As a guitarist I LOLed. Love your videos Justin! You’ve helped me settle on a Roland TD17KVX for my studio and I’m super grateful for that. The technology has come so far from my last Yamaha kit from 2010. Thank you for all you do!
Justin, I'm not a drummer but I own an Alesis Strike kit for my live band. Your videos are complete, well organized, and live in the real world. Many thanks.
I just purchased an alesis strike pro SE and one of the decision points was so that I didn't have to buy EZD or SD for a while (possibly ever) because it has such decent built-in sounds. I see EZD probably being phased out as standard modules start to match EZDs capabilities. Fortunately for toontrack they can just up the price for SD to make up for lost EZD sales as this transition takes place, since it will always be the penultimate tool and modules will never be able to come close.
I really appreciated this tutorial and learned a lot. I've been using EZ and Superior 3 Drums since they first came out and have been into electronic drums from the beginning. You helped me with the latency problem that I've always had. My computers were very fast and had gobs of RAM so I thought that this lag was the nature of the beast. When I first started using EZ Drums, I got such a bad latency that I worked around it by monitoring the outs of my VDrum module that was triggered by Pintech pads and cymbals. I recently I've replaced the VDrum module and most of the pads and cymbals with Alesis Strike Pro gear. When tracking my performance, I would listen via the VDrum out, while recording the EZ sounds. I did a test by recording the VDrum audio along side the EZ Drums and did find a slight latency, with the audio lagging behind the MIDI but not enough to affect my playing. The MIDI signal is always in sync. Now, I only use Superior 3, also BFD, High School Drum Corp, Studio Drummer and other percussion libraries. My DAW is Nuendo 12, running Win 10-64 on a 8-Core XEON with 128 Gb's of RAM and all SSD's. FYI, in Superior 3 the latency control looks different from in your example in EZ, at least on my PC. My buffer choice is not configured in the program but in the audio control panel for my I/O device, a MOTU 2408 PCI, which had been set at 512. I lowered it to 32 , giving me an output latency of 1.1ms and a buffer latency of .7ms. I'll move it down to 16 if there are no glitches. Another thing that you hipped me to was choosing the hardware input. Once I set it to Alesis Strike Pro, the response was perfect with negligible latency. Also, I was able to better tweak the HI Hat open/close and cymbal zone responses. Just when you think you know it all, there's more to learn! I thank you so much.
Really really nice to have a full explanation of every step to get everything working, and we can see exactly where to click to get to the same menu Keep doing those videos, they really are the best in the electronic drums field
Using EZd3 for out and about laptop easyness. At home the TD-27/506 and SD3 do the heavy lifting for jamming and recording with my son ( who is a bass player) he has chosen to study music in further education...how proud can a Dad get? Every father and son should Jam, it's an awesome way to connect. Love your channel Justin, I see you growing HUGE in the coming years, the hard work will pay off, stick at it! things are going to get VERY exciting for e-drummers soon, mark my words!
Longtime e-drummer (Roland) + subscriber (65 Drums) but new EZD3 user - just what I was looking for to unlock its full potential w/ my V-Drums! Thanks for putting together your review 🙌
@@vincentvalentine9417 I have a TD-27 and highly recommend it. The built-in kits sound great and it supports USB digital snare + ride + hats. Works well with EZD3 to boot.
Awesome review, Justin. Nothing left out here and I do agree on your verdict. They significantly upgraded the whole software while still left enough distance between EZD3 and Superior Drummer 3. I also think that for the majority of e-drummers EZD3 will do the job.
@@65Drums the only thing that I don’t like about the band mate feature is that it’s limited to one track. I wish you could put in a couple of more tracks for the AI to pick up a little better.
@65Drums I’m running a Roland td27 with the the Vad kit . I’m really considering running EZ drummer 3 live through my newer Mac. Would I need a audio interface to line out ,to go to the mixing board or can I go back through the module and go left and right output to the mixer ? Also is running a lap top live not a great idea ? Any help 🙏🏻 not really happy with the Td27 sounds .
Roland TD-20 module, a desktop PC (Core i5-4570 - quite old, 8GB RAM, SSD), Behringer UMC 404HD audio interface; I use latency 128 at 48KHZ. Software Superior Drummer 3 (currently), few years ago EZdrummer 2. I use this configuration live at my church in Romania and it works flawlessly. No built-in sounds can match the quality of these libraries. P.S. Few years ago I used Roland TD-4 module which had issues with latency. With the same audio settings in software and interface all latency issues went away by simply switching to Roland TD-20 module.
