Thanks for sharing this informative video and your honest owner opinions. Ignore the haters/Toyota fanboy comments! For the money we spend on these cars we have the right to nitpick.
As a 21 Sienna owner, I have none of the issue that are shown here-not a single one. Everything works, it's comfortable, quiet and frankly, if these are issues, I doubt they are the worst you have seen in life. I wish you well.
I drove a Platinum limited for 2 days (while my old Sienna was getting repaired) a few months ago, and simply loved it. The grandkids loved it as well. Price tag was over 50k and too steep for me. Extremely comfy, larger steering wheel (soft too), CVT smooth trans, lots of power. 0 negatives. The center console would take a little getting used too. 36mpg, cool with me.
They definitely drive much better than the 3rd gen vans. Substantially more quiet and smooth. We overall really like ours. But those darn tiny cup holders!
We actually bought a small DVD player and hooked it up to the HDMI port and it kind of works. To store items, we have behind-the-seat storage pockets. As for the emergency road items, we store them with the spare tire like you did.
ALL your observations are EXACTLY what I noticed when we bought ours! All the bumps in the floor make it practically impossible to vacuum unless you have a tiny detailing tool. But even then, the carpet they use is like glue - it's so hard to get stuff out of it! I was surprised with how much I missed the second glove box, AND the coin holder. Such simple items that made a ton of sense - wish they hadn't done that. People seem to be critical of the point you made about the cup holders, but it's VALID. Most metal water bottles are a pretty standard size these days. They fit perfectly in the previous model...and now none of them fit in this one...we constantly have our hydro flasks rolling all around the car floor. That one was a huge miss in this model. We are completely confused about the decision to scrap those third row compartments...I mean, I did find all manner of weird stuff my kids had forgotten about, but it was GREAT storage! We DO love our car, but it's these little details that make our investment a little disappointing. Thanks for the video!!
Thanks Anna! I was laughing reading about hydro flasks rolling around the floor. Sounds just like us! You are right on point about the carpet. Get a 4’x6’ moving blanket to keep on that floor when the 3rd row is folded. Easier to slide stuff in/out, but will also save that carpet (and a fair bit of vacuuming). I really appreciate you taking time to comment, and appreciate the laugh!
YES ...Problem is the entire center consol : a deal breaker for me since I want a pass tru to the rear of the van wihtout going outside .I could easily live with a simple aluminum plate supporting the gear lever , the only thing essential in this area ...but the way in which the plastic trim are shared between the consol and the dashboard prevents it from being removed without breaking everything.I would have liked to make a mini camper. The delete of the second row is an easy task compare to my project.
Agree completely. Some things we miss from our 06 Sienna: (1) power folding third-row, (2) no sunglass holder, (3) shallow cubby in center console, (4) adjustable roof rack cross rails, and (5) AC outlets (our 21 didn't come with the option).
Thank you for this. I was in hurry to get the 2021 and my husband told me to wait, because is going to be Trial and error, and they will make the necessary changes in 2022 if not 2023. Let wait and see, if they will Rectify the mistakes
Wow great video! Didn't know about all the cons. No coin tray, cup holder sucks, trunk seal loose, no dvd, trunk storage not even. I was so excited until I saw this video. Toyota drop the ball on this one. Especially for Dads!
They definitely missed on several things. Don't get me wrong, it's still a nice van and the gas mileage is awesome. But they could have done better. Thx for watching!
i agree on the lumpy floor and non-opening rear quarter glass. Those are steps backwards. The rear weather seal easily coming off is a problem I've had on other cars too. Sometimes warm weather will soften that adhesive and that's what happens. It should not be happening on a brand new car.
as a 2015 sienna limited premium owner, i agree with your complaints. it seems as if this generation is not carefully thought out or engineered well. seems like toyota took many shortcuts and made the car not very user friendly. i mean it gets great gas mileage, but thats pretty much it.
It seems to me that what used to be XLE, they now just call Limited. It’s like the just moved all the badges, but didn’t really change the trims. We like the van more than we dislike it, but the overall quality just seems to be less than what it used to be. Thanks for the comments and watching!
Thanks for pointing out these things. I was considering the ‘21 Sienna XLE fwd, but due to inventory shortage I decided to hold off. I do agree with your opinions. I wish the middle bridge can still be a pass through like the previous gen. The cup holders suck, unless we all drink small size coffees or mini coca cola cans. Also, with a van, one would think there’ll be a ton of family stuff everywhere, but yet the Sienna lacks efficient storage. I feel Toyota oversold the hybrid and mpg features of the van but completely botched the practicality and functionality of a van.
100% agree on all fronts. I really miss a cd player up front. It's just me on long road trips out of radio range. I too utilize the spare wheel compartment for storage of jumper cables, chains etc. Good job on review. Oh, I have found that if i put a regular drinking cup (think dollar store) in the smaller cup holders up front they hold my regular thermoses much better. Also, check out the round cylinder tissue holders. They fit perfectly in the back small cup holders and they are refillable from regular tissue boxes. Works great.
These are all valid points. Seems like back in the day they (toyota and everyone else) really put a lot of effort into doing nifty little tricks to maximize space in a vehicle, and charged a much more fair price for the vehicle relative to cost of living. Now they just kinda throw it together and as long as it looks modern that's all that matters. I like the LE trim for its practicality but they purposely left out features that in my opinion should be standard on a $40k vehicle (like keyless entry, leather steering wheel, heated front seats and remote start). 10 years ago subaru was putting heated seats in a $20k impreza. I haven't been able to find any 23s to compare but on the 21s the body fitment is super poor. Almost to the point that you wonder if the vehicle has been in a wreck and wasn't repaired correctly. We looked at an odyssey along side the sienna and I was super impressed with the materials and fitment of the odyssey. Just felt very high quality although I don't know anything about their reliability compared to toyota. If they ever make a good hybrid system with awd on the odyssey, the sienna will be DONE unless they make significant improvements. This van is probably the best looking one yet but it's more form than function. Also don't even get me started on paint. The paint would be more durable on these vans if you spray painted them.
