After learning to play this song, you come to realize how much John McGeoch influenced Johnny Marr. That iconic intro riff in Spellbound sounds like a Gothic interpretation of a Smiths song.
@@Irishcarbomb82I found it strange at first but then just thought of it as a D7 shape barred shaped with non barred fingers one string above, not that hard
Not an easy song to play. Kind of sounds like a goth rock Johnny Marr. I've been searching for a good lesson on this and this has to be the best I've seen! Great explanations of the arpeggio patterns. And that's a beautiful Jazzmaster you've got!
You did great. Would really like to see some more post punk. I'd be interested to see some songs from The Chameleons, For Against, Cocteau Twins, Sad Lovers and Giants and some more from The Smiths and The Cure.
As a drummer I'm blown away on the skill this takes. What a great song this is! I appreciate guitar work like this, technically complicated, genius sound to it to form an incredible song!
Hi Adrian, not only a brilliant teacher but a man of great taste. That's 2 great mcgeoch tracks I'm learning from you. The other was shot by both sides. Keep it up, much appreciated.
I was going through live versions of Spellbound and you are better at playing this song than any guitarist I saw aside, of course, from Mr. McGeoch himself.
Very tricky. Thanks for your thorough approach - I've been fudging this one as I had no idea what he was doing. Having learned some Johnny Marr riffs/chords etc, I can certainly hear the influence of McGeoch. Love the chord voicings & arpeggiated stuff. Clever.
This guy is a born teacher and a superb player. The arpeggios are amazingly intricate, but the fast chorus strum with chord stepping carries almost the same energy, desperation and melancholy as the original, quite moving, hits me in the guts everytime, fantastic!
What a fantastic lesson. I've been playing for many years and this is the most challenging song to learn I think I have ever come across! Everyday picking seems so easy after playing this for about 3 weeks! You absolutely nail it. Thank you so much!
Your lessons are incredibly inspiring! Picking up the guitar with intent after decades of neglect and simultaneously finding your videos, especially your Siouxsie/McGeogh ones, has rekindled my hot romance with playing. Thank you so much!
I learned this back in 79 and pondered the 'bassline' bit. When I saw John playing with the Banshees a few times I noticed he always played the bassline c note etc on his guitar and it added a fuller dimension even with the bass playing along too. Great video btw
You're nailing it. Thank you for doing what you do. I'm a big S&TB fan and I was fortunate to get to see them live five times between 1982 and 1987. Solid!
Wow!!!! You really made my day with this one! The best Siousxie stuff was when John was in the band. Definitely one of my favorite guitarist. Huge influence on me. Thanks again!
Thanks for this. I ordered a 1982 tobacco smokburst SG1000 from Japan last month and I had 3 weeks to learn this before it arrived, as it had to be the first tune I played on it. Learned to play it on the worn out frets on my old guitar which was really hard work! A lot easier on my SG.
It's really cool how many different styles you showcase on your channel. It never crossed my mind to learn a Siouxsie and the Banshees song before, but I'm stoked to add to this my repertoire. Thanks for the great lesson, man!
Hey Adrian, the song is one of my alltime favourites and i love to play it, but i was not exact enough. It put a big smile on my face , when i saw that you put a lesson online. I really appriciate that you like this kind of music and that you give your time to teach us such a great song. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much for this! You´re a great teacher! My first tutorial with you was ¨Girl Afraid¨which has afforded me great pleasure. Currently trying to sing along as I play it, but success with this may be some months away. You and yours have a peaceful holiday season.
Adrian, when I watch your wonderful vids, it's almost as though you'd read my mind about what great British guitar tidbits I'd want to learn this week...thanks loads!
Fantastic teacher thanks my man ! just read McGeochs book I am lucky to own a 1984 Yamaha sg1000 and old enough to have seen Magazine at Huddersfield poly supported by Simple Minds in 1979/80
McGeoch was excellent. listen to his rhythm guitar on Definitive Gaze off the debut album Real Life by Magazine. Apparently, his best playing was for Public Image!? Anyway, this song and Israel are his best songs with the Banshees. If John Frusciante can say studying John McGeoch made him the guitarist he is, are YOU going to argue with him?
+anyonecanplayguitar.co.uk I sort of learnt it a while back by watching a guy and listening the track but yours is SPOT ON. Been learning it over today and loving it. Dam tricky like you say. See if you can do any of The Cure, like 10.15 Saturday Night that tune is awesome. Will be donating soon as I've a bit more cash in the bank thanks
+Rayza1983 Doing some Cure is a great idea - will have a think about that. Elsewhere on TH-cam there's great footage of Robert Smith playing this tune with the Banshees - a good effort but you can tell he's struggling to play it like McGeoch!
