You can make this setup much more efficient by using a 12v space heater/heated blanket in addition to the car heater. Currently you have to wait for engine/coolant to heat with each idle period during which it could be generating plenty of juice to be running accessory heaters. Hybrid system will start the engine whether it's too cold or the battery needs charging.

The Sienna's climate control rocks! I tracked idling gas consumption last night, and Justin's estimate seems plausible. Here’s what I got: I idled for 15 hours (first & last 30 mins at 75°F, the rest ~57°F), with outside temps averaging ~20°F (low of 16°F) and little wind. I used 1.04 gallons, or ~1.66 gal/day, assuming 25 mpg as the average driving mileage (though I usually get >28.5 mpg in this MN winter weather). I set my electric blanket on low and it may have reduced idling since it runs on batteries, which stayed at 100% full. I’ll keep tracking it for a while with different parameters for more accurate estimates and averages.
12/16/24: Used 1.2 gallons (~$3.25) for heating from 6 PM (12/15) to 6 AM (12/16). Lows: 28°F; Avg: ~32°F; little wind. Spent an hour with a friend at 72°F; thermostat set to 61°F overnight. Electric blanket on high seems to reduce idling slightly. 12/17/24: Used 1.32 gallons (~$3.56) from 8:10 PM to 6:10 AM (12/17/24). Lows reached 24°F, average temp ~27°F, with 8 mph winds and gusts up to 21 mph. Thermostat set to 61°F. Wind gusts appear to increase idling.
One question that I dont think was addressed is: how many minutes approximately did the engine run for during the test. Does the Sienna generate heat from resistance like an electic baseboard heater or does it have some form of heat pump that works with refrigerant. Great video BTW.
I suspect that the actual cost is higher. I trust the fuel gauge more than the car’s calculation/guesstimate of mpg. I also don’t think you can extrapolate that it equals gas used to power the heater whilst the car is stationary. The fuel gauge says that used a quarter tank of fuel, which in a Sienna is ore than 1.55 gallons.Google says a 2021 Sienna has a gas tank of 18 gallons, so a quarter tank is 4.5 gallons, making the actual cost closer to $13.50; which is still a deal 😊
I love the toyota hybrids, I have a 2020 Rav4 and during covid it was so nice to be able to hang out in my vehicle on long trips with the heat/AC running without having to continuously idle the motor. It is also nice that the battery charging mode puts some load on the motor when it is running making the engine heat up fast as well as converting what would, in a normal vehicle, be almost no load idle time to light engine load. Given the length of time I have had work vehicles idle at job sites without major issue I am confident that while not great for the engine this setup is probably not going to cause any real issues as long as proper maintenance is done.
A Sienna has an 18 gallon tank. If this only used 1.5 gallons, the gauge should have shown a lot less of a difference. It went from about 80% to about 60%, amounting to about a 3.6 gallon drop. I'm wondering if the range estimator takes a few other things into account, or if the gauge exaggerates the gallons in the middle. In any case, have fun and explore as much as you can!
I don't think I have ever added more than 17 gallons to my tank despite being on or below E. So, I think the gauge only accounts for probably 16 gallons with 2 gallons in reserve.
the sienna is getting long in the tooth, i am hoping when ever they decide to refresh they lean into more camping options when they finally do a re design. I used to have an 09 prius and used to love camping in it.
You know if you set it to Auto and 72 it will hold the temp just like a thermostat in your house. Why don’t people use that? Also your temperature is reading in Fahrenheit and your phone is reading Celsius.
Here in Norway the gasoline is more expensive so it would be around $10. Can you set the car to only charge the battery when it reaches a certain % or something?
Wow nice video I live in a Chrysler 2022 Pacific in Arizona and I’m liking the fact that you can use the heat all night. What about ac ? If so I’m sold on the new hybrid. I paid for my vehicle cash so it can be a pretty big down payment on-the 2025 Toyota sienna o I forgot I. Live in the van in Arizona
hello Justin, thank you for your video. I also have a hybrid sienna and like to van camp as well. do you know if there's a way to keep the climate control on with hybrid system on AND keep the outer lights such as taillight and headlight completely off? thank you!
so... what is your normal MPG when driving at interstate speeds in the western US? A deer just wrecked our 2011. hoping to get a 2025 tomorrow. Excited about the hybrid, but not about the loss of power that the 6 cylinder gave us. We mostly go 21mpg driving 80 with a space case and bicycles.
Congratulations on the new car and sorry to hear about the accident, hope y'all are fine. Siennas should do about 30 mpg going 80 mph on the highway. If you go slower at about 65-70, you easily get north of 35 mpg, closer to 40 in ideal conditions. I believe the extreme weather and all the stuff he has mounted to the roof (increasing drag and reducing highway efficiency) caused his mpg to be lower.