Great input! You are right on point. I do notice the body panels in the front often look a bit off. I honestly wish that every minivan manufacturer was making an AWD version. Would be better for consumers. I see countless Odysseys on the way to the ski hill, all dealing with chains. That looks miserable. Not sure what’s taking Honda so long to figure this out!
Too much nit picking. It's quite obvious Toyota went the cost cutting route for this gen (interior). You can't expect your huge tumbler will fit every cupholder as they were definitely designed for plastic bottles. The two front cup holders are for the huge tumbler. The smaller ones are for tea and coffee from fast food restaurants.
I think between the two, sliding doors is one of the most important considerations. Your kids can’t door ding the Tesla you are parked next to if you have sliding doors.
I own a 2021 Limited and agree with all of the issues pointed out that are common to my vehicle. I don’t have the entertainment TV screen in the second row. I solved the absence of the rear cubby hole space by putting a sturdy cardboard box in the back. I love the open tray in the front - but had to lay down thin strips to keep stuff from sliding. I don’t have little children, so 2nd row storage is not an issue. I do have the ottoman feature in the middle row - is that ever a nice feature for taking naps at rest stops on long trips. I share some of your issues and appreciate your tip about the extra space around the spare - I never considered that. In sum. I just love this van. It handles better than any of the other vans I’ve owned - Dodge, Toyota, and Honda. It’s almost like driving a sedan - and better handling than my recent model CRV. It quiet. It rides smoothly. It has more than enough pickup - sure there is engine roar, but so does my CRV and so did my Austin Healey 3000. And best of all, I can’t believe the high Mpg. On two very long trips I averaged 39 to 40 mpg (which is higher than advertised). On the whole, the nicest machine I have ever owned.
I totally agree about how nice it drives. It's super comfy and pretty darn quiet. And that gas mileage is amazing! The other item I've noticed so far (after15k miles) is that the tires still have plenty of tread left. The Gen3 version in AWD would burn through tires in less than 20k miles every time. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
@@DadDoingStuff I have the 2022 Platinum (that's all they were getting and still had to wait 4 months to get it) and agree with everything you said in the video. Cup holder size is incredibly annoying. The Japanese designers must think we still drink coffee out of small Styrofoam cups in America. I have an iPhone12 pro max with a thin rubber case. No way that fits in any of the pockets especially the one up near the dash. My wife's doesn't either. I had to buy a specially designed holder made for the 4th gen Sienna that works great off eBay and it has a charger too. Works great but costs ~$65. Worth it for a van we are keeping for years. I highly suggest it. The front ledge charger is a joke as you pointed out. How can you possibly see it when it is face up sideways under an overhang in front of the shifter? Somebody slap the designers. (Another for the undersized cupholders). Sienna'
My top 2 things I dislike. 1. Why did they change the rear seat lights. They were perfect in the previous version. The light in the back doesn't illuminate the cargo area when the seats are up. 2. the qi charging in the front is worthless. Even sitting still we can't reliably get our iphones to charge without their cases on.
Dude, you are right on point about that wireless charger. Worthless indeed. We NEVER use it. And yeah, I gotta see if maybe there is an aftermarket LED that could replace the factory lights. Stock ones are definitely not bright!
Thank you for the 100% real and honest identification of issues. Typically You Tube reviewers sing the praises of their purchases and gloss over any issues.
Yes we use them to hold a to-go coffee on occasion, and they work fine for that. But they really suck on road trips where everyone in the family has a water bottle, and they also won’t hold my Starbucks commuter mugs. I was able to find a specific insulated coffee mug that is skinny enough to fit, but most of the stuff we own won’t work. My whole point is that they can do better. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I have been eyeing the 2021 Sienna for a while now. But never really got to the decision point of buying it. Your video is an eye-opener. I will rather wait for a year more or go with Odyssey.
If you don't need AWD, there are definitely more options out there. AWD was mandatory for us, so we didn't even look at the Odyssey. This is still a decent van....just think they could have done better in a few areas.
2022 platinum here. The other great gripe is the lane tracking. My other car is a Tesla X and I have to say, the Sienna is a joke at best. It holds the lane when it wants to and starts to randomly wander over the line and then alarms on itself because it can't keep itself on the road. Had to turn the wheel shaker off for the same reason as it was constantly going off as the car ran up on other cars and departed the lane when it was supposed to be centering and driving. Toyota has a long way to go just to get up to Tesla autopilot ability. Basically rudimentary and untrustworthy. Almost unusable. Love the car otherwise as it drives so much better than our older 2017 model even.
Problem is the entire center consol : a deal breaker for me since I want a pass tru to the rear of the van wihtout going outside .I could easily live with a simple aluminum plate supporting the gear lever , the only thing essential in this area ...but the way in which the plastic trim are shared between the consol and the dashboard prevents it from being removed without breaking everything.I would have liked to make a mini camper. The delete of the second row is an easy task compare to my project.
Very good video, thank you! I used to have a 2015 Sienna LE, and I think it had better interior and exterior features, for example like you mentioned flat floor, removable second row, third row sun shades, hidden rear window wiper, I think they had to lower built quality in order to add the hybrid system and keep the starting price the same.
Thanks for sharing all the frowns. I totally agree with your assessments. I was considering Toyota van but after watching this I have changed my mind . Thanks for the info on this
I am only 5"8 and still hitting heads on second row when exiting and also passenger sit, which is very high. I can't believe how low the new 2021 sienna roof is.
I know this is an older comment, it I just had a friend of mine riding shotgun the other day and I did notice the head room in the front seat. Granted he’s 6’4” but his head was touching the ceiling.
