Your guide through the lost arts and the forgotten crafts. Brian Stockman is a master carver with more than 50 years of experience carving all mediums from wood, to stone, horn, bone, ivory, and ice. He has a particular speciality as a scrimshander (one who does scrimshaw), carrying on the ancient art popularized by New England whalers. Brian has spent a lifetime gathering knowledge of lost arts and forgotten crafts, all of which he shares with you: From flint knapping arrowheads to making backpacks from Bass tree bark (during peeling season, of course), to tapping maple trees using traditional hand tools, to carving gnomes from deer antler, scrimshawing a whale on a whale's tooth, carving a loom shuttle from cow bone, and making a fur hat from an otter pelt (complete with hand made brass buckle), and countless other skills and pieces of knowledge.

@@jwmccorkle3250 I’m so glad you enjoyed the video, very happy to have you with us.
Should a hewn log be cured for a year or trimmed fresh?
@@ExploringCabinsandMines hello and welcome to the tribe. I believe the wood cuts better when it’s fresh and with pine you want to get the bark off as soon as possible or you will have pine borers in it, plus it speeds up the drying process.
Very interesting... do you have a video on how to tell ox bone (or other bone) from say a resin or plastic?
Thank you very much! We don’t have a video on that specifically but I can tell you that all bone has tiny ports or holes throughout to accommodate nerve and blood vessels. The ports vary in size depending upon how large the animal is. Plastics of course won’t have these. Thanks for watching and welcome to the tribe!😀
Thank you for the enlightening video. I come from a long line of ivory carvers based in the erstwhile Princely State of Travancore, now part of Kerala State, India. I have authored a book titled The King's Craftsmen, documenting the history of the major guilds involved in ivory craftsmanship, from the early 19th century to the 1980s. Among the significant ivory artefacts produced by the Travancore guild is the Ivory State Chair, which was exhibited at the Great London Exhibition of 1851. This throne was eventually presented to Queen Victoria. Thank you again for sharing these details.
Good Sir, I am honored to make your acquaintance and so happy that you have found our channel. I would love to sit down with you sometime and listen to your stories, very impressive legacy for sure, thank you for sharing. Sincerely, Brian.

You carve the same way I do I don't believe in cutting a piece off carving it and adding it back with pegs mine are a solid piece
@@tedlee7918 Hello Ted, yes I work in reduction mostly and will add a piece only when necessary.
Was wondering how you polish the hard to reach spots?
Hello Hungrimoon and welcome to the tribe. Somewhere l think I have a video on that topic, but here’s some ideas; I take things strips of wood ( I prefer bamboo because it’s splits so well and is tough) then glue sandpaper to the ends, you can then shape them with a knife to meet your needs. Or if needed I will cut long narrow strips of sandpaper to tread through undercuts and such. Then for steelwool I will unroll the pad and pull out strands to either twist up on a stick like a Q-tip or make cordage out of it for those undercuts. And finally I cut thin strip of deerskin and treat with polishing compound. Hopefully this will be helpful for you.
I knew I was saving my pork chop bones for a reason, great channel. Thanks for respecting the animals whose bones you use. Thank you. Keep on scratchin’.

