- Harley-Davidson Motorcycles have one mandatory rule and it doesn't matter if it's a Shovel Head, Evo, Twin Cam or Milwaukee 8. You must control your oil temperatures, the oil is the life blood of the engine. The oil in your Harley not only lubricates the engine but also cools it. To master your oil temperatures you need an oil cooler, sounds simple enough. But there are all kinds of different oil coolers out there. Single pass, double pass, thermostatically controlled, non thermostatically controlled, fan assisted and many combinations in between. It's important to not only have an oil cooler but the right oil cooler for where you live and how you ride.

What oil cooler setup is your favorite that you would prefer to go with?
So I ordered a used take off Harley premium oil cooler for a dyna on the cheap. Only catch is I have to make a mount and a gasket. I’ll let you know when I slap it on cuz this bastard gets stupid hot now
I use a single pass on my 02 FXDL. It mounts to the side of the frame with small hose signature there. I have lived in the Southwest almost consistently as an adult and cold weather rarely becomes a problem. Good point on guys living in colder climates as they probably would prefer thermostatic controlled oil cooler to get the bike up to operating temps. Great work on these videos man. I have a 2019 Ultra, and no, it does NOT have an oil cooler.
We run the oil through our handle bars to warm the hand grips ,in the Alps here in Australia.

You forgot about the old school design I used to run on my stroked and bored shovel. Which ran really hot. I tapped the end caps of my engine guard and ram oil through it. No extra unsightly additions to the bike and it added about an extra quart of oil to the system. In cold weather I would just reroute the hose and bypass it. It actually made a huge difference in the temp.
That's going old school right there! You can do that with a shovel but not these new motors!

I did same with my 2005 Road glide. Wash DC metro traffic heat is crazy hot causing pinging & rear cylinder shutting off nearly every day. My Engine guard cooler with no thermostat solved all my too effing hot issues never over heated again! Cost me $65 and hold another quart of oil too. Old grey beard friends advised never use a thermostat cause when they fail they fail closed. Happy trails!
I've got 176000 miles on my 95 Roadking and never had a oil cooler and yes I've rode through the deserts of Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico.
Like Johnny said I've been everywhere man and no need for a oil cooler.

True but a cooler would have helped though. But a evo is an 80ci. I had an s&s 96 evo. That ran hot with a cooler. When twin cams were designed they needed a cooler. But went sideways with larger Finn’s to try to cool at 88ci. Then they got bigger. Big Bang big heat .. just my opinion. Just like insurance. It’s there just In case
Agreed. Ive sat in stand still traffic for far longer than id like on my old 88 and I never felt like it was an issue. Is a cooler nice? Of course it is, but for a normal Joe Schmoe rider its not 100% necessary. Its definitely more pertinent on the larger bore models that come later, but its not a do or die.
My 95 Electra glide has 136,000 no oil cooler
Back in the day we ran Ford power steering oil coolers on our pans a shovelheads ah the good ol' days 😎 now I run a Lockhart oil cooler with a flow control valve for colder temps it also mounts on the outside of the frame for maximum air flow.
I used that power steering cooler on my 82 wide glide. It worked very well.
I have a custom 98ci Evo style motor. I not only installed an oil cooler on it, but also installed a remote second oil filter that's clamped on the left front frame down tube above the shifter. They are both installed on the return line. The oil gets filtered twice, it adds a bit more oil volume, and the oil filter hanging off the front also helps with cooling. I have covers for the oil cooler and second filter for colder days. I've never had a problem with running hot. Normal temperature at the oil tank runs 150°. On hotter days, over 100° outside temperature, the temperature at the oil tank never runs over 175°. The temperature at the heads is approximately 50° hotter so my head temps never exceed 225°. Also, when coming to a stop after being on the highway the engine normally idles high, after a minute or so the engine cools n the idle comes down a coupla hundred rpm which means the engine is cooling off. On most engines at idle, they get hotter as they idle. The extra oil volume n second filter is the way to go. I'm not a fan of fans. I need my battery to start my big motor.
In cold weather you can always put a cover over the oil cooler easy as taping card board over it. Old school trick.
That's a good idea! You almost have to do that if the temperature lowest enough.
Shovels did that. But the thermostat ones are the go. I use them. Feel the cooler to see if it’s at running temp ….lol
For those using a fan assist, for the record the units that PULL air from behind the cooler, versus a PUSHER with the fan in front of the cooler, all things being equal, the PULLER will always be more efficient.

