The best tasting fish are the ones that you cook right away after catching them. I was taught that by my father who I unfortunately lost in February of 2018. I will never forget all of the times that we fished together. Keep up your great work that you do on your videos. Keep on fishing.
Your father was absolutely right. Trout cooked next to the stream needs NOTHING and it's delicious. Fry it in bacon grease and it's even better. Some fish I only eat if it is right away, like Bluefish.

I recently moved to LaCross, WI and have been fishing the Mississippi River. I have had several old timers tell me that drum are really good eating. I’m glad you posted this, I think I’m going to try it.
That's an absolutely beautiful spot to fish. I've wanted to get into drum fishing lately. I recently came across a couple articles talking about how underappreciated they were as a sport fish. They get big, they get aggressive, they fight hard, they're good eating. They're really not so much different than the prized red drum that everyone loves catching.
My 3 year old son and I watch your channel often. Last night when I was putting him to bed, he said he was going to catch the fish kill it and grill it. It was pretty awesome.
Great video Spencer. Thanks for taking us along! I have eaten a lot of drum. My grandfather called them river perch and so I did not know what they truly were for many years. That 2nd one was a tank!
I would catch these all night off a concrete pier in Cleveland on Lake Erie. Some guys would save them and I would give mine to them. I caught one once that was as long as my leg. I had my finger through the gill and the tail was slapping my boot. I asked these guys if they wanted it and they were more than happy to take it. We always called them Sheephead or Sheepshead. I thought them to be like Carp.
What I've learned: 3 sizes of catfish. Dinner, Dandy, & monster. Cooking fish on the spot just pulled from the water makes me drool on myself. Sleeping in a boat on the river is now a must do for me. Keep up the good work brother your good at what you do👊
I love drum!!! I used to just throw them on the bank or throw them back because I was listening to everybody else. Finally I cleaned 1 and have been hooked🎣
Same as someone here just said.. my new favorite catfish (bait soaking) channel. The ideas I get here I pass on to my son for when we go hit the water. Enjoy the channel so much, thanks for videos! On a side note when you cook it always looks so good it makes me hungry.
I grew up calling drum "sheephead". Whenever we caught some, we'd give them to my Dad's friend who would cut them up into bite-sized chunks and pickle them with onions (and later mushrooms, my suggestion ;) ). He called them "tasty treats". You could eat 'em out of the jar or on a cracker. Best fresh because the pieces would be nice and firm. Pretty dang tasty, indeed. (Also, your videos are great. They are my preferred lunch time viewing. Keep filming and sharing!)
Glad to see another that picks up after the litter bugs. I had a fishing trip that didn’t go well, but pulled couple bags of trash out of the weeds. I use the smaller drums for cut bait. I’ll have to try the bigger ones. 👍🏻
We ate lots of Goo when I was growing up in south Louisiana. Try boiling them in crab boil, and see if you think it is a fair substitute for crab meat...!
This is way I watch him, he just genuinely fishes like any other person, those spots you catch somem and other not at all, love this guy, I am learning a lot about catfish and how to catfish by just watching him catfish 😂

Great Video Spencer! I was wondering if you planned on maybe making an updated video on what kind of setup/rig you use for catching flatheads and possibly talk about the types of knots that you use as well? Another great video!
I have been slaying the drum on plastics in the Mississippi lately. Got about 50 in a few hours this morning. Ranging 9-20” or so. When the Mississippi comes up and gets a certain amount of that, they get stacked up in a predictable spot and man it’s like bluegill fishing one after the other 3-10 pounds all day long. It’s a very good time on walleye and bass gear.
When I was a kid my dad used to take us over to Spirit Lake, Iowa, to fish for bullheads. We managed to catch some nice drum in the process, and I much preferred eating the drum. I still like to eat them but there are advisories on eating the ones I catch in the Minnesota River. Perhaps a trip to Spirit Lake would be a good idea!
Fish Advisory in Minnesota? I would have bet on clean water out your way. I live alongside the Connecticut river in Western Massachusetts. We have a fish advisory from my location to the ocean. Generally speaking, don't eat it. Polution, sewage, and acid rain.
@@eddypetch That's a real bummer! The Minnesota River is a silty river that contains a lot of ag runoff. You can still eat the fish, but don't eat the big ones.

I hear they're pretty similar to their saltwater cousins which are excellent eating and a prized gamefish. Kind of funny how that works. You should try grilling them on the halfshell or blackening them.
We catch red and black drum in the ocean here in Galveston and let me tell they are delicious! They eat crabs, shrimp and fish, so they taste incredible!