Hi brother, God bless you. I have a Alesis Nitro Kit, CakeWalk as DAW, EZD3. I want to play at muy Church but I dont have audio interface. For my budget, I just can buy a cheap audio interface like M-audio Duo. What do you think about it? Do you think I could play without problems.? I have a Asus Laptop Core i3 5010U,. 2.10Ghz. 8Gb Ram, SSD 256GB. Cakewalk anda EZD3 run without latency when I play ir record at home
Justin, man I am such a fan of your work. I was looking for an Alesis kit, but all the similar models were confusing. You helped me save money by picking the right kit. Now I'm having the same issue with Toontrack and these packages. You have great content, your preso skills are as strong as anybody I've ever seen in the corporate world. I truly appreciate the work you do, it's impressive.
I loved EZD2 and am loving the EZD3 upgrade a lot. I find this is all you need. I’ve spent a ton of money on expansion packs and most suck overall except for a few kicks or cymbals. I don’t do nearly anyyy of what you discussed but will be fiddling around with some of those functions today!!
I didn't realize that I could get the latency low enough on my TD25 ASIO driver to use EZD3 as a sound module. I'm figuring out how to use this with my DAW as well. Thanks for the fantastic video.
Damn bro I just watched your old video about Ezdrummer2 4years ago and wondering when will you release a new video and there we go. Big appreciate from your Taiwanese viewer
I am using a TD17KVX kit with a MSI GS65 gaming laptop. It works perfectly, zero latency, I just leave my drums plugged into it and turn on spotify or youtube to play along with whatever I want while its running. I put it on the ASIO setting and everything just works exactly how its supposed to work.
Thanks for the vid. Im about to spring for a TD17-KVX and was looking to run Addictive Drums. up to this point ive only used it for programming beats to my guitars and bass. im a control freak :)
Good choice on the TD17-KVX, as the rubber pads on the cheaper models will give you tendonitis's. I have AD2 and it has great sounds and pretty good hi-hat controls, they have good technical support as well.
@@Derfen81 thanks much but I went with the td 17. im more of a rock and punk drummer and not much need for the precision of positional sensing. the 27 is for sure a nice nice kit but after all these years of buying gear im FINALLY learning not to go more than I need. gear is great but so is a savings account ha ha!!
Running a Roland td17kvx into a MSI gaming laptop... Core i7 pc with 32 gig of ram with an internal and external SSD. I feed the Roland into a focusrite scarlett 18i20. Standalone app i can get it to 16 samples with no crackles or distortion. Runs smooth as butter in Reaper as well. I am extremely happy with this set up.
Great video Justin!…This is perfect video, I have been re-searching this online for awhile, trying to figure out which drum sample software to buy for my money and for my TD-30. You’ve made up my mind EZdrummer 3 is it. I have a small studio I built, Interface PreSonus Studio1824c and for drums Behringer Interface.. Seriously appreciate all your hard working you put into making these videos, plus your honesty about the product and keeping us drummer’s informed. Keep up the excellent work. Thank you again 🥁✌🏻
Thank you Justin for this super helpful video! I have EZ2 and was wondering about the custom midi mapping capabilities since EZ2 basically has none. Toontrack had originally said if you wanted custom midi mapping and velocity control, you would have to buy Superior Drummer and it would not be available in an EZ product. I'm super happy they changed their minds (probably due to enough negative feedback from people like me lol). I will definitely be upgrading to EZ3 in the coming months, thanks Toontrack!
I still use the first ez drummer, with expansions of course, and it does a great job for what it is. I use it with my old Alesis e-drums, but because of the latency of my setup, i only use it for studio purposes. The built in sounds of the e-drums are okay for writing, and practicing anyway, the sounds should pop on the recording, and they do (if my mixing and mastering is on the spot of course)
EZD3 works straight out of the box for the mimic, td-50 & td-30 with the presets included, however updating SD3 to 3.3.0 the hi-hats just for the mimic are all over the place!! gonna go back to 3.2.8
Hi Justin! This is a neccessary review. Many guys just reviewing from the DAW drum sampler song writing point of view. If I had the EZD3 available 3 years ago, I thing I wouldn't have purchased SD3 one year ago, I guess. Now you get an awesome remapping tool. Velocity remapping curves ... Nice! AND - did you mention that: You now can "tune" the drums. It's no longer just pitch. I think they throw their retuning algorithm into the package. I mean I really love the velocity remapping of the PER ARTICULATION in SD3 and the mixer (adjusting surgical like bleeding things), adding more kit parts. Some more articulations like hihat, cymbal bell, bow etc. And of course the stunning SDX' . The snare positional sensing feature... I mean I got it a crossgrade for 270€/300$. And I thing, it was worth it. Latency, audio buffer settings: about 3ms output latency at 64 samples buffer setting, 44.1kHz, 24bit. I got here a PC that I build in 2013 (Win10). Really. I mean, I put in 16 GB RAM, INTEL i7, and this days with several SSD for SD3 samples and other VSTs, and 2 years ago a nvidia GTX 960 graphics card for the 3 4K displays. USB interface is a jurassic M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8x8 (Released in 2007 ?). I grabbed it used in 2011 and it's still totally fine. I testet a new MOTU M4 but in terms of latency in my config it actually performs worse that the M-Audio. So I didn't replaced it. The problem will be the drivers some time .. but, we will see. So, that's fine for playing the edrums alone or playing along to songs. I get some crackles when using several VST instruments, so I have to bounce out the other VST tracks or need to rise the buffer size to 256 samples but... that seems to be fine. Thank you, for your content. Greetings from Germany! This is my setup tinyurl.com/my-edrum-setup
I just picked up EZDrummer3 for my TD-30, and some first impressions I have. 1. The sounds are WAY WAY better. Even compared to VExpressions, the VSTs blow the module sounds out of the water. You will never ever go back. 2. The module is lousy as an audio interface, don't plan on using it. Yes, it works but even with a modern PC Windows 10 desktop (well in excess of the minimum specs) there's either horrible latency if the buffer size is too large or crackling/dropouts if you try to get it down. I switched to an Audio Interface (a Focusrite Scarlett) and the problems instantly went away. Don't waste your time with the module. 3. The user interface of EZDrummer leaves a lot to be desired. It's hard to figure out the relationship between Libraries, instruments, drum slots, mixer presets, user presets, etc, etc. I feel like this could have been thought through better and I'm going to need a lot of work to get up to speed. But those *sounds* though, my goodness. You'll be willing to put up with a lot to get that sound.
