I love this video so much. I am planning to make a vivarium since I have some broms n tillandsias in my garden. I love your sense of humor plus the scientific terms.
Thanks so much! This was actually for a university project back in the day. I enjoyed making it though so maybe more videos like this will come out in the future.
I'm a grad student in ecology and I found this video fantastically educational and engaging. Keep up the great content! Some more B-roll of your awesome frogs would be appreciated
I really loved this video, thank you for the information. I am soon going to build my first vivarium. I really want to know as much as possible about the plants I want to have in it.
Great video Mike!! I love that you put your references in there. Nature never ceases to amaze people like us. I'm in S. Alberta also, maybe one day soon I will get a chance to meet you! (Reptile show maybe lol)✌
Hey Mike, thank you for the information video. I think you should do a lot more videos like this to give information especially about terrarium’s. 🐢🦎🐸🐊🐍👊🏼
Mike, great video! Your tanks look FRIKKIN' great! Unbelievable. Also, great info. I have not ventured into planted tanks yet but will after watching this. Thanks. Wally
I don't have dart frogs but I did enjoy learning about the plant and how things work together. That's interesting stuff and I'd love to learn more about stuff like this. Great video.
I do dream of a tank like yours. Too bad I don’t know how to set one up yet. Still new to the reptile hobby. Love your channel mike. I’m always learning new stuff. Thanks for sharing friend. 👍 I enjoyed it.
Awesome. I love this fascinating hobby. I'm currently working on the bioactive fauna for my Vivariums then onward and forward. Thanks for all the in-depth information. Valuable indeed. My question today is can Caladiums thrive in Vivariums
Thanks Mike, very informative 👌 I’ve been avoiding to use too many bromeliads in my vivariums but now I feel i should make one vivarium with more bromeliads :D
Thats so cool I had no idea there were myrmecophytic bromiliads, I know about some of the more common ones like ant trees and stuff but thanks for the info! I really enjoy studying ants and love every bit of info on it them I can get :D
Totally depends on the parameters of the tank you are looking for. I would say that misting a couple times a day for a short period is best, but I can't really share best practices for a situation I am unaware of.
Good stuff Mike, definitely a great introduction to botany! Since getting my lined day geckos, I’ve seen them defecting frequently in the phytotoma (is that the plural or singular?) of their bromeliads - I wonder if they’ll change in growth patterns with the extra nutrients? It’ll be interesting to see!
@@MikeTytula one of them is Catopsis berteroniana and it’s carnivorous. Others are Spanish moss and other various air plants. I saw there was a Guzmania native to Florida as well.
Hey Mike! I am setting up a vivarium for tree frogs (fringe leaf, amazon milk, waxy... I am still not sure what species). What do you think about bromeliads for their enclosure? Thanks for this video!
It can definitely work! the waxy would likely be too big for many species of commonly available broms, but the others you should be able to find one that is big enough.
Great video, very interesting and informative but my family already worry about me and my menagerie that I daren't start any of the mentioned "dinner party" topics!
Mike- is the mutualistic relationship between the ants and bromeliads the same as a symbiotic relationship. A bit off tangent- if you every have time, watch Medicine Man (with Sean Connery) great movie, makes you think, and wonderful relationship with his co-star.
Hi Mike I did have a question for you, I have a paludarium with fish but no terrestrial animals, if I were to put Bromeliads in the land section how do I make sure they get enough nutrients (since no frogs etc. would be using them)? Should I place some organic material in the base of the bromeliad as a nutrient source? Thank you!
I once put rabbit poop into Neoregelias. Just to try if they’d get nutrients from the rabbit poop. I did it quite a while to a one Neoregelia and to be honest I didn’t see any changes. Neither good or bad but I guess they could get something out of it. The vivarium was empty of animals at that time.
Yay plant videos!!! I just want to know why I can’t keep my broms alive. :(. They’re in my crested geckos enclosure, have a Tincman herps LED bulb. Was watering the center part (not going to try and spell the name) And they aren’t getting the super bright colors or are they living very long. Le sigh.
@@MikeTytula ive heard that they are somehow different from other members of the bromeliade family. I know they have trichomes on the entirety of their leaves and that they flower from the middle, but I'm not sure this is a significant difference. Based on this video, it seems to me that they are just another bromeliad. Btw tillandsia are "air plants" for those who were unaware.
This guy is awesome.
Thanks Crystal! :)
This is awesome dude. I’m a biology fan and a reptile keeper so this is right up my alley.
Thanks Zach I wish I had time to do more of the deep sciency stuff like this one!

