Nice preview! I'm so happy they really went with the third person perspective. It's really important to a lot of people. I know I'll be playing in TPP 99% of the time. And the fact that they've been improving on things based on the community remarks really sings praises to them. I'm particularly excited for this game now! Just wish it was a longer game, but hopefully if you're going for full completion it'll last a lot more than 30h!
Matt, please play the Pillars of Eternity games before the full release of Avowed. The games are amazing and scratch a similar itch to the early dragon age games
I'm definitely getting the premium edition upgrade after your preview! This game is going to need the attention it deserves. I'm excited for it and can't wait to play it! Keep up the honesty!
I love how Matty reviews games. He understands how we all play them. Not like the major companies where they try and squeeze everything into a 2 minute video and miss out loads of important details.
It's been a while since I've seen anything regarding Avowed and I'm really happy to see you can play it third person. I know a lot of people like first person games, but for me it removes at least 20% of the fun.
It is always best to wait and see. Previews and early reviews don't always tell the whole story. As for me, I would have preferred something like the two Pillars of Eternity games. I don't like action combat and can only tolerate it if it is extremely easy, so as reviews start to appear, I'll be looking closely to see if there is a super-easy difficulty level that turns combat into a non-issue. Naturally, I was disappointed to see Pillars of Eternity morphed into an action game, but if combat can be effectively bypassed, I might enjoy other aspects of the game. Dragon Age: The Veilguard may have its problems, but its accessibility and difficulty customization are about the best I've seen. Seeing that combat could be completely nerfed is what finally convinced me to buy it and give it a try. Avowed looks like it might be better than Veilguard in many other ways. I'm happy to see that the game is using a proper dialogue system, as opposed to Veilguard, which uses a dumbed down Fallout 4-style system. Hopefully, the writing will be better too, but we'll have to wait and see on that. Out of the big February releases (assuming that they all release on schedule), Avowed is the only one I'm likely to follow closely, though I see that a new Legend of Heroes game is coming, so I'll probably take a look at that too. The combat system in Kingdom Come: Deliverance is far too frustrating for me, so the sequel is almost certainly a game I should pass on. In March, I'll take a close look at Tales of the Shire.
Still seems like a mistake for them to have moved this to February of next year. KCD2 and Monster Hunter are way more anticipated than Avowed for me... so Avowed is pretty much automatically going onto the wait for a sale list and into the backlog.
Yep, totally this. The demographic of this game are the same kind of gamers who probably will play KCD2 (though one could argue that KCD2 players will not play Avowed, but Avowed players are more inclined to play KCD2 too). Late January should be the way to go.
It’s fine, it’s only competing with Kingdom Comes Deliverance 2. Monster Hunter is an acquired taste. I for one tried to get into Monster Hunter but couldn’t and found it boring and repetitive. However, most people will buy Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and play Avowed on Gamepass at the same time. Which is what I’m going to do.
It's the opposite for me. Avowed looks much more interesting to me than KCD2. Don't get me wrong, loved the first game, but Warhorse's track record tells me that KCD2 will need some work after launch before it's ready for showtime proper. High fantasy just appeals to me more than realistic fantasy, but no doubt I will be getting both eventually.
@@wlot28 tbh that's literally every first person fantasy RPG/RPG-lite game that's come and will continue to come for generations. They're even talking about "scrolls-likes" in the indie community now lol.
@@wlot28As a Elder Scrolls lover who was at Skyrim's midnight launch, Pillars of Eternities lore and world is just honestly imo more complex and impressive. The cities alone shit on elder scrolls, but the depth of the factions motivations are superior, there is actual colonialism going on rather than just Nords mad at an Empire...an Empire that doesn't really do much governing in game, whereas you can see how all the different governments function in Pillars firsthand. Matty and many TH-camrs (sometimes not even gaming channels) use Oblivion and Skyrim music in their videos because it's nostalgic and goat tier.
@@Azoedud Honestly, "more of an RPG" will completely depend on what you're interested in. Skyrim doesn't go deep on character Interaction or choice and consequence. It does go deep on exploration, questing and creating your own character / story. Skyrim is also huge in terms of content. So this game might beat Skyrim in some areas (that Skyrim wasn't designed to do) while remaining in Skyrim's massive shadow as this will be a lunch size experience compared to Skyrim's five course dinner.
Now I'm really starting to look forward to this game. Never had any hard doubts but it still helps to receive a little reassurance. Not really worried too much about them still optimizing; I suspect most dev's save optimization for last and when a delay happens the first thing they want to do is add a few new features and then optimize again. In any and all case, good vid
I agree about the design of the characters, I don't like it either. But we'll see. I'm definitely excited about Avowed and much more than about Kingdom Come 2, even though KC is made by developers from my country. It simply doesn't have magic, so Avowed wins without competition.