I have a JAGG on my 2017 Ultra Limited and in addition a DK Custom Oil-filter Relocation Kit, that works really well. Living in California I use Redline 20w60 full Synthetic Oil, on hot 85 - 95 degree Summer days the Bike runs temperatures around 200 - 230F., in colder weather it’s 180 - 200 F. I am also very pleased with my V&H FP3 which allows me to keep an eye on it 👍🏻✊🏻🇺🇸
I asked around some years ago regarding installing an oil cooler on my 2011 Ultra Classic 96. I was told by both a Harley maintenance shop and a Harley dealer that with a 96 box stock, I didn't need one. I did solve the problem of too much heat on hot riding days though, we take the car :)

Very good information, wish I saw this video a year ago when it first came out. I have a 2019 Road King, 107 stage 2 with torque cam. I went with a Jim's force flow fan and the jagg 10 row cooler (non fan) mounted on the down tube. I installed the oil temp dip stick after installing the Jim's fan so I don't have any comparative info there.
After installing the 10 row jagg the oil temp seems to have dropped 10 to 20 degrees depending on variable conditions (load, road, weather etc). The highest I have seen the oil temp go after installing the Jagg is 232°F, ambient temp high 90's, about 60 lbs of cargo and the wife on the back. Run was about 100 miles. The Jagg does work but not as well when stuck in traffic. If I were to do it over again I very seriously consider the Ultra Cool fan assisted oil cooler. I had a 96 Evo with the Jagg 6 row cooler installed for well over 20 years and no leaks on that one or this current 10 row one, maybe I just got lucky? Appreciate your videos very much, thank you.
When I was deployed to Phoenix Arizona (Luke AFB), while in the military, I threw an oil cooler on my FLHP upstate NY bike, which did a fine job, especially during the summer. (no thermostat or fan assist)
I don't have an oil cooler on my current bike (07 FXDC) and don't plan on it, seeing our spring and fall seasons don't seem to require one.

Arizona would for sure need one! Where you're at now that bike running hot wouldn't be an issue at all with the ambient air temperatures.

As a matter of fact, 4/1 it's been snowing all day, very lite with nothing sticking.
upgraded my oil pump and plate with an S&S on my M8 '19 Ultra Limited which already has cooled heads (which helps cool the engine) but the S&S pump and plate def helped cooled the engine a LOT. Last year I upgraded my '02 Fat Boy with a SE pump and plate - tensioners are now hydraulic but the upgraded pump and plate has cooled the engine so much that i have to let it warm up much longer to get it to run smooth. So my experience with pump/plate upgrades def make a huge difference in keeping the oil cooler too.
I have 83 shovel electra glide bought new.had a lockhart for about 20yrs. Took it off about 20yrs. Ago no problem either way…ride in Colorado…
This is where HD and the recip aircraft engines I work on are very similar. They are both as oil cooled as much as air cooled. Most aircraft have at least 1 oil cooler, many 2, all thermostatically controlled. They have a very large "fan" mounted directly to the crankshaft and 4 cylinders hold 6-8 qts. of oil, 6 cyls. 10-12 qts. Pilots running low quantities of oil has resulted in me changing many cylinders at over $2K a piece. Some aircraft oil additives may be beneficial to HD engines such as CamGaurd and AvBlend but I have never used them in an actual motorcycle. AvBlend DID fix my wife's 93 Civic which went 100K miles with no oil changes. It cured smoking and oil consumption and the car is approaching 300K now with niether of those problems.
It's a lot cooler at altitude and ya have a constant 100mph+ airstream. Not like sitting in snails-pace traffic on a 90%humid & 90deg day. A friend use to run Pennzoil(?) air-cooled aircraft oil because it was green and easy to find leaks.

