I grew up as a confirmed heavy metal fanatic; there was a period where all of us thought it was cool to put The Bee Gees down: “effeminate, disco, blah blah blah”. Age and maturity have shown me my error. They were brilliant songwriters and singers. When you want to snuggle with your wife on a cold December night, you won’t put on Megadeth, it’ll be the Bee Gees. 😆

And took so much shit from our fellow metal friends who refused to take the challenge of stepping out their musical comfort zones, not enlightened as those of that took that step and realized that it only added to our musical comfort.
I was never a metal fan. But rock. And 70s we had to be in the closet listening to the BeeGees. This appreciation now is so nice to hear and hearing experts tell me why it’s so great.

Bee Gees were pure genius. Their harmonies were outstanding. No other band can get near them.
The Debarge family is similar if not better than them.. Bobby Debarges falsetto is actually better than Barry's and thats hard to do...
I dunno, Queen and The Beatles were pretty good amongst others....

I don't know which I enjoy more... your analysis of the music and vocals, or the expression of sheer joy you have when you hear something you like. Saying that you were never much of a Bee Gees fan leads me to think that your experience with them predates your love of music. They're from an Era where vocals and orchestration went hand-in-hand, so to truly listen to them you have to not just hear the vocals but also see how they interact with the music.
I'm only 42. I experienced them in the mid 80s because my mother listened to them. Good memories for me. Plus I have all their albums.
@@kennethwilliams5063 Me too. I am 42 going on 43 and grew up listening to them because of my parents and I wouldn't have it any other way. My parents played all the old greats so I got a good education on what true talent sounds like.
The amazing thing is that this was a rehearsal. When they played it back, they looked at each other and said,"You can't beat that." So they released it.
A ridiculous assertion. This is their most complex studio production, containing 27 layered vocal tracks. It's sonically beautiful, but not live and certainly not a rehearsal.

These guys have been performing and writing music since 1955. Even as a solo act, Barry is still performing. As far as longevity and their special sound, nobody can hold a candle to the Bee Gees. Considering what they do with their voices, as a vocal coach, you should be a huge fan. No autotune or other crap was ever needed, just pure talent.

hmmm... not what you hear here. Impossible - there are sections when only Robin and Maurice are seen singing, but you hear at least 3 parts. Still, what they did in the studio required some insane skills.

Everyone gives Barry so much praise, and well deserved; but let us not sleep on how spot on the twins are as well. Truly amazing voices.

Maurice gets the least amount of love. But he was amazing coming even his falsetto in the live version of nights on Broadway is quite good

I would say "never a fan of the Bee Gees" would indicate a person has not given them a chance . Growing up in the 1970's we were exposed to them through continuous radio play. They were a mega talented band with a huge list of excellent songs they wrote and performed.
Completely agree. Im only 26 but I grew up listening to all the bands my dad listened to when he was growing up. So The Beatles, The BeeGees, Pink Floyd, Queen, etc. Obviously I have my own tastes now but its always great going back and listening to those bands

So easily the most often overlooked of legendary acts. Decades upon decades of incredible performances, hit songs, but hit songs Barry wrote for other stars as well. The brothers Gibb are on the same level as The Beatles. Barry Gibb the oldest and lone surviving of the brothers has been relevant in music his entire life. How many can say that?
I was lucky enough, to grow up listening to the Bee Gee's, & IMO, there will never be another group as multi-talented as them :)

Disco is a cheap shot, they said they were R&B, as were many others that were labeled disco.
Some of my fondest memories of my life with my late wife were those nights (there may have been some wine involved) we put on the Bee Gees and danced the night away. They were brilliant and unique. Wonderful song writers with the voices and harmony of angels. Oh, and we would cradle our little dog between us while we danced. He loved them too.

They wrote their own music but, beyond that, you should really look up their history on who/how many top hits they wrote for other performers. They were among the most successful and prolific writing teams as well as top performers.

The thing I never hear people mention is how much fun they are having singing together. The twins give each other eye contact and little smiles.
They all had a great sense of humor, but Maurice was mostly the cut up. For all the talk about Barry's falsetto, credit has to be given to Robin for his vibrato. Both, very unique voices & beautiful. Maurice tied it all together making their harmony one of the very best ever.

Randy Newman said, the Bee Gees were the most professional group he ever worked with. When the Bee Gees hit the studio they were totally prepared and knew exactly what they wanted and how to get it.
Gotta love Bee Gees! I actually have the album this song is from ("Spirits Having Flown") on vinyl. Now, I need to play the whole thing.

