I know a lot of people didn't like the Outer Worlds, but I loved it and Avowed looks like it has a similar structure with how the open zones work. However it definitely looks like Avowed is going to be much longer, which is expected now that they have Microsoft funding them.

I wasn't excited for this game after hearing they pretty much changed the whole thing years ago but looking at this gameplay it actually looks pretty good. Gonna check it out when it comes out.
Such a shame they changed the art style though. It just looks so generic now like so many other games. It looks to clean and colourful if you know what I mean.
Id been so hit an miss on this game. this video has sold me. This is my kind of game. however I do hope some of the loot is random be it stat or items, I hate it when everyone who opens the same chest gets same gear, sure its a single player rpg, but you want to have stories to tell with friends and talk back and forth.
I don't remember where I seen/heard this, but I think your own unique enchantments and augmentations can get you some really unique items, the devs said someone came up with a customized weapon that they never thought of in all of their testing of the weapon system.
It seems like some of the smaller issues had with the game might be related to the transition form a CRPG system to a action RPG, and maybe some needed setup for the Eora setting for folks who are not coming from the Pillars of Eternity games: combat numbers, UI setup, the facial/cranial growths that indicate a godlike person in the setting, etc. I'm glad to hear it's shaping to be a great gaming experience cause I was initially bummed that they shifted direction to a Skyrim-esque game and I am starting to get more and more excited now!

Only 3 actually, unfortunately. The "Godlike" tree is just a base-line default one that everyone unlocks via progressing the MSQ. The classes you pick individual skills from are Fighter, Ranger, Wizard. Although I will say the Wizard tree is rather substantial, and seems to support more playstyles than just 'elemental caster'. But yeah, would have loved more variety here.

I'm super late, but finally getting around to watching. This review makes me really happy, as the biggest project I've been working on is basically this, but co-op/multiplayer, and simpler (indie). I've wanted a game like this that I can play with friends (and maybe strangers) for literal decades, and I can see myself really enjoying Avowed and finding inspiration in it for my own project. Super cool.

It looks wonderfully old-school, which is great news! My interest in it wasn't all that until this latest batch of previews and gameplay videos. Between this, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Titan Quest 2, and Path of Exile 2, the coming 12-18 months are looking real busy.
Yeah, I'll leave this game to the "Modern audience." The pronouns is a dead giveaway that this game is a turd in disguise (just like Veilguard). I'll replay Skyrim 1000× over this any day.
Baffles me to this day how someone can get so worked up about having the ability to freely choose which pronouns to use for a character in a fantasy game. Skyrim is fun though so enjoy 🙂

Lol at the comments about the "woke" stuff. I wonder what it subtracts from the game or from your life that you can't even think to play it as a cis gender person, which, by the way, are also included. It's a freaking game and as a GDR you get to choose to be whoever you want to be, I don't get the big deal you're making about this. People don't dislike 'woke', they dislike virtue signaling and that's the impression a lot of people have of this game and it's staff. A lot of people's game of the year was Metaphor and that was very much a socially aware game. I'm personally most looking forward to Kingdom Come Deliverance, a game panned for it's 'fascist' and 'phobic' director...meanwhile the game has some of the best written gay representation in all of the video games. People just want good games.

I’m hesitant about how many zones there are. You only saw one so I just hope this isn’t like Dragons Dogma 2 where you leave the checkpoint town, thinking “Wow, that was a great starter zone, can’t wait to see the rest of the game!” Only to realize that that was 70% of the game finished.
It's going to be a really small game in terms of RPGs, they're kinda open about it. They said 30-40 hours and keep comparing it to Outer Worlds which was also really small and about the same playtime even if you explored everywhere because the zones were so small.
if you have not play pillars of eternity I highly recommend it. If you like isometric games and a lot of lore and secrets. Love the game and this review is like diving into the old games on an POV.
From what I'm seeing and having explained... it feels like the game is a medieval fantasy version of Metroid Prime : you have large zones to explore, some of it gated behind having some given ability or item then get rewarded for being curious and smart. In MP, it was missile upgrades and energy tanks but in this one, it seems to be good quality loot. And since everything is so condensed, there's less time wasted on traveling (which, depending on your tastes, is either a plus or a minus). I'll look forward to that one.
Obsidian used to be one of my favorite developers, with games like the POE games and Tyranny. But Outer worlds was a terrible disappointment given its mediocrity. And now they seem to have gone full in on this modern audience bs, I'll be avoiding this game regardless of the gameplay and story. I don't want to support any developer that pushes this stuff into their games.
@@machinedieselx4767 Hate to break it to you, but you're the weird one getting so worked up about a free choice in a fantasy game. Normies will play and enjoy the game based on how good the story and gameplay is.

