I live in Australia and we bought the Beach 7 years ago. We have loved it and used it as our every day van, hubby surfs so was excellent for that. We have updated to the VW T6.1 Transporter - and used a VW partner to convert it to a camper as you cannot get a fully kitted out California here in Australia. We waited 11 months to get our Campervan and absolutely love it the conversion was first class and the additional space is so amazing.
I converted my IVECO Daily xlwb h3 because having looked at every campervan I could find nothing really met my needs. My custom van is absolutely perfect for me. If I could say just one thing about doing your own conversion it'd be to have a look at the happy-jack bed lift system, or something similar, before you finally settle on a layout. The amount of extra family space it gives you is absolutely amazing. Looking forward to following along with your conversation 😀👍
One of the first things I would do is fit a pull strap to the rear inside of the sliding door to make it easier to close. Pulling on the strap at 45 degrees (towards the steering wheel). When shutting this door from outside push at an angle at the rear of the door. You will be amazed how much more efficient this is.
I think you’re making a great choice. When wanting to go off grid on the continent, a toilet and shower are a necessity. I’ve looked at porta potties and Joocla Hottap stuff and it’s a huge faff. What is more, this additional equipment eats into the storage that is very little to start with. As far as I can see, the only positive with a smaller van (which is a rather large one!) is economy. You could also argue that a smaller van is easier to drive down tight tracks but driving a larger vehicle doesn’t faze me at all. Can’t wait to see how you get on, as seasoned vanners I’m sure you’ll make some great choices. BTW, I looked into buying the new E Mustang until I found out that the batteries need to be replaced at 4-5 years at a cost of £17k. Yikes!!!! Great video as always! Thanks for posting.
sounds like an amazing project - my tips look into the nordic alde hydronic system - MUCH quieter and better than blown air system as it uses radiators filled with antifreeze. I'd also think carefully about the passenger seats we are looking at build as we do long european trips and having a physical gap between the children as apposed to the usual double seat makes a world of difference if you happen to add another family member at some point - if you can get units with isofix and integrated booster seats they are the best.
That is almost exactly the same van as mine-I converted mine three years ago although I keep fiddling with parts of it. It's even the same colour! I also optimised for dog space, something I find lacking in commercial offerings...
Congratulations on your new purchase and well done for embracing the challenge of a self build. We cheated and bought our van (an Autosleeper) nearly three years ago and have used it extensively since. It was interesting to hear your comments about induction cooking and how you don't plan one for your build. About a year ago my wife (a keen cook who spends her life feeding the world!) got an inducting job in our home as a trial and found it to be a game changer. Induction cooking is extremely quick & efficient, does not emit heat outside the pan that's being used, is easier to regulate/control and simple to keep clean. It cuts out once a pan is removed and cools down extremely quickly. It worked so well at home that she insisted we install one in our van which we did and works very well with our lithium batteries and inverter. The induction hob supplements our gas cooker (a Thetford triplex) but to be honest is used far more extensively. An added benefit in the van is that because it's not gas you get less condensation. Might be worth you getting a cheap standalone induction hob at home to see how you get on. Any pot or pan you can attach a magnet to will work on an induction hob so you may not have to go and buy a new set for it to work. Good Luck !
I agree about having the extra option of gas for cooking, I do use my oven (and heating) however, with our Jackery 1000w, I can use my portable single induction hob (on lower level). Also my 800w hair dryer, straighteners, toaster etc.
Great choice going for the extral long chassis - the extra 40Kg or so over the long wheelbase van is well worth it and the biggest luxury in any converted van to me is extra clear living space. If you go to a supermarket with any van you're more than one space, so you might as well take up two full spaces! A few tips for what theyre worth as I have an XLWB MAN 180 Auto and ive had various other van conversions in the past. With the extra length include an area in the very back of the van thats full height - great for changing into wet weather gear or boots in the middle of winter and you could also fit a drop down down shower in there to free up huge amounts of space in the front living area? Dont bother with roofracks or external storage systems - you'll have plenty of space in the back of the van to store kit and every KG saved is critical. Fit rear air bag suspension - the van rides so much better and if its a little heavy it still sits nice and level! A Victron Lithium system with solar is a game changer and well woth the extra cost. Diesel hobs are useless, but diesel heaters are great! Low amp 240v kettle seems to work brilliantly. Best of luck with your build. Happy to send you some photos if it helps?
Great project! Glad you are using Gas, for Off Grid potentially keeping 3 way fridges is useful and Heating system and Hot water off of Gas LPG. Under floor tanks are good for Space. Check out Truma for heating and water systems. Votronics do great Electrical systems(Marine quality too). Another good 2nd Bed solution can be over Cab electric dropdown bed. Definitely show some good visits to the companies you can get equipment from. Good luck!
Good luck with the build. Have been thinking about doing a build myself for when we change our Cali but don't have the patience or the skills! Looking forward to see it evolve 👍
I did a lot of my conversion, and even built a unit and wrapped it in vinyl to match. The windows is def worth paying to get done, but also the carpeting. The only thing I would change on my T5 would be to get the carpeting done professionally. Good luck with the build.
I'm quite lazy and have no practical skills so I bought a huge goal zero and I LOVE it! I can run my coffee machine wherever I am and have the instant pot cooking dinner as I drive! No need for gas at all.
It sounds like an amazing project! When planning a time and money budget, plan a crazy amount of time and money , and then double it!!! Have fun and enjoy the build!
