The psychology of leadership is a mess, says Jordan Peterson, because it's clouded by "management idiot speak." One example? A leader's job isn't to motivate people; it's to tap into people's sense of purpose. Motivation is the byproduct.
Lead your team like a free society, not a dictatorship. Based on developmental psychologist Jean Piaget's observations, Peterson emphasizes the importance of an equilibrated state, which is "a situation that's set up by two or more people where everyone is participating in the state voluntarily." Authoritarian-style leadership ("Do this or else") is a terrible way to run a team.
Good leadership means finding people who want to contribute. Otherwise, says Peterson, "the enforcement costs are so high that the free society will outcompete the authoritarian society across time."

JORDAN PETERSON:
Jordan B. Peterson, raised and toughened in the frigid wastelands of Northern Alberta, has flown a hammer-head roll in a carbon-fiber stunt-plane, explored an Arizona meteorite crater with astronauts, and built a Kwagu'l ceremonial bighouse on the upper floor of his Toronto home after being invited into and named by that Canadian First Nation. He's taught mythology to lawyers, doctors and business people, consulted for the UN Secretary General, helped his clinical clients manage depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and schizophrenia, served as an adviser to senior partners of major Canadian law firms, and lectured extensively in North America and Europe. With his students and colleagues at Harvard and the University of Toronto, Dr. Peterson has published over a hundred scientific papers, transforming the modern understanding of personality, while his book Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief revolutionized the psychology of religion. His latest book is 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos.

JORDAN PETERSON: I suppose this touches on the psychology of leadership too-which is a mess, by the way.
Well, what's the fundamental characteristic of a leader? Here's one: A leader is someone who knows where he or she is going. Well that would be the first thing, is like, how are you going to lead unless you have a destination?
Okay. Well a destination implies an ethic. And then you need to be able to communicate that. And you communicate your destination with a story. Now if I want to motivate people-and that's not the right way to think about it, because you shouldn't want to motivate people. That's management idiot speak, that is-what you should so is figure out something that's worth doing, that you really think is worth doing. Something that you would actually commit a substantial proportion of your life to. And you should have deep reasons for pursuing it. And then if you're a leader, well first of all you have that established, but the second is that you can communicate that, okay, and you communicate that in a manner that also appeals to other people's sense of purpose. And so you'd say to someone, like if I wanted to move forward with you on an enterprise, I would have to say, "Well here's the purpose of the enterprise and here's the reasons that it's not only eminently justifiable but more justifiable than anything else we could be doing at the same time." And then I'd have to say, "Well here's what's in it for me, and here's what's in it for you. And here's why the two of us together can further the enterprise and further what's in it for you and further what's in it for me."
And then you have a situation there that Piaget, Jean Piaget, the developmental psychologist, called an equilibrated state. So an equilibrated state is a situation that's set up by two or more people where everyone is participating in the state voluntarily. So when he got that - he derived that notion in part by looking at how children set up games. So if children are going to set up a pretend game, what they do is they negotiate a little narrative, to begin with. It's almost like they generate a little play and they assign everyone their parts, and then they manifest the play, and that's how they think. But everyone has to accept their part voluntarily, right, or the game won't continue. Now Piaget's ethical claim, ethical analytic claim, was that a game everyone plays voluntarily is more sustainable and productive than one the people have to be forced to play. And that was his fundamental dist...

Great about appealing to other people's sense of purpose. Get them to believe in your mission and they will naturally follow you.
You don't get them to believe in your mission.
They believe in their mission!
What you do as a leader is you articulate what they are already believing. And what they are already believing happens to resonate with what you are believing which is no wonder when we imagine that we all have the same needs partly in very different forms of expression.
Of course what they are already believing might be a little map of the world, a fragmented part of the overarching vision that you and them are resonating with.
It could be something like an ancient, archetypal dream. In that case your mission is an outgrowth of something much deeper, which you are acting out and you happen to be the leader because you're understanding it better than anybody else in your community.
So by articulating it you also help them identify and integrate the unknown, which can manifest itself in an uncomfortable memory, bodily sensations, confusion and powerlessness.
By that your relationship to the unknown, to the chaos becomes a source of power, growth, self-discovery, meaningful contribution and a meaningful life.

