Hello Dani! I love my jewel orchids. Mine developed 12 flower spikes in March and now lots of new growth shoots happening. Thanks for your videos. I learn alot. Take care.
Perfect timing, Dani! My favourite online seller, Steve’s Leaves, here in USA just notified me that Ludisia discolor is back in stock so I ordered my first one. Thanks for all the tips and tricks. I now feel prepared to take care of my newest plant friend. 🌱
I agree with your light appraisal! Mine is happiest in the corner where none of my Hoya or other orchids will like! Figured that out with a bit of trial and error of course
I love my jewel orchids. My Macodes I had to put in terrariums because their leaves got curly and crispy. I had one that rotted at the base on the stem and I cut it in three parts that is now growing leaves and roots from each part. They love it now with all the moisture. I am in the high desert in Oregon so it gets pretty dry. Thanks for all the information.
I just got a Nishikirian Japan jewel orchid. When I asked the guy what it was, he showed it on his phone and I thought he was showing me where it was from, but it seems like that’s the name of it. I saw it when I went into a nursery just looking for moss and I came out with a jewel orchid and no moss. It’s so pretty and it looks so delicate like something from Japan. I want to start a terrarium. I’m glad to hear that they are easy and hardy.
Hi, this is the first time I watched your channel, but I really like the style of this video. It's dense with information and calme with the camera movements and I was greatly entertained watching. :) I just got a Ludisia cutting and didn't really know anything about jewel orchids, so I'm happy to have found this video. Love the mulching and the wide pots. Greetings from a fellow EU citizen. ^__^
An orchid that enjoys soil and low light? Why didn’t I look into this sooner!? I feel so silly for thinking jewel orchids were intimidating! I have so many places that would be perfect for them and I just love the look of their foliage 😍 Now to save up for a self-watering pot 👀
Same here, I think you have the perception of jewel orchids being though because usually they’re grown in terrariums. I found yesterday a nice one for 15€ in a supermarket, big plant and quite healthy as well
I have a macodes and was doing okay, but during winter the leaves died off and started to rot. I trimmed the end and going to try propagating it in water. Really hope I haven’t lost it, it’s beautiful and so small.
I got a little baby ludisia a couple of months ago and immediately rotted the stem by forgetting to empty the cachepot after watering. I quickly removed the good top part of the stem and thankfully was able to root it again and start from scratch! Thank you for this timely video, will not be killing this plant twice.
I just got my ludisia five days ago. It arrived very, very floppy from being mailed bare root. The plant is just a single rooted stem, though it's over a foot long, so I hope it will branch out soon. I stuck it in a dart frog vivarium though, so it's basically living in a rainforest now. Took about 12 hours to perk all the way back up from the journey, but it looks pretty happy at this point, just hanging out with a small vanilla planifolia vine. The next dart frog orchid I want is a masdevallia, because there is absolutely no way I can keep one of those outside vivarium conditions in my dry home conditions, but I love them. My frogs will just have to deal with my orchid collection invading their house too.
Great tips. You are correct in them being very forgiving and adaptable. I have my Ludisia growing in a well-draining, peat-lite mix (peat moss, perlite and vermiculite). I have them in a shallow bonsai pot in an East facing window. They receive approx 3 hours of morning sun daily, through a screened window. This helps keep them more upright without as much flopping over. ✌✌☯☯♥♥
Oh superb jewel orchids ,I like them much ,And I bought one ☝️ three months ago .Actually this video is really helpful for me .Thanks a lot .You have a lots of gorgeous orchids .i think my house is like this too .Wonderful video .Thank you again
Thank you very much for such an informative video. I got my first Jewel Orchid today, i was mesmerised by its magical shimmer 😍 normal orchids don't like me, so I was a bit worried about this tipe of orchids, especially as they are quite pricie, but it looks like the care is very similar to tradescantia. Hopefully my little Jewel will like me 😊
Great timing, I just bought Ludisia on Saturday. I've kinda wanted it for some time now, but never saw any for sale. And them boom, they appeared in Leroy Merlin. Mine actually has a scent, luckily not very strong, only when you get close to the plant - it's kinda intense, soapy, reminds me of jasmine.
Love jewel orchids! Such a helpful video. As a side note, I wouldn’t recommend to keep using slow release fertilizer since it made with micro plastics 😔😞
I didn’t know that either! And yes, they are in the coating. It’s sad cause its a good product to keep the plants well fed but not worth the contamination for me.
Bought one of these this winter. Looks really good, seems to thrive so far. By the by: I've so far treated it like my other orchids, meaning I give it sparse amounts of orchid fertilizer (say about twice a month or less). Should I feed it more often, and would you suggest I stick with orchid fetilizer, or is sparse amounts of regular fertilizers safe?
I've found that ludisia does well in shallow wide bonsai pots, in any well-draining terrestrial mix. And it's much more forgiving than macodes. But macodes is more beautiful in my opinion. :) Edit: subscribed!