Thank you for showing me that 3rd person is an option in this. Its actually my preference in games over first except for when I am shooting otherwise I prefer 3rd and this is the first I have heard anyone talk about that being an option in this.
Can't wait to play this🔥🔥. It sucks that they delayed it to february. I just think they picked the wrong month. I know they chose February before any other company chose that month. I wish they could move the date, but I don't want them to 😂😂😂
This is probably the best slice of gameplay I've seen so far. Previous previews looked way too high fantasy bright but I can see myself enjoying this at least a little bit. I'll give it a shot on gamepass.
Im dissapointed no collectors ed for avowed or a physical disc but im still getting this buying it day 1 or day -5 as early access etc. this preview has sold me even harder. Cant wait.
I was excited when I heard Obsidian was making their own version of "Elder Scrolls" and I still am, this game gets better with every new preview I watch and can't wait to get this bad boy! After Bethesda's constant disappointment over the years I really hope Obsidian ends up filling that need of open world RPGs that Bethesda can't fulfill anymore.
This isn't a fully open world game. Neither is it a massive experience. Starfield might have failed in its literal exploration of the world(s). But between all the factions and side quests it was still a massive game with tons of fun content (albeit mixed in with boring stuff like the 1000 procedural planets). This game will be a lunch sized experience compared to the elder scrolls' five course dinner extravaganza. The way I see it, it's cool that this game exists and that we'll eventually get an elder scrolls 6 as well.
As someone who likes playing melee in fantasy games I am still concerned with how the melee combat feels. But since I have game pass Ill be playing it anyways. The magic combat looks really fun. I will say that animation for the reload on the musket looks rough so hopefully not all the guns share that reload animation. As for the aesthetic and world design, I cant help but be a little disappointed that they didn't go the route of a gritty world like I thought they were after the initial trailer. Still, the art work and the colourful world look good. Probably fits a fantasy game more than the gritty art style would. Overall I'm still excited to play it.
The game looks waaay better here than in all the trailer videos. I wish they never released that initial trailer ages ago. It was a more ambitious style and clearly they had to scale back. It was very jarring for a lot of people seeing the seemingly generic, colorful, run of the mill world that so many games seem to have after seeing the darker more cinematic vibes of the initial trailer. Hopefully they can polish this up and make it feel relatively big and immersive. I’m hoping to scratch my Oblivion itch. I’m happy you can switch between first and third person. I use first person most of the time but like he said, it’s nice to pop out and admire your fantasy drip and run and look at more of your surroundings.
"Rubberbanding" is not the right term for starting a game off in a linear fashion while you get your bearings and follow the tutorials. You're thinking of "handholding"
This is actually looking way better than I expected. Love that you can use firearms in a fantasy game too, though the hyperspeed of the reloads is kind of jarring and comical. Kind of wish the game had a unique firearm type in its lore that could explain the fast reload. Not like modern bullets by any means, but maybe something like a breach-loaded percussion-cap kind of firearm that sits between modern and more primitive firearms - like a more archaic form of a gun like the Swedish Kammlader from the 1850s.
Nice! I'm happy you can straight up switch to 3rd person that's cool. It looks a lot better than it has I'm really excited for this one. Still sad is not coming until February and it's coming out near MHW.
I actually think it might be better for Matty to NOT play PoE, so we can get his reaction to the game unspoiled as to the major lore reveal at the end of the first game. In-universe, only a few people are aware of it, though that might have changed somewhat by the end of the second game, and I can't imagine it doesn't have an impact in Avowed. Similarly, the reason the Godlikes have mostly disappeared is known to people who played the second game, but I'm not sure if it's a mystery in-universe.
For sure the game has potential. There is an audience for it, I am just worried 70 bucks might be a bit too much for it since they did advertise it that its more of a AA type game.
I'm only interested in this game because Obsidian made it and because it's in the Pillars of Eternity world. If it wasn't it probably wouldn't be on my radar. Here's hoping it'll be a pleasant surprise and not a dumb mistake i make.
I'm a big fan of Pillars of eternity so even though the combat is different, just getting another game in that world with its beefy diologue and lore, I can't wait.
While my days of preordering are done I will take time to watch some review vids on the game. I do love the PoE universe. So I am cautiously optimistic for this one.
Impressed by what you're saying and showing. I was optimistic but I wasnt excited necessarily. Seeing this, it looks like a proper wRPG and day 1 buy for me. Graphically it seems very mediocre but that could be the video quality. Not that graphics are all that important to me. Its just that the graphics looked a lot better in the dev previews.