Or it could be that he's a misogynist and has no desire to give a truthful recount of the history of womans rights? Maybe it's that he's cynic disguised as an intellect? @@DudeRevolution Well to be honest I chose not to defend Peterson because for one, I haven't proof read all his work and neither am I fully aware of the works of Jung. I don't think it would've been a productive conversation. However, I would like to say that although I don't know how much you've been willing to uncover and understand Jordan's work, your claims and reasoning on him being misogynistic and cynical seem incredibly low fetched.
He's been countlessly accused and attacked by these falsifiable claims in the past, you can even watch interviewers first handly completely misinterpret and twist what he says that it's laughable. I'm not only talking about his Cathy Newman interview but many of his appearances in interviews and articles. Majority of the false claims have been made by mainstream outlets to appease to their buying audiences. It's happened so often now that it's painful to witness the constant poor and partisan reporting. That's what I find appalling, and so I decided to further understand this man by other means. I'd advise everyone to educate themselves on where his claims come from and precisely what he's saying.
As far as I'm aware he hasn't said anything that comes off the way you describe him - at least not after you get over the initial bluntness of the way he often responds.
Well then, I guess I came out to defend him after all, but for the reason that his man is heavily misrepresented it's sickening.

I like the way Jordan Peterson seamlessly connects the individual conscience with large social objectives. Leadership often fails when we look at people as collectives and start imposing common rules on them. But each life is different and each person has goals in their life. To appeal to individual sense of purpose & build on a harmonious plan for their entire lives of which work is just a part is the answer.

There is so much wisdom packed into this 7 minute video I can hardly stand it.
I’ve been spending a lot of time the last few years thinking and reading about leadership and management, but this brilliantly shows that leadership is really not that complicated:
1. Find something that’s worth pursuing
2. Find a compelling way to communicate it
3. That’s it. There’s no third step, stop reading! Stop overcomplicating it!

JP is on point as usual. Unless you know where you are going and can effectively lead and motivate others to follow you on the journey and create a compelling reason why it is hard to make effective change as a leader. Showing your team how to fulfil their own self of purpose is key.
The US Army's definition of leadership is "To influence others by using purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization. Just food for thought.

@TheExplorer it's awesome that you are able to use every privilege to which the United States military can be directly and indirectly attributed of protecting to say such things. Instead of focusing on how many people who have been killed let's calculate the number of people who were saved, still living and all of their decendants because of the United States military. I will be waiting for your calculation. I'll give you a hint... It's going to be a far larger number than millions. Are mistakes made very much so but when you are pretty much the only country willing to do anything then most of them will be yours. And it's not as if they're not trying to reduce unintentional deaths. That's why they contracted Google to make a better AI system for drones so that they were more precise and accurate reducing risk to innocent people. But Google employees rebelled. I have news for you that's not going to stop the military using drones it's only going to stop them from using more precise and accurate ones. So as far as I'm concerned all those Google employees who protested and got the company to cancel the contract are just as responsible for any deaths from drones that were unintentional. You have the knowledge and the capability to save lives by making them smarter and more accurate. You're active refusal to do so makes you just as guilty.

I don't know why they hâte it, but he is not saying (even basically) that libéral leadership is good, and fasist is bad.
Basically, he explain that to be a successful leader you have to, at least, invite to people to follow you to a place you know that is good for you and them.

Good stuff! I had the idea that empires (eg British Empire) were able to continually expand because of an equilibrated state involving the government, the clergy, the military, the merchants, the people, the monarchy who all had a motivating “what’s in it for me?” Motivator. When some of the factions started falling away, growth of the empire slowed to a stop. It seems that Thailand (and possibly Japan) managed to avoid being assimilated by undermining and turning certain of these factions against each other.

Sure, I'll give it a good faith shot. Peterson was mostly a forgettable academic crank who had been denied tenure at Harvard and was toiling on relative obscurity in Canadian academia until he found his niche, which was mostly "owning" young underclassmen in his courses who asked to be called by their preferred pronouns. He then went on a global speaking tour to talk about how he's being censored, and continuously lied about public policy that he personally disagreed with. He cloaks this behavior by publishing books telling people to make their bed or be good leaders (like this video), and that's just enough cover for his often cultish fans to point to in his defense.
TL;DR: None of the good things Peterson brings to the table are at all unique to his work, and giving him a global platform scales all his more vicious beliefs and biases.