For the hate #1 you should be aware that batteries take some place . Place like the under spare tire was . So that why this gen loose many cavities here and there
So you use tire chains on your Sienna? If so what kind and what area do you live in? I'm in western Nebraska and live in the country in gravel/dirt roads
We carry chains (some generic pair) but have never had to put them on even once. Good tires and the AWD has always been more than enough. We are currently running the BFG Advantage TA tires from Costco and we are really happy with them.
@@DadDoingStuff that's great to hear. I can't remember what I saw on the 2024 model I test drove, but they looked decent. So you live in an area with lots of snow?
Don’t let this totally steer you away from the new van. Overall it’s an improvement, and the gas mileage alone just about makes it worth getting the hybrid.
Excellent video. I have a '17 Limited premium with technology package, reclining second row seats, and power third row seats. Think I will keep it around for a while..!
I agree. I have 2015 Sienna and had very similar impression when I brought it brand new. No doubt, it is a reliable, long lasting car, but I was depressed by its poor material quality and finishes. I am surprised by 50k+ price tag on 2021~22 Sienna. Plastic wheels in this price range? Ridiculous.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah few things are definitely frustrating for that $50k+ price tag. Hopefully it will have Toyota’s known reliability. And hopefully they see customer feedback to keep improving. Thx for watching!
Good vid. Did you use your tire chains at all? which brand? Also, i've got a 22 xle and the rear seats jump up slightly when i hit a bump mileage has decreased somewhat and the range also but i'm wondering if i need a reset on the odo . Lastly, the front seat is just ok on long trips for my lower back. Not horrendous but could be better. The van has it's quirks for sure.
Thx for commenting. I’ve never had to use my chains once. This thing rocks in snow so long as you use good tires. Watch my 40k mile update video for more details. Cheers!
Haha wow. The smaller cup holders are obviously for can beverages/ smaller cups; to accommodated drinks of all sizes, not 4 cup holders are meant for all 4 yeti tumblers. And that space for the "phone" is actually for anything that fits, wallets, sunglasses, face masks. I place my phone horizontal there. It's not a phone stand 😄😄😄😄I don't have the trunk gasket problem. Plenty of kids have climbed in and out of my trunk for 3 different occasions of firework viewing. Maybe the "wasted space" behind the spare is meant for all the storage that you are using it for 😄😄😄.
Interestingly, those small cup holders don't actually fit a regular 12oz soda can either. It will stay there, but it wobbles from side to side and won't sit all the way down. Best I can tell, those ones were made to fit tapered cups (like a Starbucks cup) which fit there nicely. I see a lot more people carrying reusable bottles these days and they tend to be larger in diameter, so I expect car manufactures will start making the cup holders larger over the coming years. Glad to hear your rear gasket is staying in place. We got our van before Thanksgiving last year so maybe is was from an early bad run or something. Either way, that gasket won't stay on for us at all. Thanks for watching.
Typical of Toyota that they still don’t have a good infotainment integration. I looked at one of these when they first came out and my first impression was that the interior trim was cheapened and the interior fit & finish was not up to Toyota standards. What’s worse is the 4 cyl hybrid power train which is noisy and under powered when you need to accelerate or pass, particularly on hills. Toyota should have offered an optional V6.
Hi Mark. Totally agree on the fit and finish. The tech keeps improving, but the materials feel cheap. Even the 3rd row seat is vinyl instead of leather like they used to be. The 4cyl in Eco mode is definitely weak when you need to get to speed quickly. I do notice that if you drop it into sport mode, it's got a LOT more power. It's one thing to remember while driving, but when I need to hustle onto the freeway or pass someone, I drop it into sport and it's good to go. Just can't keep it in sport if you want the good gas mileage. Thx for the feedback!
thanks for sharing and I still got the sienna because I've had good luck with toyota, and when I bought mine I also got the moving blanket, great idea and thanks ...
@@DadDoingStuff glad to hear ,, when i saw this video , i went to ACE and they had a moving blanket that was 3'9" by 6 feet that fits really good no cutting ,,, i like your dad doing stuff, cool,,, Im a dad and grand dad now.doing stuff :) beautiful
Maybe its time to get Honda Odyssey because it will address everything you just mentioned in this video. I have the 2022 Odyssey Touring. Great Video review though.
Putting aside the lack of Hybrid and AWD options, Odyssey is behind in terms of features when comparing to Sienna - heated captain chairs, bird-view camera, digital rear mirror, 4-zone climate control. The next generation of Odyssey would likely have these features - I believe Odyssey is due for a redesign in 2024??
Thank you so much for the info. We were planning to trade our 2015 Sienna XLE for the new one based on the MPG. I am having second thoughts about getting the newer model now.
Check out our other video. We still really like this van over all. They did drop the ball in a few places and in my opinion, the newer "Limited" is closer in trim to the older "XLE". That said, there are some sweet tech features standard on this van that are pretty nice. Our last XLE didn't have stuff like adaptive cruise control, lane assist, stuff like that. But that gas mileage is hard to pass on. After 7k miles we are now averaging 33.3mpg, which is WAY better than the old V6. Hope that helps!
@@DadDoingStuff omg THANK YOU so much for your honest review of the dislikes. We were thinking about trading in our 2015 Sienna too but we're hesitant because we would be downgrading from a V6 to a 4 cylinder with battery.
@@marlieyanglis I’ll be honest, the engine/drivetrain is one of the things we LIKE the most. Getting 34mpg after 11k miles. In eco mode, it feels under powered, but if you pop it into Sport mode, the thing accelerates really well. It feels darn close to the V6 in my opinion. And the gas mileage is almost double. We were getting about 18mpg with the old V6. Thanks for watching!
You missed front seat passenger gets out. And the seatbelt alarm goes off. No one in seat. Only thing I’ve found was seat belt extender to fix. Not right.
