I so miss Matches860 and his fantastic story telling! I can only imagine the myriad of fascinating reminisces, that he still had left to share, that we all will never get a chance to hear. Thank You Matches860 for all your stories, advice, and your warm personality. You are very very missed.
You know I listen to this story years ago. And was brought back to messing around with my childhood friends. Now that I listen again I realize the point John was making about having a plan sticking to it and even though it doesn't work out as planned it may turn out better. Great story telling.
One of my favorite videos of yours Matches! I've been watching your videos for close to 5 years now, and I was always a "silent watcher" (I only just recently created a TH-cam account). But how I wish I could've told you how much your videos made my days. And they still continue to! You were such a gem, and you'll forever be in my memories. Pipe in peace my friend, till we finally meet somewhere, someday. With love, Sion.
Hello John! ...finally...another great story...always waiting for these - brillant told - stories! I just take a pipe, pack a tobacco close to yours ... and enjoy! Thanks for that, John! Take care! Mark
You are, without a doubt, my favorite TH-cam personality and the quintessential definition of a great storyteller. Another video I'll enjoy over and again.
Fascinating how the storm guides us to the places we're meant to find. While in the rain all the pieces feel frantic and random but looking back they all fit perfectly. Just like the pieces of my day that brought me to my pipe and your video. Thank you for this gift and the view through the window.
Thanks for yet another great story. Hope you have a great weekend filled with pipe tobacco and nostalgia. Also, nice pairing with The Doors and this story.
Matches860 love the story ..all you have to do is close your eyes and you are there...you are a magnificent story teller love listen while relaxing with bowl and a lovely cuppa tea. All the best from the land DownUnder
+Bogie TV Sometimes a life event stays with you and you wonder why...I think there were a bunch of hidden messages incorporated into the evening that took me years to unravel.
John, although I always enjoy your stories, this one especially rang true for me. I think we all have our own rain soaked basement hideaway of sort ... mine is in a 800 year old ruined monastery. Although I can't go back in person, this story reminded me to visit it once again by way of memory lane. Thanks! R
+Richard T Now that sounds like a great story, I hope you tell it! I cannot really revisit the house in this story as it has been "made over." I was going to post a picture from a few years ago, but I decided it was best to have the viewer imagine what I was talking about.
I loved listening to this. A great metaphor for life. Having grown up in southern California we didn't "have weather" back when I was a kid, so I literally have no personal story to match this one. Lots of fun, and something to think about.
Such a great story, as yours always are. And I could imagine you enjoying some HB sitting on the couch looking out the window. Thank you for telling this story to us. Happy piping brother.
Cool story, John. You're a good stroryteller. I could picture all the events in my head, as you went along. I really enjoy listening to old radio shows, like Sherlock Holmes ones, that do the same thing for me. Thanks for the shoutout to Bjorn. He's a good guy. Have a great weekend, yourself. Be Well. Ed
Great story! Your videos are one of the highlights of my week-Friday's are my only day off, and I unwind, smoke a pipe while watching you smoke your Friday Savinelli! Unfortunately I got called in to some emergency counseling meetings today, and could watch your video until now! Nonetheless, I am ending my Friday right here-watching you smoke your Friday Savinelli, and listening to your great story!
+Joe Puentes Fridays are awesome huh? Making the videos really helps me forget my past work week and gives a feeling of accomplishment in my life away from the job. Thanks so much for joining me Joe!
Hey buddy. Absolutely awesome video. This story was fantastic, I could relate to the same feelings from growing up. Thanks a lot for this one. Have a great week. Regards Mark
+backcountrypipe Thanks Mark! I've held on to this one until the season and my mood was right. Although I couldn't film in a better location due to the wind, I was still able to step back in time out in the woods. Always a pleasure to have you along...Be well!
John, what a wonderful story and clearly such a fond memory for you. What you said about "if I could go back and have a pipe" was quite a touching hindsight analysis. It got me thinking about my own life and if I had, so far, any "pipe-worthy" moments. An interesting thing to consider. Thanks for that. Have a wonderful week.
+mgvsquared Such a powerful, yet peaceful scene etched upon my mind forever (I hope). I'd like to think this will be the scene I review as I cash out someday.
+Matches860 How delightfully poignant. I've oft thought about what my final thoughts will be before whatever awaits me beyond. I can only hope they'll be just as peaceful as yours. :)
Wow. Great story. Your attention to detail is phenomenal. I'm in the radio business and one or our base tenants is "theater of the mind" You do that very well. I also like the fact that you created a metaphor out of the story. Very well done. Thank you for sharing. Be well brother.
+Papa Chubby Thanks Pappa! The only way I can tell a story is to play it in my mind and describe it. There are a few other metaphors from that evening, but we'll leave it as is.
+Bringer of Light Phenox The original title was gonna be "Sanctuary", however, the more I thought of it, "Riders on the storm" had multiple applications as did events in the story.
