This method has helped so much! Your concept of recording the separate parts and then getting the drum parts for each section done before piecing it all together was what I needed to give me a way to get things moving quicker. I usually take forever to get things down and then I lose the drive to complete it because of all the time spent. Thank you for very clearly laying out your process.
I find that opening a midi track and write on it directly would be quicker and more effective, but probably all those midi presets would be good if you feel like writing the other way around, meaning finding an inspiring drum loop and playing/jamming on top of it.
@HamleTrex what you can do is hear it in your head and use your phone to record you making the sound, or "singing" the sound so you don't forget. Then as the above person stated, work it out on the neck until you've got it. Record that and then you're good to go.
That was good. I just saw you on a vid about studio one! Then I saw the key words “SD3 “. And it’s you again. Funny. Anyway, I subscribed because as a musician you’re doing what I want to do basically. Btw, those were great metal beats. I’m really new to all this. Im 70. I played pro from 67-84. I finally got burned out. And worse. When I was 50 I went back to school and that was the first time I ever touched a computer! You’re young and have used one all your life. Working with my ez2 these last two months has made it much easier for me to understand you when talking about SD3. It’s so much better. Can’t wait. I was in a lot of rock bands back in the day and my album from 1971 is on Spotify and TH-cam ( no vid) . Just type in “Peace & Quiet “. I’m Greg Williams the Drummer. I was 21! WOW. Long time ago. I still play in my house almost everyday and am going to buy Jobeky edrums and cymbals. That with the SD3 is killer! Listen to Luke Olsen or josh Cameron. They do TH-cam covers with Jobeky kits. You seem like a person I could talk to easily so I subscribed and I’ll be watching for more SD3 stuff. About the daw. I don’t know how important that will be for me. I’ll have to wait and see. I guess basically to record live, right? Having the Presonus interface will give me pristine samples from the Roland TD-30 to my computer. Then mix. I think it might be easier inside SD3. I watch Mike Luke too. He’s got as many ezx and SDX as you...a lot! Thanks. Later.
To be honest , i never used grove section ! i compose everything from scratch ! how i get inspired , i listen a lot to bands . and i watch drums covers ! as guitarist this how i get inspired and grow my knowledge about how to write drums . thank u for the tips
This video is priceless. It gave me a great introduction to what SD3 can do and now that I've bought it I'm, rewatching this so that I can see exactly what you did and use parts of that for my own workflow. I thank the gods for heavy metal. Love to all
Fluff, this is AWESOME. Thank you. There's a ton out there around mixing as a producer who plays guitar, but not a ton out there around a guitarist that produces. This is great and will help with my production flow and layouts. Thank you!
Fluff... dude!! You are the best man!! You are an extremely amazing teacher! Seriously bro! (Plugs in history here) And I am amazed at how easy and enjoyable you made this tutorial. All your vids slam, but I am astounded at how wonderfully you convey your message while “teaching”. Please do more of these tutorials man. This is the best TH-cam video I have viewed in a long damn time. As an experienced guitarist, whose proudest (creative lol) achievement is a moderately successful rock band, I am absolutely completely interested in learning composition methods from a master like yourself! You have an amazing way of delivering the goods. I know you have a wide variety of vids, which all kick @$$, but I am making a formal request nearly begging you to start a series just like the vid here. I will gladly pay for something that is, in my opinion, to the point of priceless as it is such a seamless instructional rarity. So basically, please?? Lol!
So informative as always, it changed my thinking on the songwritting with SD3, and i like the way you describe the process then to "rewrite" the guitar track to stick more on drums, like you can do with "real people" in a jam session. Thank you
Ryan this was sent to Ola but you should see it too: Hey Ola, I just wanna say all you guys from the Anderton's boys (All of them) and Glen Fricker, Stevie T, Sarah Longfield, Rob Scallon, Henning, Ryan Bruce, and Jared Dines, Thank you for all your hard work. You guys are my Inspiration.
I don't comment much. I'm a long time guitar player, and I'd like to let you know, I find your videos to be very help full. I've had SD3 a few years now and this really gave me a way to understand it better. Anyway, Thanks Fluff.
THANK YOU! This has been one that always makes me feel daunted when recording, and I was clearly overthinking the steps. Thank you for breaking it down Fluff. Helped a ton!
Yeesh, all these comments, "Doesn't sound as good as a real drummer." No shit. Not only have we not developed an AI that plays drums better than humans yet, but fluff didn't spend 12 hours fiddling with hit velocities and nudging timing around by +/-2ms because IT'S A DEMO. Not the point, you doorknobs. Thanks for the walkthrough fluff, informative as always
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm just getting started in music production and I realize I have a lot to learn. I appreciate guys like you that take the time to teach us noobs!