You are right on point, and it’s not just the front seat. Since this review we’ve noticed that if a 3rd row seat is occupied, you park but leave van running, and that passenger gets out, the seat belt alarm will start going off when you start to drive. It thinks there is still someone in that seat. Only options are to let the alarm time out, or stop and restart the van. Definitely annoying and hopefully correctable via a future software update.
Oh my finally someone understands the problem. Frustrating all the forums mention this, just buckle up main response. No that person has left the vehicle or switched seats. Thank u for the nice reply.
If you live in a snowy area the snow will get stuck in between the trunk roof line and actual car roof and he won't be able to open the trunk once it starts to turn ice it pinches on the roof line and get stuck with the electrical components on the trunk itself I have photos but I can't upload them
That’s really good feedback. Thinking about how that back hatch opens, yeah I could totally see snow/ice getting jammed in there and causing problems. They definitely didn’t think of that when they engineered the hinge system on that rear hatch!
I agree with you. We did take it to the dealer, and they shrugged their shoulders then suggested WE might try to glue it on. Dealers sometimes are great at selling and less great at servicing. I’m really curious to see if anyone else has experienced the same issue with the seal.
Great video... totally agree with all these.. Wireless charger... doesn't work on any of our phones. I agree. I think it's that the phone slides around. We have a 2021 Sienna XSE... looks and drives great but also has plastic wheels. Also, Toyota wouldn't let us upgrade to the black 20's because we picked the AWD option...such a bummer. Hopefully Toyota will see this video and make some adjustments.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I’m curious, on the AWD XSE model, does it still come with the spare tire in the back? When we were doing the online configuration tool originally, it was pretty confusing as to which options/models came with the spare tire. Thanks!
@@DadDoingStuff Yes... it was an option unfortunately it's not on ours. That's one thing I wish I would have waited on. They did tell us that the tri-fold mat was not an option if we got the spare tire. Which I would be curious to see if it fit in a Sienna with the spare tire.
@@hfdewees I thought that might be the case. We originally wanted the brown interior, but the spare tire option wasn’t available unless you did the gray interior……because that makes tons of sense. The options/packages were confusing at best.
@@PeppersGhost55 did they remove the jack / jack cover from the bottom right side of the floor? Or maybe put something under the mat to level it up? I was actually watching another video about the spare tire after I saw this one and saw the reason... the jack is placed in the right corner of the cargo area (on the floor). This makes the floor uneven. I could have probably bought the trifold mat from the dealer after making the order but it was not allowed on the configuration when they ordered the van from the factor... only an option without the spare
I absolutely hate this van! The moment I pulled into my driveway from the dealership, the shifter fell off into my hand. Then, my 6 year old thought it would be funny to hit the door close button while I was getting my infant out of the second row car seat. The sliding door DID NOT STOP until I was pushed off my feet and sandwiched between the door and the frame. I wrote to Toyota and took it back to the dealership time and time again. They said the door sensitivity was tested on the others in the lot and it was not a defect in my particular vehicle. That should scare you! Third thing I hate is the air conditioning on the second row is almost non-existent. We live in the desert, and in order for my kids to be SAFE in the vehicle, I have to bring ice packs and water bottles for them to hold against their chests and drink from until the car cools down after about 5-8 minutes (this is crazy!) Fourth thing I hate is that you can't add a roof rack when you have a sun roof. Say what?! Yep. That's what the dealership told us. That's also what we found when looking it up online. Wtf?! Lastly, I just took it to get my oil changed and apparently my struts are leaking. The car only has 28,000 miles on it!!!!!!!!!!! I drive like a grandma!!!!!! Don't buy this piece of trash. I bought it for its good name, reliability, and hybrid feature. I cant wait to get rid of this POS and get ANYTHING else!
Interesting feedback for sure. A couple of things that will hopefully help. Not sure if you have the factory side rails, but if so you can 100% put racks on. I have Thule racks mounted to factory side rails and they are great. 2nd thing I learned, check to see if you are driving in “Eco” mode. If so, the second/third row AC will in-fact be nonexistent. Set the drive mode to normal and you will be cranking AC back there in no time. (I learned that the hard way and sounds like you are too). Regarding the sliding door safety, that definitely sounds defective. Ours re-open as soon as there is a blockage. The struts leanings sounds off too. That should be under warranty and they owe you new struts. We have 55k miles now and our struts have zero issues. Hope some of that is helpful!
When are people going to do the brilliant thing that Hyundai did with their Santa Fe? That is to put the spare tire underneath the vehicle! There is a crank in the storage area in the back of the Sante Fe to crank down the spare tire from under the vehicle. Because, as the reviewer points out, one NEEDS that space where the spare tire is sitting. And the bigger problem for those wanting to own this van over the long haul is that the hybrid battery in this ain't the same price as the one in the Prius folks. When this one goes it's a large bill.
I’d love if the tire was under the car! Hope we don’t end up with a battery replacement during the time we own this van. We have the extended factory warranty for 8 years on this van so if it does need replacement, I hope it’s within 8 years! Thanks for the feedback.
I agree 100% brother.. My 2013 Sienna was made soo much better than my 2021.. It seems like they didn't care about the way they made this one!!! Soo disappointed. But it's still Toyota, Reliability Wise..
In general, it’s a great van. And yeah it’s a Toyota, so not too worried about the reliability. However, every year the trim levels seem to drop in overall quality. That said, I’d still take this over any other minivan on the market right now.
2022 Sienna gets dust/mud/debris in the interior of the rear bumper and causes the "Toyota Safety Sense" to fail. No fix yet from Toyota. If you live in a dry area you may not experience the failure quickly, but debris/mud will eventually disable the RCTA and BSM sensors. I live in Helena, Montana, and can't get my sensors to last more than three weeks. The local dealership and Toyota tell me this is normal.