Delaying it this year because a lot of games are coming out doesn’t make sense because they then decided to move it to February when a ton of huge games are coming out as well
I mean, they chose february before any other company chose february. There were the only game in that month 😂😂 i think it would be cool if they could move it to January? Maybe March but I don't want them to get hurt. Cause they delay a game again
@@LordMuzhy Really what other games? Because the only other game I am interested in that comes out that month is KCD2 and I am torn on which I will play first, but I will play both for sure.
@ Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza, Civilization 7 and Kingdom come Deliverance 2. That’s a lot of established IP’s with big followings that will take the attention away from Avowed specially in the content creator/online space
The thumbnail reminded me that "They Cooked" could mean a flippant way of saying "They ARE Cooked" (bad, failure) or "They HAVE Cooked" (good, impressive success) and the fact it could be either annoys me lol
I'm more hyped for KCD2, but this is sounding good! I'm definitely gonna check it out on Gamepass, hopefully I'll like it enough to just buy it. Those 2 games plus Fable coming too. Gonna be a good year for RPGs
If they make it open instead of zoned, I'll be excited for it, otherwise I'm waiting for it to show up on sale. I'm also hoping it doesn't have a lot of the same problems as Outer Worlds.
A lot of the animations are really janky... everything else looks good, but didnt they delay this game to work on the combat and didnt even try to smooth out the animations? The bow and firearms specifically.
I really hope Matty you will play pillars of eternity 1 & 2. They are amazing games and stories. It will give depth to the world of eora where Avowed takes place.
Glad to hear your updated thoughts on Avowed! I'm actually kind of looking forward to this one, and I'm glad to hear that it's at least headed in the right direction.
It looks decent, I'll probably check it out at some point as long as it's not a disaster. However, I'm still disappointed the super dark and gritty vibe of the first trailer isn't representative of the actual game. The lighter tone just doesn't hook me personally. Makes everything feel less serious and consequential.
Its just the color. In real life the dark ages still had color, didnt make the things haappening there less horrible. The original trailer looked more like some areas in the original game that takes place in Dyrwood so they probably werent fully settled in how the land in Avowed looked on the first trailer, just that they were making a Pillars of Eternity first person rpg
the thing is this look is actually more faithful to the franchise. If they did go with the gritty look, people would say it's abandoning the spirit of the series chasing something else
@@RuthwikRao Fair enough, I don't necessarily blame them regarding the faithfulness to the series angle. I guess as someone that hasn't played POE and doesn't have an attachment to it, I found it a bit disappointing. I also think it's fair to have a different vibe for different games in a series, especially since it's a different genre, with a partially different audience. Many other series have pulled that off. I'll have to play it though of course.

Im dissapointed no collectors ed for avowed or a physical disc but im still getting this buying it day 1 or day -5 as early access etc. this preview has sold me even harder. Cant wait.
No physical they can keep it
I was excited when I heard Obsidian was making their own version of "Elder Scrolls" and I still am, this game gets better with every new preview I watch and can't wait to get this bad boy!
It looks like Pillars of Eternity 2 (which is part of the same franchise as Avowed), which i cant recommend it enough
Isn't it railroading?
'Railroading' is the term, not 'handholding'.
I think more games could use a cold open or vertical slice. Look at RE4, 10 minutes in and you're hooked. Immersion is never broken.
@Blisterdude123 pretty sure the term is "running a train."
@@wyliesalimeno9602 lol not where I'm from
I'm utterly starved from a lack of Scrolls-like games (Soulslikes don't count, at all), so this is like mana from the heavens for me.
Really hope this game is good, there's so few rpg's like this being made.
After starfield, outlaws, and dragon disappointed im sooo cautiously optimistic about this
This preview vid sold me on this game more than any of the trailers have, not sure why but I'm pretty hyped now.
I’m surprised I thought it would look worse. I’m definitely watching it more closely now.
Nice! I'm happy you can straight up switch to 3rd person that's cool. It looks a lot better than it has I'm really excited for this one. Still sad is not coming until February and it's coming out near MHW.
5:03 The reload animation for the musket is kind of ridiculously fast 🤣 I hope that's not how it looks in the final game.
It can be a stat or a skill... That made the animation faster.
@@JoaoVictor-wb7zzIt isn’t a skill. That’s just the default reload speed hahah
@@MrMattyPlays that's crazy fast for a default lol
I actually think it might be better for Matty to NOT play PoE, so we can get his reaction to the game unspoiled as to the major lore reveal at the end of the first game. In-universe, only a few people are aware of it, though that might have changed somewhat by the end of the second game, and I can't imagine it doesn't have an impact in Avowed. Similarly, the reason the Godlikes have mostly disappeared is known to people who played the second game, but I'm not sure if it's a mystery in-universe.