Yes! Thank you for a plant video. I love your channel
Thanks Nick! Hope you enjoyed!
excellent lecture on Bromeliad/frog care etc! This will help in my adventures in Bromeliad care. Very cool! Thanks for posting this video!.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed!
Great video Mike! Dr. Addy should be happy! Great information.
I got a decent mark on the project so I’d consider it a success!
Great video! Thanks for the SUPER detailed information! It was extremely helpful!
Glad you enjoyed! This was actually a university project hahah

Thanks Nathan! This was for a university class project, and I really enjoyed making it!
Your channel should be bigger. Love how through you are with the studies. Wish there was more of this stuff with content creators
Thanks Rob, unfortunately education doesn't make it very far in the pet side of youtube lol
Very informative! Thank you. I would enjoy more videos like this please.
Thanks!

Thanks! That was the goal for this video!

haha those insane vivariums are Troy Goldberg's (Check him out on youtube here: th-cam.com/users/troyz22)
Great video Mike! Maybe next plant video you can inform us about different orchids that are suitable for vivariums?
I might be able to do that! I just picked up a bunch!

It's more of Troy Goldberg tanks haha.
I hope u do more vids like this. I loved it
Glad you enjoyed!
Interesting video bro,
Also you've got some lovely darts there I'm very jealous,
Really nice setups too👍🏻
A lot of those darts are my buddies haha
Awesome. I love this fascinating hobby. I'm currently working on the bioactive fauna for my Vivariums then onward and forward. Thanks for all the in-depth information. Valuable indeed. My question today is can Caladiums thrive in Vivariums
Truhfully not many terrariums are big enough for caladiums. You might see them in stores when they are tiny, but as they grow they get massive.
One thing i recommend is neogrelia Hawaï and neogrelia akeso they are doing great and look nice aswell, especialy the blooming of akeso
There is a ton of neos that are beautiful!
This was interesting, i knew some things and didn't know some things, good video
Glad you enjoyed!

You should man! Your setups are insane! Hope some day I'm in your country (where ever that is :D) and get to see them haha
Thanks man! Haha well, you’re welcome but you might want to book a little bit more time for that trip. I live in Finland 😁
hahah alright! Sounds good man!

Great vid mike!
Thanks for watching!
Hi ! What should be the irrigation period and times? How many times a day should I spray? I will be glad if you help
Totally depends on the parameters of the tank you are looking for. I would say that misting a couple times a day for a short period is best, but I can't really share best practices for a situation I am unaware of.

Phytotelma is the singular, phytotelmata is the plural. It's possible that it can change.
i'm actually pretty sure that bromeliads will benefit from vertebrates waste - such as from frogs or geckos!
Cool stuff to learn...I think I'm going to add one or two to my crested gecko's enclosure
Should do well!
Thanks for the video

There are a few bromeliads native to Florida, most being tillandsia though
What species is it?

Wow I actually learned something here
Glad you learned something man!
I know this video is old but PLEASE tell me where I can get a huge tank like that or any huge tank large enough for a 7 ft snake
Custom built
Where can I get one of those heavy duty racks?
Pretty much any home improvement centre or Costco

Vriesea hieroglyphica

A symbiotic relationship is just when two organisms have long term contact with each other, it can be mutualistic, parasitic, or commensalistic.

In that case there might not be an invertebrate life inside the phytotelma, therefore you might just be better off having it filled with water.
Great thank you

Interesting maybe just the wrong kinds of bromeliads.
@@MikeTytula They're the Neoregelia type - same as what you just unboxed. One was a "Zoe?" I think...
So what is the significance of tillandsia?
significance? As in...?
@@MikeTytula ive heard that they are somehow different from other members of the bromeliade family. I believe one of the major difference (without researching it at all) is that they don't have phytotelmata, or at least many of them don't!
Do you use bromeliads with your geckos species as well or just dart frogs?
Mostly dart right now!
There are actually two confirmed carnivorous bromeliads of the genera Brocchinia and catopsis
Awesome! Thanks for the info, I’ve heard they exist but didn’t know they have been confirmed!