Hey River Certified. If you want to eliminate those chewy ones, try placing them on ice as soon as you catch them. I've been doing this for years and it's rare as heck for me to run into one with a chewy texture. I think that placing them on a stringer or in a live basket stresses them out and the stress somehow affects the texture of their flesh.
Drum are some good eating. My cousin and I used to catch them all the time in MO. Great tasting fillets. Sucks about your stringer, but, it happens!! And the trash. Yep, I try and pick up trash when I am out running around too. What really is bad, I have found that people who fish, are the BIGGEST litterers in the outdoors! I do a lot of backpacking and camping, and the trash is no where near as bad on the trails and campsites, as it is where people frequently fish. Man, thumbs up a million times 👍👍👍👍 I felt amazing when you started to pick up the trash that other people left there. I can’t understand why people do that! Thanks brother , your video is amazing !👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
I seen the title and immediately knew what fish it was. I love some drum fish lol greatly under appreciated fish. Decent fight with a good taste yet most people still consider it a trash fish
I cooked one whole last month. It tasted like seafood or clams to me and there were not a ton of bones. I'd like to find a somewhat healthy and tasty way to cook them other than frying. I'll bet the fillet is better because you can remove the red stuff. I think it could be bomb as a gumbo or jambalaya.
We have freshwater Drum, called Sheepshead locally, in Lake Erie. I've caught them up to 15lbs+. But the big ones are too dense and oily. My wife and I wanna experiment with them to find a cooking method to make even the big ones good. But up to about 3 1/2lbs, they are so good, that if you weren't told what you were eating, you wouldn't guess!
Solid video. Good job on clean up and getting out there and showing real life fun. Cook and eat right on the truck bed is awesome. Thank you for the videos
First video I’ve seen of yours great stuff man. I’ve never caught one myself but my friend caught a 10+ over the weekend. He was told it was a disgusting gross fish to eat. I’ve shown him a few things that say otherwise and he’s pissed he didn’t keep it. This videos gonna kill him. Tight lines brother!
I love drum. When I was a kid I use to collect the rocks that are in there head. Enjoyed the video man. Hope you’ll try soft shelled turtle, you’ll love it
Snapping turtle is damn good, especially thoroughly steamed and eaten as cold meat, crackers, cheese. A lot of places it's illegal to kill and harvest soft shells.
I'm a new subscriber and really enjoy your videos, not all that loud music, just simple talk, just my kind of format! Never ate a drum but might just have to give it a try! God bless and keep you safe, till next time!👍
Dude I am so glad to hear you say that about drum I grew up catching and eating them the water in the little red in Arkansas is really cold because of the dam and the drum are amazing love eating them people just don’t know
I had that happen on the Kaskaskia in Illinois one time, I caught like I think it was 6 drum and my dad caught about the same number, then we moved on down a bit because it seemed we were in Drum Turf and other fish just weren't wanting to be around them. We tossed them all back so someone else could enjoy them.
Had dinner with my Son and his family a bit ago and he grilled boneless mullet filets he caught yesterday with his cast net. Sprinkled with salt, black pepper, garlick powder, turmeric, and a light dusting with Bad Byron’s But Rub. Oh man they were good.
101 degrees outside. Nothing I'd rather watch. -) my dad used to take my sister and I fishing when we were kids. He'd let us sleep in the car until dawn. Lol fond memories!
Love eating drum myself as does my wife and daughter. Like you said get rid of all the red meat as possible and you cant tell. I cooked some up for a friend and i told hi it was channel cat cause he refused to eat drum. Gave it to him an he was like man what did you do so different cause it taste so much better. Man you done very well!!!! A catch clean and cooker like no other!!!! Those nuggets looked gourmet!!!! 👍🏾💯👍🏾
And the crunch! On an empty stomach, that was brutal! Lol
@@mj-ls7qr8xp3n 😂😂😂 The Lord will provide.
I remember catching Gasper Goo in the spillway in the 60s. My dad hated them. He was focused on bass only. Enjoyed this video.
Man, thumbs up a million times 👍👍👍👍
I felt amazing when you started to pick up the trash that other people left there.
I'm with ya man. It's funny how they're revered in salt water, but their freshwater cousins are ignored.
You had me at “might even use soap”. I’m subscribed!
🤣🤣🤣
Man you made that look good.. laying here in bed trying to relax so I can go to sleep decided to watch this video and now my mouth's watering.
Cut back straps out, boil till done, cool cut in cubes, dip in cocktail sauce 😋
Drums are definitely fun to catch too ! Another very good video !
Couldn't agree more. Glad you enjoyed it!
I bet the big ones would taste great smoked or blacken.