I have never seen green oil but that doesn't mean anything. Sitting on a taxiway waiting for clearance to take off is similar to traffic on an HD......except for the big fan bolted to the crankshaft.
So, on my bike, 2002 RKC (original owner) with stage 1, never felt the need for an oil cooler. Years ago I bought a temp dipstick to monitor oil temp for the hell of it. I was always around 230 give or take 10 degrees depending on conditions. Mainly California/ Nevada riding. There were odd times when I hit 260-270 barreling along at 75 or 80 in 100 degrees. The battery died in the guage some 15 years ago and I never bothered replacing it. I had seen temps under enough conditions that my oil temp was no concern. I've always run synthetic oil which can take the heat better versus conventional oil under hot conditions.
I used to work at a place called peerless of America 2 and we used to make Harley Davidson oil coolers in Effingham illinois.
Now they're out business or being made by our buddies in china. How delightful.
The old H-D/Lockhart 3"x9". Especially on a Knuck thru Shovel. I still find them at swap meets for a decent price. Haven't run one on my Evo yet. I usually run a higher oil pump pressure relief spring since the pump is pushing oil thru a longer, smaller passage (additional 5-6ft of 5/16 hose and fittings) for a bit longer, especially when the oil is cold.
In the shovel head days they sold a cooler that would mount simply to the cross brace on the front of the frame. I bought one for my 77 super glide, seemed to work pretty good . I put the black one on thinking it would work better than the chrome. Also came with a naughahide cover for cooler weather. Wouldn't these work on my twin cam.
I've been working with ultra cool. And they installed the first oil cooler that's been made for the Indian Roadmaster. And it's been working great. They didn't have to do any modifications to my bike
Cold weather didn't affect the oil. Tested it and road bike. In 20. Deg. Weath. It done good.
You did a video about a year ago on cams for my 96 FLSTC heritage softail. Picked it up last year and it sat for like 15 years on a piece of carpet lol. Thanks to you I ordered my parts for my wood W6 cam upgrade. My 80 in.³ is it gonna be awesome, thanks to you I did this and I can’t wait to ride it when it’s done!!✝️🤘

Way back when we used to make our coolers. We just used an automotive transmission cooler. Hey we were broke . If ya had any money you used a Lockhart. If ya had more money ya used a Lockhart with thermostatic bypass. It ya used without the thermostat there was a leather cover to put on it in cold weather. I'm in hot as hell phx az these days. Some of my ironheads don't have a cooler. Solution? Ya shut it OFF at long red lights! That's fun when it's a kick start chopper! The other thing is you ride at night and early morning and park it after it hits 100 degrees here. By the way we see 115 degree days often. Try riding in THAT in. Afternoon bumper to bumper traffic!
I live in Phoenix also and it gets Fricken Hot waiting at grand and Northern waiting on a Train to pass thru !
@@michaelwilliams2232 man Grand Ave sucks. It was worse before they had the overpasses put in . Every street that crossed Grand had long long red lights. I figured out what side streets crossed Grand with no traffic light early on. They pretty much fixed that. We still have that stupid train to deal with . I get caught at van Buren 19th Ave and race to the next street to get passed the tracks often. I ride a motorcycle daily. Traffic sucks. Idiots don't see bikes.

I have an Ultracool cooler and I love it.
Actually it is mostly the Twin Cam and M8 that need oil coolers. None of my 3 EVO powered Harleys have oil coolers, and none of them run too hot. And I live in AZ. The key to keeping a carbureted EVO powered Harley from running too hot is to run them a bit on the rich side. Before I got my first Harley, I had owned 3 air cooled VW bugs. I found the same thing applied to them. If you ran them lean, they would overheat and even seize up. But run them on the rich side, and they ran significantly cooler. Yes, most engines run best (and make more power) when they are on the verge of being too lean. But that is not good for the engine. Since I don't care about power, I actually run mine rich enough that they make less power than they are actually capable of. But they still make plenty for cruising, and they don't melt down. My oil temperature rarely ever exceeds 200 degrees out on the road. That's WAY less than modern EFI engines.
Lean is mean and they run dang good lean just before they blow up. A little fuel goes a long way to cool those motors down, you for sure want to run the Evo a little rich. I've seen Evo's seize the rear cylinder from running to lean as it just flat got too hot. Front cylinder does fine since it gets more air but that rear won't hack it.
Use a High flow pump you can add 8 foot of hose and bring the temp down , I added a cooler . But was thinking I was Sumping took it off . It was Dragon man left cuttings in my Heads when he cut the seats and he stuck the valves in and used steel shot BB's for blasting the carbon off , it was the pistons got hung up the top ring was pinched talk about getting Jagged . I will add it again this winter for next year im still down .