That doesn’t sound “normal” to me. We get quite a bit of road junk on the van while driving in wet/snow/etc. But we’ve never had our sensors disable……at least not yet and we are 20k miles in so far. Toyota needs to fix that!
Nice Video and I agree with all the points. I'm really disappointed with the fitment of the body panels...you really notice the shotty design when waxing it. Have you noticed the 3rd row seats popping up when hitting speed bumps?
Now that you mention it, I do notice the body panels don’t align as clean as they probably should. Not very noticeable on ours, but definitely visible. We’ve not had the seats do that, but you not the first viewer to mention the rear seats bouncing when going over bumps. Seems maybe Toyota forgot to do any test drives with those seats down. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@DadDoingStuff I have gen 3 and will likely upgrade in the 23 model. I couldnt fathom anything else other than a sienna. thanks so much. the thing that i noticed and found troubling was the rear fold down. I carry lots of luggage and that area is very special to me lol
The USB port is there so that if you're plugged in you can use your phone to pay for drive thru and whatnot while still staying plugged in. Cupholders I feel like there's a place to put most stuff. You're not gonna have 4 giant metal water bottles up front, that's why there are 2 XL cupholders and 2 regular size. Everything else is pretty valid. I actually dislike the whole heat/AC controls. The wireless mat is the worst. You need to be plugged in anyway.
Yup i was about to get the sienna le and when we went in our dealership oh my the cheapest made sienna ever i know it a is low trim but they went overboard to what is cheap and what is a budget van! Xle is same ridiculously cheap so we just went to get honda odyssey exl lol..
No ur making the hdmi way too hard. Buy a lightning to hdmi converter. It’s also great for hotels and rental houses so you can stream what you want from an ipad
No more than a 4-way adjustment for the power passenger seat. Even if you get the most expensive $50,000 plus trim!!! No height adjustment or cushion tilt for passenger side. But they give you a power adjustment for the steering wheel??? How many times are you going to use that?
Wait, you aren’t constantly moving your steering wheel up and down while you are driving? LOL! I really wish the front of the drivers seat would tilt more, but it doesn’t.
@@DadDoingStuff my experience with Japanese cars is when they do have fully adjustable power seats, they don't adjust nearly as much as European or American cars regarding to range of motion.
Ok I’m kinda worried about taking delivery next week. This doesn’t seem nearly as solid as my 2008 sequoia. Not even a little. If I get to the dealer and I drive it and do my inspection and it’s cheesy I’m not getting it. I’ll order a 4Runner or another sequoia.
Don’t get too down on it. We still like the van. And we honestly like it better than the gen3. Gas mileage alone is a huge factor, but it really does drive nice. Check out the 20k mile update I just posted.
I wouldn’t scratch it off the list. If you need a family hauler with great fuel economy, and AWD, it’s still a great choice. They just have a lot of room for improvement in my opinion. Thx for watching!
Great review, valid complaints especially when the gen3 has them or was functionally. I like the Honda odyssey interior layout and amenities. Everything is set up better and more user friendly. I want the tech and seats of the pacific, the reliability and resell of a sienna, and the everyday use ability / drivability of the Honda odyssey. Hate the reliability of the pacifica, the less mpg and transmission of the the odyssey, the cheap and pennies counter designed interior of the sienna. 🤦🏻♂️
It’s unfortunate. Not sure why they can’t bring in some real world folks for feedback and input during the design phase. The gas mileage is the saving grace for this new van.
I have 2021 limited as well. In Canada platinum is not available at all so limited remains the fully loaded version for us. I love it overall in many aspects but I agree with you in many points. I hate the media system. The wireless connection option is pretty much useless. I am okay with no DVD player but I can’t believe there is no usb direct play. I also wanna add that there is no rain sensor wipes. I am literally like wtf when I figured this out. The phone app is garbage too. I can’t get remote engine start to work. I am definitely not subscribing the service when trail expires. We have a Tesla as our secondary. Tesla app beats Toyota app by centuries.
You are right on point about that app. It’s a waste. We are letting ours expire. The annoying part is every time my wife’s phone connects via Bluetooth, it says we aren’t logged into the app and you have to click the “ok” button to get rid of the message. Not sure why they can’t just build remote start into the key fob instead. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment!
To me, the wireless casting feature is the best option. Just buy a decent Android tablet, download a bunch of media files, and use Miracast to project your tablet screen to the entertainment system. This is actually an awesome way to view anything, even games or apps on a tablet device. Why do you limit your display to only DVD and USB drive?
Great points about the rear gasket seal and dvd player! But the cup holders… they aren’t water bottle holders. They are made for store bought waters, sodas, fountain drinks etc And in regards to the space you should have opted for no spare tire so you have room to store that stuff?
05:19 why would you put electrical plugs that close to drink holders.... The 2021 sienna is literally a downgrade from the 2020. They need to go in reverse and bring back the V6... and move the shifter knob back
I miss the power of the v6, but only a little. The gas mileage (33.4 average over 7500 miles) has me sold. Our old V6 got 18 if we were lucky. But agree, they “downgraded” a lot of stuff from the previous gen.
Thanks for pointing out the plastic over alloy wheels. FYI after doing some research other people removed the plastic cover and did a minor finish work and had black alloy wheels. You can also paint it another color.
Was seriously looking at Sienna but for 𝗡𝗼𝗻-Stow And Go, even 𝗡𝗼𝗻-Removable 2nd row Seats 💺 is Big mistake, as well as the 𝗔𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 of a Panoramic Roof. That's why I choose less expensive -$7,500 FEDERAL TAX CREDIT, Chrysler Pacifica 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝗴-𝗜𝗻 Hybrid.
Yeah non -removable second row is brutal. Though I will say removing the second row in my 2010 sienna has caused more swearing to come out of my mouth than anything else. ha.