I’m tempted to buy this now thanks to this video Justin. I run Ezdrummer 2 as a stand alone (no daw) with audio through my td17 and I love it except for the high hat which really does bug so I was: A: glad to hear you had the same opinion and I wasn’t alone. And B: glad to hear that ez3 has fixed this issue.
I would encourage you to jump-in the pool. Seriously, I am quite surprised and indeed pleased with EZ3- and I expect the price will only increase as the software gains positive reviews and acceptance. I would say this will have value in the $300-$400 US range. The ability to simply import a mp3 track and get recognition for midi is cherry on the cake. Yup, they did a pretty good job IMHO. (absolutely no affiliation)
Good to see another video! I have EZD and AD ver 2 on both...I think. No need for me to upgrade. Thank you for the info though. Best Regards and Best Wishes!
For those who have alesis strike pro with a PC, an audio interface is strongly recommended. I tried without one and latency was horrendous. Install ezdrummer and your audio interface software first!! Attach a 5-pin midi plug (round) to line OUT on the module. Plug the other 5-pin end into the line IN on your audio interface. I used focus rite 4i4 3rd generation. Plug the USB plug from the audio interface to the USB A on your computer. Now, to get the sound out of the computer. you have to use the focus rite software to let the computer know where to direct the sound out. There's an output scroll down menu showing the volume controls. The scroll down menu is under the volume controls. There is headphones, stereo speakers and mixer. Since I wanted my sound to go into a mixer, I mistakenly chose stereo speakers because I plugged 2 trs cables from the focus rite output into my mixer and there was no sound! Why? Because I specifically had to choose the "mixer" setting. 🙄 I use a mixer because I plug headphones into it to monitor the sounds coming out and it has a built-inrecorder. do not plug any other plug to the strike pro module except for the 5-pin midi line out because you will get the strike pro sounds as well. You can also get sound out of your audio interface headphone jack if you wish. All settings in the strike pro module are disabled. You have to go to ezdrummer to change settings. Unlike Roland, alesis modules don't have a built-in audio interface. 🙄 not only do I get clear sound out of the mixer but there is ZERO latency! The sounds are incredible compared to the strike pro especially the double bass! Good luck everyone! Too bad all modules couldn't sound this great!
I have owned the Roland TD27KV for over a year I play it every day hard and heavy death metal for atleast an hour or 2 each day and I gotta say the onboard sounds are amazing... the amount of customization is unbelievable 😳 mic placement and rooms and everything just works so good. I am hesitant to get an upgrade cause I love the kits I've created
@@JesusLordOfLords455 you probably own Alesis LOL 😆 I play my Roland daily and it sounds amazing. Don't hate me because you're too stupid to figure out how to use the module to its capabilities.
I've had a lot of different edrums over the years, and I must say Roland toms suck - badly. Even a set of toms on a Medeli DD508DX that I had once sounded better. Roland's toms are getting worse with every new kit, they sound too digital and vague. I had a TD - 3 many years ago and there too, there was a set of toms that just sounded REAL, and was muffled just enough - and that's an antique, entry level kit! The latest update to the TD27 is not much better. Roland need to go back to the basics. @@JesusLordOfLords455
Great video! I own both EZD2 & EZD2, and yes EZD3 is much better for Edrums as Justin points out the reasons, and many of the EZD3 sounds are really good. I have an Alesis Surge Mesh E-Drum Kit and the preset that is offered for the Surge under "Alesis" in the E-Drums section doesn't map everything right. But... if you select Medeli - DD512 everything is mapped correctly ( The Medeli DD512 Drum Module from what I've read ans seen is the same Module as the Alesis "Surge" and "Nitro" Modules) Give it a try, it worked great, and with the new Hi-Hat adjustments you can get the Hi-Hat sounds to trigger better - Open, Half Open, Closed, Foot, and Splash all work much better with the hat adjustments in EZD3.
