Karl Wallinger is one of the truly underappreciated treasures of his, or any other, era. A fantastic songwriter, musician, and performer. I'm proud to say that I have all of his albums.
Well put, Chuck. I really like Is It Like Today-maybe more than any other song. I just discovered WP within the past year. I love the way the singer & the song shine with a silvery patina in 2012. I'm 68 y.o.- if that helps frame my comments.
So sad, but my God what a musical legacy! "Is It Like Today" has always evoked emotions in me that I'm not sure I understand... "Many years ago he looked out thru a glassless window, didn't understand much of what he saw..."😢❤
Put The Message In A Box is a song that I try and pass on to every young person I meet. Its danceable, its got motions, its joyous - and its an important message. RIP Karl - Thank You
I saw Karl & World Party perform in the late 80s in a club and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. I deeply regret not making an effort to seeing him perform again. He was such a gifted musician and song writer.
Karl, I miss you already!!! Your music has been a perfect soundtrack for life! So intelligent, so humorous, so gifted!! Wishing your soul EVERY possible BLESSING!! ❤❤❤
I sure wish Karl hadn’t left us so soon. I listened to all his albums obsessively back in the 90’s. I loved his songs and voice and went back to listen to them now and then. Hope you’re happy wherever you’ve gone off to Karl.
I was 19, living deep in the American suburbs. I'd walk the streets of my neighborhood night with a cassette of Goodbye Jumbo playing in serious loop mode on my Walkman. That particular recording (coupled Marlboro lights) made my summer of 90 a better place. Karl is a brilliant songwriter.
Robert Sullivan - I relate to your story, I grew up in a suburb of Philadelphia, and at 20 I was longing to move into the city. World Party always makes me think of bright warm sunny early summer days in Olde City after a rain. Songs like this gave me a feeling like I could make a difference in the world.
I can completely relate to how this album was your inspiration back in 1990, as it was for me. I was at university in Durham, England, and spent a lot of time listening to this work of genius on my Walkman. Brilliant. It makes it into my top 10 albums of all time.
Of my ‘10 desert island’ albums, World Party is the only band with 2 albums on the list (Goodbye Jumbo and Egyptology). When I met Karl in 2014, I was almost too tongue-tied to speak with him. This one hurts deeply
I love his tunes and instrumentation, but lyrically is where Karl really shines. Every song is a sublime little piece of poetry. Such precise writing. Beautiful.
Me too, since waterboys days...ship of fools during Covid mad/sadness is all the more resonant with me living on my boat n with dog 4 off grid escapism...to get away from all the fools indeed
i was in love with this girl and we used to listen to goodbye jumbo and sing our hearts out together lying on the floor. precious simple moments never to be forgotten 🙏
RIP Karl. Thanks KEXP for the showcase and menories. Such lovely songs and beautiful albums. I saw WP the year of this clip. They were a three piece, and mostly acoustic. One of my favorite shows of all time.
His voice is still amazing 26 years after I first heard him sing "Ship of Fools"! I adore karl wallinger.. What a great musician , person.. Inspiration always for me voice same as 30 yrs ago brilliant.
Digger Agree. I also like the way he makes no effort to disguise the influence of the Beatles, Dylan, Stones, and even Prince and Stevie Wonder in his music. He seemingly effortlessly channels the best of these musicians and blends them into pure gems of songs, over and over. This is the one "band" (well, okay, not really a band) I've listened to continuously since the late 80s and never get tired of.
WP forever! These are gorgeous timeless songs, but Karl's voice here is just lovely, beautiful arrangement to boot. "Is It Like Today" holds special meaning for me - jet lagged and wide awake all night in London hotel room in mid-90s, watching mtv, this song burrowing into my soul like no other. What an inadvertent gift from my employer
So delighted to stumble across this live, dual gem of songs. Karl, your songs are never just songs. You are a true bard, Shakespearean Fool, and Voice in the Wilderness. Unassuming philosopher and friend. How is it you so oft show us the flaws in this world, but then somehow manage to leave us more fragile, more whole, and cherishing it that little bit more? God bless you, Sir.
Sad to say I only recently discovered Karl’s music in its entirety. Loved ‘Ship of fools’ but that was about it. Saw news of his death and then really investigated his music further. You were a genius Karl. A deep thinker and able to articulate that through your beautiful music. He is a huge loss. RIP.🙏
just heard of Karl's passing today. clicked a few videos and The Algorithm suggested this. Thank you, Algorithm, KEXP, and Karl. Love KEXP so much. Best Radio since the demise of WOXY.
I'm a musician , had a little success considering how much time i couldn't devote to music but i never realized just how much i was influenced by this band ... Great band ..
If you have ever gone to a concert and said man that band is really good after knowing nothing about them. about 3 years ago this was that band for me. Loved it
Karl's music always reminded me of spring. Was always a part of my life since I was a teenager in 1987. And yes, part of spring back in those days too. He left us in spring 2024, and his music still uplifts me the same way it did back in 1987. In our memories of Karl let's not forget Big Blue Ball. The song of the same name reminds me of Spring 1987 again. Rest in peace my friend, I am honoured to have walked with you, at least in music.
WP is my favorite music bar none. I never miss a show. I have never felt anything but positive and happy energy at his shows. He is a funny, talented, brilliant musician. I would have to be dead to miss a WP show locally. ABSOLUTELY GIFTED MUSICIAN.
Oh, how I enjoyed listening to this footage and was introduced to the release of ‘Arkeology’ - ‘Dig it’. A retrospective which delivered joy generously, on every level. A beautifully produced collection of sound, bound by it’s own eternal diary. Blessed are we, who attend the ’World Party’, Many, Many Thanks to you all, for your tireless effort to keep us revived, alive and unified by the Love of Music*~~~

WP is a connoisseur of their own understanding of what makes great music. Their vibe is they don’t care what you think of their genius, the only thing that matters is that they like their own art. And we’re lucky to see and hear what they produced
I loved this song in the 90’s and still do. I used to listen to it while riding my bike up to the firehouse to visit my dad and wanted to be a firefighter so so bad and finally on Oct, 19th 1998 ( Karl’s B-day ) I was hired😊

To lose him and Sinead within a year is brutal. Sweet Soul dream is a beautiful song.

Such sad news today. Goodbye Karl. Thank you for the music.
Such a beautiful songwriter and performer. Rest in Peace Karl
Karl Wallinger is one of the truly underappreciated treasures of his, or any other, era. A fantastic songwriter, musician, and performer. I'm proud to say that I have all of his albums.
totally agree. Karl leaked over from a parallel universe where Prince was born in the UK as a white guy.

Yes, exactly right
Karl and World Party are marvelous. A band that most Americans will never hear!