Three brothers voices that are perfect harmony
Like many people I first discovered the Bee Gees through their work in the disco era. I later stumbled onto their "Here at Last... Bee Gees Live" double live album which opened me up to all of the great music they have written and recorded. There is a reason these guys were so revered by everyone in the industry - they are giants. Some of their earlier songs like I Started a Joke, Massachusetts, etc. are just wonderful. Great reaction!
I didn’t know about their pre-disco catalog until I bought one of their greatest hits albums maybe 10 or 15 years ago. I actually find that I prefer the songs that Robin does lead vocals on. As unique as Barry’s voice is, Robin is another level of unique.

It makes perfect sense that this family of boys who all sang including the youngest, Andy, would get a break and bring their lovely voices and arrangements to the world !

This was a really good reaction! You obviously know what you are talking about. Barry´s natural chest voice is extremely deep and good, and in my opinion better than his falsetto. These Harmonics are so great. And like all said before... There was no Autotune or something like that. Thats pure Greatness.
You’d prob enjoy their documentary “How Do You Mend a Broken Heart”! They’ve been singing together since they were little, so you’re right on that. No formal training. Barry and Robin would work on their harmonies and Maurice new instinctively where to fall in to complete the three part harmony. It was said in the documentary “when you’ve got brothers singing together, it’s like an instrument nobody else can buy”. They have an amazing, huge catalogue of songs, and have written and produced many hits for other artists!
I never noticed that tremolo thing before, it's really unique. I actually find the Bee Gees quite frightening, especially Barry. The precision of those harmonies is insane though, you can actually hear some sort of chorusing happening, some kind of phase cancelation going on between them, I'm not even sure how that's humanly possible.
It happens because they all were great singers with perfect pitch...

I've heard a lot of vocal coaches say similar things about Johnny Cash and "Hurt". He owns his voice and the years of heartache and triumph come pouring out of his vocals. It can't be faked. You know it when you see it, I guess. Bee Gees are so unique talents. Amazing song.

They first appeared on Australian TV singing one of Barrys songs when Barry was 11 and the twins were 8. By the age of 12 Barry had written over 40 songs and local Aussie artists were starting to record his songs. That is on TH-cam.
They lived at Redcliffe, Queensland about 10 miles from our house. I went to their last concert at the State Theatre, Sydney, before they left for fame and fortune overseas.
The BeeGees - bloody fantastic songwriters, performers and musicians - their harmonies are peerless, and they have written some of the late 20th Century’s greatest songs. Modern artists take note - this is true talent! No silly choreography, gimmicky daftness, auto-tune or PR silliness. Just pure talent!
And these guys were fully self taught, singing in harmony from as young as 6
Brotherly-Love will feel as a mountain, but together they can encompass it all.
I am so glad that I grew up in The Bee Gees era, to this day I perform some of their songs and they are not easy to do. They were a rare gem to the world. Angels sent to sing to us.

I've watched every reaction on TH-cam to this song, and I still hear new things. There are so many little grace notes in the performance, arrangement, and production.
Their range, harmony and song writing skills are second to none. If you have not been a fan of Bee Gees then you need to check out more of their huge catalog. Please react to Fanny Be Tender. It is my fav Bee Gee’s song and I think you might like it!
Another album worth listening to, is Bary Gibb and Barbra Streisand, Guilty. In fact, Barbra Streisand herself, is worth a reaction and listening to .
I’m a baritone with around the same tone as Barry and I’ve been fascinated by his falsetto for a while. I practiced imitating him and found out that without that nasality it takes way more air to sing in that range and it doesn’t sound as good. When you sing with your nose just the right way, there is a sort of resonance that happens between the nose and the mouth cavities that sort of sharpens the high frequencies and smoothens the lower ones, kind of like you can mute some instruments to change their tone. It results in a clearer sound that you wouldn’t expect from a baritone if he just tried to push his vocal chords without.
I remember seeing something years ago where the BeeGees were being interview in the studio, they were talking about always having something happening in a track to grab/keep the attention of the listener. Which seems to explain all those little vocal flourishes where maybe there would otherwise being a pause or a space.
A vocal coach who has never LISTENED to the Bee Gees.

I love your interpretation Beth, as well as the very precise explanation. As a super fan of the Bee Gees, I would love if you dig into their huge musical catalog, I am not mentioning any song because I won't ever end, but these brothers wrote, produced and sang true works of art throughout 5 decades, you will not be disappointed.
You should sample some of their work well before the disco era and Sat Nite Fever. Try "I Started a Joke" or "Massachusetts".

The Stylistics are great but they sung ballads mostly, they could never sing power falsetto which the Bee Gees are in a league of there own.

