Welcome to my part of France, Occitanie. I am an American that has lived in the countryside outside of Toulouse for going on three years now. The area is littered with beautiful medieval villages, gorgeous farms, orchards and vineyards. Everyday I walk my dog along the canal and often bicycle on it visiting the local villages for lunch. Toulouse is a great city and the whole region is full of wonderful, nice, friendly people and delicious food. We are close to the Mediterranean Sea, not far from Bordeaux and the Atlantic Ocean, the Basque region, the Pyrenees Mountains and close to Spain and Barcelona. I do like to visit Paris but I really enjoy my day to day life here in the countryside of the Southwest France, Occitanie region. My favorite thing to do is to drive through the countryside to any of the beautiful medieval villages for a walk then lunch or dinner. Glad you enjoyed your visit it must have been nice to get out of the city to see the country and the beautiful Occitanie region, my favorite area of France.

Packed with beautiful medieval villages. in fact the Quercy area, embracing south of Lot, north of Tarn et Garonne, and you can extend it to a bit of Tarn (in short from Saint Cirq Lapopie up to Cordes sur ciel) offers the highest density of villages awarded the "most beautiful villages of France" flag. And it’s also very famous for movie locations : Le Vieux Fusil took place in the castle of Bruniquel, and Les recettes du bonheur (the hundred-foot journey) with Helen Mirren, produced by Steven Spielberg was shooted in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val.
@ericsicard910 I have visited 12 of the 13 most beautiful villages in the area. It was a goal of mine to visit all of them. They are all very beautiful medieval villages, also near Bruniquel, is a cave that has the oldest known, man made fire pits and drawings, dated to 176,000 years old

Not far from Toulouse, you have to visit the other pink city : Albi with its huge and beautiful brick cathedral (said to be the biggest brick building in the world), the Palais de la Berbie (Previous Bishop palace and nowadays Toulouse Lautrec painter museum )and the nice old town.
I would LOVE to do a canal cruise with you two! Carcassone is one of my favorite places. It's just phenomenal. When I was there with my mom and dad we had cassoulet for the first time and it was DIVINE! Fabulous episode! Will you be doing an episode in the renovated Notre Dame? Can't wait.
I visited Carcassonne a few years back and it was one of my favourite places in France. We also went on a wine tasting day, it was wonderfull. At the first vineyard, during tasting, we were offered a container to spit into. I asked the owner if he had been to Ireland, he said yes and he loved the Guinness. I asked him how much he spat out? He said none, I said keep pouring.
Yes to the cruise! My friend did the canal cruise with her mom a few years ago, and they loved it! It seems like a good idea, temperature-wise, to visit Toulouse and surrounding areas when it's cooler. And then you have the added benefit of fewer tourists. Thanks for sharing this beautiful visit!
En vélo c'est pas mal aussi le canal du midi, faut remonter a sa source, c'est un périple sympa a faire et il n'est pas nécessaire d'être un sportif aguerri, vous pouvez le faire en plusieurs jours tranquillement en profitant de la gastronomie locale
I love Carcassone, I stayed there in my youth nearly th 45 years ago and later with my own family, we are always facinated and we all adore un casoullet, sometimes i cook it at home, if i have a good peace of duck. The whole region occitaine is so pretty, le whine, l'Armagnac , the food, the fields of tournesol, the people and in summer the funny partys (les fetes) in every village.
I did a cruise on the Canal du Midi in 2001, what fun to go by boat ABOVE the summer roads clogged with cars and caravans. From Saint Gilles to Carcassonne via the Thau lagoon and further on the 9 locks. A good memory with my daughters.
I have friends in Occitanie and visit them annually. They live one hour from Toulouse and two from Carcassonne. I spent three nights at a hotel inside the Cité a few years ago, magical. Albi is another must-see town, an easy TER train ride from Toulouse. I really enjoyed your overview of visiting this area of SW France.

I spent a month last Summer in a small medieval town about 15 minutes from Carcassonne called Trebes. Every time I caught sight of La Cite whether off in the distance or close up by the Pont Neuf, it would take my breath away. When my daughter and German son-in-law came to visit, we took a drive in the country and stopped in Castelnaudary, where cassoulet supposedly was born. Naturally, we had to have it for lunch. So much flavor! Occitanie may well be my retirement region of choice.
next time you come - come over to Mirepoix - especially the monday market. Go up to Rennes les Chateau for lunch and back via Alet les Bains for the spring water and the house of Nostradamus. Go to Domaine de Baronarques for a tour of their medieval vineyards

Next time down that way, you should stop in Cahors and see Ponte Valentré, and learn about the Chemin de St. Jacques and its history in the region. The Lot Valley generally is worth its own episode
Magnificent, I have never seen such a copious and meaty cassoulet, France has so much to offer in the way of les chapelle, Basilique Wow. Good Stuff at Comte Roger, I'd love to taste some of those desserts. And la bavette at the restaurant on top of the market Victor Hugo in Toulouse.....Gosh you had a GREAT day there. I am hungry now.
I have pictures of my father camped with his army unit outside of Carcassonne after the end of the war in Europe. My wife and I visited Carcassonne several times ourselves.
Very nice video! Many of the camera shots in your video reminded me of fond memories I've have in this region of France. I traveled to Toulouse every year between 1985 to 2012 for work, many times going down to Carcassonne and the Midi- Haute-Pyrenees on the weekends. Southern France is such a beautifu place to visit, I think i'll try to travel back to Toulouse and Carcassonne again next year.

