ohhh girlll... I LOVE this!! Canadian gal here and I always wanted a long fur hat.. woo hoo.. now to find my fur.. have scads of fleece .. oh so excited! thank youuuu!!!
Thank you Teresa. I made some more of these hats today with some of those scraps of fur from the beginning. If you like the pattern I suggest making a hard copy with heavy bristol board paper so you can easily make it over and over again!! Once you make one, it gets pretty easy. The more plush the fur, the longer that fur piece needs to be as the pile of the fur is inside the hat as well as your head. Let me know how it goes if you make some! Glad you enjoyed the video!!
You might not need to cut the piece so long going around your head as sherpa is usually stretchy and the pile not as deep. The fur I used in the video did not stretch so you might need to experiment a bit! Keep us posted! Tori
Good question! You will need to know the head circumference. That is step one. After that you can determine the different in percentage between the average size pattern piece and what you need to print the top piece at ... you are going to figure out a percentage and Custom Size the output from your printer at that percentage.
Are you able to send me a photo of the inside of your hat to our email madcaphats@gmail.com ? I need to see how it is lined in order to offer any advice! Cheers, Tori
This is amazing 😍 is love to see matching fingerless gloves for the longer fur... Would you make the fur go towards the little finger side of your hand or towards your wrist/forearm?
Very Interesting Julia! I think I would put fur on the back of the hand so it is decorative and doesn't hinder holding on to anything. Please keep me updated, would love to see you pictures!! Tori ps if you use short pile fur that is stretchy but the same color as your longer fur for the hat, you could do the cuffs in faux fur which would be nice too!
Hello from NW ON! Came across your channel by chance and SO wishing I hadn't donated my faux fur jacket bc I really want to make this! I really like the way you do the top .. well I like all of your hats really lol but am going to head down to my 'factory' and make your original fleece version. Thanks bunches!
I love Nw Ontario! Lived in Atikokan for five years back in the 80s!! Thanks so much for your comment! Heading to my "factory" now too lol! Cheers, Tori
Hello 🤗. Absolutely loved the faux fur pull hat. Would love to make one but I was unable to print the file. Where would I be able to get the measurements?
Hi Elizabeth ... our .com web address is in transition to a new domain host in Canada from wherever, but you can get on our website via the .ca .... www.madcaphats.ca or this use this link which is an index page. You are looking for the link called Furry Pillbox Instruction Package with Top Template. Click on it and save to your device until you can print ... madcaphats.myshopify.com/pages/summary-sheets-for-youtube-videos-in-pdf-form The measurements I use for the fur and fleece rectangles are in the description and or video ... the top is the piece that you should download. I want you to have success so I try not to transcribe too much anymore if I can just give you the piece.
Hi there! I love this hat and would love to make one. Would you be able to send the dimensions of the top piece of the pill box? I am unable to print the pattern from your pdf. I am using graph paper to make pattern. Using inches. Thank you!
If you email me I can try emailing you the PDF directly but basically it is a wide oval so you want to draft an outside edge that is about the same in inches as your top band measurement. You will want to incorporate the dart you will cut out as well. Email me at madcaphats@gmail.com and mention you want the top PDF and I will send it directly to you.
I admire your skills, but I have an ultra easy way to make a fur (or faux fur) hat. I buy a fur headband already made, then buy a fleece beanie in a coordinating color. You can sew them together, but I just put the beanie on and then pop on the fur headband over it. It's not a pill box hat but it is so easy and pretty cheap for those of us without great sewing skills. No one can tell that it's not a real hat.
Hi, can you please show how you do it?! I have been looking for a shortcut too and yours seem super doable but I'm not sure if I will be able to pull it off when it comes to making one your way, so a short video will be pretty helpful from your side :)
@@amangopal7659 I'm so sorry... I'm in my seventies and don't even know how to do a video. But it's easy if you just do as I said above. Just plunk the beanie on your head and slip the fur headband over that. I got the headband at Etsy and the beanie from Amazon.
You can download the actual pattern piece for the top and get more instructions, free of charge, from our website. There is an index and you click on the large type heading "Furry Pillbox Instruction Package with Top" to get the files. No info needed. Make sure your printer is set to print "Actual" or Custom Size 100%. The index is here ... madcaphats.com/pages/summary-sheets-for-youtube-videos-in-pdf-form
My stitch length is around 4. Use the length you usually use for sewing thicker fabrics. You might find the zig zag works well to prep the edges of the fur. Let us know what stitch length works best for your machine!
@@madcaphats I made one this afternoon, on my Husqvarna Opal 650. Aside from the final topstitching, my machine did well with this sew. I used a Woven Heavy setting in 4mm stitch length. I serged the inside with my trusty old Janome MyLock 134D, but I had to baby it over some parts of the thicker layers. I used a Luxe polar fleece from Joann (US) & I suspect that had something to do with it. The faux fur is also from Joann, silver/gray wolf. Thank you for a clear tutorial. Anyone should try this out. It's toasty, warm & wild!!
Just ease in the fleece as you sew around. The fur piece is not stretchy. The fleece piece is. It will stretch a bit as you sew around ... Use pins or clips before you start.
Hi Janine ... I use a large magnetic seam guide designed for sewing. They come in various sizes but this larger one holds tight when I have several layers up against it. Easy to move when you don't need it. The smaller magnets sometime need another behind the one you are using to hold in place if you are working with layers. I have both sizes. You can use on any machine that has a metal plate. I have one on my small portable machine as well as my industrial machine. There is a link in the video description that will take you to one I recommend from Amazon.

How do you adjust size to make a child’s size hat (specifically the top of hat) and also the band size. Thank you for the great tutorials.

Just ease in the fleece as you sew around. The fur piece is not stretchy. The fleece piece is. It will stretch a bit as you sew around ... Use pins or clips before you start.
