NOTE: if you do this procedure and you can’t get your new ignition to pop right in you have to take a big screwdriver put it in the hole and rotate the ignition square all the way back, after I did this my new ignition slid right and and worked great!! Thanks so much, Greg

I appreciate you also showing how to replace everything step by step as you put it all back together. Lots of times people just say "reverse procedure to finish it." You actually did it. 👍🏻

One thing I'd like to add that happened to me while I was replacing the switch was ,When I took the switch out and went to put the new one in. Inside the ignition itself, moved in there. so the new key switch wouldn't go back in until I put a flathead in there and turned it back the match the key cylinder ,Then it fell right in . Thanks for posting

I didnt want to give up my key and have to use a diffrent one for doors and ignition. Took out the lock cylinder like he did, got a very fine file. In my case it wasnt those two little pins causing my problem it was a sharp edge that had developed and it was catching. Rounded a few edges and bingo!! It is very easy to start these trucks without a key i discovered..

The video was great. I have a 1999 Silverado and my ignition lock cylinder needed replacing. I was nervous to tackle it at first, but with the video you created made it a breeze, once I purchase the right tools. The only thing that I would add is: When inserting the new cylinder, you may need to use a big flathead screwdriver to insert into the core space to turn the switch just a little to line it up to receive the new ignition. cylinder. I had to figure that out to get the cylinder to seat properly. When I put everything back together, it works like new! Thanks.... Oh yeah I had the dealer to set the cylinder to match my existing keys.

Just a couple different steps on mine. It didn’t have bolts holding column plastic together so all I had to do was use a small flat screw driver to start separation of plastics. Carefully
Oh also I had to hold key all the way forward in start position to be able to push in release button to pull out old lock cylinder.
    Thanks again 👍

But I couldn't get the top housing off the steering column of our 2003 Chevy S10 until I saw you identify the problem bolt, AND suggest using a 4 mm socket wrench to get it off. (Watched 3 other videos before yours, and they suggested removing the steering wheel and airbag to get at it. No!) You saved me tons of time and money!

Just had mine all appart because mine was stuck in the crank position. That little gold plate under his tool on the tumbler at 3:57 was popped out. The corners of it are stamped into the casting of the aluminum tumbler. It looks like it holds the springs in the lock. I tapped the spots back down in the corners to stamp it back in place and now it works again. It's very soft aluminum. Mine does do the same thing this guys did and I also thought it was the pins catching on those ramps but I can hold them both IN and it still catches. I think its the little black block on the side of the tumbler that sticks out just a fuzz when the key is out but then goes in when the key is in. I believe it's what prevents you from turning the tumbler without the key in. I don't think it's coming out of the notch where it rides in the female part where it goes into the column. It seems a little cockeyed. I believe that's what catches and not the pins.

Be sure and try a factory key first. I had called the locksmith and told them I was gonna try key first. I had given my wife a key to my truck when I bought it 9 years ago and lucky for me she still had it and boom! It started right up!!!! Basics first :)

I decided to tear into it this week. Apparently the previous owner had struggled with the problem. To begin with, getting the covers off the steering column was a snap because he didn't bother to put the retaining screws back in. With only a moment's struggle, I was able to extract the old cylinder, to discover that it had been liberally slathered with grease. That would explain why everything worked fine when I bought the truck, but started going downhill soon after. I popped in the new cylinder without any issues and replaced the covers. The whole process took only a few minutes. Thanks again for posting your video!

The ignition not turning has absolutely nothing to do with the spring pin as you referred to. It has to do with worn wafers in the lock that are not matching up with your key. All you would have to do is go to a locksmith and get him or her to replace the wafers and your lock is good as new. And you wouldn’t have two keys. You could’ve had the new lock rekeyed to match your old key so everything is on one key but then again you spent money on a new lock that was not necessary. That groove as you called it you said wore out does not happen. Always a good idea to ask a pro. You save money and you don’t misinform people with this nonsense.

So, my ignition switch would NOT move, NO way to rotate to the start position to remove/replace. I pried the plastic off the switch and located the keyway that pops up to lock the cylinder. The springs can fail and the keyway does not disengage from the housing. It's basically right where the arrow on the plastic is. I used a die grinder to cut off the shoulder of the cylinder right where that keyway is (careful not to damage anything else). Put the key all the way into the switch. Then, I took a baby (very small) flathead screwdriver and pushed the keyway down (back into the cylinder slot), tapping the screwdriver in as far as I could. Had to help turn the cylinder with some channel locks, but I got the cylinder to rotate clockwise to that start position and I could then pull it out. New one popped right in.

1996 Chev. C-1500: This works great but the fact is you need the ignition to go forward in order to even remove the core/barrel. I cannot turn the key at all. So it refuses to let me remove the barrel cylinder and replace it. Both keys refuse to work on this ignition. May need to call a specialist.

Well, great video. I was able to get thru all the steps until the part where the key has to be turned on in order to release the lock cylinder. But that's my problem! The key won't turn. Very frustrating

Mine won’t even turn to the second position at ALL. So I can’t remove the cylinder. Any advice?

    • @jasontodd6930
      @jasontodd6930 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

It will turn you just gotta play with it. I have to fiddle with mine for 30 minutes sometimes before it finally turns. If all else fails you can tap it out with a screwdriver and turn it since you’re putting a new one in it anyways.

Its not two small pins you talking about in the video, its your key wore out or inside cylinder,I did have the same problem and replaced with new cylinder,if you look at your old cylinder and when you put key in,small plate on the side supposed to slide inside to make a free turn

That works if you can turn the key, but I can’t turn my key as state in the title, so this video is more or less useless for me others expecting to see you fix a cylinder lock that won’t turn.

My 1995 Chevy S10 has the same problem with the ignition switch not turning sometimes. I just jiggle it a little and it works. But I like to keep it that way so that my girlfriend can't drive it. I don't want anyone else driving my old truck but me.

I used a cheap lock pick from harbor freight an wriggle it into barrel through a tiny hole made special for this problem whilst wriggling key at the same time ,key will then pop into on position 😅
