Thankyou for the vlog, really interesting. Carcassonne is my nearest town. I live just outside Mirepoix, which was built as a whole in the 13th century and is also a must go to cathar town in the region.

Pro tip: If you're on a budget in France and don't want to pay for a fenced parking spot, set your GPS to point of interests: cemeteries, or administrations.
The City of Carcassonne has both within walking distances, and by law French authorities have to make those free parking zones.

during the day it is often very hot and there are many tourists. if you do not have children or animals, I recommend visiting the castle in the evening. there are fewer tourists. The lighting emphasizes the medieval atmosphere. restaurants are open. very nice and comfortable. I also recommend visiting Carcassonne in the fall, for the above reasons.

During my visit years ago, I was told that the pointed wooden roofs on the towers were not original. That they were added when the buildings were restored in the 1920’s to give a more romantic/fanciful look to the castle.

Thanks for the info and some of the city is restored to maintain its former charm, but the bones are always strong and medieval.

Your Title is completely wrong! Carcassonne was almost completely rebuilt in the 1920’s. You need to visit Cordes-sur-Ciel further north. Continuously occupied since the 13th century!

I remember going to an exhibit at a gallery of Dante cartoons and other medieval paintings with a Canadian colleague, and she was stunned when I told her what the paintings were saying. When I told her, people couldn't read, if they saw a picture, they had to marry it with what they heard the priest say in church - so the picture tells the story. After she got that point, she was reading the pictures properly and never had so much fun in a gallery before, but would definitely have fun afterwards! History should be fun!
Beautiful place Almost makes me wish to renew my passport. Almost...

Yes it's difficult to imagine life in a world with a largely illiterate population or going to mass in latin, but you're right the pictures tell the story and make for a completely different experience. I'm glad you've enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.

Carcassonne is about 50km from my village,I feel it has been over renovated approaching Disney esc. there are very little original features apart from a Roman tower.
