  • This is a curious little instrument made by a curious little brand called Opus USA. There's no model number on it to be found. To be honest though, it's not bad quality. It definitely would be a decent option for a student-level player.

    Kinda sounds like singing with a stuffy nose. Interesting instrument for sure!

      Indeed, it does feel that way. Strange instrument, strange brand.

    Careful with the embouchure changes mate - it might be working for now, but it's not advisable... if you're taking the mouthpiece off your chops entirely when breathing and putting in back in a different place (it's most noticeable when you're jumping between pedals and high-register), it's not going to help you longer-term.

      Mate, I understand where you're coming from, but as I've made clear, I don't intend on becoming a professional trombonist or euphophonist. I don't know if I'll even have the time to play them beyond college. That's seven years. I can't afford to sacrifice an entire year to rework my embouchure so that I don't jump. The bottom line is that I hardly shift between the low and high range. The only shift that occurs is in the pedal region. I'm glad that you have suggestions to give, but at the moment I'm not in the position to make long term changes.

      I appreciate it's not something you're looking at as a career - I do think it'd be a shame if you didn't continue it beyond college, but it's ofcourse up to you.
      It's not something that needs a crazy amount of work, just something to be conscious of and try to do it without the shift if you possibly can.
      Either way, best of luck as always.

      Update: A couple days ago my trombone instructor had me switch to a 50/50 embouchure in all registers. I only lost two octaves up top and half my pedal range ;-) I'll stick it through, however, and hopefully it'll be worth it.

      Hope it works out for you - based on what I've seen of your playing I'd have stuck with the IVA and tried to expand it downwards, but your teacher probably knows you better - in any case, if you can do it all on one embouchure it'll be much more consistent and stable in the longer term.
      As always, best of luck

      It’s quite small. Definitely a good size for an elementary schooler.

      Sorry, I guess I could at least leave a meaningful comment. Your hair is very tall in this video. Also, good review of this instrument.

    Looks like a Euphonium not a baritone. Why do you define it as a baritone?

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Baritones can have a huge variety of different constructions. They don't all have forward-facing bells or compact, UK-style designs or the Russian oval shape. The defining characteristic of a baritone is its bore and how cylindrical or conical said bore is. The tubing on this instrument expands very little compared to a euphonium, and though the bell itself is larger than that of a UK baritone, the bore leading up to the bell section is pretty comparable. It's a small instrument, and the sound reflects that- it definitely doesn't have a euphonium-like sound.
