    Folks, some engineering explanation here: Every car or motorcycle comes from the factory with quoted CRANKSHAFT horsepower and torque. This is because dynos vary, temperature and humidity vary performance, tire pressure, how tightly the bike is strapped to a dyno, and the dyno’s calibration. All these things can swing numbers at the rear tire. So manufacturers test the engine on an engine dyno inside specific environmental parameters. When the engine has to force all that power and torque through a bunch of gears surrounded by oil, bearings, sprockets and chain, and a tire down to a dyno’s roller, there will generally be around 10% to 15% power loss. This is just physics and is true for every single vehicle in the world. But because everyone dyno tests in less than perfect environmental conditions, and every dyno might have some minor calibration variance, different dyno’s will yield different results. The only reason to even bother with a dyno is if you are doing major modifications to the bike, so you want to get a baseline before making the changes to know how many HP you added. The crank number is irrelevant, all you care about there is the change.

    Dyno run starts at 3:27

  • @kuhndj67
    @kuhndj67 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    3:25 if you want to hop to the action. 190rwhp is pretty close to expected for the 226hp claim (certainly within the margin for dyno variation, condition variations and drivetrain loss). 189 for the Superleggera is also damned impressive.

    Really enjoyed this video and the fact that you mentioned all of the factors involved when putting a bike on the dyno. It does seem like your dyno reads 5 to 10 hp lower than most dyno's I've seen so 191hp to the wheels is pretty insane.

      just went on a dyno were a done up v4 only made 186whp and my r1 made that power. but thats also a dyno where s1000rr's barely make 170whp

      That V4 should read well above 200HP. WELL above. Believe me, I got a taste for how dealers "tune". They're shit. They're numbers are either hella low (and I mean like a 20HP delta) or they don't know how to tune... Period.

    Why does it sound so hi pitched ? Aren't V4 supposed to sound more like a V8 car type sound-is the only way I can describe- I had a Honda 750 V4 and it sounded like a V8 but a bike version. I don't know is the tune on the engine the case here?

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      whitehouse9999 No, a V-twin (L-twin in Ducati’s case) like the previous Panigale has a more muscle car sound. V4 at high RPMs tends to scream more. Realize the V4 has a redline at or near 15,000 RPM, much higher than the twin engine had.

      Ian Douglas Don’t know, but this dyno is always showing lower than everyone else’s. That’s why they call it a “heartbreak dyno”. Regardless, it posted 2 more HP than the 1299 Superleggera with full Akra setup. The absolute HP doesn’t matter, it’s the relative number against other bikes or before and after a modification that has the most meaning.

      IL MOSTRO thats all true the same Dyno with same Bikes and compare to eachother,if a bike make 200 or 185 dosennt madders the Diffrence between ono to other.

      Desmodromico Bad Ass The V4 is 1100cc so the new Superleggera is about 200cc bigger. Hope one of these bigger channels does a 2017 Superleggera vs 2018 Panigale V4 Speciale track shootout. Same advanced rider for best lap time!

      IL MOSTRO thats true i think also that Ducati with the v4 can grab also Costumer from other Brands and the Standart Version dont cost much more than other Competitor,it is without any Doubt the fastest and Strongest Bike at the Moment.And this is the first shot from Ducati because the v4 has a lot of reserve to make'it with any Generation Stronger and stronger,the highest rpm Range of all Bikes over 1000ccm and i am shure that the v4 R with 1000ccm can make easilly 15500 rpm and eaven more because the Desmodromik can make rpm that a Spring Valve can not do thats the Reason why Ducati is the only Brand in the GP ho use the same Valve System like the Ducati Bikes for Street all other Competitor have to use Pneumatic Valve only this allowed to make RPM close 200000 rpm like the desmodromik.Now with the v4 Ducati can show what is possiblle with the Desmodromik.

  • @giancarlomistretta7876
    @giancarlomistretta7876 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, you're right, but I trust in they where the difference is not so big. so, if three or four reads 200 and only one 190, I think 200 is the most correct value, don't you? I think that the dyno correction value is not good. an engine can't loose 35 hp to the wheel. I also know that the factory tell us 226 hp, maybe not real (they have to sell) 😉

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Giancarlo Mistretta I think factory crank numbers are probably true. And I agree, 35hp to the wheel is too much. I think true rear wheel HP on this bike should be around 200-205, since a 20hp loss to the wheel is still a lot but reasonable. Again, everyone gets caught up on the absolute numbers which do not matter since there’s too many factors between dynos (even the humidity in the air and how hard it’s strapped down will affect numbers). Best thing to do is to only care about the relative rwhp figures compared to other bikes on the same dyno done by the same people. For absolute numbers, you can only go off of factory crank Hp.

    • @mstegs5477
      @mstegs5477 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good video none the less! Ducati claims it's pretty close to the L twin in terms of torque! debating about trading in my 1199 for a S1000RR or V4. My heart says the V4 but my head says the S1000RR. I've had issues with my 1199 and the RR seems like a more reliable option. No doubt the ducati is the best looking and sounding, but the RR brings other things to the table as well.