I agree with Pipes And kayaks about you writing a book, but with one exception; I think you would do great with an Audio Book.. You could title it "Memories of My Life". Listening to you tell your stories, my mind creates the video to go with your stories. Two examples: the story about the girl name "Lisa" and the one about the "Ducks, Beer and the Nurses".
Hey John, I really enjoyed your story and I think it can resonate with so many. I'm happy I've stumbled across your channel. It's a Friday again so have a great weekend.
+PiperPilot 181 The plan was to film at the lake, but it's still too windy. I personally hate wind noise and would rather have clear sound than a view LOL.
Always look forward to your Friday postings and I'm never disappointed. I know you said something recently about not having the gift of gab, but you do have a gift for telling a story, my friend. I hope your week brings you blessings upon blessings!
+Padre Piper Thanks for those wishes Padre'. I'm terrible with trying to talk off the cuff...I've frozen in front of the camera more times than I'd like to admit.
Wow, you should send something in to Selected Shorts on NPR, this rivaled most that I have heard there. So mundane right to the last few minutes then you drop a philosophical bomb. So artful. :)
great story with a warm message. Really enjoyed watching while smoking a bowl of Mac Baren Aromatic Choice, one of my go to options. Looks like Spring has finally arrived here in the UK but I'm not holding my breath. Have a good weekend.
You are younger than I , story telling is a gift I remember my grandfather , uncles and my dad telling a far fetched story and turn to the for verifying the yarn. The art is not dead
+Gordon Robinson Thank you Gordon! My Dad was a story teller also, but tended to add way more details...to the point you lost interest. I must be compensating LOL
Well, I had to watch this again John. What a special place to be, especially with a pipe. Being in a warm, comfy spot while enjoying a pipe. Looking out at the beauty of the fog and that subtle glow. There is a really nice feeling this puts a person. I really miss places like this in Wisconsin. Really thinking of moving back. I hope you're doing well my friend. Take care. Is that house still there?
Oh yes, there are just a few visuals that have survived the test of time and this is one of them. Funny how going for a simple walk one evening could turn into an event to be remembered for a life time.
Great Video!! I have just recently started watching your videos. I have found that many of the have helped refine my pipe smoking skills and help open my eyes to many more tobaccos. Also Love listening to your stories. Look forward to more Videos Happy Smoking :)
Great video John! I love how you paint a picture with words. I really felt like I was there with you in that basement looking out at the fog filled woods. Be well, Mike.
+CaneRodPiper Oh Mike, the window! If only everyone could have peered through that glass! I don't believe I've seen as beautiful a sight since. Hope all is well Bro, thinking of you often!
Great video John! Love how you tied it in with life at the end. I'm gonna have to revisit golden extra. I didn't give it enough of a chance. I've got the same tin in the cabinet. Hope you're well! Peace
+Joshua In The Woods Yeah, that story has stuck with me and reminded me that during the darkest hours, you can rest assured that you're going to end up somewhere LOL.
John, I agree with the other guys about you considering writing. You might consider getting one of those "you talk, it types" softwares. This is not just to save you the typing but you might be surprised at how your words look in print. Lots of successful authors are successful because they write in the same way they talk. Anyway, something to thing about.
+Jason Desjardins Oh my, all my stories are right here. I did set out writing some years back, but it's way more work than I have time for. Thanks for the kind words however!
+Blusax2 LOL, I took it from paper actually. Well, I kept an odd diary as a kid...mostly scribbled notes that only I could decipher. I put a bunch of stories on a floppy disk in the late '90's but that has since gone. Hopefully I won't lose my mind before I put them all on TH-cam.
Just started checking out the pipe smoking culture.....really enjoy your videos!! Tried Billy Budd and loved it....there seems to be a similar note in BB and Frog Morton Original....only more pronounced in the BB.....woodsy/cedar....would you agree? What tobacco variety creates this aroma/taste? Latakia? Perique? Keep up the great work!
+Petrochemtester Billy Budd is pretty complex however I'm guessing that you are referring to the latakia which is present in both blends. For a latakia bomb, try C&D Pirate Kake, a latakia lovers delight!
Thanks for another great video John! Next video can you say this for me "Damn son, Where'd you find this?" Thank you and it's okay if you dont. - Jacob
Holy crap. Really, no disrespect intended (and I know it sounds weird), but I bet you are awesome at bedtime stories lol I need some warm milk and biscuits now :)
+Paul Reynolds Well, here's why you threw me...some tobaccos have a lighter taste about them, like they had topping on them. Goopy flavored tobacco is another story...I thought maybe casing meant it was soaked into the leaf or something.
+ludviggsdh Thanks! I tried a pipe in college, but that went no where. Tried again in the mid 1990's figuring at some point I'd quit cigarettes, which I did in 2004. Transitioning to the pipe was very easy at that point.
I'm going to save all stories so I can enjoy them for a long time. We miss you friend
This planet is weaker without a normal guy like John.
Still listening till my end. Legend
I so miss Matches860 and his fantastic story telling! I can only imagine the myriad of fascinating reminisces, that he still had left to share, that we all will never get a chance to hear. Thank You Matches860 for all your stories, advice, and your warm personality. You are very very missed.
Love and miss you, Matches. Thank you for these videos.