How do you deal with carbon monoxide and the possibility of contamination due to change of external air flow and poisoned air coming in the car in the dead of night?
If it is a conventional gas vehicle, that would be a serious problem. But since it is a hybrid vehicle, the engine is on and off cycling and I am assuming that "on period" is way shorter than a "off period" So, carbon mono oxide can be seeped in but concentration will not be that harmful. It is just based on my thoughts. However I think it is worth to have Carbonmonooxide alaram 😊
Curious about your bed set up. I built one but is based on the seats being folded forward and then the bed on top of that, but then we can’t sit up in our beds
How come other carmakers don't offer this climate control feature in their hybrids? I think Hyundai hybrids will shut off after two hours while using AC or heat off the battery.
3/4 of a tank is only good for 238 miles?? I drive a 1999 528iT that 380 miles on 3/4 of a tank and almost 500 miles on full. Very quiet, torquey motor. Watching this video makes me miss my Mazda MPV.

Thank you for making this video!
Another good thing is running it all night will keep your battery charged and windows clear of condensation.
A whole lot cheaper than a hotel room!
I'm a Pirates fan but had no idea Paul Skenes lived in a van!
Very informative
Glad to hear
HEST foamy sleeping pad I bought a double folded it in half fit perfectly from REI.
You should look into getting a hybrid Pacifica Chrysler you can run it on full electric all night
Love the hybrid van but hate that huge front center console.
I wish I could remove it, so I could walk between the front and rear.
Wow this is very helpful. Hope you'll do another video when stopping by some desert. I'll expect it will cost more than cold enviroment.
I will get my new 2025 sienna on next Saturday and will try to sleep in it over the cold night of Canada.😂
You know if you set it to Auto and 72 it will hold the temp just like a thermostat in your house. Why don’t people use that? Also your temperature is reading in Fahrenheit and your phone is reading Celsius.
Just stumbled on this channel. Hitting subscribe
Do one in the summer with the ac on.
Will do
Yep, my Prius just lost 15 mpg this first winter in cold climate. :(
很有用,3年前我也有一辆SINEENA
I ❤ my Sienna
We love ours, but frustrating that the middle row seats don't come out easily.
Toyota doing Toyota things
Do you remember how many times did the van turn on and off? Is it noticeable when it turns on, like causing sleep disturbances?
I will try to do a video in the future doing some testing to see the frequency. I got used to the turning on and off so it’s not an issue for me
is there CARBON MONOXIDE buildup risk if parked station for a long time? maybe consider getting a portable detector/alarm for us in these situation?
I would have two of them for redundancy
hello Justin, thank you for your video.
But since it is a hybrid vehicle, the engine is on and off cycling and I am assuming that "on period" is way shorter than a "off period"
So, carbon mono oxide can be seeped in but concentration will not be that harmful.
It is just based on my thoughts.
However I think it is worth to have Carbonmonooxide alaram 😊
Curious about your bed set up. I built one but is based on the seats being folded forward and then the bed on top of that, but then we can’t sit up in our beds
Check out my channel for a video on my bed. I have a video about it
Did you get a Continental breakfast?
How come other carmakers don't offer this climate control feature in their hybrids? I think Hyundai hybrids will shut off after two hours while using AC or heat off the battery.
3/4 of a tank is only good for 238 miles?? I drive a 1999 528iT that 380 miles on 3/4 of a tank and almost 500 miles on full. Very quiet, torquey motor. Watching this video makes me miss my Mazda MPV.
Since you have the good sleeping bag shoulda kept it on at 60 degrees or even 58.
Hi, where did you purchase the side window shades? It looks like the left driver side is a WeatherTech product.
its good for emergency but if your doing it everyday your putting stress on lots of components. Especially the muffler heat exchanger.
I found some source said the Gasoline Particulate Filter will damaged quickly when you Idle for extended periods, especially during winter.
Got it, I did no research and just hoped for the best. The thing is this is a hybrid so it only idles for probably 5 minutes max each cycle. Did you lookup standard gasoline engines?
@@JustinTheVan gas engine doesn't have particulate filter. There is a catalytic converter, and it's attached to the exhaust manifold so it's not going to be affected by the temperature outside
These vans are made for this…off grid camping a few days at a time. THATS why they have built in converters / inverters to help u keep everything charged up and running. THEY ARE NOT a typical gas engine with same issues. The electric does the heavy lifting and only uses Gas when power is needed or to charge the Electric batteries. I LOVE my VanLife in my Sienna. Perfect for 1 person.