Hey, just curious about two things. On EZD2 you can't play the bow of a cymbal, except for the hi-hat and ride of course. And there is no possibility to play tom rims. Is that possible with the EZD3?
That is really great to know, I actually have a medeli kit, and with ezdrummer 2 I can't splash the hat with my foot. Can I ask, could I program one of the rims to be a cowbell? Because I haven't been able to do that with ez 2 either? Many thanks
@@Wollestar Yes in EZD3 you can play bow on the crash cymbals, but you must have a 2 zone cymbal and your module must support it, and yes you can assign stuff to the tom rims if your toms have 2 zones and your module supports it.
@@dominiccalzetti Yes you can, he explains how to do that at: 11:50 EZD3 allows you to map drums in the program, EZD2 did not, the work around was to change the midi note number in the module and save that as a user preset in the module (Medeli, Alesis Surge, Nitro etc...)
I'm using Krimh Drums right now. I discovered EZ Bass AND Keys a week ago and was on the fence on the EZ drummer and or superior drummer Krimh compares more to superior drums than ez drums... I think I'll stick with Krimh for now. I don't see a huge advantage and the cost was a quarter of the price of superior drums are! Krimh drums have the mixer and the humanize options you can turn on or off... The drum and cymbals samples are AWSOME as well... Think I'll stay home... Just made up my mind... They also have the Midi drum feature if you have digital drums that has tons of control.
Hi Justin. I'm running a Dell System Latitude 7390 2-in-1 laptop. It has an i7-8650 quad core cpu with 16GB ram and a 512GB SSD drive. I'm using an Audient iD14 interface with BFD3 and Steven Slate Drums using a 64 sample buffer. My drum setup is a Yamaha DTX Multi12 with the kick tower. I'm about to buy a Gretsch Mighty Mini 10" snare and convert it to electronic. I like the uber-compact size. I hope to add a few more Gibraltar clamps and get everything mounted to a single cymbal stand.
Thanks for this video, man! 🙂 I watch your channel pretty regularly. Own a Roland TD25K set that I've used for years now, and have gotten a lot of mileage from. Within the past 6 months, _"upgraded"_ (IMO) the older TD25 module to the TD17. Not that the preset sounds on either of those are bad, they're not, but... I think it's time to explore other options. Seems like this will be the ticket, for me. _-Cheers!_ 🍻
I must say that the TD17 is considered quite the downgrade. The TD17 is the successor to the TD11/15 modules, whereas the TD25 is the predecessor to the TD27. You're giving up positional sensing and you aren't gaining anything with the TD17 as far as i know? No more expansion ports, same crappy roland sounds. If you're going to use a plugin why on earth would you go from a 25 to a 17???
@@fVNzO The 17 _technically_ has better on-board sounds, as its library is based on the TD-50 engine. _(Whereas the 25 pulls from the older TD-30 line.)_ Plus, the 17 has a bit more features in terms of customization. _(Strainer adjustment, mic placement, room size, ect.)_ Little things like that, which... IMO make it better, overall.
@@davidjlosi Well, all of those are fairly unimportant to me personally. Especially because the TD17 is quite the downgrade compared to the TD50. And with the TD50 already being in the bottom half of sound quality in the industry, i feel like giving up positional sensing was a bad move. That's really nice for superior drummer.
Just being able to resize the window is a huge bonus for me. During the preorder period they had the upgrade for 80 bucks, and considering there's new sounds with it and their sound packs usually run 80 bucks anyway it seemed like a no brainer.
I only use VST's as my sound source as iusetwo audiofro t edrumin devices - a 10 and a 4. I only ever sprung for ezd2. I always meant to upgrade to sd3 but its so expensive and I only really wanted it for the better experience in being ab,e to change apps g etc as I don't like changing it on the edrumin. I saw this got released but assumed it would be the samewith new sounds. I'm really happy you made this video as I would probably,y go for this over sd3 now. I like the out the box sounds I just hated the old mapping settings (or lack of!) I US two computers both macs. One mac mini 2019 I think 32gb ram and an Intel i3 I think and then I have an old 2015 mac book pro with16gb ram and an i5 I think. I always use ezd2 inside logic x and with the same settings always just use the lowest buffer there is. Sometimes the one up. Really stoked you made this video about ezd3 from an actual edrummers perspective!
edit about 2 hours later: I decided to throw in the towl and upgrade from 2 to3. Thanks for thatcoz they were harrassing me with emails all through the release and I never would have bought it if I didnt see your video!