Thanks for this video! I've been playing guitar for 35 years. I took up drums about 12 years ago with a Roland ekit. I like other guitarists got tired of drummers, so just become one...lol. I've been using Superior since the beginning, but since I was actually playing the drums, never bothered much with the midi grooves. I've got tons of them but never touch them. I've just been having a hard time being creative by myself in that I'd lay down a riff to a metronome in Reaper, then try to lay down a drum groove to it. I just recently started playing with the midi grooves, and watching your video helped me really figure out how to get ideas down quick. I still plan to play all the drums myself on the final recording, but it's nice to get a rough idea down quickly.
@Ryan Bruce. I find it's much easier to edit the loops within the plugin rather than copying them to the DAW track. This makes it much easier to edit (IMO). Another tip is to drag the loop you are considering right onto the Tap 2 Find icon. That will give you countless similar options. That's how I did our EPs. Enter shameless plug for EP here...please check out our videos. :)
You sold me on this. I can really get the vibe and see my creativity flowing with something like this. This is so much better than the superior drummer 2 that I have. Thanks for making this video. Very cool. Keep the cool videos coming.
Thank you very much Fluff. Straight to the point for the fast action in order to avoid losing our ideas :) best way to easily and rapidly put an idea of song on a media that you can work with later on. It’s important to remember to record tracks on a click because SD3 will play in sync with the host. Good job again ! Cheers !
Good video, Ryan I agree, using the loops to set up a bed for the song is really useful. I do, also, use the midi field to write and edit kicks, cymbals, etc. to better lock into the guitars, as well as vocals. I think the only thing you left out were fills. But, fills are subjective, so again, great video!
I love Tap2Find as a feature. Although lately I've found it faster to just tap in a simple rhythm with a MIDI controller for this type of workshopping. I do have to say that the SD3 sample library sounds pretty damned good. I've hovered my mouse over the "add to cart" on SD3 for a while now...this might put me over the edge.
Dude!! I have this set up at home and I have yet to figure it all out😩 I like how your breaking things down for the tap in method for timing for beats. Love it. Keep putting stuff up for home studio recording. It’s the way to go now!!
I have be doing this exact same for years with addictive drummer. I always wished I knew an easier way, I guess there isn't. Sometimes I would just line up a whole bunch of bars and write the riff to that.
What I like doing is putting each drum component into separate tracks and then use a pad controller to sketch out drum patterns. It makes it easier for me to precisely get down the beat in my head instead of hoping I find a good one or doing it note by note on the piano roll.
load the instrument as multi-out instead of stereo, send each drum to a different out within Superior and then.. i only know how to do it in Logic but on the SD mixer channel press the little + at the bottom until you get them all
I've been wondering if this program was worth purchasing for a little while now, but I'm sold on it now. That makes laying drums soooooo much easier than manually programming into the DAW.
This video was a great representation of how a workflow can improve your songwriting. All you needed to complete the rhythm section was EZ Bass. Too bad it wasn't available at the time you shot this.
Doesn't it make more sense to leave the midi IN the instance of SD3 so that you can have the song structure to play with in case of changes? Once you drag into the track timeline and remove it from SD3, you likely run into issues for future manipulation?
I've been debating whether to upgrade my virtual drum set up to this and I think you sold me on it. This looks pretty simple and intuitive given its hefty libraries and features.
so you dont normally audition the loop while guitar riff plays Fluff? ...did you know you dont have to drag each loop into S1 to see if it works, because SD3 and S1 loops will sync up auto? ...just loop guitar part and hit play in both S1 and SD3 same time, much quicker workflow that way
All you had to do was choose 1/2 time on the tempo setting in SD3. That's the reason why the drum pattern was so busy and you had to reduce the number of cymbal hits. Your tune here is definitely a 1/2 tempo tune.
Can you write your own beats from scratch, not having to use the pre-recorded loops? Can you write a death metal song with crazy drumming if you wanted?
Can you add or take away notes in the grid editor? Like if you find a close groove but you need some switched around a bit and a few extras added, can you do that?
Excellent video and simple explanation using the superior program drummer 3. What kind of additional software do I need to install it on my computer the program.

Nice demonstration. I am considering getting this program and you have answered a number of my questions. Thank you. JD
No more Logic, bold move!! Studio One looks pretty great though, I should check it out.
I was looking to move from Garage Band to Logic. Is Logic no good?
@@V8LC100 Logic is great, I used garageband for 5 or 6 years before switching to Logic, and Logic is perfect for me.

i depends on the ezx and setting but i think the man is a metal player: hard to find a natural sound-raw in metal
Them doorknobs sure like a good twist
glad i found this! Thanks!!
