Just taught this game to 2 different kids today ages 6 and 8. Neither of which are familiar with board games. Im not going to lie and say they had huge understanding of strategy but they understood game flow and they came up with basic strategies on what they wanted to try and do to win. They both had a blast. Its all in how you introduce the game to someone and breakdown the rule concepts.
Good video. I understand your points, and support your decision, but for me the theme and asymmetry, as well as the mind game of simultaneous card reveal make it unique enough that I return to it. In fact, I just did a video where my friend playing as mama raptor defeats me. I should have drugged mama early and often.
Found this over rated. Was thinking about it for about 10 years, finally found somebody selling it for $15. We played it once and said “that’s it? “Sold. Two player games have improved a lot since this came out. Case in point: match of the century, Watergate, Seize Rome in 20 minutes.
I liked it but I got rid of it for the same reasons : too unbalanced and rules too complex to teach to new players for them to enjoy the first plays. Such a shame because the concept is very cool and the game feels really unique
Definitely a gateway game haha! Bgg has raptor complexity 0.2 more than Ticket to ride, 0.15 more than carcassone, and 0.27 LESS than catan. So I'm not alone in thinking this! I mean what constitutes as a gateway game if this is to complex? Tick tac toe, I spy with my little eye, tag?
You believe any rating on BGG? Even their rankings are messed up. 😉 Ticket to Ride requires you to learn about 4-5 rules in total. Raptor has asymmetrical sides, hidden bluffing, multiple actions purchased by points, 9 different action cards per player that are different. The game is still light, but all that is too much that any person brand new to the hobby should need to go through.
Great game, sad to see it go but understand the circumstances, as I might have to do the same eventually. I love this game, but my wife doesn't like the theme, she gets upset that the scientist are taking babies away.
great video and I understand why you had to let it go. 2 player assymetric..asymmetric... possibly unbalanced... this is the reason I never grabbed it in the first place

The lack of any plays of it hurt it for me. 2 player only is a tricky sell.

I went through this. Only it was every non-solo had to be a Top 10 or family weight. Sold/traded like 100+ games
It is still decent, just I'd rather play other 2 player games.
I think my brother and SIL will really enjoy this one. Maybe will gift it this Christmas.

Introduced to my 11 year old daughter today. We were up and running in about 5 minutes.
How many games do you play together though and what side was she? There are exceptions but the norm is that this isn't gateway level.
Fair point, we play a lot of games. She was raptors.

I hope one of these days in the near future Luke becomes The Glued-Back-Together Meeple.
I'll only break again somewhere else!
Where did your red raven ancient world go? I don’t see it back there. Don’t tell you got rid of it?!?
It's on shelf below other Ryan games I believe.
Is this really how you store Raptor? :O No baggies?
I don't think it needs them other than the cards really, or maybe I recorded it before I packed it up for postage. Can't remember! 😂

:'D haha I see her point though.
Tell her they are being taken to be cuddled.
