Stabiliser Heat Shrink Tube Mod Attempt

  • Thanks to Mitenolet, I got some shrink tubing to give the stabiliser mod a go.
Its a bit of a pain, but as I discovered eventually, the reason why its recommended to be trimmed to 6mm or so, is because if it is longer, on some stabilisers, it actually is too thick inside the stem and jams the stabiliser. So, you probably should cut them to that length unlike my lazy first attempt.
Still, its effects are noticeable, but not as dramatic I guess as they could have been perhaps? If you have the time and the inclination, it doesn't hurt to do it.

Do you think this better than the holee mod? Don't know which I should try.

The only issue with the holee mod is that the adhesive on the bandaid may come off with time and the lube soaking into the bandaid material. If it does and it moves, it can jam and go funny.
Shrinkwrap isn't going to have that kind of issue, ever.

Hey, my ducky stabilizers feel awful and sound pretty bad, I worry that I will have to buy a new keyboard and I don’t feel confident enough to open up my keyboard

Hi Serval, if you want to improve your stabilisers, unfortunately you'd still have to get inside which means opening up the case, and most likely also desoldering, which, short of you sending a keyboard to someone else to do it for you, you'll just have to develop some confidence or experience to mod yourself :)

You can lube stabs without opening the board, but you have to know exactly what you're trying to lube, you have to be able to see the wire in the stabs, and you have to accept that you won't be able to lube the elbow bit where the plastic touches the wire, but other than that I modded my pok3r without opening it and all the stabs sound perfect now besides the space bar, but even that was a huge improvement and sounds better than most of the stabilisers I hear.

How does it feel using this mod on stabs? Does it feel mushy specially when lube is added?

    • @theboard

I would say it did feel a little bit slower initially, but I wouldn't call it mushy, but over time its much much the same as the lube wore in..

@@theboard did it feel like that when you adjusted the length of the shrink tube? I mean what you showed on the last part of the video? I'm planning to do this on my plate mounted original cherry stabs since they still rattle even though it has been clipped and lubbed with dielectric grease.

@@pspspspspspspspspspspspspspsps The shorter length is better, too long and it gets jammed, so make sure its the right length to just sit inside the stabiliser stem.

@@theboard thanks for this. I bought 1.5mm shrink tubes since it's the smallest one I can find but I'm yet to receive them. Hope this would help eliminate stab rattle on my mechanical keyboard. I've been trying to tune them with dielectric grease but they still won't stop rattling. This is my last resort lol.

@@pspspspspspspspspspspspspspsps unfortunately rattle can be really notorious to try to resolve, good luck!

is this mod feasible in stabilizers on the plate?

    • @theboard

Yes, can be done for plate mounted stabilisers.