Good luck with the new build guys. For better off-grid living, from what I've seen, use diesel heating and cooking and forget all about gas. If you have fuel to drive, you have fuel for heating, cooking and hot water. If you haven't already, check out Ladi & Margaret channel. He is a very competent van guy.
Hi Guys just a thought regarding the windows along the near side, might be a good idea to make the window next to the sliding door fixed if not then if the window is open and the sliding door is opened, need i say more. anyway look forward to see you progress, Bonne chance
Have a look at the diesel hobs, we have a Wallas which doubles as a heater and absolutely love it. Boil time for a kettle is bit longer from cold but once up to temperature it cooks as fast as gas. Ridgemonkeys work great on it too
Absolutely agree with your mission. You’ve got loads of objective experience with vans as seen in your portfolio of reviews. I think I know what I would do but I’m really excited to see your solutions.
Really looking forward to following your crafter journey. I said hello to you the other day in Port Solent, apologies for interrupting your lunch, lol!!!
An interesting prospect in this build that I will follow with interest. In relation to Electric camper vans, Glynn Hudson and his wife have documented several long distance into Europe with their self built e-Nv200 electric camper including a 3000 mile Croatia adventure. They lead the field for EV campervaning imho.
Good luck with the conversion albeit there'll be some great entertaining videos coming up! Make sure there's plenty of room for Harvey & Bentley...you two can sleep in the garage! 😉🤣
If you haven’t already, take a look at Greg Virgo’s you tube videos. He converted a sprinter that very much looks like what you are thinking of. He covers every aspect of the build in great easy to follow detail. He does lots of tutorials on electrics, plumbing, sound and heat insulation , even a tutorial on computer design.
I thought the dvla changed the rules on converting vans.? Does that mean anyone can convert a small panel van like a T5 and get that legally changed to a campervan?.
hi Guys looking forward to the fit out, how exciting for you all. I've ben meaning to ask you this for ages. in your intro you have a snap shot of the time you took the motorhome( that was lent to you for a review) to Scotland and I think you where near Glen Coe? where exactly is that road you parked up next to that river, I would love to do the very same. love to you all but especially to Bentley xxxx
Hi Suzie, yes it’s in our back catalogue somewhere but the road is just off the A82 following the River Etive to Dalness. The location is used in James Bond’s Skyfall and marked as such on Google Maps 👍
Looking forward to 2022 seeing your van come together and don’t forget to still enjoy trips.... all work and no play is not why u have your vans. My advice is get the gas, windows and electrics done by someone professional. I had all mine done, and I have an annual habitation check done too - just for peace of mind. But other parts are all up for self build grabs, and I agree custom builds while they may not always hold their value, they do have the ability to be built to your own specification. My T6 is custom built, and has had bits added since I bought it to suit what I worked out I needed. Part supply issues is a pain, the company who built my van, had to wait ages for the Thule awning in the middle of last year. I think the challenge with EV's will come when fuel duty revenue drops for the Government, and they need to make that revenue up somewhere else. And then something around EV could come about, as a replacement cash cow. I could be wrong, but it is trying to workout where they replace the lost revenue. The other challenge for EV's becoming more mainstream, is how people who cannot park outside their homes are able to charge, and charge quickly to make it viable. If that conundrum cannot be resolved in the coming years, we could have a vehicle apartheid of people able to have, and masses of the population unable to have owing to the challenges of topping the batteries up.
Fuel duty is likely to be replaced with a road user charging levy, pay per mile so to speak, especially for EV’s. Most modern vehicles have built in telemetry now, and those that don’t can have mileage calculated from the annual MOT.
@@Rowtheboat99 But surely that is just another road tax? Which we are already paying - although I suspect not if you own an EV at this moment in time. I see this one having lots of twists and turns, before we see the final solution - and lets be honest, occasionally this has gone awry for past governments. Think diesel cars are better for the environment.
@@DS-cf1zc euro 6 diesel engines were originally marketed as emitting cleaner air than they sucked in so you might not be wrong. In 2025 we’ll start to see the change to road user charging I think. EV’s will be well established then and we should see price parity on purchase price so government can remove all the EV incentives then like free road tax and zero “fuel” duty.
I love EV's too but the vans are years behind the cars worst luck. I believe all the new T7's are hybrids although they are built on a car chasis not the Transporter chasis. VW and Ford are building a van together in 2023.. the worlds gone mad Lol
Do ourselves, scary stuff. By this time you know all the shops that can build this out to your spec. I certainly don’t have nor would I want to spend the time when those guys are so good at it. Both with jobs a dog and a baby who won’t be this cute for long. All the best of course but it makes me cringe.
Hi there I’m probably a voice in the wilderness but from what I can see you’ve gone from a highly desirable California Ocean to a slightly less desirable Beach to a gigantic and not too attractive empty van. I worry that you are going to design and build a vehicle that you are going to put your young and growing family in. What about safety, crash worthiness, structural rigidity, centre of gravity? I’m a pilot and I fly planes but I would much prefer Mr Boeing to design and build them for me. Similarly I would rather drive a campervan designed by the manufacturer, or at the very least converted by an approved converter. If I was a twenty year old hippy I obviously wouldn’t care because I’d be sure I was going to live forever. I’m playing devils advocate of course and I do wish you well with your project, but have you thought this through properly? VW employ lots of highly qualified and clever people to design and build their campervans. Can you as an admitted amateur hope to match that? All the best anyway Jim