That's one of the best things you can do is run quality oil and change it!
Oil can only do so much at an excessive temperature. If an oil cooler is added the oil helps cool too.
I used to use an automotive transmission oil cooler, cheap and plenty of surface area to keep the oil cool. I made an aluminum cover with a piece of 1/8th in black foam to cover it in the winter. I'm running a 90 inch shovel since the early nineties.
One advantage that the Oil Bud cooler has over the others. You have AN aircraft oil line fittings. The stainless braided line from the thermostatic controlled oil filter adapter. I can unscrew that line, drain the bulk of the oil from the oil filter ( less mess ) and you can lossen the locking collar for the 90 degree elbow fitting rotate it down and drain the bulk of the old oil from the cooler!! Less used left in the engine oiling system!!!
But what happens when you ride through those unseen gravel patches?
@@porkchopspapi5757 The Oil Bud is very durable. I have used mine for the past 10 years with zero issues. Gravel will not damage it because its not thin aluminum.

Great point! Adding an oil cooler does have some additional maintenance but it's what you do to do it right!
Lockhart on my FXDWG since the late '90's. Back in the day (my day) I believe they made the H-D oil cooler too....
Installed a Harley Davidson oil color on my 83 FXWG before taking it with me to Japan. Glad it was there when transferred to the Philippines. Still on my motorcycle. Have a tempeture gage on it too.

Disc Glide ? I haven’t seen one since I got my 83 Electra Glide. The price for the disc was $9000.mine was $6000.should have got the Wide Glide…Be Safe riding.
When I do my chem kit, oil, pump, and exhaust, I’m planning on putting on a naked ultra cool on my M8 Softail.
I noticed in your drawing you run the hot dirty oil to do your oil cooler first then through your filter I run mine through the filter first then the oil cooler less chance of the oil cooler getting plugged up
I own a Jawa 350TS, it is not necessary to worry about oil temperature, just ratio.
I have a 2000 road king classic, and I bought the Harley Davidson oil cooler which sits low in the front behind the front fender. I live in Oklahoma eye ride year round . Summer temperatures here can get over 100 and I could tell a difference in the heat that comes off the engine. My bike is stock except for hydraulic cam plate, and primary chain tensioner which is the Harley Davidson spring tensioner. The only reason I went with Harley-Davidson parts is because a lot of dealers will not work on anything that is not a Harley part, and if you are on a long trip that could be a problem.
I'm in Oklahoma too so I know exactly what you mean! That's a great point, a lot of dealers are weird about not working on something that doesn't have Harley parts on it.

The best way I found to lower my oil temperature was going to royal purple Max cycle on a 90f day in stop and go and 50 % hwy my oil is at 190 to 195 before It was at 220 to 235 I was shocked that the drop was that much
My 2021 Triglide is a wet head and it did not. I repeat it did not come with an oil cooler. Bad mistake I bought a jagg two-stage oil cooler in the oil filter, relocation mount and washable filter. Hopefully I can bring the temperature down. She is hot.
Overhere in central and western Europe, people have no oil coolers on their Harleys, because we ride only a few days a year in 85°F or more. Normally in summertime is between 64°F and 77°F. For riding in cold weather, I use those leather lower crashbar covers, to block some cold wind. Works fine for me om my stock Harley.
I could get used to some temperatures like that! Beautiful riding country over there from the videos I've seen, l'd like to make a trip over there one day!

I used the one at 7:15 from V twin 120 $ plus hose hooked it to the oil pump line then around the engine to the oil filter line . just using long hoses you can cool down oil the Snowmobiles been doing that for years for water cooled engines .

I feel ya 100% especially with hellish temps today but.... My dad's 81 shovel never had one. Still doesn't nowadays. But that's my creeper. Ain't speeding around on her fur sure👍

Sorry, but I've just never understood (other than profiteering) why Harley would strip almost every model they make, of ESSENTIAL PARTS that would tremendously benefit the bike or customer?! You shouldn't have to even ASK for an 'entry level' oil cooler to come stock, on a bike that you clearly state 'keeping your oil cool is essential'! Personally, I'd still upgrade to a thermostat-controlled, dual fan-driven cooler...but hey, MY BIKE STILL CAME with a 'base entry' oil cooler!