Based on how the world map is laid out, it looks as though it's designed to be expanded with additional zones, probably through DLC releases. The way the map clearly goes outside of the borders, particularly to the north and east, it's very reminiscent of Diablo IV and it's recent addition to the areas for Vessel of Hatred. It's also giving infinite design possibilities, so while Avowed looks like a condensed version of Skyrim, I'd hedge my bet that it will eventually grow to be of similar size or even larger over the years. On that note, if they already have additional areas designed, developed, or in progress, the timing is phenomenal given that Skyrim fans are desperately and impatiently awaiting the launch of Elder Scrolls VI, which is still likely years away (I'm personally anticipating delays given the lack of information at this point).
I haven't been giving Skyrim a chance to be honest and now regret to this day of not trying it, but after seeing Avowed, may I could give this one a shot since it's another new game and Im for trying new things out!
To me it really depends. If it's just selecting that during character creation and there is no other mention of it during the game then whatever if the game is really good. Like I recently started BG3 and I don't mind. But it they then start to have a character creator that doesn't let you create good looking women or angry looking men because of political ideology or if the the identity politics is a selling point for the game or it feels like activism and the game lacks substance then I'm happy to skip. Will wait for post launch reviews
Thank you for being one of the only people actually using their brain and actually watching the gameplay and listening to what the guy says as opposed to saying "huhuhu non-buy-nary".
I don't see an issue until they have an in-game character lecturing about pronoun usage like in Dragon Age Origins Hopefully the character creation screen is the end of it. If so I don't think the game would be 'ruined'
Almost all RPGs have some version or take on real life politics guy. Even JRPGs. Unless you're a kid that doesn't want any politics, violence, sex and drugs in their games, then go play Zelda or Genshin Impact
@@MSPintail Why do you think i am mad? I am not mad. The pronouns/gender politics is a political agenda forced into the game to score brownie points and that shouldn't be in the game at all. It's a fantasy game made to give us escapism from the real world. But that's kind of hard to do if you get these gender politics shoved down your throat.
I know it will sound insane but what really did speak to me in the Pillars franchise was the plethora of weapons. That really struck me as interesting having that many options. I rally like blunt weapons in fantasy rpg's and when it comes to blunt weapons you had 1 handed clubs not a lot of damage but reliable and attack as fast as daggers I think 1 handed flails which had a gimmic of upgrading some attacks (the attack accuracy of the game was a bit complex but the idea was fails are hard to dodge, so they hit more often) 1 handed maces which were better at penetrating armor than other blunt weapons 1 handed military hammers which would deal either blunt or piercing damage which ever was better in the given situation 2 handed poleaxes which would deal either blunt or slashing damage much like the hammers did 2 handed quarter staves which were pretty darn deadly and had extended reach over most other weapons 2 handed morning stars a big ol metal ball on the end of a stick, they had the strongest interrupt stat of any weapon in the game, making it more likely to unterrupt enemies And that's just the weaopns that do blunt damage, there were like nearly 30 weapon types.
Absolutily love the pillars of eternity universe, i found avowed quite expensive , but still wanna buy it at some point in the future. Also, if anyone got the chance, you should check PoE, recomend it very much
Pronouns? Sorry .. I identify as non-buynary. Studios keep pushing DEI one "feature" at a time. As soon as a studio sees that pronouns are 'accepted', they push to the next Microsoft DEI milestone (unattractive/masculine females, random race swaps, cringe fanfic style romances, preachy stories, removal of choice). Much better to let the games fail and focus on indie studios that don't have any agenda other than making a successful game.