Good luck getting 32 miles DISTANCE with your Pacifica after which you have to charge it for 12 hours. The Several Chryslers and Dodges we had didn't last 100.000 miles but our previous Toyota Sienna lasted for almost 250.000 miles. Although I agree with several things in this video, I love our new Sienna limited. So far we are at 37.6 mpg.
That's awesome gas mileage! We are only at 33.3 after 7k miles. But the Yakima crossbars on the roof aren't helping. There are definitely a few Pacifica features I wish the Sienna had (like the stow n go 2nd row). But despite some of this stuff we dislike, we overall are still rather happy with the van. My wife likes it and that's what matters the most.
An advantage of the wheel covers is that if you park too close to the curb and scrape your wheels, rather than permanently damaging your nice alloy wheel, you can simply replace the wheel cover. I think you have some valid points but your presentation comes off as whining; very negative. Maybe simply state the facts and some ideas on how things should be improved.
Hi Brian. Thanks for the comments. I agree on the concept of replacing the plastic wheel covers. Only one little problem. These aren’t replaceable. They are permanently bonded (glued) to the rim underneath and Toyota’s only solution for replacing the cover is to replace the wheel along with it. Also agree about the negative tone….that was definitely my intent for the video. I did make a separate video about all the stuff we love. It’s interesting though….the hate video gets WAY more views. Seems people are more interested in what you don’t like vs what you like. Either way, thanks for watching and taking time to comment.
I really want this as a replacement of my 2015 SE but...the things that you pointed out "would" get under my skin. Yes the hybrid pros are super cool but I want more of my 2015 thinking married to the hybrid idea. My wife loves my van better and 50k out the door..she just says no. Could I convince her? Probably so. But I don't want to fight that battle this year. Note: I only have 53K miles on my car so that kind makes it difficult to give up. 😑
Your 2015 still has a TON of good miles left, so no need to rush. Our 2011 had 160k and it was definitely ready to get traded in. They are already making some changes to the 2022 lineup, and I think they will continue to make some tweaks over the next couple of years. My opinion, wait another year or two and see what’s been improved on this new gen 4 van. Thanks for watching!
Hi JB - Sorry about the delay. Those are some REALLY old Yakima crossbars and mounts that I had. You can basically, any crossbar system that is made to fit "Raised Roof Rails" should work with this van. If I were buying new, I'd look at some cross bars that were a little more aerodynamic. Hope that helps!
What's wrong with plastic wheel covers? If they get scratched you can replace them vs the whole rim. They look fine you can't tell they are plastic. Unless they are rattling or hard to center on the wheel etc, I don't see any downside.
The covers aren’t replaceable. If you trash one, Toyota wants a whole replacement wheel. Bottom line, a $50k vehicle shouldn’t come with plastic wheels.
Rear entertainment is worthless. No blueray player and no microSD like the player in my 2021 Sequoia Platinum. I use a 1 TB microSD chocked full of a week’s worth of videos that I can play from the front, even change folders each house a different kids series of shows
Dude you got me. One would think they would have used the same screen setup for both vehicles. I can’t figure out why they didn’t. I did get HDMI to lightning adapter working so the screen is at least usable now, but now we have to deal with cables and stuff, so it’s not as ideal as an SD slot would have been.
I'm sienna guy. Very disappointed ! 21 sienna 4 cyl.horrible! We all remember 11-13 Sienna 4 cyl. Engine Fiasco!. No rear bumper?! Every rear bumper Kiss - following rear Gate damage! No third row window Vent ! Middle console - moving Space Killer! Stupid van!
They definitely aren't keeping close tabs on what the consumers actually want/need. I will say that despite the 4-cyl being noticeably less power than the 6, the gas mileage is worth it. We are getting 32.5 average now over 5k miles. The old van with the v6 was coming in about 18. So we're close to double on the gas mileage. Out west here, our gas is pushing $4/gallon or higher right now, so getting that mileage is a huge help! Thanks for the feedback!
The engine power is not the problem so much as the fuss/noise it makes in medium to high acceleration events. In Camry Hybrid same engine stays much more hushed when pushed.
Ugh, 1. You have too much crap in your van. 2. That cubby in the back you complain about missing was actually where the 8th seat was stored. 3. That spare tire placement is a HUGE improvement from the old location under the center of the van. 4. Buy a DVD player, much cheaper to replace one of those than one internally installed in the van. Overall your "hates" seem more like minor inconveniences. I've owned a few different year sienna vans, if this is the biggest complaints I think I'll be happy with the new ones.
@@DadDoingStuff yeah, "10 things I hate" got me to click, "Top 10 minor incoveniences" I would have sailed right by. But a lot of these gripes are significant as I'm the market for a van. It looks like they need a few more years to iron out these quirks in this new model.
@@DadDoingStuff Thank you DDS! I was thought about it! But, not fully leather seats, no Ottoman’s, No second row heated seats, No bird eye camera view :(
@@charvigogineni You will need the Platinum trim for all of that. Even the Limited has vinyl in the 3rd row, no bird’s eye camera, and no heated 2nd row.
It’s a total mess when it comes to Apple CarPlay integration. There’s an app they want you to run called “Toyota+Alexa” so you can use Alexa hands free while using Bluetooth. (Doesn’t work with CarPlay naturally) The whole thing just has no integration. Best option is to just have your co-pilot handle all the music from the phone while you focus on driving. Thanks for watching!
I can't speak to towing as I haven't towed anything with this van. In fact I don't have a hitch installed right now. While I believe it's rated for 3500lbs, I can't say I'd like to be driving with a 3500 trailer behind this thing. I did have a hitch and did some minor towing with our old gen 3 Sienna and it did tow fairly decent.