Also, I love how JP haters always call him racist/homophobe/nazi *without ever* providing any actual reference to something he said. That is great and on point. I am also really curious about another aspect of organization which is politics and struggle of power. Many people might believe in the same vision and the same overall direction but politics is something always at play in any type and size of the organization. Where someone wants to have more influence and power over people and resources.
As a leader how you cope with that? even when you have done your job to have a clear vision, and communicated it to the people and have right the "right" people on board who believe in that and also believe that this job and the vision of the company can help them to achieve their own lives goals.
How you handle that power struggle within the organization and keep everyone on track and also make sure as a leader people don't challenge your leadership every other day and disrupt the flow of progress and hurt the quality of what ever you are producing.

He specialized in the study and treatment of addictions (not only drugs but addictive behavior in general). I personally just got into his work, not so long ago, so I don't feel really comfortable/apt enough to give you a resume But I invite you to listen to the many presentations & interviews he got on here, or/and read his books if you are interested. I picked one up yesterday but didn't started reading it yet ^^ I really loved his lectures tho.

I don't think he is associating himself or approching the problem with any ideology(ism). I would be careful not to dismissed him & what he's saying by simple possibility of association to marxism or any ism. He seems to be making sure that his statements are backed-up by the latest scientific/medical studies & express ,often, that he's not comfortable speculating or anwsering questions that are over extending his knowledge. Interesting approach to leadership. Having taken over several enterprises as a "hired gun" the first step was to always overcome the negative inertia that was put in place by any predecessors.
That is why you start with a vision and mission.

@@SAM-ft9jd you know what I find weird about those that target his apologetics? They don't seem to note that he's taking a Jungian view of his faith as a cultural archetype; he's not trying to justify the bullshit of the institution or the faithful by rather the potential value of the abrahamic symbols and archetypes for the collective unconscious.
I don't necessarily agree with Peterson on this but his detractors don't seem to grasp the argument at all. They have this total misunderstanding of his argument that leads their rebuttals totally off the mark; no matter how sound the internal logic of the counter argument may be. I'd argue that his apologetics make the same mistake as Karl Jung; namely that the common western archetypes are not the sole archetypes that effect a individual living in the west; Even more so in the information age!

I think he's misrepresented because he is deliberately misunderstood. His ideological opponents disagree with him before he speaks, then listen only for things they can disagree with, and find things they can use to misrepresent him. They don't necessarily do this dishonestly.
It's like if a farmer went to survey some land, and came back and said the land was unusable because there is a forest there. Then they are asked, 'were there fruit trees there', or 'were the trees softwood or hardwood?' The farmer responds: 'I didn't see any trees, just a big stupid forest.'
They don't hear what he's saying, they just disagree and find things they disagree with. Neither context nor content actually matter.

Since using the term "notification squad" typically refers to people who follow someone for the purpose of disliking or trying to suppress a video. This is not an opinion about JP at all, but intellectual honesty remains important to the rest of us too.
@@KeatrithAmakiir I would argue that term notification squad generaly refers to people that have notifications on for the purpose of watching the video or certain channel as soon as it comes out - their motives can vary. In this case people with notifications on weren't either happy with the content or with the fact that JP is featured on big think again.

I've seen many comments calling him overrated, or something similar. Haven't seen one person give a logical reason. Tells you a lot.
Would you listen if they did give a logical reason or have you already made up your mind in advance?
@@mattd8725 I have my opinions of Peterson but I'd be willing to listen to why people seem to despise him. I've watched dozens of hours of his lectures and interviews, so I have a pretty solid idea of what his views are etc. Just don't get the hate. But I'd be willing to listen
@@billystudholme1499 The first problem is that you appear to buy his line that the people who oppose him simply hate him and that he is a victim of their manipulations and falsehoods. If you can first accept the logical fallacy of this then other dominoes start to tumble.

