They are gorgeous plants. I do put Macodes Petola in an open terrarium before but it doesn't like drying out to I closed it and it's loving the humidity and moist and putting out more growth. Thanks for your tips and advice and I love your collections

Hi Lifepaholic, great that it is working for you with a closed terrarium! I battled for a while to keep a few Macodes petola alive but this way it seems to be doing good for me. It's important to find what is comfortable and works for you. I am glad that you have found a good solution! My pellonia (the plant that is not an orchid) does great in closed terrariums in case you want to give it a go ;) . Thanks I will upload an update video soon :) ! I wish you the best for this new year and great success with your plant projects!

Well they are no harm to any plant, to the contrary they keep the mold in check, I use them for my closed terrariums and they work pretty well. In addition they are super cheap

Hi! your video inspired me a lot. I also fell in love with Jewel Orchids recently and thinking to grow them in a terrarium glass bowl (without a cover). I successfully did it, but after 2 days in the terrarium all of them has become withered..could you please give me some advice to make it healthier as yours 🙂🙂 thank you!

Hi Ganies! Very nice that you went on board and did it, it's a very nice project. About maintenance what I did is that I kept the orchids in an initial glass container in only sphagnum( like you see in n the video) for a couple of months to aclimate them to that setup. And also to understand better the watering... So how often and how much water to give them, since I already killed a few Macodes Petola in the past. So that thought me that I should add water and keep it humid but not to much water to keep it soggy. Still my Macodes Petola does not look the best. I am also using the Ludisia discolor and it's alba cultivar that are hardier and more forgiving so maybe you can start a terrarium with orchids that are a bit less difficult. I also added the Pellionia that is also easy to care for, besides that the Macodes sanderiana turned out to be easier to care for and more tolerant. Another thing that I do is to check that the terrarium doesn't go bone dry so I try to spray it with little water (not hard water) every 3 days or so only on the ground not on the leaves. On top of this I added springtails that are small insects that I put always in my terrarium. They are not necessary but they eat mold and spores so it keeps in cleaner and less prone to mold outbreaks (that's why is also important to limit the amount of water, and add only enough to keep it slightly wet)... I know it sounds like a lot but once you figure out the watering it will for sure help and the success I think that is one of the trickiest parts. On top of that they need only moderate light and no direct sunlight at all. And what also helps for me is that I have normally some small windows open so that air circulates a bit and avoid accumulation of bacterias and fungus spores. But tell me what happened to your orchids? Did they rot from the roots or what happened?

Thank you very much for the detail explanation. I truly highly appreciated! And it seems I also killed all of my Jewel Orchids 😭😭 due to my impatient to put all of them inside the terrarium though they’re still tiny babies that have just came from the online shop which i ordered. I checked the moss inside the terrarium as well and it was over wet..may be i need to use a water spray only to freshen them up inside the terrarium instead of watering them directly. now I’ve learned a lot. I will buy it again and growing it in a pot first until they’re all strong and steady, then after that I will put it in the terrarium by following your advices..Thank you again😊😊

@@ganies_gsa yes when you use a terrarium it's actually pretty difficult to not overwater them as the sphagnum can hold the water for ages inside the glass bowl

Why did the foliage of Macodes sanderiana curl up ? 🤔

Hi Shrijona, probably because of the low humidity of the environment, my house is very dry! a bit after putting it in the terrarium it got better and it is doing quite good!