Thanks for the lesson! McGeoch was indeed an accomplished guitarist, in a genre (post punk/goth rock/new wave) in which alot of his peers were often great songwriters, but not exactly virtuosos on guitar
This is the musical equivalent of a tongue twister, love it, John McGeogh one of my all time favourites. Could you cover ghosts of princes in towers by the Rich Kids some time?
Great lesson...you played the whole thing right off...Those of us who can follow that (or slow it down) can get right to work. Others can wait for the note by note recitation. Thanks for doing this and posting. This is one of my post-punk favorites, still, in 2019. And you've really got that sound down, too. Nice Jazzmaster!!
Oh this is great. I've heard this song a few months ago and wanted to learn it since. I found it kind of hard to learn by ear because there's so much happening in the recording, and the tabs I found online were even further off. After watching your video I was able to get it down full speed within about an hour. Really happy because I think the song sounds really cool.
Fantastic lesson of an awesome track. Well done and many thanks. Great of you to put the time in to do this, I get so fed up trying to progress in my playing, you make it fun and worthwhile.
thanks for another great lesson from the legend John McGeoch. any chance you could do Halloween by SATB, Johns part seams impossible unless you have monster hands or seven fingers. cheers
Adrian - your lessons are just so awesome! Not only are they easy to follow, but your approach to tone is flawless! I would love to see you do a Cure song - maybe "Push"!
After learning to play this song, you come to realize how much John McGeoch influenced Johnny Marr. That iconic intro riff in Spellbound sounds like a Gothic interpretation of a Smiths song.
My thoughts exactly
Except this came before the smiths. Johnny Marr cites McGeoch as a major influence
+Martin Angliss yer this is 81 seen where Marr says McGeoch was an influence
+Rayza1983 the guitar bit in The Headmaster Ritual where Morrissey sings "I wanna go home, I don't want to stay" reminds me of this riff
@@henrykrinkles2208 Uh yeah, that's what he was saying. "you come to realize how much John McGeoch influenced Johnny Marr."
John McGeoch, total legend
Am 61 now if somehow i can learn to play this before i leave this world i will die a happy man 🙏🙏🙏
I’m 3 years behind you and totally agree, I’m getting there but it’s a tough one 👍
This is far too difficult for me but your lessons are so good and enjoyable that I find it a pleasure just to watch
My god what is with that Dm7 chord!? Extremely frustrating to play
I didn't find it too hard but maybe I was farther along in my guitar journey when I first discovered this then you guys were.
@@Irishcarbomb82I found it strange at first but then just thought of it as a D7 shape barred shaped with non barred fingers one string above, not that hard
In that position it would be a C7 with non barred fingers moved one string up
Keep on keeping on.
You will get there.
Utterly glorious. Those ringing open stringed arpeggios are magical. Easy to see McGeogh's influence on Johnny Marr.
John McGeoch was a genius. There is not not enough cover of his work. Thanks for this. Do more.
What a wonderful musician John McGeoch was. Wish he was still with us.
Not an easy song to play. Kind of sounds like a goth rock Johnny Marr. I've been searching for a good lesson on this and this has to be the best I've seen! Great explanations of the arpeggio patterns. And that's a beautiful Jazzmaster you've got!
So good you're teaching these cool songs, instead of the same old stuff the other teachers do.
1. One of my Siouxie's favorites
2. How beautiful is the Fender Jazzmaster guitar!
You did great. Would really like to see some more post punk. I'd be interested to see some songs from The Chameleons, For Against, Cocteau Twins, Sad Lovers and Giants and some more from The Smiths and The Cure.

I'm learning this song and it is like a kick in the balls. John, you're a fucking legend
Thats an accurate description. I can't stop my fingers from muting all the strings. At the end all I get is sore fingers.
I love the way you take the time to point out where the on and off beats are in even simple melody lines. It's helped me so much.
Hi Adrian, not only a brilliant teacher but a man of great taste. That's 2 great mcgeoch tracks I'm learning from you. The other was shot by both sides. Keep it up, much appreciated.
Your tone is so on point it's amazing. Excellent video.
Perfect - the playing, the sound, the T-shirt, the glasses, everything.
lol
I was going through live versions of Spellbound and you are better at playing this song than any guitarist I saw aside, of course, from Mr. McGeoch himself.
Exactly the words taken from my mouth, dude! Amazing!!!!
An absolutely superb tutorial. And McGeoch's brilliance still shines!
Great lesson and shows how innovative McGeoch was. Love Siouxsie!
Bloody excellent song, one of my favourites played BLOODY WELL.
Thank you ! Great work ⭐️ John McGeoch was such a Unique and Revolutionary Guitarist !
Plus his work in Magazine's "Real Life". Absolutely the best and mind blowing, Among The Church guitar players and a very selected few.
This is the best one I've learnt! Thanks so much from Warren. 😎

Siouxsie forever!
Great guitarists, both of you. Plus I love your nodding head when you get into a song. Thanks.