@@billystudholme1499 Can't you see that it's not a logical statement in itself that it "tells you a lot" that you cannot see logical arguments against him? What is it supposed to tell us a lot of?
That it is not possible to make any logical argument against Peterson? He himself often does not use logical arguments, instead preferring fables and other sorts of story telling. In that case I can sort of agree that logic might not be the best tool as going full vulcan mind grip on children's stories about animals is not always the right approach.
Is it supposed to tell us that that people who dislike Peterson are unable to use any sort of structured logic? I suppose that this is what you intended but it does not logically stand up unless you can prove that logic is a tool only used by Peterson supporters or people who have never heard of Peterson. Perhaps the logic is only that you don't see this criticism which might be because they have more collegiate venues to discuss logic in that you are not a part of or because they are suppressed in some way. But that can't be right as it's Peterson and his supporters who are brutally suppressed.
The option I offer is that you have problems finding and perceiving arguments based on logic because of your own limitations as an individual. This seems like a more logical option since it doesn't make such sweeping assumptions about large groups of people and can be tested. But since this would not "tell us a lot" about Peterson's critics but only about you it would falsify the logic of your statement. It would focus things back on your personal responsibility which is a very Petersonian position to take.

And he's a hypocrite. A staunch defender of religion who here says structures based on fear and punishment don't work...and literally says being "overlorded" in a hierarchy is not gonna work well.

Acknowledging that this is very difficult rounds off the argument nicely. My experience of some forty years in various organisations tells me that an awful lot of people in positions of leadership haven't thought deeply about it at all. It's just another rung on the corporate ladder, an opportunity to have a go, a chance to get a nice badge. Which is a shame.

@Dinkelstein Kerman - I don't dislike Peterson, but he says so much nonsense about nothing, that's not being articulate, that's just filler for the sake of filler. My biggest annoyance with Peterson, isn't about what he is(n't) saying, it's the fact that I've rarely seen him just flat out say "I know nothing about that subject", no matter how weak his position is, he tries to assert himself as an expert on many subjects far outside his field of expertise and it's clear that he doen't have much footing in those discussions. This isn't just a problem with Peterson, it's a problem with many academics, I have far more respect for academics who dare say "I don't know" than someone who comes up with a longwinded argument with dubious credibility.
@Dinkelstein Kerman - Well I have one such example, I can't quite put my finger on which debate it was, I think it may have been his debate with Sam Harris in Vancouver., he said something akin to old religious teachings and stories having influenced our biological evolution through a collective unconscious, which to any evolutionary biologist is a bunch of pseudoscientific hogwash, because that's not how evolution works. I find his approach paticularly lacking when it comes to religion and evolution, it isn't grounded in science, at least not in evolutionary science, when religion and biology overlaps that's one area where I get the distinct impression that Peterson lacks fundamental understandings of how those processes work.

That's kinda why I don't like JP... nothing I've ever heard him say or read of his has ever been particularly new or interesting, and I haven't read basic self help books or anything of the sort. I've read a lot of comments saying 'yeah, this is basic stuff based on X', and I'm inclined to think they're right, but people just jerk themselves off to him like he's the second coming. I think one of my favourite bits of wisdom from him is that it's pointless to compare pain, or struggles, it's just a pointless game to play which, btw is something he does a lot when 'destroying' feminists. But like I said it's just a basic tidbit of wisdom. I think he's not even close to as smart as he thinks he is. Good on him for making a career being an internet psychologist though, there are waaaaay worse pseudo intellectuals people idolise for god only knows what reason.

All Jordan Peterson haters never bring arguments. Maybe thats because those haters are unable to fight his arguments with reason and logic. Its easier to just call someone names, when one doesnt have much between his/her ears.
There is plenty of footage online where you can hear Peterson contradict his own ideas and also question his own ideas when interviewers ask certain questions. There is no better man to argue against his own nebulous ideology than Peterson.
All JP fans never bring arguments. Maybe that's because those fans are unable to understand that many of his arguments are word salad that has nothing to do with the real world or reason and logic. It's easier to just call someone a hater and never thing about the fact that some people might have a point in hating and calling out a charlatan who wants to come out as deep and intellectual. Yeah, it's good to hear the humane perspective rather than the boring economic terms that are far away from defining the reality of daily life and human psychology. People you lead have to had already been organised their life before having an impact on your businness. My only critique is about the subjectivity of the argument.
I have one remark. Some people are surviving due to past trauma or circumstances. If you are surviving, there's no big life plan, there's just surviving. I've been in that situation and my job to me was just about being able to pay my bills, buy food and staying alive.