Great video, I'm a big fan of Jagg oil coolers, not only do they have tanks on both sides for extra capacity but it will send the oil to the filter first then to the cooler. Can't wait for the next video!

My OEM oil cooler on my 81 FXS came with a leather cover with a moco logo. My 15 RK OEM cooler I took the thermostat out, when it’s really hot why wait till it gets to 180. I’m in PA. don’t ride below 50 degrees much but when I do I just let it warm up a little before I ride & take it easy for 1st couple miles.
They don't come with cool stuff like that these days! How's it running with the thermostat out of it just free flowing?

Good, oil stays at 230 or below unless there’s a traffic light. Most of my riding is in Rural areas.

Great motorcycle people. I just took my 2007 Sportster 1200 custom for a ride and since it's about 58° here and Erie Pennsylvania reminds me of how hard riding a Sportster can be. I have intiminator front damping valve and new Progressive Suspension cruiser shocks and when it's cold it rides hard. After sitting for months during the winter I kind of think that's the sportsters biggest hurdle is its ride quality. I took the real wheel off myself and I couldn't believe how heavy it actually is I couldn't get it back on the bike I had to get help from the bike shop son because I didn't want to bang up the axle threads. When it's good it's good and today I'm kind of disappointed in it.
i dunno man ive been riding my 91 xlh1200 all winter this past year and havnt had any issues. starts right up when its like 15⁰ out my oil temp doesnt get much past 160⁰... mostly all stock, havnt had any issues with hard riding... in MD

I've been considering one now for few weeks. I'm leaning toward the under Mount as here in Australia i mainly do short rides and also due to having air ride on the front, it could get messy with oil cooler mounted behind fender. Keep em coming bro!! 👌🔥

I have a Pro-One Black Oil Cooler Kit for 1" to 1 -1/4" Frame & a Jagg Oil Coolers 4400 Oil Cooler Adapter For Harley-Davidson with Front-Mounted Spin-on Filters in my Old EVO It used to run at (temp in oil fill cap/ thermometer) 200*+F after that cooler it never goes over 150*F unless stuck in a traffic jam for 15 mins of gridlock. Its small & does a really good job on my experience. I would so very much use this again.

My owners manual states that my oil needs to be 230°. Does yours state that much lower temp?

As a general rule unless you have one with a thermostat if you need a jacket to ride then your oil cooler needs a jacket ! HD sold a jacket for cold weather riding with the cooler back in the day !

The Buell oil coolers adapt very easily or a hotrod catalog will have trans, power steering or oil cooler. A good fan trick is use a computer muffin fan. Cheap durable and small

I have a 2020 Tri Glide it did not come from the factory with an oil cooler.
I dicovered amsoil straight 60w for my panhead lowered my oil temp [under 200 deg f ] ....so I went with amsoil 20 50 for my 2003 flstc years ago and never had a prob........yet

Yeah I wouldn't want to cut the lowers on there either, the wet heads should help cool the oil temperatures down a little bit though too.
DK Customs makes one that doesn't require modifying the lower. Mounts on the frame, so the air-door operates as normal. Just leave it open...

Yeah they do! The keep the air moving which is the most important thing, that's your main cooling system there.

I have a 2021 Harley Davidson, Triglide, and it did not come with an oil cooler. I am adding a jagg oil cooler in the oil filter relocation kit gotta bring the temperature down
I have luv jugs as well as a oil cooler with fans and a power vision tune and stll runs hot. Nature of the beast. Good to know to flush. I will now it's bout 6 yrs old now.
They do run hot being large displacement air cooled motors but it would be a lot worse without all that!
my tuner let's me see my engine temp so added luv jugs mity mites because it's a air cooled in engine with oil cooler already.
That's exactly how I monitor my temperatures too is with my tuner, I love being able to do that!
I wanted to get an aftermarket fan assisted oil cooler but the $500 price tag gave me sticker shock. I'm waiting to see if another aftermarket company steps up to the plate and makes something with a more realistic price tag
They aren't cheap for sure, there's some on Amazon that are clones of Ultra Cool. I haven't tried one before so I can't attest to the quality and longevity of them.
My two friends and I have Evo Sportsters a and temp gauges. I am the only one with a cooler. I run 40degrees cooler than them in Phoenix ....where it counts.
You're in an area where you would for sure want a cooler and keeping the temperatures down like that produces more consistent power all day long.
What oil cooler set up are you running on your Sportster. I too ride an Evo Sportster with a temp gauge in the hot southwest. I usually run about 180-190. Forty degrees cooler sounds good. Thank you for any info.