We just had a thanksgiving luncheon at work here. My farts are LETHAL
Don't miss Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, you need it for the lore and the story, same one as avowed, same universe. And amazing games.
One of the games I’m actually excited for
For sure the game has potential. There is an audience for it, I am just worried 70 bucks might be a bit too much for it since they did advertise it that its more of a AA type game.
That February release window is sheer insanity.
You expected Microsoft to make a sane publishing decision? HA
I mean wasn’t it made before shadows was pushed back and deliverance set a release date though?
@@reedk2402 And Monster Hunter Wilds 10 days later.
I'm only interested in this game because Obsidian made it and because it's in the Pillars of Eternity world. If it wasn't it probably wouldn't be on my radar. Here's hoping it'll be a pleasant surprise and not a dumb mistake i make.
Love what I seeing, pretty hype. A quick toggle between third and first person would really be the cherry on top of the cake.
I'm a big fan of Pillars of eternity so even though the combat is different, just getting another game in that world with its beefy diologue and lore, I can't wait.
Looks like the delay was the right call. More polish is always good.
Im very excited for this game!!
Pillars of Etenity world in 1st/3rd person RPG. A must try I think if they manage to make it blanced and work in med-tier PCs without serious bugs.
If this doesnt get delayed or released earlier, it will be swallowed up by the massive games coming out in Feb
That magic gameplay looks soooo cool.
Guns! Nice, for sure making a Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III build :D
shooting arrrows on water beetles for leveling, just like you would shoot arrows on mudcrabs... Lol looks like familiar terrain
@@The_Maf1athere’s so many games that are much bigger coming out that month that will unfortunately bury it
@@LordMuzhy true
@@LordMuzhy Really what other games? Because the only other game I am interested in that comes out that month is KCD2 and I am torn on which I will play first, but I will play both for sure.
@ Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza, Civilization 7 and Kingdom come Deliverance 2. That’s a lot of established IP’s with big followings that will take the attention away from Avowed specially in the content creator/online space
We've had so much slop in the past year. I really hope this one is good.
I hope so well Stalker 2 is good bro
PSA: vertical slices or curated previews should not be a basis for giving them your money before the game comes out.
Matty, friend... you really should give Pillars of Eternity a shot before Avowed releases. :>
Edit: At least the first one.
I'm really hyped for this, I hope it's good 🙂
Graphics look better now
I wish Veilguard used this graphics style/tone. This is more serious/medieval
The thumbnail reminded me that "They Cooked" could mean a flippant way of saying "They ARE Cooked" (bad, failure) or "They HAVE Cooked" (good, impressive success) and the fact it could be either annoys me lol
Honestly, I can't keep up with Gen Z slang anymore.
Or is it Gen Alpha? Damn I'm a Millennial I shouldn't feel this old..
This, KC2 and MH wilds are gonna make for a great beginning of 2025 I hope.
In fact it basically looks like a mix of Skyrim and Baldur's Gate III
I really hope Matty you will play pillars of eternity 1 & 2. They are amazing games and stories. It will give depth to the world of eora where Avowed takes place.
I've been looking forward to this way more than anything Bethesda has cooking. Especially after Starfield.
respect starfield
I'm actually excited to play it a bit more now
This game seems fun. Jumping is really tacky though😂
Mage with a gun sounds wild lol
Alakablam
AvadacaBOOM
I'm looking forward to this. Im not expecting it to be a smash hit or anything but i think its gonna be solid.
I wouldn't mind a menu toggle for third person instead of a hotkey, makes it more immersive.
My biggest concern is it's comming out very close to kingdom come 2. I hope those games don't steal from eachother.
Glad to hear your updated thoughts on Avowed! I'm actually kind of looking forward to this one, and I'm glad to hear that it's at least headed in the right direction.
Funny, when a RPG does enemies reacting to guns better then a shooter.
I can’t wait for this i really enjoyed the outerworlds i even started another playthrough on ps5. So i know ill enjoy this
Well… I did subscribe to you… then I saw the 5 min sponsored bit…
I only watch TH-camrs who don’t say
“Buy my product”
Good luck man
Excited for this and Kingdom come deliverance 🎉 im fine with third person mode since in Elder scrolls I only used it while i was walking around
It looks decent, I'll probably check it out at some point as long as it's not a disaster. However, I'm still disappointed the super dark and gritty vibe of the first trailer isn't representative of the actual game. The lighter tone just doesn't hook me personally. Makes everything feel less serious and consequential.
Yeah it looks too much like the cartoonish style that the Outer Worlds had.
@@Sir_Robin_of_Camelot I don't disagree. I would have preferred the original look as well, but the direction changed pretty early on.
After seeing this video I'm definitely more excited than I was and honestly I don't really care about 3rd person view
Eagerly waiting for this game, really really hoping it's good!
