  • Throwing weapons build are in my favorite category: things that got vastly improved by Tasha's Cauldron. Oddly enough it took me a while to make a new weapon throwing build. Oh well, here it is!

This does sound like a fun character to play!

The fact that 5e combat usually only lasts a few turns makes this build appealing, I think.

Yeah, gloomstalker is awful. Mostly because including it forces the rest of the party to adapt to its playstyle. It's as bad if not worse than darkness/devil's sight builds. I disagree that hunter is not as good as the non-PHB rangers. Colossal slayer and Horde breaker are excellent damage boosts. And you don't have to skulk around in the dark. Hence why I dislike the kobold pick as well. Variant human gets a feat and there are a couple I'd want for this build so I'd do that. And I'd go for more battlemaster levels. Unless I wanted to lean into the returning weapon build. Eldritch knight + 2 Artificer levels (for returning weapon & enhance weapon infusions). The problem is the reliance on Int and the spells not improving the build.

Hunter is the better of the phb subclasses, but lacks scaling. Colossal slayer is only ever 1d8/turn, later similar mechanics scale their dice better. Horde breaker is great if the enemy clutters a lot.
Variant human is often a better pick, but I steer clear from it on purpose. There are very few builds that don't become better with a free-pick feat at lvl 1, but it also becomes really boring really quickly for me to build around that. I like showcasing other races a bit more than just saying "picky vary human with feat x" every build video.
It's true that some builds can steer parties towards a certain playstyle, but gloomstalker is not that decisive (devil's sight for sure has a stronger impact). The single ability that revolves around darkness should not decide the entire playstyle. It's just a nice exploration boon to have.

I hate monster races. Originally, they were given special abilities to offset the fact that they were not accepted in towns and cities. But in 5e, thanks to the optimized community, goblins, orcs, lizardfolk, and kobolds are super popular. The PHB races are boring by comparison. Ugh!

I rarely encounter players that play monster races tbh. They're not thought of as being boring whatsoever.
Don't forget that a lot of people play d&d to play those iconic races.
Since the game encourages you to create your own setting and cities, it's weird to think goblins are never accepted and thus should be given something to offset any potential social disadvantage they might have...

Variant Human joins the chat, popular with optimisers you say?

@jesseseva2219 Touche. That one connected. I guess I am old school D&D where you didn't play monsters, you killed monsters. And there was a distinct difference between the two.