I wish I was around to ask some of those questions that I have..............I will catch up to you when I get to my bus stop. Til then Matches.
What a story! Always a pleasure listening to your wisdom.
+Pipe Ramble Thank you! Hope that spring comes to you soon up there...I recall four very cold & long winters in college!
Now this is how you tell a story! I could listen to you all day -
+Enter Auh LOL, you're too kind! Thank you!
The wind and leaves in the background! Priceless....
Hi John.
Thanks God it's friday. Story time ;-) Thanks for the shout out. Greetings from East-Frisia.
Björn
+Björn Rippen All my pleasure Bjorn! Hope you have a wonderful week-end my friend!
Uuuhhhh - it makes me shiver - just feeling a little bit like in a novel of Stephen King - great story, impressively narrated
+Bernd Redmann LOL, my English professor in college was a student of Steven King's...that man was a wizard!
Hello John!
...finally...another great story...always waiting for these - brillant told - stories! I just take a pipe, pack a tobacco close to yours ... and enjoy! Thanks for that, John!

Mark
+Bremen Pipe Smoker Hi Mark, this was a great story for pipe puffing! Thanks as always for joining me in a great smoke!
You are, without a doubt, my favorite TH-cam personality and the quintessential definition of a great storyteller. Another video I'll enjoy over and again.
+The Joy Of Piping Well my thanks to you! The magic of that evening has never gotten old for me!