The trim levels are bizarre. We wanted a higher than XLE trim, with 8 passenger AWD and a spare tire. Sorry, you can't have 8 passenger OR AWD with anything other than LE or XLE trim.
You can definitely get AWD in the limited trim. That's what I have. But there are definitely some caveats when you start combining. Like AWD w/ 8 passenger. Not sure you can have both. Spare tire also was only available with specific trim levels and seating configs. But I've seen the platinum in AWD and like I said, we have the AWD limited. But ours is 7-seater. Hope that helps!
I will agree with those rims, can’t believe they would do that on that trim level. And as far as storage in the trunk area, that could be better. But man in the second row……..you have way to much and you did what you needed to do but no car or van could have a place for all that you have. Oh…those small cup holders with the door? For change my man…..or whatever else.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah we get a lot of crap for having so much crap in there….but I ain’t arguing with my wife! Just wish they had legit place for essentials. (Jumper cables, tire chains, road flares, etc)
Thanks for sharing this informative video and your honest owner opinions. Ignore the haters/Toyota fanboy comments! For the money we spend on these cars we have the right to nitpick.
Thanks for the feedback! Very much appreciated!
One benefit of this video is that I'm now significantly more satisfied with my 2010 Toyota Sienna
As a 21 Sienna owner, I have none of the issue that are shown here-not a single one. Everything works, it's comfortable, quiet and frankly, if these are issues, I doubt they are the worst you have seen in life. I wish you well.
Any complaints are subjective. What works for one person won't work for the next. Thx for watching!
100 percent on all of these gripes. We have the exact same van and these shortcomings drive me crazy!
We actually bought a small DVD player and hooked it up to the HDMI port and it kind of works. To store items, we have behind-the-seat storage pockets. As for the emergency road items, we store them with the spare tire like you did.
These types of videos help car manufacturers improve. Thanks for sharing!
Thx for watching dude!
@@DadDoingStuff Toyota should hire you for testing prototypes
The so called "Bridge Console" is the deal breaker for me. It blocks easy access to the back.
A lot of these issues seem more like nit picks. so I'm glad to see there aren't any glaring issues, as I pickup my Platinum next week.
No glaring issues that are deal breakers or even close.
It's the little things that occupied you the most. Ty for detailing these. I shared your pain
Your van has a spare tires option so you won’t get that cut out like the 3rd Generation
Yeah......worth the trade overall. I'd rather have a spare!
Rebecca! Awesome ideas. Definitely going to try some of those. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
Cd ?? Lol do you live in 1993?Please.. so many options to play media. Get with the times. You can go buy a 1993 previa it has a cd player
Thanks for the feedback. My cup holder battle continues. 😂
Thanks a lot for the heads up. I am debating on the sienna or highlander. I think these “don’t like” will be detected for new buyers.
I think between the two, sliding doors is one of the most important considerations. Your kids can’t door ding the Tesla you are parked next to if you have sliding doors.
@@DadDoingStuff haha, how do you know I have a Tesla? which I do by the way, LOL
Great video. Real life usage and conundrums! Thank you!
I can't even tell you how much I needed to see/hear your video! Thank you!!!
Happy to help Travis/Lyly!
Great video bro. Makes a lot sense for regular folks like us
Thank you for the 100% real and honest identification of issues. Typically You Tube reviewers sing the praises of their purchases and gloss over any issues.
Thanks man. We gotta take the bad with the good!
The smaller cup holders fit a medium sized grande perfectly and securely. Not every every cup holder is meant to fit a yeti..lol
The toyota will be more reliable for the vans intened purpose, road tripping !
Great feedback, totally agree. We don’t use the lane assist for pretty much the same reason.
You are likely right. Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks for sharing all the frowns. I totally agree with your assessments. I was considering Toyota van but after watching this I have changed my mind . Thanks for the info on this
Dude. I have 2021 xse awd and i totally hate everything you mentioned. The trunk, the cup holder, so many times i spilled coffee all over.
You get it! Funny how much internet hate I got for even bringing these things up! 🤣🤣
I am only 5"8 and still hitting heads on second row when exiting and also passenger sit, which is very high. I can't believe how low the new 2021 sienna roof is.
I know this is an older comment, it I just had a friend of mine riding shotgun the other day and I did notice the head room in the front seat. Granted he’s 6’4” but his head was touching the ceiling.
definitely keeping my 2017 sienna limited. 36k miles. This was a bad redesign
Gas mileage is amazing (33mpg average over 7k miles). But they definitely missed on some stuff we liked about the gen 3.
I have a 2016 with a 6 speed. Wouldnt trade it for anything.
For the hate #1 you should be aware that batteries take some place . Place like the under spare tire was . So that why this gen loose many cavities here and there
You forgot to mention the rear hatch door it has a big gap, and the paint is peeling off ,before you but it, please check these things
We are in Reno, NV. Fair bit of snow, but we go to Tahoe a lot to ski and definitely deal with plenty of snow up there.
This is a great review. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Glad you found it helpful!
I thought about trading my 2018 sienna in for the new one. I will be keeping it thanks!
Don’t let this totally steer you away from the new van. Overall it’s an improvement, and the gas mileage alone just about makes it worth getting the hybrid.
@@DadDoingStuff my 2009 Highlander is such a gas guzzler but that Japan build quality never gets old
Excellent video. I have a '17 Limited premium with technology package, reclining second row seats, and power third row seats. Think I will keep it around for a while..!
It sounds like it’s got a lot more cool stuff than the new “Limited” trim!
Also, i've got a 22 xle and the rear seats jump up slightly when i hit a bump
mileage has decreased somewhat and the range also but i'm wondering if i need a reset on the odo .
For sure! I ended up cutting the moving blanket down to fit, and it works even better now. Thanks for the feedback!

Maybe its time to get Honda Odyssey because it will address everything you just mentioned in this video. I have the 2022 Odyssey Touring. Great Video review though.
