Hi captain, Aussie Truckie here going through my midlife crisis. I pulled the trigger on a brand new 2023 Mt09 SP with a at2 exhaust system and frame sliders with rad gaurd, literally just got back from picking up the original parts (Exhaust and tail end from the tidy). Picking her up Monday. Early Birthday present for my 38th Bday.....Time sure does fly... Feels like I was finishing my HSC yesterday.....And with the way the world seems to be going I just said F it I am sick of working and paying bills lol.......Your review on the SP was great to watch as well. Cheers mate and safe travels.
Hey mate, I just went on a 2 week solo road trip around the South Island. It was honestly the best time. The roads and scenery were amazing, and the people were super friendly. Felt pretty relaxing doing it solo.
Just looking at your route in the Sth Island you've missed the best bit, Arthurs pass is great but if you keep going down the coast to hokitika and Hasst, and come into Wanaka via Makarora you'll get some of the best Motorbike roads in the world. The MT09 will thank you for it.
I did 5,900km a week ago on my MT10SP loved the South Island roads! Fingers crossed the Haast pass is open for you, I hear it's great. Also north island "Gentle Annie" Napier to waiouru is worth the detour
Ah mate, i’m also Auckland-based and been seriously considering doing this myself within the next couple of months. Looking to develop the videography skills a fair bit and make it into a podcast (ish) format, meshed with some awesome footage and see where it goes. Some things worth noting after watching your vid (i’ve only just found your channel): - Any route available to cross from the east and west coasts in the south island, is worth doing. I’m talking Haast pass, Authurs Pass, basically anything with a ‘pass’ on the end of it is absolutely beautiful. I lived in central Otago (Queenstown, Wanaka) for 3 years and discovered this is a good hack. - take the road from Queenstown to Glenorchy and back. A dead end, but one of the most stunning roads in NZ. - if you can wait, i’d recommend delaying your trip to the tail end of summer or start of spring. Central Otago (arguably the most beautiful part of NZ) gets very dry in summer and subsequently brown as hell - everything is dead. For the first few weeks in spring, the rains come and everything becomes lush and green, flowers etc so the colours really come out and will look much better for the cameras. Happy to chat further if you’d like, i’m looking at picking up an MT-10 specifically for the trip and could even join for part of it, if the timing lines up and thats something you’d be keen on. Great stuff i’m seeing here mate, good luck out there 👍
Awesome, I hope you have an amazing time! I am also a wedding photographer/videographer and it is not easy to find the time, when the weather is good, people tend to get married 😂
MT60s aren’t offered in sizes for your bike they’re enduro tyres. A sport touring tyre like a Michelin Pilot road is probably a good choice. Plenty of grip, wears well and good in the wet
Sounds amazing. You can comfortably put a pretty large tank bag on. I have a big Givi (can’t remember the model) but it’s 20-25l from memory. I can send you a pic of it helps at all
Bro! This is just awesome and I reckon you've got a heap of peeps subscribed and behind you. Happy travels, man - ride safe - have an awesome time - can't wait to see the next vid :) p.s. I've got a Held Tenda that's doing nothing right now so if you want to borrow it for your trip - just holler. It's a great bag - you can use it on the tank or pillion seat - and it's easy to remove and sling over your shoulder if you're stopping in at a cafe and need something to carry your essentials in.
Nice one brutha! ... when you get to Christchurch; you gotta ride the port hills & summit road- the views and curves are fantastic! Me & my Tracer 700 bloody love it
I did a trip from Sydney to Cameron Corner on my MT09 SP. Hit every kind of surface from sand to gravel , my Shinko 705 tyres nailed it. I have a mod list in my bio if it helps you figure out what to take. Good luck, you will enjoy it!
Sounds like an awesome time bro! I used to really struggle to spend time alone until I started forcing myself to do it and I ended up developing a really good relationship with myself from it and now I enjoy my alone time as much as when I’m with friends so it’s really good you’re just throwing yourself into it. I’m really looking forward to seeing your trip bro, stay safe!
I can just imagine all the research you've done on the DOC website looking for camping grounds... It probably resembles my search history. along with watching every moto camping video on YT looking for ideas & what I can leave OUT of the luggage to make the Ride better (but a little transistor radio is definitely going in the kit. I need The Rock or Channel X!)
Hey mate, circumnavigated the SI last Jan on a MT07, ran a Kriega US5 for my tank. Held batteries, nd filters, camera etc. Going again this Jan to hit spots that were missed, will be running a MoskoMoto Reckless 40 on my mt09sp, pricey but the best bags in the business imo. If there's one learning from the first trip that I could pass on, dont wear a backpack & get ready to want an ADV when you get back haha.
This is awesome bro! I'm also in Auckland and I've always wanted to do a big tour on my 765RS, it would be awesome if you could upload your route. I'd be keen to use it as a reference
You have to "bite the bullet" so to speak, to work out what you need and the luggage requirements for a trip. I've learnt so much since doing my first away ride over a year ago, as to what I need and don't need to take, after my first trip. You'll get a good feel for it after the first trip and what you need to fine tune for subsequent trips.
Looking forward to following along. I've just purchased an XSR900 (won't arrive till January after some unforeseen issues) but this type of trip feels like something I need to do for myself. I'm in Wellington yet I've barely touched the south island. This looks like the inspiration I need to get off my ass.
I was coming to say this exact thing. My first ride on a bike was that road, and it was a steep learning curve 😅. Now I hit it every other weekend when I can. Plus, the blue cod at the fish n chip on the beach front is worth the trip even without a bike.
You will love the South Island, moved up north to Taranaki last year and I still miss the roads down their, and your right about the action 4s I just brought a second for the bike so cheap why buy a GoPro
Dude this video look so cinematic and ive seen quite a few of your vids and most are with the osmo action 4. You think Id be able to re create this with a GO Pro HERO 12? Looking at getting your LUT pack but not sure about the settings id use to recreate it. Thanks!
Probably bad timing..... Road work circus everywhere. Tourists who drive really slow. NZ drivers who are mostly pretty shocking drivers at the best of times. Extra traffic cops out getting revenue for the treasury and their christmas drunk fest. But....enjoy.

