I landed on a multiclass Shadow Monk 12/Archfey Warlock 8, using the blind fighging style in tandem with pass without trace works in the early levels, when the multiclass takes effect we support it with fey teleportation, misty escape, shadow step and relentless hex.
He's flavored as a "shadowdancer" and whwnever he attacks he looks like he's dancing, weaving shadow magic to assist him.

Honestly, if I was gonna build a monk character this is how I'd do it except I would multiclass into ranger to get access to a bunch of their stuff which not only gives the monk a much needed damage buff, but also gives them additional proficiencies and tools which benefit the pre-existing playstyle.

A Monk (Shadow) / Ranger (Gloomstalker) Build...

I've always wanted to do a "Nightcrawler build" swashbuckler rogue/draconic sorcerer and only take teleport, movement, and the weapon spells (booming blade, etc) the appearance isn't as important as the playstyle. Take variant or custom lineage for fey touched and 1st level teleportation. Start Rogue and then Sorcerer (focus on defense and movement) then back to Rogue for cunning action and then swashbuckler. I'm not sure of the level progression but eventually I would like at least 3 levels of rogue and 9 levels of sorcerer for Far Step. Along the way grab the teleportation spells and use your sorcery points mostly for more slots. Quicken spell and extend spell (some 'ports have a range that can be doubled) metamagics. Teleport, attack, move away. Or vice versa. Use teleports to engage multiple opponents during the fight. Stay out of melee. Use booming blade to set up opponents by teleporting just out of reach or green flame to hit two guys next to each other. With maxed Dex and perma-magic armor, your AC is good but not great. Keep moving. Other movement spells include spider climb, expeditious retreat, haste, etc. Maybe get invisibility too, for the extra stealth, melting into the shadows. That's it. Because if your spell selection, you don't need to max Cha (14-16 should be sufficient). Max out Dex and focus on swordplay. At higher levels, stay with rogue or switch to battlemaster fighter. Higher sorcerer levels are less useful. True there's teleport and gate, but since you are limited to 5th level slots for your font of magic ability, going higher means you have slots you can't convert, spells you can't upcast, and spells that don't improve your playstyle. Horizon Walker and Shadow Monk were considered but rejected because rangers don't get enough spell slots to teleport every round and shadow monk is too situational, needed shadows and such. I didn't go shadow sorcerer because of the hound. Like the accursed spector of hex blade, it doesn't fit with most of my builds, so I never go past 5 in hexblade warlock. And the hound is better for spellcasting, not hit and run tactics. That's it.

That’s a really creative build. Very thematic and flavorful!

One of my biggest problems with the monk is the restrictions on bonus action attacks because they have to be unarmed strikes where I would love to make them ranged or melee weapon attacks.

  • @duanebradway1627

I like this build. I would possibly opt for Tri-Kreen as the race just to add the natural camouflage and AC.

I was thinking of multiclassing it with Twilight domain cleric. They fit in my mind- wisdom, portable darkness, and you get more movement (flying)

One thing I think would be a fun idea is do a 3 level dip into fighter to pick up whatever weapon/armor proficiency you want pick up champion subclass that way you can also fish for crits while being stealthy as a shadow monk.

There is no automatic failure on ability checks. Your example of rolling a 1 for stealth would be a 17, still pretty good

I really love the idea of Monks. I love the idea that a lone, unarmored monk can take down a fully armored warrior with nothing but their body as a weapon. The problem is, Monks really struggle in combat. They lack the sustainability of Fighters, they lack the mobility and damage of Rogues. The only role a Monk plays in combat beyond some limited damage is Disruptor. I can POTENTIALLY stun-lock a target and take one enemy out of the fight for a little while. That’s it. It really breaks the immersion that what I see in my head doesn’t even come close to the mechanics in game. Like, yes, you can POTENTIALLY make a skill-MONKey, but you probably need a level or two of Rogue to pull that off, so why not be a Rogue? Or an Artificer? Or a Bard?
That being said, I do love this Shadow-Ninja build, so I may make my own version and give it a shot at some point. I do have a One Shot that I’ll be playing in coming up…

Nat 1 on a skill check is not an automatic failure unless you are basing it off a house rule

    Love the battle-axe name.
If one is willing to sacrifice 2 ASIs for 2 Feats it is possible to give the Way Of The Shadow Monk huge advantages. Feat 1 is Eldritch Adept: Devil Sight. Darkness becomes the Monk's friend. Feat 2 is Alert. Let's face it, this Feat will help any Monk build. Unfortunately, ASIs and improving Wisdom and Dexterity should take precedence for any Monk build. But, hey. D&D should be about having fun, so feel free to build any character in any way that is allowed at your table.

Doing this build with a fey Goblin war domain cleric multiclass and I just know I' m going to love it. I've multiclassed at level 2, swapped the earlier access to Ki for spells like detect magic. We have just started Key from the Golden Vault and the spells will be handy. Planning on taking the next 5 levels in Shadow Monk, then I am unsure the mix of levels. I think its going to work really well. War priest will give me access to a bonus action weapon attack 3 times per long rest at level 2. I love the idea of Monks but they usually need a thoughtful multiclass to really be fun to play. A zealot/devout Zen ninja should be fun 😊

With the Tasha's stuff you _kind of_ can.
You can spend a ki point to improve your to-hit, which then lets you bonus action attack with a monk weapon, as you've used a ki point.
(Focused aim + Ki fueled attack)

Okay, just gonna put it out there: Ranger. Ranger is 1) A Dex and Wisdom based class. 2) Gets Pass Without Trace. 3) Gets MORE SKILLS than a Monk to start out. I love the idea of a Shadow Monk Infiltrator build, but they aren’t the only class that fits that description. Just something that irked me. Sincerely a Gloomstalker Ranger player.

I used to roll a shadow Monk with three levels in rogue for tier one assassin abilities who was also my first evil character I enjoyed the mechanics but when I got to know the character from a role-playing perspective he was such a prick and I ended up retiring him after I stabbed another party member

Hey, remember my homebrewed monster suggestion comment? There are two other creatures I forgot to mention in it. Sea Chimera and Zenithal Chimera. two which are from "Elder Chimeras - Three Alternative Chimeras" compilation posted by u/DeckofJokersGames.
Chimera and their variants are some of my favorite D&D monsters you know, and idea of one type found in the sea and the other that you could make an potential ally (unless youre playing evil campaing)? two just sound so cool ;)

Looking to Play a Shadar-Kai One DnD Shadow Monk/Hexblade with Criminal Background, at level 11 with a 6/5 split I'll be able to shadow jump with a 60ft range and do four attacks per round without using my bonus action by taking the Thirsting Blade Invocation, throw in Serpents Fang longsword for equipment and the Weapon Mastery Feat I'm potentially doing 4x1d10+3+1d10Poison for an average 52 damage per round. I'd also add the Serpents Scale armour for 18AC

Drunken Master Monk Dwarf making use of either hit-and-run or hit and dodge. The latter healing with the dwarfen fortitude feat after clapping and potentially stunning someone and then watch them trying to attack you and potentially make them hit an ally.
Imagine a seemingly drunk older dwarf with a belly turning out to be a combat monster... sounds really fun to me (for visualisation: someone like Jigo from "Princess Mononoke")

I personally am against the homebrew that Nat 1 on ability check is insta fail 5:25 you literally remove any posibility of stealth mission if nat 1 insta fails.
I am exited about Shadow Gunk or Shadow Skill Expert. Pass without trace to get that Surprise Round. Perhaps fish Devil's Sight via Eldritch Adept if DM allows of 2 levels Warlock after level 6.
