  • Watch as a new Dodge ignition lock is re-keyed to match the existing key. If you have a ignition lock that fails to turn, this video will help you fix it for less than $25, using Strattec kit 703719. For step by step text and still pictures of this procedure see; www.originalmechanic.com/2015/...

    I Never saw the kit, but I bought a new lock from Advanced Auto Parts and started searching UTube for help.
    84 year old former locksmith here. I had to laugh at myself. We were always taught to disparage the layman's "tumblers". "There ain't nothing tumbling in there, son. Those are wafers, pins et. al."
    I wasted a lot of time searching until I got smart and tried tumblers LOL!
    great video my friend. Very good narration also. I guess you taught this old dog a new trick, and saved my beloved Cherokee Sport a 300 dollar trip to the deealer.
    Many thanks.

Thank you because I was going to take my cylinder to a Locksmith who was going to charge me $60!!! Now I can do it myself!!! LOL... LOL... Thank you for taking the time to make this video!!

    This was my Jeep's issue! Thank you for taking the time to make this - it saved me a bunch of time. I had to watch another video to figure out how to get the inner part of the ignition switch out of the outer cylinder though. :) But a big +1 overall! Thank you.

    Thank you very much for the visual! Used the same kit to build new cylinder! But only after a hammer blow to the key that was stuck in the ignition (it certainly moved then)

      I had to smack the actual ignition with a hammer to get it to turn

    Thank you for this great video. I have a 2004 dodge caravan and the key would not move unless I loosened up the tumbler/spring or sidebar with a few small hammer taps at the key entry site. I took the old cylinder out and rekeyed it like you showed us in the video. I slid the key mechanism back into the housing but the device will not rotate to the accessory position. It will only move to the off / on positions. I tried holding down the pin and moving the cylinder counter clockwise but it wont move. Any idea what may be happening?

    It's was great watching the cylinder pulled out but I didn't get how to even get that huge piece out of the door. I'm trying to understand but I heard talking and didn't see any movement in half the video. I'd really love to watch a video where I can see more of what's going on.

    hey so I tried pushing the pin down to take out the cylinder core, there's actually 2 release pins. I push the one down (tried both at once but it's very hard w. one person) & it's not coming out. any suggestions? plz reply asap if possible. awesome vid! ty

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never done one with two pins. Sounds like an awkward setup. I would probably try to stick something in there to hold the second pin. Use some small thing, to release the tension on the second pin while doing the other one by hand as usual. Thanks for watching the video and good luck with your problem!

    • @queerdeer12
      @queerdeer12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a little late but for anyone's future reference, you only need to do the one pin. Have yours setup and facing the same way as his. Once you have that single pin presses, twist it some more and it should come out. I literally just did mine

    Do you only need to reset the tumblers if you want to use the old key?
    Are the cylinders sold with the tumblers already in the cylinder?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As explained in the video, yes you do need to change the tumblers to match the ones in the old cylinder. They are included in the kit and have to be installed in the correct position in the cylinder.

      @LarsonChristopher ปีที่แล้ว

      Should work as long as they are not damaged. Would be wise to add some grease as he did in this video. Replacing the springs would make sense in that situation - but the old ones could have a lot of life left in them.

    • @JAYJAYJAY53
      @JAYJAYJAY53 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LarsonChristopher although I used a new kit what I noticed was that it was the cylinder itself that was really worn out and had developed excessive play .