Using EZDrummer 2 within Superior Drummer 3 gets around many of the built-in problems of EZDrummer 2. 😁 That said, I still mostly use the Superior Drummer 3 sounds, every now and then some old Superior Drummer 2 expansions (such as Metal Machinery).
I use Superior Drummer 3 on a pretty old windows laptop (came with windows 7, upgraded to 10 and maxed out the RAM at 8GB). 64 samples is the lowest I can go without any crackling and at 64 I get pretty much no latency. This is using ASIO4ALL of course. It works well, all things considered. My module is a TD-9 so drum software is basically a requirement at this point, those built in sounds are rough.
hi, I'm also with a TD9, what midi interface are you using? I got a cheap one, but everytime I connect it, it doesn't register all the hits or trigger randomly some notes.... thanks!
@@RaphaRox I use a pretty cheap one too. The brand is iConnectivity. There's no box, it's just a straight MIDI to USB cable. I've had it for years and never had any triggering issues with it. Assuming yours is different, I'm not sure what could be causing the problem.
You're short changing yourself by not having a sufficient sound card. Buy a £50 Haswell i5 pc and an RME pci soundcard for £120 to get less latency than you would get on £4000 pc and usb soundcard.
Great vid Justin. Silly question. If you use ED3 through say a TD50, can you still record internally through the TD50 head using the ED3 samples? IE I am playing a song as base internally through TD50 that I want to add drums over that have the sounds generated by the ED3.
I recently started using the Luke Holland drum library with my DTX 522K on my windows PC. Buffer size is usually at 512 on my Focusrite 2i4. My Daw of choice Is Ableton
Built me a A2E kit using a TD50 in 2020 and populated all the inputs. x2 digital rides and snare. Even made a custom 14" HH from a VH10...the VH14 was announced shortly after but I already fell in love with my HH and HATE 2 Pc eHHs anyway... A beast of a eDrum set but the star of the show is SD3. Never going back to drum module sounds. I have an old Macbook pro w/16GB of RAM and it's all you'll need for SD3 or EZdrummer. Don't even bother with Windows, it's garbage for latency.
@@krokk4life Yep, I trigger SD3 with it. I also have a TD27 in case I want more than 3 digital pads or expand the number of instruments. As you can plug more than one drum module into your macbook pro and SD3 will see the extra instruments, not like daisy chaining. But pretty much any drum module will do the exact same, I guess.
all around, very well made video. only comment i have is that the volume of the talking portions is much higher than the volume of the drumming examples. i kept having to turn the volume up while you were playing, then back down when you started talking. it's not a small difference in volume either - this video would be perfect if the volumes were closer together.
Another great video, thanks Justin. As a TD30 player I'm definitely going to buy v3 but would welcome a steer regarding spec for the purchase of a dedicated Windows laptop solely for use with my edrums. Thanks
One thing I've found with modern windows pc sound systems is that if they are realtech audio, the system always has a delay when outputting sound. It's usually about 50 ms or so and can't be changed. Apple have done sound correctly for years and the audio lag issues in windows machines didn't exist about 15 years ago or so. Another byproduct of this porr audio handling is that the device switching between a set of built in laptop speakers and the headphones is all handled by the digital side of things, so even though the headphone port is analog the pc digitally switches devices and knows if you plugged in or removed a cable. This is characterised by the fact that if the true analog nature of the connection was used, there would be no lag and you could half way insert the plug and it would switch immediately. Instead, software now waits for you to completely plug in the cable and internally switches devices, which could mean a short drop out of sound could happen. Also aplications that don't have proper handling of devices being connected or disconnected when running could stop sending sound to a valid device if by chance the headphone plug disconnects, resulting in a required restart of the app in question to get sound back.
EZD3 looks interesting but if it's close to $200, I'd probably just pony up another $200. What I really need to study up on is the laptop to run this kind of thing on. As I plan to get the Efnote 3x, I'm guessing I'm going to have to teach the programme to know what is what. I'm not sure how much of a audio card you can get in a laptop given the size of them so perhaps I need to look at an external one. Do you prefer using win or mac? I've always loved mac's but have never bought into their ecosystem as I can get so much more bang for the buck than anything mac. I need to look through your vids to see if you done a in depth dummies guide to running drum soft on a laptop and learning the programme. On a side note. At 7.46 on the timeline, the first kit you played had me waiting for a hand clap and Falco popping up singing Der Kommissar.
Best of luck in your research. I personally use a 2012 MacBook Pro With my electronic drums. I think it’s just easier operating system, less hassle and low latency. If I was buying something brand-new, it would probably be the thousand dollar MacBooks with the M1 chip inside. I hear they’re great for use with plug-ins. I really like the EFNOTE kit too.