Also, nice pairing with The Doors and this story.
a Matches 860 story - must be Friday - great way to leave the troubles of the week behind. Thanks John.

this channel is pipes and ponderance at its best!
+Raghav Talwar LOL, thank you!
I have to agree with everyone, you are quite the Storyteller! You really know how to put us listeners in the moment!
I loved listening to this. A great metaphor for life. Having grown up in southern California we didn't "have weather" back when I was a kid, so I literally have no personal story to match this one. Lots of fun, and something to think about.
My favorite of your stories.
My favorite as well David!
Such a great story, as yours always are. And I could imagine you enjoying some HB sitting on the couch looking out the window. Thank you for telling this story to us. Happy piping brother.
It's one scene that will no doubt be etched in my mind till I die. The thought of it takes me right back.

+sinchi558 Thank you for watching!
I was thinking the same thing, a book. A joy to listen to, you are a wonderful story teller.
+lennieblue Thank you, I got it from my Dad, although he took 15 min. stories and turned them into an hour LOL.

Great story. Had a good bit of adventures walking around when I was young. Brought back a lot of memories. Hope you and yours are well.
Certainly one of my top three memories which took some time to be able to put to words. Many times our memories come from emotion as did this one.
Thanks John!!! You have blessed my Cob Tuesday 🌽💨💨💨💨💨
Outstanding Glenn from Maine now in Texas away from winter. Having a pipe on back porch 75 degrees

great story with a warm message. Really enjoyed watching while smoking a bowl of Mac Baren Aromatic Choice, one of my go to options. Looks like Spring has finally arrived here in the UK but I'm not holding my breath. Have a good weekend.
+Paul Reynolds Yes, we've hit 70 degrees here also, however, we've had some record breaking snow falls in March many times in the past.
That was an awesome story enjoying it with some bayu morning and Oktoberfest

Another classic matches860 story, and a long one too. I like that kind. I'll have to order a tin of that and give it a go.
+4cooey I knew it was gonna be longer than usual and decided not to chop anything out to make it shorter.

@@Matches860 I would love to see a video of you camped at the house smoking a pipe. (if possible) If it's from the 20's, that is even better!
The house was renovated in the 80's or 90's and is now a food bank for those in need. The woods remain untouched.
Great story John 👍🏻
My personal favorite.

Good story John. You remind me of one of those kids in the 1986 movie "Stand by me" your story fits the part

Holy crap. Really, no disrespect intended (and I know it sounds weird), but I bet you are awesome at bedtime stories lol I need some warm milk and biscuits now :)
+Jasongvl - No time for stories at bedtime my friend, I used to always like to jump right into action LOL
I just wondered if there was a difference. If it's the same thing that answers my question.
+Paul Reynolds Well, here's why you threw me...some tobaccos have a lighter taste about them, like they had topping on them. Goopy flavored tobacco is another story...I thought maybe casing meant it was soaked into the leaf or something.
I've watched the Mac Baren tour video and it looks like they use a huge tumble dryer contraption for adding the casing.
I've been meaning to ask. Have you done a video on the difference between a "topping" and "casing".?
+Paul Reynolds No, I didn't know there was a difference...I've been using the terms interchangeably...do tell!
i love the video name!
+Tony Marty The original title was "Sanctuary", however, when I evaluated all the pieces, I had to change it.
loved it!
+jllucas39 Many thanks!
Nice video. How did you get into pipe smoking ?
+ludviggsdh Thanks! I tried a pipe in college, but that went no where. Tried again in the mid 1990's figuring at some point I'd quit cigarettes, which I did in 2004. Transitioning to the pipe was very easy at that point.
That smell you describe, it's caused by some groovy bacteria called actinomycetes... Aaaaaaaaaaaand, I'm a nerd..... 😂
+Leo Aldopold Well actinomycetes are my pals! Glad I didn't try to remember them for the video, I would have needed to look at notes!
+Matches860 That smell also has a name! Petrichor! Every day is a school day :D
+Leo Aldopold Gadzooks man, you're killing me!
+Matches860 Good lord, we wouldn't want that! Great use of the word "gadzooks" though. I must use that more in future conversation.
+Leo Aldopold My Mom used that term many times growing up...then I heard it one time on TV and nearly fell out of my chair LOL.
