Thanks for keeping it real. There are times when we are feeling “meh” about projects and life in general. Also thanks to all my Knit all the yarn peeps for showing Eunice some love! 💚
Yes to feeling "meh" about life sometimes - not just the projects! Thank you so much again for the shout out, Lisa... and for being here yourself!!! I'm so thankful for you!
I'm here because I watched Lisa's Knit All the Things podcast yesterday. I'm looking forward to watching all your podcasts through the rest of the week, so I can be current with Therapy by Craft going forward.
So glad I heard about you through Lisa - I love your projects and how you talk about them. Working through my making moods and motivations is so helpful to me, and I like hearing your process!
Hello sweet friend! We definitely all have those "meh" days. With some projects that just aren't bringing their half of the energy to the making, I just set them aside and come back to them later to see if they're still "meh" and frog or maybe I like them again. For socks, I knit them in tandem so that doesn't usually happen BUT if I'm like through the ribbed cuff only, they'll often just get ripped out. Or in the case of my Halloween ghost colorwork cuffs, I had only done one and called it a day after the chart and it was a cup cozy instead of a sock. Anyway, long story long, do whatever makes you feel good!! There's a toe-up sock pattern with a heel flap and gusset "upside-down" so that the slipped sts are intentionally on the bottom of the heel because that's where the designer says she's more likely to have holes than the back of her heel. I haven't knit the pattern yet but I think it's smart!! They're the Pop Socks for Wearing by Marceline Smith. Sending love~Stephanie
thanks for commiserating with me on the "meh"ness of crafting sometimes. hahaha i know I won't be in this space for long, so i appreciate the permission to do what feels right right now. thank you for the sock rec!! soo many people are informing me that heel flap and gussets are possible toe-up; I'm grateful for the education!
Hello Eunice. I found you as well through Lisa of Knit all the yarn/72 stitches. I've been watching her for years and really enjoy her socks and her on camera presence. I will continue to watch you too as an ode to knitting socks. Take care. Ken ,,,,,,,,,,Prayers for rain 😊
Love your podcast! Thanks for always being real and open about your knitting journeys. If you’re looking for a toe up heel, flap and gusset, Sarah Opie (s.knits) has a great pattern to follow. I believe it’s the Thursday Socks from her collection. Probably one of my favorites!
OMG the flashbacks to my teens when leg warmers became fashion 😂 Now I have to go watch Flashdance. The blanket is beautiful 🧡 All the socks are great!
I started a Trigradient Shawl yesterday using minis. Advent knitting is fun, weeee I feel 'meh' about almost every sweater I make for some reason or another. One of these days I'll knit one I really love.
Love your podcast! Thanks for always being real and open about your knitting journeys. If you’re looking for a toe up heel, flap and gusset Sarah Opie (s.knits) has a great pattern to follow. Probably one of my favorites!
Aw thank you so much! You know what.. I actually bought a BUNCH of Sarah's sock patterns way back when I first started knitting socks... I should probably rummage through them and see what I've got. Thanks for reminding me!
Recently did an icord edge on a cardigan, so my internet searching about pick up rates for icord edges is fresh! I think it’s same needle size -> pick up 3 of every 4 sts; smaller needle size -> pick up every st; and as-you-go icord edge is more equivalent to one icord “stitch” every two rows (same idea as counting slipped stitch heel flap rows) so that’s the tightest edge!
I also have been bamboozled by Malabrigo sock yarn! I had used their "Ultimate Sock" base and really enjoyed the knitting and the resulting socks, so I went to my LYS and bought (what I thought) was another skein of the same - long story shot it wasn't the same. It was their "Sock" base which is 100% wool. I still made socks but they have not worn as beautifully as I hoped. Maybe my own mistake for not noticing, but you are not alone!
I don't know the if there is a name for the bind off I use but it basically is knit 2, slip the 2 stitches back to the left needle and then k2tog, then *k1 slip the 2 stitches back to the left needle and then k2tog, repeat from * around. I knit all my socks toe up so this is the one I always use. It doesn't flair either, I also don't worry about if it is a purl stitch or a knit stitch. I do it the same all the way around.
yes! I think this is the classic stretchy bindoff?? ... or maybe it's not? hahaha it sounds very familiar, but k2tg through the back loop... i wonder if that part makes a difference.. either way, thank you for the suggestion! i am always curious about how other folks do their craft. :)
Totally get the meh feeling. It will pass when it passes. Can’t rush these things, I don’t normally gift knit, but this year I am knitting mini stockings for my coworkers (20 of them). Just felt like doing it since we are having a tough year. I might knit my mom a sweater, but that would be just because she loves one I made and it would make her happy.
I am in a gift knitting frame of mind! I just finished a lounger cardigan for my daughter that I started a year ago in October ( I had no idea what I was getting into lol). I love your videos and you have inspired me to make a blanket for my daughter-in-law!
i usually wash my blankets depending on the yarn content, not the other way around? so if i make my blankets with non-superwash, i'll make sure to soak it with wool wash instead of washing it in the washing machine. :)
Hello! Yes love all the blankets! I’m in full swing blanket crochet mode! Sometimes when I’m not feeling like knitting/crocheting I like to organize my yarn… I know kinda weird 🤦♀️I watch Lisa too.. but found you on instagram during the summer💜
you know what... that's not weird at all!! I've been feeling an itch to organize my yarn too! Maybe it's my soul seeking to be more inspired... Maybe we're subconsciously being nudged to look at what we've got so we can take inventory and hopefully have our lovely stash spark some joy again.
