Here is a southern boy tip on catching gar. Take a piece of white nylon rope, about 1/4" in diameter. Burn one end so it will not ravel. Now cut it about 6" long, but do not burn the cut end. Now comb out the nylon rope about 4" down from the burnt end. Once you have it combed out really good, take a short 12" piece of wire leader and run it through the rope just under the burn end and make a small loop and add a crimp lock, completing the loop. Now at the other end of the wire leader, add a strong swivel and a loop with a crimp lock. NO HOOK NEEDED. Tie the swivel to your line and cast it in the river, pulling it erratic thru the water. If a gar hits it, he will get his teeth hung in the combed out nylon rope and will not come off. Good luck.

Jeremy Wade used that method to catch needle fish when he was with a native tribe. It was a spider web they used, but exact same principle.

Great episode! Has all my favorite elements: Low-key/low-budget/no fuss fishing trip. Interesting mix of fish. Quick pace. And really fun check-in with Ella! Your tourney coverage is always fun and entertaining to watch too, but these are a nice break and it is really great to see the both of you having so much fun around home. More of these sorts of episodes would be great. Many thanks!

The secret to hooking a gar is understanding a gar. I use minnows for bait. Live or dead does not matter. When they take the minnow, it lies across their jaws. If you try to set the hook, you'll only pull the hook out of your minnow and the gar gets a free meal. You have to wait until they rise to the surface to flip the minnow around head-first and then swallow. Sometimes they will swim for a hundred yards before they'll swallow it. You will see them stick their snouts above the water. I float them towards the gar and if they take the bait and your cork goes under, give them free line until you either see them swallow the bait or the cork surfaces, and you see their snouts snapping above the water. Wait as they swim off until you can't wait anymore. Then, wait a few more seconds. And then hit them hard!
    Enjoy your 5-foot gar! ; )

Haven’t done that in years. Last time I did that with a couple of buddies, we are all very experienced anglers , but we grabbed a six pack and went down to the river. We had the same kind of a mixed bag. We filleted up those into nice sized chunks and fried them up with different dipping sauces. So we had a nice feed for 6 adults. All the wives loved the meal, and I was just dead simple like fishing when we were kids. Pearch, crappies, catfish, walleye and they were all excellent.

Take the Sawzall behind the head to break through, then tin snips down the back, filet out the hard shell and then gently run down the bones all the way down. There is more but thats the big meat. It's great fried in nuggets.

Interesting, Spencer! I have eaten all except the White bass, it is not wide spread here in Michigan. Channel Cats are, as well as Drum (at least in the Great Lakes). Gar are wide spread, but very rarely caught. I prefer Flathead over Channels as far as catfish go, and drum is very good smoked. Have you ever eaten the Asian Bighead or Silver carp? I would think either would be excellent canned up like we do salmon and spring White and Longnose Suckers.

Down here in south Louisiana/Mississippi, we take Gar-fish, run it through our meat grinder, then mix it with green onions, chopped green pepper, bread crumbs, and egg, and seasonings, then form patties with it, and fry it, that's what we commonly referred to as "Gar Balls", and it is incredible!

Your content is great, brother. A tip I picked up from my in-laws regarding the white bass is to put a light coat of mustard on them before you fry them and it'll somehow make it less fishy. It works, give it a shot.

Yeah I'd agree with you both on those picks, well, except channel cat, a lot of people like them and that's alright, I just never cared much about them and farm raised is worse tasting than the wild channel, in my book. No offense to any of you or anyone else out there, that's just my taste, you know what my favorite catfish is Spencer, I've told you enough, I think, anyhow yeah flathead is the best catfish to me, it rates right up there with bluegill, well sunfishes in general, Or rather I should say panfish in general, including largemouth bass and smallmouth bass, both are pretty good eating fish and it doesn't hurt to keep a few bass every now and then, that's not going to deplete the population, probably helps more than anything, right Spence? And my third favorite would have to be the perch family, walleye, sauger, saueye, and yellow perch. Anyways, I'm blabbing, my bad! Later y'all 🤙✌️

    • @RiverCertified

Enjoyed this. I live in MO and have always thought gar was too bony to be edible. Do you skin them like catfish? Will definitely try the next one I catch. You mentioned "red meat". I suppose any reddish meat and the sensory line should be trimed out before cooking. Right?
Had carp in Illinois. It was delicious. My MIL chunked it up and sliced nearly through about half an inch thick, or narrower
. She rolled it in cornmeal with a little flour stirred into it. Hthen she deep fried it. The bones cooked up and were not a problen. The meat was white and flaky. Very good.

Full disclosure I find any fish inedible (all fish taste vile to me-unfortunately) but I have no problem catching, cleaning and cooking them. My dad and a lot of my older depression era neighbors ate all sorts of fish considered rough or trash fish. Drum was a big favorite, pretty much all of them ate gar, carp, suckers, buffalo even bowfin. If it swam,, they'd eat it if it was handled carefully. Bleed them, cut out the dark meat, keep them cool and they were glad to get them. A couple guys smoked some but most just fried them. There was a spot on pool 19 where if nothing else was biting we brought home stringer after stringer of drum. I'd clean them, save the otaliths for my collection, enough for dad and then start passing out bags of fillets. My sweet next door neighbor who baked me pies got pick of the fish. Nice cats, crappie etc. but she'd take whatever we had. Enjoyed providing for those folks. Every one of them has passed away and I sure miss them.

So mix ceviche out of cooked white bass. Got it. I must have caught a million good size white bass growing up in Michigan and fishing in Lake St Clair. I never ate a catfish the whole time growing up there, and we used to throw drum and gar back. Trash fish we called them. We were all about walleye and perch. Until I visited Tennessee 20 years later after moving away from Michigan I had never eaten catfish. But after going to Nashville and eating catfish, and being blown away and how good they were, even though they were probably farm raised, that was all I wanted to eat for a period of time when I ate fish. Fun experiment with he Mrs. My wife is not a person that wants to eat any kind of fish. But she definitely enjoyed beer-battered walleye fillets. It's a pity we can't get them where we live these days. There's barely even water where we live now.

Spencer I can see gar....the back strap is excellant but the drum.....I have tried eating drum several different ways and I would eat 100 gar before I would eat a drum. I even tried the small ones and didn't have any luck. Not saying drum are bad but the ways I have cooked it which is frying and blackening just didn't turn out well. I always thought freshwater drum would be very similar to red drum or aka red fish but to me it is night and day. That's why I tried blackening freshwater drum and they definatley don't taste the same.