@@JustinTheVan I find this because they are hot topic when someone recommend Sienna in social media in Asian market. but you are the guy practice and prove it's not a issue at all. Could you share more data about this, like total night/hours you sleep in your Sienna with AC running. by the way, did you closed all the window when sleeping?
@@RR-ej6cd True, they are made for camping, but they don't recommend to run you AC all night. BTW, I don't have converters because I bought a XLE😂
Graceful Bed setup. 3rd Row Bench seat folds down to make a Bed with 2nd Row seats removed?
I can't think of many places where such a test proves the point. Livingston is known for high winds associated with the Bozeman Pass, and I doubt that would have made much of a difference as well.
Hi amigo. Would this work with a/c too? Thanks
Yes it does
Can you keep it at 65f in heat over 100 degrees high humidity outside?
So you had no issues removing the second row seats completely? I had read that would activate an airbag warning light…
There a resistor kit that is available or you can do it yourself, it’s a 2.2 ohms resistor
Why engine on the coldest after it was working all night
Because it’s a hybrid, engine was not always running overnight
Almost 24 mpg is not horrible at all for a van. That is car mileage. How many mpg do you expect in a van?
It's pretty bad for a hybrid. I was getting mid/high 20's in my 2000 Odyssey, no hybrid.
how did you turn off the air bag light with the center seats out.
Brad Ling makes an emulator. Just Google his name. It’s brads hacks. I can’t give any more info otherwise my comment is deleted. It’s an awesome device that allows Sienna owners to remove their middle seats.
You can use a resistor in place of the seat hookup. There are TH-cam videos on this.
I'm an old timer. What about the battery? Doesn't idling a car without driving it drain the battery? Or maybe cars have changed?
Your thermostat is faulty. Or your coolant temp sensor.
Dude, how do you permanently disable the message “keep van on or shut it off” after 20 minutes “ beeping after locking doors before going to sleep?
You push button that says off. Very easy.
Hii!! Super cool! Or warm lol! How would you say AWD compares to 4WD?
What years of the sienna have this option?
2021+
I use a trekking pole to lock in lock doors
Useful info .. just a bit slow delivery .. I like faster videos
Consider a gas Webasto heater tied into the coolant loop. Will drastically reduce fuel consumption, not to mention engine wear.
Thanks
Does anyone know if it works the same in a Chrysler Pacifica hybrid? I haven’t seen anyone talk about it.
I am not sure. Someone should do a test with it for sure.
Pacifica hybrid turns off automatically after 30 minutes if you don't shift into drive. There are various workarounds online, however.
What is the link to the lights?
How did you remain ventilated? Were all the windows completely closed? I know it’s not an issue for fumes but for the sake of good air quality, what did you do? Ty
All the windows were shut. The car’s heat/air conditioning system has an air filter underneath the seat that you’re supposed to replace every once in a while. But just like when you’re driving you have clean air to breath with it in idle
@@JustinTheVan cool. Ty
And clearly it works well if there was no condensation on the inside after a whole night of breathing into it.
Where is the best spot to stay overnight? I can see hotel one of them, anyother?
is it dangerous to sleep in the van? are there carbon dioxide inside the car if keep running? new to this - is this a concern?
No not with hybrid
I had an idea to rig up my heating system to bypass the engine and heat the water coolant with a propane hot water heater and a pump . Then only the fan running will keep the car warm. 73
@@ronb6182that sounds clever
@@bdmenne yeah but I know someone will knock down this idea because if the fumes from the hot water heater but it's minimal and the heater could be placed outside away from the vehicle. Some heaters are almost 100 percent efficient. I had one in my laundry room. 73
@@ronb6182 I can't wait you share a video for this :)
Thanks for sharing this! Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm/monitor?
I do not. I should get one
would you recommend the Webasto diesel heater or not worth it ?
Very interesting... How did you get fresh air?
Just the standard engine’s air filtering. Just leave the car running
@@JustinTheVan Thanks for this answer. The Sienna is at the top of my list now. Your video pushed it even higher.
nice my only concern is when you want to go to the restroom at night
I have a video about… my toilet bucket
Orange juice bottle.
could you run things off of the hybrid battery rather than the engine? 70 degrees with a 0 degree bag sounds kind of warm.
Yeah the sleeping bag is overkill but it was my only bedding at the time.
You can’t choose whether things run off the battery or the engine. The engine just goes on and off as it needs to
Yea humans sleep best when it's chilly like 60 degrees ... I know sometimes when it's cold out it a little warmer does feel better though
Is your van all-wheel drive and if so what tires are you running
Amazing. What about going to the restroom at night? Do you have an inside solution or outside?
I have an emergency toilet for #2 called luggable loo but for #1 I just use a big plastic bottle from like a coffee jug or milk jug