I have been playing live with my Roland TD11 kit and EZdrummer 2 for several years. I use a 7 year old MacBook air. I connect the usb out of the Roland into usb on Mac and then connect a focusrite $200 digital interface and run stereo out of it into the PA system. Very easy to set up and get running. I upgraded to EZ3 and the new samples sound so much better live than the older sounds from Ez2. Go for it.
@@65Drums As you, I like the Efnote. I just don't like being limited to whats in the box. I really like the idea of being able t pick out specific drums and using them. I'd pay another 200 on top of the price of SD3 if they had the "Copeland kit" or the "Neil Peart Tama years"
@@66meikou the EZ drummer3. Will run on pretty anyMac from the last 5 -6 years or so. It doesn’t need a lot of computer horsepower or memory. Also it runs fine on the latest Mac OS see if you can find a used MacBook Air don’t need a new high end Pro.
Hi Justine, I have M1 Macbook Air (16Gb Ram, 512 HD) and Roland TD 17KV. I am currently using EZDrummer 3 using the setting to the very lowest 16 samples (0.6 ms) and it works fine without any audio interface. However, I do have Scarlett Solo 3rd Generation. But I guess Roland TD 17KV users don't need any interface to use EZDrummer 3 for play-along recordings.
Hi Sr. Thank you for taking Time for explaining all this. I use EZdrummer 3 and Cakewalk as DAW in Win10. My e-drum is a Alesis nitro. Everything ok until Now, but I want to play in live at Church. Now, I have to buy a sound interface, I am looking to M-audio Duo for plugging in on a Console. Do you think that everything Is gonna be alright? The latency, drivers of sound interface, etc ? Thank you!
My cheap ass setup is a Session Pro DD505, a Roland midi to usb cable and an old Acer Inspire i5 (from 2010) laptop running EZDrummer 2! Works surprisingly well using the ASIO4ALL drivers 😁
Great video, can you use two drum modules simoutaniously with EZdrummer 3 for example if you have a frankestein kit, and also is the mapping working if that setup is used.
Soundwise, EZD3 or AD2? Is there much difference? Does EZD3 sound more realistic, less compressed etc (tweakability aside)? Right now, AD2 is on sale, with 3 ADPaks, for almost $70 less than EZD3. But I guess I do get the crossgrade option to SD3 with EZD3 if I get the itch later.
I have AD2 and I don't like how cymbals sound, so I tried getgood drums and I'm a lot happier, but now considering EZD3 too, not sure if it is better that GGD
Greetings from Missouri! I use a millennium 850 as my e drums. An 2015 iMac 27” i5 with 16g of ram. And for software I’m using 3 different GGD libraries in the Omni configuration and I use different drums and cymbals from each library to get a custom sound. Routing is crucial when combining libraries, but I’m very curious about maybe trying out Ez drummer 3….
Hey Justin awesome vid I might have to end up buying this one! I use addictive drums 2 my DAW is waveform 11. I have a MSI Delta 15 laptop I use both ASIO and my Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen as my audio devices. Because of that I am not sure what is my audio buffer size since its set at 256 samples 5.8ms yet there is no latency at all probably thanks to asio.
Im kind of torn on choices. Im in the midst of buying my first E-Drum kit (Roland TD17KV Gen2), but i've been playing acoustic drums for the last 12 years. I don't want to lose quality of sound, not sure if I should invest in a program such as EZdrummer3 or just a imported sound kit like Drum-tec Rock Classics Sound Edition... Ugh. This is just strictly for practicing in my garage, not producing/recording.
Hey Justin! Is there any chance you can make a video one day in which you explain how to make the choke function of cymbals make work with EZ Drummer! This would be much appreciated! Thanks a lot for your videos they are so helpfull! Regards from Germany!
Good video, I’ll try EZ Drummer 3 on my set. I used asio4all for years, but the last few times I tried to use it everything went to crap. Had the right versions, checked everything, so I don’t use it.
Hey Justin. Just upgraded from EZ2 to EZ3. Getting ready to add an eDrum kit (Alesis Strike Pro SE?) and I'm in a carpeted room. If I were to buy a 4x8 sheet of plywood to set the kit up on (with a rug on top of course), will 4x8 be room enough for that kit, or should I look at 2 4x8 sheets? Also, how thick should the plywood be? Great video too BTW. Love your stuff.
Thank you, Justin. You videos are awesome and really helpful. I just got Alesis Surge and Easy Drummer 3. It's super cool stuff to play and practice. I tried to use it with my students during online lessons, but it didn't work .... Did you have some issues like this? Is it possible to use this software with teaching ? Thank you .