I loved Pillars of Eternity. To be able to play a 3D action version of the world is a god send. Don't need a 10/10 greatest and biggest RPG ever, just give me a solid role playing experience!
I love how Obsidian manages to iterate on existing game systems and mechanics, then polishes them up and gives it that little bit of Obsidian flavor. With the likes of Fallout New Vegas, Outer Worlds, and now Avowed, this is the type of polish I would have expected from Bethesda's modern offerings.
This is not the same Obsidian that created New Vegas. Only ONE person from that staff is still at Obsidian. Do not expect this to be anything like New Vegas at all as it’s a completely different team with completely different ideological beliefs and writers.
@@JohnDoe-dr9ff That's fair. Though at least it looks like the DNA from the original team still exists in this game. It certainly looks and plays better than what Bioware did with the drastic shift in tone and RPG mechanics with DA Veilguard.
@ Fair enough. But saying it looks and plays better than Veilguard isn’t exactly a high bar. lol Nowadays I just try and keep my expectations VERY low for games from established development teams. I figure that way I can at hopefully be pleasantly surprised if it’s even borderline decent.
@@JohnDoe-dr9ff I have played a fair bit of Skyrim so this game seems to scratch some of that itch, at least until we get an update of what ES6 is gonna look like at some point. And I do agree that a lot of the legacy dev studios just can't seem to keep up with the times anymore... either refusing to evolve their formula or making such a massive shift in a different direction that it alienates their original fanbase. I do have mixed feelings on the art design of this game, though. For one, it really does resemble DA Veilguard a little bit, but with less Disney-looking character models. I guess this gets a pass, though, since it doesn't quite have a point of reference from a previous game unlike with Veilguard. I've always reiterated that I think Veilguard isn't necessarily a bad game... it's just a bad Dragon Age game.
@ The art design is clunky and over the top with color, similar to Outer Worlds. The women have broad shoulders and square jaws, just like Outer Worlds. The combat moves and looks like Outer Worlds. The dialogue is reminiscent of Outer Worlds (albeit more limited in choices). We do have a reference for this game as it’s the same team that made Outer Worlds, and unfortunately, that game wasn’t exactly well received despite abundant initial praise from people who posted reviews…just like we’re seeing here. The main difference is, this time around, there is far more money being pumped into games pushing…certain ideological beliefs many consumers find irritating, abrasive, and unwanted. It’s also important to note certain individuals at Obsidian have come out directly insulting potential consumers of their game (all white men), proving themselves to be an overly racist studio. I, for one, will not support a racist studio so if Obsidian refuses to fire Matt Hansen and others, I will never buy their products. The more you learn about Matt Hansen and Obsidian’s team, the more disgusted you’ll get (if you are a moral and ethical person, that is). I played Outer Worlds, and it was an average game. It was definitely NOT anywhere near the RPG quality of New Vegas. Even the gameplay was mediocre, certainly not good but not particularly bad either…just barely average and mediocre. If this game is anything like Outer Worlds, which it REALLY appears to resemble, it will be a barely average game that falls short of all this built up praise people are giving it presently. I have VERY low expectations from anything made by Obsidian as all the original staff that created good games there have long since left the company leaving it with a shell of racist, bigoted, less talented, employees and uncreative writers and designers. Maybe Matt will get his wish though, he can finally find a black man to replace him so he can go live in the woods. Maybe after all this time pushing black resumes to the top of the list, he finally found someone to do so. Given that he’s still spreading his nonsense at Obsidian, and Obsidian hasn’t fired him for outright, illegal racism, it’s likely he hasn’t. It’s also important to note, his actions alone have likely opened up Obsidian (and likely Microsoft) to lawsuits for discrimination.
Heard about this game years ago. I've been wanting to get my hands on it for a while. Seeing a person who played the game and has good feedback with fair criticism is a relief. I'm still bummed out about the zones, but it does beat vast emptiness. Great video!
Thats how i feel, even if this game is amazing its too pricey for me. Besides if you what till its on sale it'll have but fixes and maybe modding support by then, i really dont see a reason to buy games till they're on sale.
I loved the writing in Pentiment, it was simply incredible and is one of my favourite games ever. I just connected emotionally to the story so much, I was flabbergasted at how it wrapped up and loved every minute of it. I didn’t love the Outer Worlds, it felt off somehow despite being “fine”. The story and characters just weren’t interesting, but it was hard to nail why exactly, I just felt “meh” after finishing that game. So I hope Avowed is back to form.
@@louieberg2942 It's about normalization. The idea is that they want people to accept pronouns, especially the non-binary "They/them" in order to sell queer theory once it's something people are doing anyway. To allow pronouns is to basically accept the delusions of certain people. Drawing a line at pronouns thus becomes extremely important, and people thinking it's minor is a big deal because it's one of those things that has a lot of weight if it's allowed to be normalized, which is why it's pushed so hard.

Why only those 4 classes though? Where is the Cipher, chanter, monk, rogue, barbarian, paladin, and cleric?
Only 3 actually, unfortunately. The "Godlike" tree is just a base-line default one that everyone unlocks via progressing the MSQ. The classes you pick individual skills from are Fighter, Ranger, Wizard. Although I will say the Wizard tree is rather substantial, and seems to support more playstyles than just 'elemental caster'.
But yeah, would have loved more variety here.
Only 3 classes. What a let down.
To be fair, Skyrim only had 3 archetypes, so these skill trees could be similar. (Red, green, blue trees in Skyrim.)

I know it will sound insane but what really did speak to me in the Pillars franchise was the plethora of weapons. That really struck me as interesting having that many options.
I rally like blunt weapons in fantasy rpg's and when it comes to blunt weapons you had
1 handed clubs not a lot of damage but reliable and attack as fast as daggers I think
1 handed flails which had a gimmic of upgrading some attacks (the attack accuracy of the game was a bit complex but the idea was fails are hard to dodge, so they hit more often)
1 handed maces which were better at penetrating armor than other blunt weapons
1 handed military hammers which would deal either blunt or piercing damage which ever was better in the given situation
2 handed poleaxes which would deal either blunt or slashing damage much like the hammers did
2 handed quarter staves which were pretty darn deadly and had extended reach over most other weapons
2 handed morning stars a big ol metal ball on the end of a stick, they had the strongest interrupt stat of any weapon in the game, making it more likely to unterrupt enemies
And that's just the weaopns that do blunt damage, there were like nearly 30 weapon types.

Obsidian is a fantastic developer. Definitely one of Microsoft's best acquisitions.
But saying it looks and plays better than Veilguard isn’t exactly a high bar. lol
Nowadays I just try and keep my expectations VERY low for games from established development teams.
