    Robin’s voice was the Bee Gees' secret weapon. A truly incredible instrument - melancholy and emotional.

      Robin was why the Bee Gee songs were so diverse. They were able to sing a wide range of songs that were all hits. Two such songs that are so different from each other are Saturday Night Fever and Too Much Heaven. Ghee, all 3 of these guys were super talented.

    Robin’s voice was full of hesitancy and vulnerability but when Barry and Maurice joined in, there was full blown release of emotion. The BeeGees are masterful song writers and performers who clearly love what they’re doing.

    For some weird reason, everytime I hear this song, I end up bawling my eyes out. I'm not sure if it's the lyrics, the music, Robin's voice or the fact that I just love Robin and the Bee Gees - but it's been happening for 30 years. There will NEVER be another band like them.

      Do you know that Barry said they “wrote this song in a dressing room full of strippers. Bare bums and all.” He said that not that many years ago in an radio show with Alec Baldwin. That makes you think of this song in a whole different way in my mind. It actually makes it funny to me. All the stripers but the guys “can’t see nobody.” Yeah, ok…..8-)

    • @laureldevine
      @laureldevine ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@cababyboomerq6012 Wow, no I didn't know that! I did watch an interview where Robin and Maurice said they wrote one of their songs while sitting on outdoor steps, waiting for their ride to pick them up!! They were amazing writers, like they were "sent" the lyrics from above.

    • @beeharbour
      @beeharbour ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Whether a dressing room full of strippers was an ideal environment for young men to grow up in is open to debate. They were playing in those types of environments from the time they were literally children. Pa Gibb used to plan the performances with Barry (a child himself) but the twins were left to wander about on their own amongst the performers and clientele of strip joints and sleazy nightclubs "making mischief". Maurice reported losing his virginity at age 9. This was considered "lucky " by those who heard the tale back in the '70s but today is recognized as rank pedophilia. I wonder what they all 3 experienced and how they emerged as stable adults from what was in fact an awful upbringing. They had such overwhelming talent that they would have succeeded without having been deprived of their childhoods under the highly questionable parenting they were given. Not just having to support the family at a very young age but being taken out of school before any of them came close to a high school diploma. I heard Robin once express some regret that he couldn't have had an opportunity to attend university but that was decided for him at about age 12. Their parents then allowed Andy to drop out of school at the same age when there was no financial imperative whatsoever; their wealthy sons were supporting them in style and Andy might have waited until he was 18 to begin adding to the coffers but, no, he was out of school at 13 and being groomed for stardom, managed by his mother.

      It’s funny that you mention his smiling. In several interviews, the guys talk about how their dad would be in the audience constantly reminding them to smile on stage. Perhaps that’s why he was so practiced at smiling while he sings. Such a wonderful moment! This performance, in my opinion, is the best version of this song that I have seen.

    Tomorrow --- September 1st , 2020 is Sir Barry Gibb's 74th birthday and his 50th wedding anniversary with his lovely Lady Linda ! I remember being disappointed then that he had not waited for me --- I was 16 then and had loved them since Mining Disaster had come out. But Barry has always been my favorite ,but I eventually realized that he had made the right choice in a wife. " Words " has always been my favorite song of theirs and they ,in my opinion , finally surpassed the beloved Beatles as the best group ever. In the 60s we Boomers were so blessed --- every minute for years the radio poured out glittering jewels and more treasures. Now, for those who , justly or unjustly, criticize Boomers ---- I have only a one - word defense : Music.
    Fil, you're the best in your field and I always learn something from you. Rock !

      I also was introduced to the Bee Gees when SNF was in theatres. I'm so lucky that now in my retirement days I have all the time I want to do deep dives into music via TH-cam.
      For someone that has grown up with access to the internet, this is probably strange but I am grateful every day that the internet was invented. For most people my age it is a wonder that never ceases to delight. I'm continually tickled that I can indulge my every curiosity with a few short keystrokes.
      Being born in the early 1960s has been such a gift. I was a teen after the invention of the pill and the sexual revolution but before AIDS. Now during my days of leisure I have been granted tools that allow me to learn about anything that flits through my brain.

  • @kurtcpi5670

    This is an interesting analysis, but it misses the most important aspect of Robin Gibb's performances: He never misses a note. I'm not talking about struggling to hit high notes or failing to attempt the same range as in the studio. I'm talking about perfection. When Robin Gibb opened his mouth on stage you heard EXACTLY the note he intended to sing. He had perfect pitch and perfect execution of pitch. He frequently plugged his ear in order to be SURE he could hear what he was singing. The other Gibb brothers were very good in that regard, but didn't achieve the same level of perfection as Robin.

    Great analysis about how and why singers--this time Robin in particular--draw you in with the emotion that affects their singing. Also, I appreciate how you explained why the Bee Gees weren't really singing in falsetto most of the time--because they could only hold those long notes with the head voice. I've been a Bee Gees fan since I was a kid--I like all of the eras and collaborations. As always, your exploration into Robin's artistry is spot on!

      Not exactly, they pretty much shared lead in the beginning, however there is no doubt they used Robin's voice because it had that hunting sound and it clicked with the audience at the time.
      This is why they had a fall out in 1969 when they should decide on which song should be lead on the single from the album Odessa. Should it be Lamplight with Robin or First Of May with Barry. Their producer choose First Of may and Robin said "I've had it" and left the group. Luckily for us fans they were back together a year later.