Hello Justin and congratulations for all your good advice and your superb videos... Do I have a question to ask you? How do you get your module to give you the sound from the headphones and also the left and right outputs at the back of the module? I use a Roland TD-50x and I connect USB to my computer and it works well but I have no control over my TD-50X. I imagine that we need to make small changes in the programming module and in the video, this is how you proceed, I think for you personally. Thank you, still waiting for a suggestion. PIerre
What cymbal pads are those? I see what appears to be a blue LED under the crash on your left and a glow under the right crash. I have a double kick Roland TD-6V with some CY-12's that aren't firing very well right now that I have on my kit at church! My pads are vintage PD-21's I've had since 1987, and I've recently purchased some Alesis Nitro Mesh pads since I'm on a budget (so I can lower my stage volume some since getting complaints from some people that everything is too loud) on eBay and I still have to custom modify the narrower L-bar holders to fit my larger diameter Roland (actually Ultimate Support) aluminum bars. If I can't get them repaired, I'm considering new cymbals and am thinking about putting triggers on some Evans dB Ones since I'm hearing good things about them! Love your reviews always!
I appreciate the fast preset changes with same drum fill at the beginning of the video. Makes it easy for my little brain to compare tonalities.
+1
@@homomorphic I think the target group are not strike pro owners 😉
This is legitimately THE BEST overview of ED3 and how to use it. You're the man!
Really really nice to have a full explanation of every step to get everything working, and we can see exactly where to click to get to the same menu
Keep doing those videos, they really are the best in the electronic drums field
Using EZd3 for out and about laptop easyness. At home the TD-27/506 and SD3 do the heavy lifting for jamming and recording with my son ( who is a bass player) he has chosen to study music in further education...how proud can a Dad get?
Every father and son should Jam, it's an awesome way to connect. Love your channel Justin, I see you growing HUGE in the coming years, the hard work will pay off, stick at it! things are going to get VERY exciting for e-drummers soon, mark my words!

I'm thinking about buying a roland td27 and want to use one of the vst's. How do you like the combo?
@@vincentvalentine9417 I have a TD-27 and highly recommend it. The built-in kits sound great and it supports USB digital snare + ride + hats. Works well with EZD3 to boot.
Awesome review, Justin. Nothing left out here and I do agree on your verdict. They significantly upgraded the whole software while still left enough distance between EZD3 and Superior Drummer 3. I also think that for the majority of e-drummers EZD3 will do the job.
I got it last week and the bright room kit and presets are definitely good.
I agree, there's no need to spend an hour tweaking the sounds because It kinda sounds great out of the box

Dude thank you for explaining the velocity and high hat settings! Ive been looking everywhere for that info. You rock

Finally just upgraded from EZD2 and more than stoked with how awesome it is!
This is one of the best reviews on EZD3 I’ve seen. Thanks for sharing!
thanks dude!
I didn't realize that I could get the latency low enough on my TD25 ASIO driver to use EZD3 as a sound module. I'm figuring out how to use this with my DAW as well. Thanks for the fantastic video.
me too with my td 17! a good cpu apparently helps most with latency though i can play on sd3 with not much noticeable latency on an okay cpu
Man, I've been trying to get superior drummer to work well with my TD50 for like 3 months. Thank god I watched this. Might be time for another try
One of the best videos on this subject I've seen to date.
This review is the best I've seen. The tips for setup are easy to follow and make sense. Thanks Justin for this top shelf video!
Dude, you're such a savior!
I’d personally suggest td27 if u can. The digital inputs make it so u can have a extra snare ride and hi hat. Perfect for future expansion
im the same as u with the same kit
Dude that's great! I really think the interface is the key to low latency on Windows
Glad you're back, brother!
Justin, awesome video! Really happy to see you getting better and better with videos/production over all the years. Rock on! 😎👍🏼
Hit me up if you are looking for EZD and all expansion packs with 50% discount!
Awesome video thanks Justin!
👍
This was the review I was waiting for. Thanks Justin.
EZD3 works straight out of the box for the mimic, td-50 & td-30 with the presets included,
however updating SD3 to 3.3.0 the hi-hats just for the mimic are all over the place!! gonna go back to 3.2.8
Nice!
AND - did you mention that:
You now can "tune" the drums.
Really. I mean, I put in 16 GB RAM, INTEL i7, and this days with several SSD for SD3 samples and other VSTs, and 2 years ago a
nvidia GTX 960 graphics card for the 3 4K displays.
USB interface is a jurassic M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8x8 (Released in 2007 ?). I grabbed it used in 2011 and it's still totally fine. I testet a new MOTU M4 but in
terms of latency in my config it actually performs worse that the M-Audio.
Thanks for the video brother 🤗🥁🎶
I run Ezdrummer 2 as a stand alone (no daw) with audio through my td17 and I love it except for the high hat which really does bug so I was:
A: glad to hear you had the same opinion and I wasn’t alone.
"let's face it" haha. I definitely have some good generalizations about drummers too and $180 is a bargain to stay away. Great video!
I just got the Gospel EZX and I'm super happy! Bet the ez3 would be great!