What do you think of DK Oil Filter Relocation Kit Harley. They claim Improved Cooling.
I have that system on my 2015 CVO Rushmore. Not sure about the cooling part, I got it to make my oil changes easier and it does that. What I can say is that you have to be REAL careful about how you run the oil lines. I felt I did a good job with them but one did rub through after about 5k miles and the oil puked out quickly, every drop. The bike did shut off because of the drop in oil pressure but what a disaster. I wound up replacing the lines with high pressure fuel line from Jeggs which is a better quality rubber and steel mesh instead of nylon at a cost of $75 for ten feet.I then covered that with a quality wire loom and paid better attention to how I ran them. You have to run the lines down by the kickstand and rubbing against the engine case is hard to avoid and that’s where it rubbed through. When I challenged DK Customs about this they danced around it. With the cost of the kit, permanent oil filter and the Jeggs fuel lines the system ran me close to $400 so I’ll leave it on the bike and check it more often. Should it start to rub again it’ll come off.

Theoretically you would get improved cooling with the filter located away from cylinder, but it would for sure make oil changes easier with less mess. It's one of those little details I like, paired with other cooling tricks it all adds up in my opinion.

Installed a Ulta Cool fan assist on my 2008 Softail Custom last year and it’s the best investment. Did a lot of riding up the East Coast of Maine in summer time and tre temperature stays at 220 degrees. Big recommend.
That's awesome being able to hold the temperatures at 220, that's honestly about perfect where you would want to be.
Run coolers on all mine as you said but Harley with a thermostat… my FXDX has a side mounted one not fitted be me but I think more in the air stream. And thanks for the videos

For a rider in VT.........2023 Fast Johnnie Road Glide ST 117 M8.............Who once or twice a year might spend a week or 2 at a rally in traffic where it is really hot.............like florida, or sturgis..........Would a Jims Force Flow, or Ultra Cool oil cooler be better? I have a hard time beleiving Jims can cool it 100 degrees, when an UltraCool is only claiming 50-60 degree difernece.
First rule, don't buy a bike you have to mod to save it.
I've got a 2021 RG Ltd 114 twin cooled. No stock oil cooler. It's just gone past warranty so no issue there adding an oil cooler. The 254 deg F oil temp at 102 F ambient after an hour at 75 mph bothers me even for Amsoil. Oil Bud thermostatically controlled (aircraft quality including screwed connections not clamped and SS braid hoses) mounted under the engine seems like the best plan. My last concern to check is whether the twin cooled oil pump M8 (different part number to a regular M8) is lower capacity and might lose flow with an oil cooler installation. Any thoughts on this concern?

I just added a gauge to my 2005 Fatboy, and it answered the temp question I have had for the 7 years I have owned the bike. It was a $35 investment that told me that I am in the right temp range, at least for a cool/cold WA spring, saving me $100s for now.

Best way to keep the oil cool in a Harley is to ride in the winter in the north east of America!
On my Harley Davidson Sportster to up in August in Florida the oil temperature rarely goes above 200° according to the thermometer in my oil tank. 350000 miles later still has all of the original motor components except for the stator. It has been more reliable than in my wildest dreams. Harley had a Cool Running long lasting reliable a twin motor in the Eeveelution motor but the new bikes which run 158 degrees hotter for both the twin cam and the ma 8 both have horrible warranty issues that make money for the company. Because your warranty expires, or your warranty doesn't cover the specific failure. Or if they do cover it they put in the same crappy parts and failed the first time.
agreed got a 91 xlh1200 and shes dumb reliable. 300000 mi and replaced my clutch about 5000mi ago, other than that shes all original