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      m stegs Tough call honestly. Just remember any bike can break and have issues. If you really care about minimizing risk on that front, you’d get a Yamaha. But you like that EuroSex don’t you. Oh yes you do. 💦
      I’ve never ridden the RR and I know they are great, but you’d have to demo ride each to judge for yourself cause the V4 is insane. And since at the end of the day these things are toys, I’m just partial to the more exotic. Ain’t nothing more exotic (within $ reason) than a 214hp (or 226 with full Akra) Italian V4 engine with 16 Desmodromic valves... red sex.

    scusa senza offesa, ma credo proprio che il fattore di correzione del tuo dyno sia troppo restrittivo. da una moto di 226cv dichiarati all'albero (ok, dichiarati da casa madre), mi aspetto almeno 200cv... i tuoi 191 mi sembrano davvero troppo pochi. ciao

    Imo this just shows how good the 1299s with full mods is. It’s a lot lighter, way more tq way lower too. 1299 for the win for fun and street any day... I’m sure the V4s would work but man is the 1299s still by far my favorite bike. Wish they’d do a 1499 with super light internals and get it to rev to 12-13k. Would be perfection

      @ilmostro16  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kawicepticon I’m sure it was 93 octane, but our gas is 10% ethanol. Doesn’t matter anyway, every dyno will read different, what matters is comparisons on the same dyno, e.g. Stock vs modified, bike A vs bike B, etc. People should never compare dyno readings from one dyno to another, too many factors which can’t be accounted for such as humidity and how hard the straps were tightened, too many to list.

      Tyler Davbrad Swingarm is only on one side, the left. So the left muffler can’t be in the same spot as the right one cause the swingarm is in the way. They could both be like the left one but that wouldn’t look as good on the right side. Can’t see both sides at the same time anyway, so the mufflers not being identical doesn’t bother me at all. It’s actually kinda cool, just like single sided swingarms are so cool.

      misegades Sound is a matter of preference of course. Some love this sound over that of other bikes. For instance, most Ducati lovers find the sound of Japanese inline fours boring and like an electric motor. Except maybe the Yamaha cross plane engine, but then that sounds like a Ducati. What a waste of time. Where is the before and after dyno plot on the same day on the same dyno set up of the standard exhaust Vs the Akrapovic. Does the Akrapovic make more or less hp than the standard pipe? Does it make less at higher rpms and more in the mid range or perhaps more at the top end at the cost of midrange? Maybe it makes more everywhere, but why not also show the dyno chart for the standard pipe?

      R1 3:16 Yes it is 1100cc. But there's no other 1100 in this class to compare Dyno results. Really the point of this video is just the spectacle of the sound and fire, not so much the numbers. I wouldn't even care to post the numbers except for the fact that Id be inundated with questions asking for them. Everyone is too worried about the numbers anyway, probably none of us here can extract 100% of the track performance from any of these machines anyway.

    When comparing top hp numbers don't compare this bike to an R1 or ZX10R. That's just dumb. We all know those bikes don't make impressive numbers. Find a S1000RR that made runs on that same dyno and compare the V4 with it instead so we can have a better idea.

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tommy Gun Why is it dumb? The numbers from the R1 and ZX10R are provided for comparison. One of the MCC salesmen has an S1000RR with a slip on and it did 172 rwhp on this dyno, not sure that information changes anything here.

    • @JK-qj9qp
      @JK-qj9qp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IL MOSTRO This motorcycle is on another level so that's why I said it's dumb to compare it to a R1 and ZX10R which are basic and pushes out substantially weaker numbers. It's obvious the V4 would smoke those bikes on the dyno. So instead, adding in a S1000RR, and a H2 to the mix would make much more sense. Got it? Ok good. 🙄

      Tommy Gun Like I said, the salesman's S1000RR posted 3 less than the tuned R1 and 4hp more than a ZX10R. It didn't need to be added to the video since it was in the same range as those. I don't have H2 numbers from this Dyno, how could I post that? The point of this video isn't to compare it to every other most powerful bike but just to show THIS bike on a Dyno and the relative power it puts down compared to the other available information. The only reason I listed any other bikes is because dynos vary wildly in the numbers they will show, some higher, some lower, so there had to be some other available comparable from this dyno. Actually an H2 wouldn't make sense to compare since it isn't naturally aspirated and would post crazy rwhp figures like over 250. But if you have an H2 sitting around and a V4 with full Akra, please be my guest and post a Dyno comparison on the same Dyno, sorry I didn't have that.

    Great bike. But why do we have to endure three minutes of shitty music before hearing the bike?

      Mack Jew Wanted to also show the bike, not just go directly to the exhaust. Don’t you like seeing the bike? Sorry you hate the music, there’s little options for free TH-cam music. You can just mute it or fast forward. Thanks for watching!

    Right, but we must remember that the Ducati has 1300 cc and the Yamaha and Kawasaki have 1000 cc...

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Javier MN Actually the Panigale V4 is 1100cc, so about 100cc more than the other bikes.

    • @javier5622
      @javier5622 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In any case, it has a bigger engine. The Ducati is a wonderful bike but if it had a 1000cc engine the difference would not be so great

    • @ilmostro16
      @ilmostro16  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Javier MN Sure, the difference would be less for sure. Hard to say how much. This isn’t a competition, just listed the other bikes’ results as baselines for comparison on this particular dyno since every dyno provides different rear wheel results, sometimes very different from dyno to dyno. At the end of the day, all these bikes have stupid crazy HP figures that 99.9% of us will never fully be able to utilize on a track.

      The installation of the Akrapovic exit and the test results with the bike are spectacular. My previous comment was aimed at the Ducati brand in general and not at the test results. The video is excellent