Before we got our dog we ordered our Nugget and we´re so happy touring all together:)
Use sealant behind the metal stays which secure the panels, over time and quite often from new they are not secure which can cause rattles..
Did you consider buying a LHD van for travelling in Europe?
Will you need C1 on your licence when this build is finished? (Over 3.5t fully loaded)….
If we keep it at the current weight limit of 3.5t then no but there’s a good chance we will up plate it which would require a C1 license to drive it

There is something odd with the number plate on this van - in the reveal video it was 21 YUK and this one at 10:09 it is 71 YUK 🤷♂️🧐🤔
Yeah the dealer put the wrong plates on. Fixed now.

Question. How are you paying for all this? These vehicles aren't cheap. Finance? Inheritance?
Try not to line it with grey carpet, sucks the light out of the space. That’s why the Californias work so well.

Is there problem with your warranty from VW when you do your conversion?
I assume it will affect it somewhat. Probably in a similar way to when a conversion company alters a van though.

Do some investigation ....it seems almost impossible to get vans re registered now, they all come back as a van with windows
Enjoy whatever you do x
Hi there
I’m probably a voice in the wilderness but from what I can see you’ve gone from a highly desirable California Ocean to a slightly less desirable Beach to a gigantic and not too attractive empty van.
All the best anyway
Jim

There is an EV Transporter but it has an awful range.
