The event took part in Serbia, that was occupied by the Ottoman empire for few centuries. Orthodox Christian church help them endure and preserve their identity (language, history, etc).
Novi sad is part of Vojvodina, that had a different history. It was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, that viewed itself as a defender of Catholicism.
So if you are not making an argument, that every religion is opresive, but only christianity, you are not making it in a right context.