Such a sweet, warm simple time away to the SW countryside. Never been to Carcassonne but wish I had. We have Holy Hill, Basilicata for Mary, Help of Christians here and it is similarly romanesque. As a catholic kid, I went there all my life. Stunning. But the food of France including Carcassonne/Toulouse 🤗 unbelievable! Thanks again for the warm-hearted bucket list tour! 🖐Wisconsin 🍻
Love the whole area, we visited Toulouse and Carcasonne in 2014, my first ever trip to France. We stayed in a b&b in the Rosearie area and were made so welcome. We loved it so much we got engaged in Toulouse on our final night.
Carcassonne is beautiful, but avoid this place in the summer, and if you will come earlier, before 10:00, there will be less tourists. It is also totally worth it to spend a few days in the area, visit Limoux, go to the villages and the mountains. If you don't like the crowds- much better option.
Traveled there in 2010 with my son and walked thru the alleys?in the Castle- you showed areas I think I may have missed so it appears should I visit again to spend more time there. There just is so much to see and explore. The food looked so enticing! Thank you!
Another one of our favorites. Three visits over last 6 years and more to come. Carcassonne is magical and have only visited during October. Canal cruise could be in the future. Have talked about it for years.
Would absolutely love to see you d9 a cruise on a canal boat! Years ago watched an English food show with a tv chef called, Rick Stein, who did just that, and he ate along the way, showed the different regions. Ended up in the Mediterranean. Great way to see different regions, history, and food.

It wasnt a local architect who renovated the cite,it was the architect to the emperors napoleon 3rd. Eugene viollet le duc, the local ( bezier) architect build the canal was pierre paul riquet

I was supposed to go on a river cruise from Lyon to Avignon in October, but 4 days before we were leaving, my travel companion fell and sustained a closed head injury, facial fractures and was unable to fly. So, no France. I’d love to go on a cruise with the two of you.
This is EXACTLY the region/area I am targeting for my move to France in May-June 2025. I fell in love with Toulouse and the Midi- Haute-Pyrenees in 2012. I am open to other areas, hence a two weeks scouting trip in February, but I already am 90% sure this is the area I will select. Thank you for a lovely travelogue!

Haven’t seen Carcassonne in years (as I live abroad). I wasn’t expected to see Carcassonne in your video. I’m from toulouse but grew up in Narbonne(45 mins away). I love Cassoulet one of the best French dishes I miss Cassoulet 🥲. Toulouse also as it’s own charm, I hope to be able to visit again someday. Hope you had a great time visiting this part of France ^^ If you have the chance to visit this part of France again i recommend Narbonne, Gruissan, more in south part Perpignan, Port-Vendres, Collioure, more in the northern part Montpellier, Sète. You will also find great wine, sightseeing, history and food.
We were supposed to stop in Carcassonne between Pont du Gard & Toulousse. I was really disappointed that we had to skip the fortress as our quick trip turned into a massive traffic jam on the back roads because the freeway was closed. If you're planning on a canal boat cruise on canal midi, we'd love to do one with you! Now my husband is in the kitchen because you made him hungry. LOL

Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was the architect. Very famous in France for his renovations - some would say over renovations - of famous buildings.

I was supposed to go on a river cruise from Lyon to Avignon in October, but 4 days before we were leaving, my travel companion fell and sustained a closed head injury, facial fractures and was unable to fly. So, no France.
I’d love to go on a cruise with the two of you.

Our first French town was Narbonne (just to the east) so I know we'd luv this town as well.
This is EXACTLY the region/area I am targeting for my move to France in May-June 2025. I fell in love with Toulouse and the Midi- Haute-Pyrenees in 2012. I am open to other areas, hence a two weeks scouting trip in February, but I already am 90% sure this is the area I will select.

Haven’t seen Carcassonne in years (as I live abroad). I wasn’t expected to see Carcassonne in your video. I’m from toulouse but grew up in Narbonne(45 mins away). I love Cassoulet one of the best French dishes I miss Cassoulet 🥲. Toulouse also as it’s own charm, I hope to be able to visit again someday. Hope you had a great time visiting this part of France ^^
If you have the chance to visit this part of France again i recommend Narbonne, Gruissan, more in south part Perpignan, Port-Vendres, Collioure, more in the northern part Montpellier, Sète. You will also find great wine, sightseeing, history and food.

I was in Carcassonne 10 days ago (very busy because of a bank holiday in Spain) and it looks like we had cassoulet at the same restaurant!
We were supposed to stop in Carcassonne between Pont du Gard & Toulousse. I was really disappointed that we had to skip the fortress as our quick trip turned into a massive traffic jam on the back roads because the freeway was closed. If you're planning on a canal boat cruise on canal midi, we'd love to do one with you! Now my husband is in the kitchen because you made him hungry. LOL