Great analysis of this song and the Bee Gees harmonizing. At the 7:52 mark, you say you have never been much of Bee Gees fan... I would think that with your knowledge of what they are doing you would be a mega-fan. I only knew a fraction of what just pointed out and I have been a fan since their start in the 1960's. Another, aspect is that they kept reinventing themselves all the while keeping their unique voices. When they came out with Jive Talking even seasoned radio personnel were dumfounded. They had written them off as three brothers singing folk type songs.
They were such fantastic writers too... I mean come on, 'Nobody gets too much love anymore. It's as high as a mountain and harder to climb'. Hits me every time
I mean they did have their ? moments too..."I see you every morning outside the restaurant... the music plays ... so nonchalant..." like was it that important to put nonchalant in the lyrics. :P

Having lived as a 20-year-old through the mid-60's on, you would have had to be there to really appreciate their most unique, beautiful harmonies during that time..
They sang so high in this song and then so easily, went up an octave and it was not a problem for them either.. :) It is sad to think now, the only one alive is Barry, the one in the middle of this trio... :(
Perhaps sometime, you may want to watch the movie - "Saturday Night Fever" which featured the Bee Gees, and starred a young John Travolta...

Amazing band. And to think there was a backlash in the early 80s against disco and radio stations happily promoted "Bee Gee Free" weekends and such. This band was iconic and didn't deserve that. Luckily they kept working on through it all even with slight shifts in genres because they had that talent to perservere.
Growing up in Brooklyn and filming Saturday Night Fever in my neighborhood this was our Soundtrack in a way i still tear up listening to them the trigger such beautiful memories and the music and lyrics still fills with joy 40 yrs later They were truly a phenomenal group and I don’t think will have this again
The seventies was the birth of something unique.

Back in the 70s that type of high note was actually fairly common. But only the Bee Gees made it last. The modern band The Darkness were successful for taking the mickey out of that early 1970s sound.
Part of the genius of the Bee Gees was the fact that they were brothers who had been singing together from almost the start - how many bands can claim that length of being constantly together like that?

Beth, I really enjoyed your reaction. Truth be told, the finished product you’re listening to is a bit of studio trickery - in the best possible way. There are 21 vocal tracks on “Too Much Heaven” - some are the brothers’ voices individually, while others are them singing together. But, as their co-producers would tell you, they multi-tracked so accurately that they didn’t listen to playback while they added layers. The vibrato/tremolo and phrasing was just automatic. Laser-precise. They really were some of the best singers in music history.
Always loved these brothers. Oddly, as I've read and heard, Barry came to use that falsetto voice mid-career, after many early BeeGees hits... and their popularity (ahem, along with the Saturday Night Fever songs) took off again!!!
He only discovered his ability for it when producer Arif Mardin asked if one of them could "scream in pitch" for background "ad libs" on the "Nights on Broadway" song.

I agree with you for some songs, but I think the fading suits this one well. Hey Jude would be another example, but it's perhaps a bit more experimental for its time.

I know this sounds like a silly question, but hear me out.. I wonder if Barry’s rather prominent teeth have an impact on the resonance of his voice when he places it that far forward?
Idk but it's been said that Freddie Mercury didn't get his teeth "fixed" even tho he was a bit embarrassed about them, because he was afraid doing that would negatively impact his singing!

They have been singing together since little kids in Manchester. I love the pre and post disco sounds the most with Barry’s soulful, silky smooth chest voice and Robins very emotional vibrato. What other group has spanned 5 decades of recording and performing, changing their sound with the times but still keeping their uniqueness. One of maybe even my all time favorite group. They have a song and sound for every mood…masters of their craft. On top of that such nice guys too!
Considering how tight Barry's jeans were it's no wonder he was able to hit those high notes ;) I am impressed by how
tightly synchronized their tremolo/vibrato was. I honestly liked their music better before they started doing all the
falsetto stuff.
I miss when bands would modulate the chorus during the outro. It was a very 70's thing to do but, it's great.

"not much of a Bee Gees fan"... I think your facial expressions betrayed you... you are a fan. They are one of the greatest groups ever. There is a documentary on either Netflix or Amazon you should watch. They aren't just a great group... they are one of the greatest groups ever.
Some of those signature quirks are what enabled the Bee Gees to tickle the feel-good centers in our souls.

This period was probably the high point of their vocal abilities. It was the time at which they were most comfortable with not just their style and presentation, but the control over the production process. It lasted a while too. But if you want the peak, this was it.

They look genuinely happy singing. Most artists are too focused on the singing and I guess after so much work and shows you get tired but these guys always look like they are enjoying it.
Yeah I cry when I hear the BEEGEES because I grew up with my Mom listening to them often and it takes me right back. Mom, a professional singer sounded like Karen Carpenter who also makes me cry. Music in those days was so good and unique. I watched a doc on the BEEGEES and how they stumbled on that falsetto sound and decided to run with it based on the time and musical style. So unique and so much a part of peoples lives who grew in that time. Miss you Mom.