Really great video - thanks! I am using SD3 through a TD25 with a MacBook Pro, but started out with EZ2. Looks like a nice upgrade.
Thank you very much for this video. Explained a lot. Looks like they've fixed most of the problems I've faced. Probably going to buy it soon :)
Well that settles it for me ezd3 it is, purchasing tomorow hopefully woks well with the simmons sd 1250 module ... thanks for the awesome video Justin
Ezdrummer 3 and sd3 definitely worth the money 💰
Awesome video, and exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Lol wait till you hear those synthetic Roland sounds next to actual drums....Roland sound like 💩
@@JesusLordOfLords455 you probably own Alesis LOL 😆 I play my Roland daily and it sounds amazing.
This is gold, Justin. Thank you!
Awesome video! The grid editor is a game changer for me
I got it for my edrums. Massive difference on the user end with connecting them together. I feel that sounds are the same, which isn't bad.
Your videos are really awesome - thanks for the info!
Great setup and getting started guide!
But... if you select Medeli - DD512 everything is mapped correctly ( The Medeli DD512 Drum Module from what I've read ans seen is the same Module as the Alesis "Surge" and "Nitro" Modules)
Give it a try, it worked great, and with the new Hi-Hat adjustments you can get the Hi-Hat sounds to trigger better - Open, Half Open, Closed, Foot, and Splash all work much better with the hat adjustments in EZD3.
@@ThomasECahill yeses!
EZ needs to pair up with Brand like Roland or Korg to get us some amazing sounding modules
Pearl Mimiq Pro has the SSD drums in it or something
That was awesome thank you so much for that! I’m getting ready to connect my VAD506 drums up to the newest MacBook Pro 16
Thanks man, this was really helpful to decide wether or not to use it with a roland TD-07
_(Whereas the 25 pulls from the older TD-30 line.)_
Plus, the 17 has a bit more features in terms of customization.
I personally suggest td27. It’s a bit more but u get digital inputs so it’s only module to give 2 hi hat. Snares and rides. Perfect for expanding
@@Derfen81 nope, the digital inputs disable analogs you don't get two of any of them.
Just being able to resize the window is a huge bonus for me. During the preorder period they had the upgrade for 80 bucks, and considering there's new sounds with it and their sound packs usually run 80 bucks anyway it seemed like a no brainer.
Hit me up if you are looking for expansion packs with 50% discount! I got them all
I only use VST's as my sound source as iusetwo audiofro t edrumin devices - a 10 and a 4.
Great channel Justin. Thanks
Great video. Can you do a video about routing the channels into your DAW for more processing control over each channel?
great review Justin
Buy a £50 Haswell i5 pc and an RME pci soundcard for £120 to get less latency than you would get on £4000 pc and usb soundcard.
great video mate. keep up the the good work
Great vid Justin.
Silly question. If you use ED3 through say a TD50, can you still record internally through the TD50 head using the ED3 samples? IE I am playing a song as base internally through TD50 that I want to add drums over that have the sounds generated by the ED3.
Thanks for the food for thought. I do hate the sounds that are in my TD-50X module!
Don't even bother with Windows, it's garbage for latency.
curious, so are you just using the TD50 as a glorified Midi device?
@@krokk4life Yep, I trigger SD3 with it. I also have a TD27 in case I want more than 3 digital pads or expand the number of instruments. As you can plug more than one drum module into your macbook pro and SD3 will see the extra instruments, not like daisy chaining. But pretty much any drum module will do the exact same, I guess.
Great review!! EZ3 looks great waiting for my Apple air to arrive!
all around, very well made video. only comment i have is that the volume of the talking portions is much higher than the volume of the drumming examples. i kept having to turn the volume up while you were playing, then back down when you started talking. it's not a small difference in volume either - this video would be perfect if the volumes were closer together.
I agree on us guitarist being control freaks! That is a great observation.
Great review, thank you.
Great video, cheers!
Go for it.
@@trbryan1951 Thanks for your reply mate. I'll look into a used mac lappy. Is there a particular spec that you have?
Great video. Thank you!
Thanks for this perfect video!
Thank you!
Great video, thanks! I'm able to go down to 32 samples (0,7 ms delay) on iMac 27" 5K, 2019 with Scarlett Solo
My cheap ass setup is a Session Pro DD505, a Roland midi to usb cable and an old Acer Inspire i5 (from 2010) laptop running EZDrummer 2! Works surprisingly well using the ASIO4ALL drivers 😁
I’m learning it’s the ppl that really use computers and set up triggers that way seem to get the most customization
@@Derfen81 Its the most flexible way really. Much better and more natural sounds than modules too.
Justin you're awesome❤
thank you Justin for your videos, great explanation! Do you consider EZD3 better than GGD?
Thank you .
Layering with AD, SD, BFD, and some 808 stuff is fun.
PIerre
Great video! I'm curious what electric kit you're playing in this video?
