    programming a midi in guitar pro and throwing it directly in Ez Drummer is a very good way to make grooves also.

    • @regdenee
      @regdenee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I do this! I start off writing with writing in guitar pro and the edit/using already played grooves that I edit so it plays the same notes I use in Guitar pro. Makes it sound more natural!

    • @jamrhein2
      @jamrhein2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wait you can do this? I recently got EZDrummer and I've been spending hours at a time reprogramming everything over from songs I did in guitar pro. You're saying I can just move it over somehow? Somebody please tell me how to do this it will save me literally weeks worth of drum programming lol.

    • @wreck-creation
      @wreck-creation 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also works for programming bass, I usually throw the kick drum onto the root note of the bass and start there.

    • @Dirk_Von_Dickshlinger
      @Dirk_Von_Dickshlinger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jamrhein2 You can just export the midi track from guitar pro and drop it right into whatever DAW you are using. I love doing this because writing in that form of notation much better 😁. Your original comment is a few months old so you probably found out how to do it already but atleast it is here for future drum programmers

    • @walterfreeman283

    To anyone that has Ezdrummer, try messing around with the different kits. You'd be surprised what you might like. I'm using the Dirty Rock kit from Ezdrummer vintage, with a few alterations, for Blackened Melodeath. Sounds huge and gritty

    • @DJskit24
      @DJskit24 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah otherwise it's basically triggering a trigger sounding kit which gets odd to me with the metal kits.

    not familiar with the drummers you mentioned - but that's the beauty of music, you can learn so much even from genres/bands you might never hear otherwise. re: SICK drummers - you should check out Hellhammer(Mayhem, Dimmu Borgir), Inferno(Behemoth) or George Kollias(Nile); even if it's not your cup of tea music-wise, these musicians are freakin' CRAZY talented!

    I use a midi keyboard and just hammer things in, do overdubs if necessary, touch of quantize and velocity adjust and I'm good. Loops are for cookie cutter.
    And avoid the Infant Centipede as someone else already said. haha

  • @chatter7653
    @chatter7653 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Ah yes...oh the many hours I have spent in a DAW painstakingly twiddling MIDI notes to try to create a drum track, very very similarly as to what is shown here. The frustration of having a pre-made MIDI loop(s) fit with ANYthing I ever tried manually inputting LOL....THE biggest drag of all time in recording into a DAW as a guitar player imo, is the drums. Someday, some software is gonna simply be able to listen to what I play , and come up with all the correct drum beats in the correct feel and I won't ever again have to bother with it, ha!

    • @keilanknight8513
      @keilanknight8513 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Get a midi keyboard and learn to play on that instead, so much easier than with trigger pads, no farting about with deleting notes etc. afterwards you can just rerecord, you can punch in and record bits in sections, slow down tempo to record fancier bits....all this clicking about is nonsense...

    If you know how to play drums or know how different parts of the set work, then programming it is a piece of cake, since you probably know your way around a drum kit. And also velocity. That too.

    When I do fill in, example rolling from snare to rack tom to floor Tom i usually write all midi notes on snare then try to mess with clicking the mouse to move the midi note to right place.

    I agree 100% about not using the pre-made grooves. They sound pretty neat, but in your songs, it just takes away part of the "you" that I like in my own songs. I want to be the creator, and not have it pre-packaged for me.

  • @halseyballistic
    @halseyballistic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Not too bad arranging midi drums. And to hit a crash not only can you use the bass drum but the snare as well. This bass/crash or snare/crash combo give the crash power. It's the rule I teach my drum students

    Everyone always says leaving notes out of time gives a human element or 'feel'.. I disagree, I think you can put drum notes exactly on the grid and still have it sounding natural.. it's more about what the pattern actually includes, like ghost notes and varied velocities, and what else is happening in the mix

    How do you figure out bpm and time signature for your riffs? Wish you'd cover this in your theory corner (which is really cool btw). I have lots of issues with bpm/time signature decisions. Sometimes riffs work in multiple different signatures at different bpm and it's so hard to choose the right one.

    • @neurosin
      @neurosin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just tap your foot to your riff and then in many metronome's and DAW's you just tap it in. There should be a (TAP) button near the BPM. Time signature is straight forward. Just put it at 4/4 but only use one sound for the click and forget about it. LOL

    • @AlexRoxjar
      @AlexRoxjar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I usually able to figure out the initial bpm, it's just the later bpm and signature combination I can't figure out for drum parts. It's a neat idea to just forget about time signature I guess, and write in the drums disregarding any bars. I'll try that.

    • @Fitheach81
      @Fitheach81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AlexRoxjar - If it's 4/4 you can create a basic drum pattern and just speed up or down the bpm. If 4/4 isn't working out, use either a metronome or click and just change the time sig until it fits. You should know when it's right as it'll fall into place

      I got a iPad Pro, & have been looping the pieces together from HD Drums (or Drums HD?), into Cubasis. Cubasis is fine, but the drum loops are difficult as they vary so much. Too different for the same song. It'll just be a demo to pitch for Indy support, I suppose. Maybe in the near future I can afford a decent PC (back to the dark ages), & get a copy of a decent e-drummer software program to get it right. Thx much for your advise.

    • @IllusionaryFuneral
      @IllusionaryFuneral 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To add on to what Joe said, drummers also have their own taste in music that may not match yours, so it’s hard to find a GOOD drummer that is punctual AND wants to play the same music you do. Pretty tall order if you ask me. Nobody in Colorado wants to play high speed Blackened Melodeath, that’s for sure.

    Here's a fun thought. LEARN TO PLAY DRUMS!! you are everything wrong with "music" slate 5 slate 5. pick up some sticks (7a) if your a delicate little twinkie) and an evans practice pad and put in the effort.

      Better idea: do whatever you want and don’t listen to sad trolls on the internet. This is a tutorial that you clicked on called How To Program Drums, why the fuck would you do that if you feel that way?
