can't sell parts that don't meet emissions standards. Hopefully it will be grandfathered in.
@@GixxerFoo I'm guessing that the biggest old chopper crowd is in California, we know how screwed up the California government is.
@@GixxerFoohad to jump through so many hoops just five years ago trying to go legit with my 81 fxwg. Had to drive two hours away just to get a vehicle inspection and had to explain to the gentleman that I knew the blinkers didn't work but hand signals were still legal. Luckily he passed it. Still ride FI more than carbed though.
Dont worry about all this bs epa pressure. Big changes coming and gov getting flipped upside down soon😂
Glad I got my 2 Brothers when I did. I'm going after a tuner in a couple days. My 2022 Street Bob is 6 months away from the warranty being out.
The way my jaw dropped when they wrecked those Street glides😮😥
Made me sick honestly to see it when I first saw that.
Those were proto types
Are you saying that there will be state run emissions inspections for motorcycles similar to cars and trucks?
P.S. My Flathead never came with catalytic convertors 🤣
Happy trails, Cowpoke
What happens is people push the limits more and more and officials ignore the (illegal borderline stuff) the manufacturers and people push it too far and here comes a big crack down it happens in all kinds of things that’s how stuff gets ruined. Burning coal 💨in a truck is a 🤪move.
I’m on my 4th Harley And to this day I have never had an inspection sticker for my bike’s. Got a speeding ticket several months ago and was never asked for it. I guess at some point I need to get one. lol
Lol, using the words "Harley-Davidson" and "performance" in the same sentence... 😂
Yeah it's a little cliche' but you gotta keep in mind we are speaking in Harley here lol
Soooo.... I've got non-cat slip-ons a new IC and manifold I intended for my dealer to install on my '22 Softail and tune in a cpl months. But is it now illegal right now for my H-D dealer to do a DynoJet license tune on my bike?
Technically it's been illegal for years, I don't see any issue why they wouldn't do it now. I think in the future they are really going to start enforcing it, at least trying to.
I heard about this last march 2023. A lot of dealerships won't tune any more, honda Harley etc . shops closing everywhere. Custom shops closing. Next problem getting down loads. I have 2 carb prostreet choppers s&s 111, s&s 117, vane s hines down sweeps no baffles. And then my wife wanted new harley fat boy , hand to spend big money to put in arlen ness monster sucker , tune , v hines pipes. Just got it done last march. Had to find people . very difficult to get stuff done. Sooooooo been buying parts like crazy for over s year.
You have absolutely been doing the right thing stocking up on parts! What you've experienced is gonna expand to more and more areas.
I am so ready to be gone from this world. So sick of this Government. I will not live a slave to these people.
This mite be a stretch but Harley and performance are total opposite!
How are people able to legally change their gender but we can't modify our bikes the way we want with whatever parts we want. World is really f up anymore
