When we are extremely angry, sometimes we often want to say the most horrible things to hurt our loved ones just so they can feel the same pain, even though we truly do not mean it something deep within somehow makes us cross that barrier and wanting to say the most awful things.
You probably didn't fully grasp the magnitude of this scene, loved ones wouldn't harm you to this extent, loved ones won't let out their frustration on their children and wife, not everyone has loved ones. Tommy didn't just want to say awful things, he let out all that frustration back on its main source. In my case it's even worse, he had no addictions and thus no reason to tear our family the way he did. Unlike Tommy we didn't even need him when we were kids, i just needed him to leave us alone but clearly i was asking for too much
@@car6697 I thought Gary Oldman should have won for Tinker Tailor Solider that year but Hardy should have been nominated over Pitt or Clooney that year
The acting is so brilliant. That moment when his father said"dont do this tommy" it's like he knew it was gonna hurt and he tried his best to prevent him from saying something he cannot unsay. He knew that would break him and all his efforts to quit his addiction.
Seeing him instantly regret his actions when his father walks away is a powerful message if you think about it. Tommy needs to move on but he can't do that unless he faces his past as a man, and the only way for him to do that is to face his father as a drunk now that he's become a man. It's a cruel path to follow but sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards.
Nick Nolte's acting in this scene will stay in Cinema's history books forever. Especially ... when his son throws the coin cup at him. Just magnificent.
I love the comments in here. This scene is so ridiculously painful to watch. How Nick Nolte didn’t win an Oscar for this scene alone is just criminal. This film is so criminally underrated it’s sick.
I said this to my Dad last year. I don't know how it affected him, it was over the phone, but he wasn't there when I truly needed him, and he was trying to play catch up - while beating me up over past mistakes, saying I didn't have much time left, insulting the way I looked etc. He always did that to me as a child, and 30+ years of insults and anger just came out, all at once, and I still feel bad. It needed to be said, but it broke my heart.
His mom died directly from the actions of this man. They lived in poverty as he watched his mom battle her sickness with holy water because they couldn't afford medical care. After she died, he still didn't show his face (he even admitted he knew she died because he had hired a PI). He was drunk and abusive, what's an apology after that? At least he speaks to the man, Brendan completely ignores him, and he didn't had it as tough as Tommy.

Overcoming is the key, it is not easy, damn it is complicated but it is more rewarding and honorable than lowering yourself to be the same as you swore not to be.

One of Nick Nolte's Best Performances. Amazing. I hated Tom Hardy until I realized he was just playing a role - Brilliantly. Joel Edgerton really became Brendan Connoly. This is one of my Favorite Movies Ever.
Honestly I think Tommys in the wrong here. Yeah sure he must've gone through hell with him but if he hates his dad so much then cut him off and have nothing to do with him. Don't come running to him to train you it just makes everything a mess
That's what makes the next part so much more powerful and beautiful. Tommy sees him broken and drunk again, and he realizes that it's his fault, that this time he's the one doing the breaking. After all of it they are still family, and he just holds him. Which sets up Tommy's own moment later when he's quite literally a wounded animal in a corner of a cage, angry at the whole world, and he needs his brother to hold him down and tell him he is loved. The movie is nearly perfect.
You won't understand until you've been in his shoes. Nothing hurts worse than knowing the man that should be your father, doesn't want anything to do with you... by choice, and is still alive out there. I know first hand.
How was he in the wrong? The guy got left alone with his dieing mom when he was a kid. I don't blame him for letting his anger out on his dad and brother. He must of held it in for so long.

Every time I start to feel sorry for Paddy in this scene I imagine him doling out hooks and jabs to Brendan and Tommy's mom and all that sorrow just disappears
This is exactly what is happening now it makes me feel bad for what I have done to my father because he wasn't there until now playing the father suit.
It wasn't until the next scene where Paddy relapses with alcohol that Tommy realized his dad really did change. Right after he hurls the coins you can tell he felt bad.
I felt bad for Paddy until he ended up standing by Brendan’s corner during the fight and abandoning Tommy. The guy wanted to connect with Tommy throughout the whole film and the moment he does after that relapse he kicks Tommy to the curb, I’d say Tommy’s reaction here was completely justified.