@@oldman9843 I just smoked some….wonderful!
Solid video. Good job on clean up and getting out there and showing real life fun. Cook and eat right on the truck bed is awesome. Thank you for the videos
Glad you enjoyed it. It was definitely a fine afternoon!
I was told the same thing, but cooked it anyway. Good eats
"might even use soap." LOL Country boy getting by with a natural immune system. That and dealing with missing stuff. Liked the video.
Thanks for sharing! I've always thrown drum back. Might need to try eating it next time I catch one.
Best fishing channel on the Tube🤌🏽
I'm a new subscriber and really enjoy your videos, not all that loud music, just simple talk, just my kind of format! Never ate a drum but might just have to give it a try! God bless and keep you safe, till next time!👍
Dude I am so glad to hear you say that about drum I grew up catching and eating them the water in the little red in Arkansas is really cold because of the dam and the drum are amazing love eating them people just don’t know
Nice lil set of "lucky stones" in the heads of those drum too just makes a nice bonus if you're cleaning em
great video. the drum looked tasty. it's fun to see other kinds of fish. stay safe.
Haha your awesome, I love your humor and non snobiness about eating "trashfish". Your the man
This was my experience when I went fishing this weekend. Nothing but drum!
At least you're catching!
True!
From western New York, we call'em sheepshead. They get huge in the mighty Niagara River! 5 and 6 lb smallies are common also!
Thanks for picking up the liter! I do it all the time. Crazy how people bring it out, but can’t bring it back with them.
Man you are one of the best out there today, don’t think your letting nothing make you diffrent, your the same every time you put out a video.
I'm glad ya appreciate it man. I'm not good at much other than being myself haha
More alternative catch and cook when the cattin' is slow is something I'd like to see.
I told him it was drum and now hes hooked.
Thank you my brother. I appreciated this time together thank you again.
Glad you enjoyed it.
I love catching and eating drum. Tie stringer to chair or to rod holder. I carry a basket too. Great video.
Last time I've had them was when I was kid. Brings back memories. Maybe this fall or next spring I'll have to try and get some now.
I bet those are good memories. Hope you get on a few!
@@RiverCertified Hey Spencer, what's with this I've been selected as winner thing? Smells "fishy" especially since they know where to send the gifts without me giving them my address apparently...
We absolutely eat Drum here! After my buddy and I had my brother try some, he eats them too now. Love the flavor in drum
I have eaten drum and it was delicious. As long
as you eat it fresh or put it on ice immediately it is superb.
Thank you for being a good guy! Picking up after those pigs. Appreciated the great spirit you have!
I do my best. Thanks for watching!
I find myself rewatching your videos all the time especially when I’m on my lunch break or bored at home. Anyways lol. I love drum and never throw them back. Fried or blackened is so so good. Super easy to clean too
That's awesome man. Glad ya dig em so much. I'm also glad I'm not the only person that eats drum.
@@RiverCertified ppl do look at you funny when you say you caught and kept a drum lol
Fished with a guy years ago.. i caught a few. He grilled em I supplied sweet corn in husks also on grill. He said pick meat off put on warm tortillas squeeze of lime juice. My favorite way for drum. Always eaten them and carp buffalo gar n all time favorite catfish all my life. Most everything is good of cooled properly
Hey I love your show! Your my kinda fisherman: it’s all about the FOOD!
Last week I tried two new flavors... while Frank's will always be a favorite... I used Jack In The Box taco sauce, (it was incredible) and the next one was 2 parts honey dijon mustard, 1 part sweet baby rays, and thin it out with water.... you've gotta try it, it's fantastic
Those both sound phenomenal. Now I just have to remember that haha
Oh yeah, we eat sheephead/drum as well. I primarily grill or smoke them. Most people I know don't eat them, nice to see someone else agreeing with me for a change. Also, everytime I fish I come back with other people's trash as well, it pisses me off. Thanks for helping to keep the waterways clean. Class act dude
They're definitely an underappreciated sport fish in most areas. I do my best. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I liked this chap after his first full sentence!! ,Wonderful,a normal guy . UK
I appreciate that sir. Thanks for watching!
I'll have to try it. Thanks as always for sharing brother!! 👍🏾👊🏾✊🏾🙂💯
Around 9:08, It was the loch Ness monter! Thx for the fishing vid, there always awesome.
Thank you for this video. You've encouraged me to go out and catch some drum. Hope I have success in catching some on my next trip out. Thank you once again. Looking forward for your next video.
They're a blast. Good luck dude!
Great video like always. But my favorite part is the staring into the camera and say this lunch is gonna be lit. Lol way to be in the current lingo.