I'm not the wearer but I really do think the crazy & ivory striped socks are SO cute!! I get that if you're fixated on the charcoal being better you might feel meh about it.. but it's lovely
I’m here because of Lisa’s recommendation, but I’m subscribing because I really enjoy your episodes ❤. I recently tried the Hiyahiya Grandma’s stretchy bind off (Leanne of The Knitty Stew podcast suggested it) and I think it’s my new go-to. You might want to give it a try. Also, there are patterns for a heel flap and gusset when knitting toe-up socks. Two that I’m aware of are “I Read It In A Book” socks by Kerri Vandervoort and the “Dune Grass Socks” by Nancy Wheeler. Both are very easy to follow patterns.
I always have a tendency to cast on ALL the socks/musselburghs right before Dec. 1 when all the advents start, THEN I get overwhelmed with advent knitting, etc. etc. Somebody needs to tie me down!! I’m loving your idea about marling 2 fingering weight variegated yarns tog so you don’t have to alternate yarns!! Yay 🎉❤
I knit my heel flap and gusset toe up! I use Brenda’s Basic Toe-Up Sock pattern. I actually prefer knitting heel flap and gussets toe up over cuff down 😊
whaaatt??? my mind is blown right now. you're the second person to mention that heel flap and gussets are possible toe up, but the first to give a pattern. thank you for sharing it!
I use the JSSBO but only do a y/o every other stitch and doesn't flair as much. I use the pattern Candy Kisses Socks by Sivia Harding for toe up heelflap and gusset socks.
Hi! Im currently trying to finish as many projects I can before opening advents. I seem to always try to do this but if I don’t finish them, I’ll put them on hold. Although, I am feeling the gift knitting mood rising and decided to knit a couple of hats for this year. Regarding your socks, could you power through and do like a “Netflix and chill” with them? Sometimes that gives me the push through if I designate them to knitting while watching something. But I also agree that you should knit them however you want ❤.
Yes! I've been doing that recently - totally binge watching every and anything David Attenborough has ever narrated on Netflix to get through some of these projects I feel ambivalent about. haha!! It's working so far!
Here's your challenge for getting Sam's sweater done: 30 minutes a day BEFORE any other knitting! Use the jelly roll blanket as your reward for knitting on Sam's sweater. The sweater will be done in no time!!
Lisa sent me to you. My next pair of socks will be fraternal. I’m not sure if you do knit alongs but I love the idea of learning toe up to use up more yarn. I only know heel flap and gusset. I want to learn a new heel.
while you were talking about the crazy zauberball socks, I was going to suggest that you should just continue with the charcoal instead of the ivory and then you said the exact same thing! I think that's what you should do! Fraternal sock perfection! mwahaha!
I finished gift knitting early and rewarded myself with dyeing up the yarn for a fractured sweater. We shall see if that happens :) thanks for the real your awesome!
I am gift knitting, but next year IF I do it, I'm starting early. I thought starting in October would be soon enough, but nope. Well it would have been if I didn't say I was knitting all these gifts. 2 hats and seven pairs of socks. I'm almost finished, only 3 pairs of socks left, so I've rewarded myself with more cast ons lol
Too much gift knitting going on here and not enough for me but hey that’s my usual. I can relate to the meh moments of crafting in general. Still knitting though because it’s just a daily practice for me and is my daily breathe. Knit on through all things. Thinking about a Cozy Comfort Throw for my dad’s 89th birthday in February but that tbd.
I'm not sent by whoever Lisa is (I'll have to do research now, obviously.), but my algorithm nudged me in your direction. Probably due to the fact that I would be mad (or in prison, murder is NOT an option) without my knitting. I love how normal you seem - rambling like we knitters do. You could just redo the second sock with charcoal and an offset ivory stripe (and the burgundy, obviously.) it would become the Yin Sock of the pair. ☯ There's actually a lot of natural Sockyarns without poly in it that supposedly hold up just fine. I heard they should have tighter twist and maybe be knit with smaller needles.
ahaha Lisa @knitalltheyarn podcast is great! she too is very conversational - check her out! i'm glad the algorithm sent you my way though... you are in like company here. lol probably would've ended up in prison a loooonnnggg time ago if it wasn't for my knitting. ooohh... yinyang socks.... that is very intriguing indeed.. and you know what, you're right about the high twist natural yarns. i think i have heard something similar. i think my very limited experience has caused me to be a bit biased. hah!
I love your zauberball socks with the ivory. I think you're not loving the second sock because you haven't gotten into any of the darker/brighter colors yet. Also, I find it's easy for icord bind offs to be too tight. If you find you need a little more give as you're knitting it, Stephen West has a great little tutorial to add some stretchiness. th-cam.com/video/_CmnRYYbW2U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_HrwAiY6fRXNb3qI

LOVE the leg warmers. As a 80's child I LOVE leg warmers. I knit myself 2 pair as soon as I learned to knit.