Do it mate. I have 6 road trips south done and planning the next one now. Stunning roads and scenery. Feeds the Soul.

I actually really like the wobble/vibrations in the osmo facing you. Gives a sense of the speed you’re going at!
Finally got my license and a bike, and the end goal is to trek around NZ riding :) bliss

Do it bro! I did the Burt Munro in Feb this yr solo and made some great friends and amazing riding. Going back next Feb with a crew.
Always wanted to do that one
@captain_midlife try find a way to ride all 3 passes over the alps. Haast is amazing.
Nice one brutha! ... when you get to Christchurch; you gotta ride the port hills & summit road- the views and curves are fantastic!

Yeah I already have a whole bunch of camp sites marked out from my 4WD adventures. Happy to share them

Enjoy your ride Captain Midlife around your beautiful Island that is New Zealand 🇳🇿 From the Sunshine Coast at Maroochydore Queensland Australia 🇦🇺
Awesome, from a fellow kiwi, hope you have an amazing time, south island roads are generally pretty good with incredible scenery
I'll be doing the same trip in March. Will be on an SP aswell 😅
Nice man. Mine might be in April now unless I can get ready for next month lol
@captain_midlife hopefully either is dry. I'd trust April's weather more.

Hey man. Some of these "solo" adventures aren't "solo". Subbed FWIW and stay safe!

Hi, I just wondered if you're getting the 2024 or the 2025 xsr900 that has some of the updates seen on the new mt09?
Jealous mate! looks like it'll be a good trip, might need to hit you up to do a mini one in the new year if this one doesn't put you off haha
Nice, south island is absolutely fantastic on a bike 👌
Bro! How were you able to manage the wind and exhaust noise while your visor is slightly opened? Teach me Captain! :D Ride safe!
If u like twisty road go to Akaroa it's amazing I did it when I went to burtmonro 4242km total
I was coming to say this exact thing.
My first ride on a bike was that road, and it was a steep learning curve 😅. Now I hit it every other weekend when I can. Plus, the blue cod at the fish n chip on the beach front is worth the trip even without a bike.
Used to be a lot better when it wasn’t a 60km/h limit over the hill or 80 out to little river
You will love the South Island, moved up north to Taranaki last year and I still miss the roads down their, and your right about the action 4s I just brought a second for the bike so cheap why buy a GoPro
SH6 between Rai Valley and Nelson is a great road if you want to take a small detour :)
I’ll have a look thanks mate
Tune in for an exciting adventure!
Dude you should let us other MT09 riders where your gonna be and when.. let us join you on sections of your trip for a giggle
For sure man
Dude this video look so cinematic and ive seen quite a few of your vids and most are with the osmo action 4. You think Id be able to re create this with a GO Pro HERO 12? Looking at getting your LUT pack but not sure about the settings id use to recreate it.

Yeah it look pretty much identical if you use gryoflow and the same settings
@@captain_midlife Ummm I may have purchased the DJI osmo 4.. Did I make a mistake haha?
@zachsingh2350 no that’s what I’m using
@@captain_midlife I meant as I already own a hero 12 haha. But do you think the osmo action 5 is worth the upgrade?
I’d be keen to meetup if you’re coming through Palmerston North
For sure man I’ll see what the final plan is
@@captain_midlife wicked man I have some stunning locations I can show you round here
You can’t miss West Coast & Haast. Inland is dull by comparison
where is the 1290 r ?
Sold that a long time ago. Thinking about getting a T7 Raid next
@@captain_midlifeWhy sold if I can ask?