I have a Ludisia it's already bloom 3 times now its getting Leggy. Looks like its dying too. Now that I see how you re pot and propagate . I think I have to do that right now. I hope it will survive. Thank you for sharing.
I grow many orchids and gesneriads, but I seem to have a lot of trouble with the Ludisia orchids. Perhaps a different soil and rise in temperature will help. Thanks for the advise.
Thank you so much. I was worried about killing mine. I spread the 4 pieces between 4 vivariums. seems generally theyre very durable. This video relaxed my anxiety about new plants a lot.
Hi Danny ! Your video on jewel orchid has really given me lot of knowledge. One thing i want to ask as to how to water them while growing in terrarium, as it do not have vents for water to be through
Your Ludisia’s look amazing! Mine seem to have gotten verrrrrrrrry leggy. Still haven’t flowered. My medium is a mix of potting mix, perlite and small bark mixture. Understanding the the bark may have broken down it’s possible the medium is getting compacted. My question: is there an ideal time to repot? Also any intentions or thoughts on doing a care guide for epicatanthe orchids? Thanks Dani
I bought a Macodes petola and a Macodes sanderiana almost 2 years ago. The petola has done reasonably okay in just sphagnum moss. I tried dirt for a while but she didn't seem very happy, so I put her back in moss and now i have been able to take one cutting. I always seem to have a problem with leggy stalks, slow to open leaves and it takes a long time for leaves to darken fully. I haven't been feeding her very much so maybe I will try more food. The sanderiana however was a disaster. The cutting i bought was healthy and had decent roots. I kept it in exactly the same conditions as the petola. It grew 2 new leaves then started to flower! I let the flower develop and cut it when it was finished, But one by one all the leaves died and then the roots started to rot. I tried everything but I couldn't save it. It did see a new leaf growth node swell once, but the root rot was unstoppable, and it never came to anything. I was very sad, it was a beautiful plant. Should I have cut the flower bud as soon as it appeared ?
Hey Danny, whatever happened to your monk orchid (Oeceoclades)? I don't think I've seen it recently. I got one not long before the first time I saw it in one of your vids and its a weird little bugger. Mine grew to three bulbs, and everyone that has grown in since an old one dies so I'm stuck at three. Also, has anyone removed the flower spike on a Ludisia before it formed buds and how did that affect the plant? Would it encourage the plant to put more into leaves or not?
From my experience those black spots are rot, not snails. I've never had snails on jewel orchids (yet, fingers crossed), but those little spots of rot do occur when they are in dense media without much aeration.
I don't really agree that they prefer low light. My jewel orchids (Macodes Petola and Aspidogyne Argentea) got really leggy. They're now under a grow light and are doing much better 🙂
Great tips! I just ordered one for a new terrarium. I love the plant in your terrarium located at the bottom left corner. Is that moss? If so, what kind?
Thx. I was about to buy one of these last week. And after I talked to the staff, I decided not to, because the staff doesn't really know how to keep these plants. So I don't think I got a chance to keep it alive. And these plants are quite expensive. I just wanna make sure I know how to keep it before I buy one. (BTW, I really don't like the pearlite.)
I noticed that you planted several Ludisia plants closely together. I would like to consolidate my darker Ludisias into a wide shallow pot or mix two black with two albanias. how close can I bunch them. I also have the “leggy growth” issue, so I moved it to a window. However, they are not putting out roots at the node.
Hi, I would just try to add as many stems as they won't overlap eachother. Make sure the mix stays moist, otherwise they have the tendency to lose lower leaves.
Hi there! Great video, can’t seem to find any info online about safe fungicides for jewel orchid. Is potassium bicarbonate safe? Any advice would be much appreciated :)
I bought a macodes last Summer. It’s planted in an open terrarium . Unfortunately it’s not growing well. One leaf is left but it is curled. A new leaf is coming. Maybe my medium is wrong.
I'm in EU but I've never seen or heard about snails (as a problem, I've seen a snail sometimes, like once a year or few). I guess mediterranian vs. nordic is a completely different world.
Well today a friend gifted me with a Bulbophyllum Medusae ( Bulbophyllum Orchid ) Wikipedia posts that it has an unpleasant aroma. How should I pot this? Sphagnum or bark?
If you put your jewel orchids in a terrarium how can you fertilize them that way or is adding worm castings to the mix good enough? My jewels grow but they seem like they need some fertilizer but I’m not sure if it’s possible to fertilize this way so can you help me and tell me if and how I can do it please and thanks?
@@MissOrchidGirl so could I use fertilizer balls because I make my own mix I use spag moss cut into small pieces, lava rocks small, coir, and worm castings so could I add those to the mixture and them be ok I have never used fertilizer balls but have been wanting to try them out.

I appreciate that you were able to capture the shimmer of the leaves on camera. I never thought too much of these orchids until now. Really pretty!