But it won’t address AWD. That is mandatory for us, so it’s Sienna or the Pacifica.
Wouldnt address relibilty of the drive train either. Much more important than cupholders.
Thanks so much for the video. Very well done. How comfortable do you and your wife find the front seats on a trip?
They are actually not bad. This is our first time having chilled seats and during long summer drives they have been really great!
@@DadDoingStuff Thanks, I will check it out. My 2015 van lacks any of the adaptive cruise control for road trips which is very helpful.
Wow wow thank you ! Nearest
Toyota dealer 40 miles

Enjoy your Fiat mini van. Quality vehicle will give you 3000 trouble free miles
You cannot cast any apple devices on the RES wirelessly. Only Android devices can cast to it via Miracast.
Thx for the info, another nuance I wasn’t aware of.
Great video. I really like the wheel on the spare better than the cheap plastic ones on the regular tires!
Amen to that. The spare looks surprisingly nice!
The rear door seal looks like a warranty issue that you should ask the dealer about.
@@hfdewees I did see someone posted a pic of the tri-fold mat in theirs, with the spare tire, in a Sienna FB group. It fits great 👍
@@PeppersGhost55 did they remove the jack / jack cover from the bottom right side of the floor?
Oh…. And we have a sunroof, so you can for sure have a roof rack and sunroof. Whoever said otherwise is full of 💩.
I'm up for my lease Oct 2024. What are you getting next?
That said, I’d still take this over any other minivan on the market right now.
when i first saw that there is a wireless charging feature, my first thought was: garbage.
Yeah it’s a fantastic feature if it works. But the execution was just awful in this case.
I really hope they fix these things, I really want to continue to love these great vehicles
Overall, it’s a great van….but definitely has room for improvement. Thanks for watching!
Didn't ever think about the drive thru with Apple Pay. I'll have to try that with a standard Apple charging cable and see how it works. Thx!
That’s a great idea! Thx!
I'm shocked after I discovered the plastic covers on the wheels. Toyota calls these "Alloy Wheels".
You and me both dude!!
@terminal3 Crocs with a suit….actually saw that in Vegas a few years back. I agree, hubcaps are totally unnecessary!
@@DadDoingStuff I did. Great videos. Thanks!
Great info!!!! Off my list of possible car purchase
I wouldn’t scratch it off the list. If you need a family hauler with great fuel economy, and AWD, it’s still a great choice. They just have a lot of room for improvement in my opinion. Thx for watching!
Good points. Any other can that we can choose?
Any other vans?
I see your floor mats under the 2nd row, is that from the manufacturer or did you buy aftermarket?
Those are all factory. Not sure what trim levels include them, but they came with the Limited trim for sure. Hope that helps.
Oh! Pls also try removing the Jump seat! Soo hard...
Yes, for a “Limited” the trim just doesn’t feel very high end.
"Wireless Charger" is a stupid waste of time. My cell ph is my GPS, how about a cell ph holder on top of the dash?
You just summed up this gen of Sienna, not thought out all the way through. All style no substance.
They are made for store bought waters, sodas, fountain drinks etc
And in regards to the space you should have opted for no spare tire so you have room to store that stuff?
They aren’t bottle holders……but they could’ve been. 🥲 Thx for taking time to watch and comment!
And the bullet proof 6 speed transmission !
Thanks for pointing out the plastic over alloy wheels. FYI after doing some research other people removed the plastic cover and did a minor finish work and had black alloy wheels. You can also paint it another color.
Thanks for the info. I’m planning to do just that. And if I TOTALLY screw up the wheels in the process, I’ll just get some aftermarket ones. Cheers!
Spare tire rim looks nicer than the other 4.
SO TRUE!
The wheels are plastic with aluminum wrapped around it.
Technically they are aluminum wheels with plastic on the outside.
I would wait until 2024 where there is supposed to be a mid-cycle refresh.
Where have you purchased your roof rails?
Hi JB - Sorry about the delay. Those are some REALLY old Yakima crossbars and mounts that I had. You can basically, any crossbar system that is made to fit "Raised Roof Rails" should work with this van. If I were buying new, I'd look at some cross bars that were a little more aerodynamic. Hope that helps!
Great Vid. I agree with you on the rims. Really disappointing!
I use a 1 TB microSD chocked full of a week’s worth of videos that I can play from the front, even change folders each house a different kids series of shows
Why didn’t they just use the same one as our Sequoia Platinum?????
Dude you got me. One would think they would have used the same screen setup for both vehicles. I can’t figure out why they didn’t. I did get HDMI to lightning adapter working so the screen is at least usable now, but now we have to deal with cables and stuff, so it’s not as ideal as an SD slot would have been.
you don't need dvd or bluray disc any more, they should put a sd card slot , they missed that
I'm sienna guy.
Yes but "Top 10 Minor Inconveniences" doesn't have the same ring to it. 😉
@@DadDoingStuff yeah, "10 things I hate" got me to click, "Top 10 minor incoveniences" I would have sailed right by. But a lot of these gripes are significant as I'm the market for a van. It looks like they need a few more years to iron out these quirks in this new model.
Which is the best trim for 2022 sienna?
I would look at the 2022 Woodland edition. It looks sweet, and the cement gray color is badass.
You just reminded me to cancel my Amazon music subscription. Thanks
Still far superior than any mini vans in the market. Cup holders should be small to help with our obese society!!!
Can’t argue with that.
What's wrong with drinking water?

What’s with the goofs hating on the guys video. ?? If non of you have this problem, move on
Thanks man! Appreciate the comment!
@@DadDoingStuff no problem, I’m in the hunt for a minivan and appreciate your video. Take care
what about the hybrid engine and its lack of towing power ?
I heard 2023 you have a choice with platinum
Great reviews
Thanks!!!
