a little bit of everything

  • I keep a running notes app on my phone of thoughts that float into my head that I quickly convince myself aren’t important or interesting enough to say out loud. Some questions, I’m usually just too embarrassed to ask or admit. Instead of waiting for the perfect time to say any of these, I’m just going to say all of them in one single video. Now these ridiculous reflections get to live somewhere other than in my head and on my phone.
    Just keep hitting singles.
    Love you! ♥

    3:22 I recently read that this is kind of a common thing among neurodivergent folks. We don't do it as a "it's all about me" thing but because we're trying to relate to people. Like "oh that thing happened to you? Well this similar thing happened to me. I understand and can relate to you about this"

    • @elyse_myers
      @elyse_myers  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +96

      From that point on, I made it my life’s mission to never make a conversation about me ever again and instead it accidentally transitioned into me awkwardly interviewing the person I’m meeting/talking to. Like non-stop question after question after question because I’m so terrified to talk about myself and cause someone to think I’m self-absorbed.
      Now as an adult, married to a neuro-typical person, I’m learning there is a very normal and natural way to share experiences from your own life that relate to what the person in front of you just said without it turning into a monologue. (I have no clue how to do this, but I *do know* now that it’s possible by watching my husband talk to people!)

      @@elyse_myers My problem is that I'm trying so hard to interact like a regular human that I don't catch myself in the moment when I do the "you just told me a story, so now I'm going to talk about myself in order to show you that I relate". It's not until afterwards when I'm anxiously replaying the conversation over and over that the fear of seeming self absorbed kicks in. Of course by then there's nothing that can be done... except to continue over analyzing the interaction lol.
      Perhaps Jonas can start a segment where he teaches us basic social skills 😂

      @@elyse_myersI think it's a small talk thing, socially skilled NT people weave their anecdotes into a conversation using small talk as glue, whereas ND people like us tend to just jump straight from their story to ours without what is effectively a pause for the NT person to keep up.

      I worked in a fabric store, and we 100% see colors different from each other. And it's not just my observation, there's been studies. Telling colors apart is a literal learned skill. Mind: Blown.

      @@cloudsnthere are different shades of every color and there are shades inside other colors. This is why you have a 'gray blue' so if you would put a blue next to it then it would pull more blue out of the color and same with gray next to it. But, every shade has undertones so you put a yellow next to the color and you can really see the difference. This is why you can't just say you want a white wall in design. 🤗

    You are amazing. Truly.
    I find such comfort, humor and relatability in your long form content.
    I am either saying (out loud) “Same. Right! I know!” Or laughing. (Or tearing up.)
    You are such an incredible person.
    This makes me realize that there MUST be more people out there in the world just as quirky, curious, confused and unsure about life as I feel on the reg.
    And others that also notice the little things in life.
    ❤ Thank you for being you and for sharing yourself with us.

    People do see colours differently 🙂 Cone cells or cones are photoreceptor cells in the retinas of vertebrates' eyes. They respond differently to light of different wavelengths, and the combination of their responses is responsible for color vision. Depending how many you have will vary what different shades you can see! 😃❤

    The color thing!!!!! I think about that all the time. It's so true... Like is the blue I see the same blue you see?? Does this really specific magenta color look exactly the same to you as it does to me??? How would we even find out??? Words wouldn't be sufficient enough because those are limited, and that would be hard to use words even, because if you try to describe it using another item/color, what if they don't see THAT color the same either??? I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thinks about this 😂

      It's a common concept in the philosophy of perception and conscious experience. Another freaky one is the concept of a philosophical zombie - the idea that you actually have no way of telling if someone you're talking to is conscious, you just assume they are because you are and they're also humans. Mostly intended as an interesting thought experiment to probe the concept of human consciousness but occasionally used by awful people to dehumanise others (see the whole "NPC" rhetoric that's taken off in recent years)

I was super nervous because they were so different, and kids got bullied with glasses also, but everywhere I went people loved them. Nobody asked to try them! So maybe that's the key, pick something super unique that they're too distracted to ask about trying them on bahaha

    Zombie Apocalypse is not (supposed to be) an actual fear of zombies (I mean I guess for some?) but it's a way of saying "Are you prepared for a disaster" and the idea being if you were prepared to survive a zombie apocalypse you'd be prepared for things like actual likely disasters because you're prepared to live without power, without grocery stores, without city water, etc. But it's hard to get people to care about those actual things because they weirdly feel less likely. But if you make it a "fun" exercise, like zombies, then people are actually more likely to prepare actual emergency supplies.

    • @cloudsn
      @cloudsn 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      Is that how other people think of the zombie apocalypse? Because I think of how I'd survive it as almost a stress response. When I'm super anxious I'll think of what would happen if zombies attacked right now. Like, "I don't have to worry about my job or making money or paying rent. all I have to do is survive the living dead. easy." It calms me down. Maybe I'm just very strange.

      Well without power or grocery store, it won't take long for your neighbors to be so hungry that they'll do anything to try to feed their own families. They'll be acting like zombies.
      They'll try to steal your food, if you grow a garden they will take from there, if you have chickens they'll steal the eggs or eat the chicken
      People won't be able to get their medication, so that alone will make people act differently. And no heating or cooling.
      How will you cook your food?
      Prep with canned food, or freeze dried. Things that are shelf stable. You can get ghee instead of butter. Evaporated milk in a can, etc
      Stuff you can eat right out of the can might be better. Without heat.

    I don't understand property taxes either! I live in Oklahoma and every year I have to pay property taxes on my appliances. Like my microwave, my washer and dryer, my refrigerator etc! Why!! I already bought them, I paid taxes on them when I bought them, so why do I still have to pay taxes on them!? Truthfully, I don't own a washer and dryer, nor a cook stove just so I don't have to pay taxes on them every year! Instead, I take what the taxes would've been and put that money into savings & some day I'm going to buy the oldest/cheapest washer and dryer from the 80's-90's so the taxes will be unbelievably cheap! But I'll forever just use a hot plate and my wood stove in the winter to cook! I probably won't buy a dryer bec in the summer I use my clothesline & in the winter I hang them inside to dry

    Had to pause the video to inform you. As far as my own fascination with zombie apocalypse, I figured out this has to do with my living with severe mental illnesses my entire life while everyone around me invalidated me and told me I was fine. Every single day since childhood was torture for this reason, and the idea that a zombie could be around every corner fit my internal emotional experience and validated me more than my real life. This theory was validated by progressing in my trauma work, and now that I have a supportive home, mental health treatment, and almost no more suicidality, my fascination with zombie apocalypse has dwindled.