Hello ytubeworld and welcome to our tribe. I’m so glad you found our channel. Whales teeth are regulated and can only be bought within the state of the seller. I find them occasionally in antique shops but I live in New England which was a major whaling area. Where are you located?
Do you think it's fine to send it over seas? @@StockmanOriginal
@@StockmanOriginal I'm located in the middle east Dubai.. Is there any way to get some of these 2 or 3 pcs if possible please let me know
@ WOW Dubai, so cool. Unfortunately I don’t sell raw whale teeth, and l’m not even sure what the regulations are for such a thing from the USA, but I have seen teeth advertised from Ukraine, Romania, and Indonesia. I don’t know what your country’s laws are concerning ivory but it might be easier for you to check out those sources. If you go on facebook look up “ Scrimshaw Collector’s Guild “ , there you should find some information about it. Thank you so much for being part of our tribe.
Did you make your belt knife?
Hello Soldier Drew and welcome to our tribe. No, I didn’t make that one. It’s an antique Sami knife which I treasure greatly. The blade is signed and the handle is made from rain deer antler.
New sub, thanks for the content. I look forward to seeing more of your workmanship as I explore your channel. I'm a retired carpenter and craftsman. I've carved pipes and other art pieces from granite wood and metal. A pipe I call peachy I pruned and shaped and caused Burl like grain while it grew in my garden, then harvested dried and carved. One question for you, with the long stem pipes you make, how do you clean out the accumulated tar after smoking?
Hello Steven and welcome to our tribe. Two tricks that I use for cleaning out the long stems are: one, take wreath making wire and double it over, then twist it up resulting in a loop on one end, squeeze the loop down till it fits the hole. Make sure the twisted wire is longer than the stem. Now you have a cleaning “ rod”. I use cotton string in the loop as a swab. And two: if the stem is really clogged just run the hot rod through it again ( best done out doors).hope that helps.
How can I get you to make a custom coonskin hat for me?
Stumbled upon this video this summer and thought it was really cool! Started finding some ash regen/branches and making some pipes out of hardwoods in my area. Found myself making pipes for friends, and I’ve recently started selling them too. Thank you!
Welcome to the tribe!! That makes my day that you have been inspired by our videos, it’s one of the biggest reasons why we are doing this. I would love to see some of your work. Thank you for your support!
You forgot to hide the chainsaw
🤣I’m old , how do you think I tipped the tree over?🤔
I guess 'Elder wood' stems are out of the question-poisonus to burn...🤔
I like ash but some of the nut woods work well also. I suppose one must research a little for the region they live in.
Gonna go bladesmithing wery soon as I always wanted, so I can make my own tools for carving, also. Because I really love to carve in wood. Although, I'm an painter artist. In the end I love all branches of art... I like your films, and special tools. 🙂👍
Thank you Ivanhoe, once you learn how to temper steel the sky is the limit. Good steel is all around us, l save all my old files and springs for making tools. I have a coal forge for bigger things but also have made a mini propane forge for smaller tools.
That's cool... I'm gonna try make my own charcoal, as well.
Thank you so much for sharing your craft The inspration is off the charts. I am going to a ren fair and i was looking at making a pip for a while now as a prop But i have been thinking in my older years i want to puff at times so started to research to build a real one. came across your Vods and they are priceless. People passing on Life means so much i really feel people take this for granted some times. Building something and able to hold something you make from your own hands has such a high Value these days. Cheers and thanks again!
Chris, l’m so glad you found our channel! If l can be of any assistance in your pipe making please don’t hesitate to reach out. Fruit woods work well for a bowl if you don’t have brier or stone. Cheers and welcome to the tribe!

@@peterstefanini7953 Thank you Peter! It sounds as if you’re off on a grand new adventure . Exciting that someone near you has some teeth for you, excellent! You know the nice thing about scrimshaw is, if you don’t like how something comes out you can sand it off and do it again, so there’s no reason to be intimidated by a tooth, just have fun.
That is very interesting, someone ought to show you how Australians do it entirely without burning, they just take the pith. :)

how many ways can we ALMOST swear but get away with it? How many ways can we ALMOST be funny and yet fall short?
What are you saying nunya?
Perhaps it's been mentioned, but look for low-alloy-steel wire for this if you can. Zinc (galvanized steel) and chrome (stainless steel)-fumes are truly awful. Welding instructors definitely drilled that into me. Thanks for an interesting video, definitely a sub!
u are so pretty
Thanks 😁
I wouldn't recommend using galvanized wire for this, the fumes are highly toxic when it gets hot and could leech into the wood
Yes, thank you for that. I have learned something from this.
