Coonskin hat story. I was 4 or 5 years old when these hats came out. My mother took me with her to visit her former boss's business in Portland, Maine. She was his 'Girl Friday' in the business & someone he depended on & was well-thought of. He was glad to see her & they were catching up on things. This was when the Daniel Boone were popular & he asked me if I wanted one. It was a distribution center that had boxes of them on pallets & he told me to find one that fit me. I came back to the office where they were, but didn't have one. He asked me why no hat. I told him I wanted one that was all fur & the ones he had were plastic on top. My mother gave me a look to kill. We walked up the street & we stopped @ a variety store so she could get cigarettes. While she was with the clerk, I discovered a box on the counter with golf balls. Golf balls made a cool bounce when they hit the floor. These didn't & by the time I tried 2 or 3 & they shattered, until the clerk came to stop me. They were trick golf balls & made of ceramic. My mother paid for them & she spent the whole time we walked to my aunt's house, telling me how red my ass would be when we got there. True to her word, it was the first thing she did. Not a good day for the kid.

I have a nice coon pelt. I want to make a hat exactly like this but with a tail. How did you stitch on the visor?

Hey Northeastern Woodsman, thanks for checking in with us ! Hope all is well with you. Sewing the visor on is not that hard, first you will want to skive down the edge that’s going to be stitched. Then pierce your holes. I apply the visor after the hat is all together and if you incorporate a sweat band, and I recommend you do, flip the sweat band down to do your stitching. About the sweat band, without a tail you can do a full band and with a tail l would recommend a half band from side seam to side seam. The band helps keep the hat from slipping down over your nose and protects your hat from the salts in the oils of your skin and the front is the most important area for that. I like to finish it off with a decorative strap or chinstrap to hide the stitches. I hope this helps, please feel free to contact me if you need help.
