  • There's quite a history to the Golf or Rabbit as it is in the USA. There's nothing quite like it on the road yet it's the car that everyone desires. Is it still up to the task of the modern world or is it a cheap version?
    Let's find out.

    Too many touchscreen menus - the same problem that the Audi A6 has - from an ergonomic point of view they can’t be safe to use whilst driving. What was wrong with dials and switches?

  • @Cjbx11
    @Cjbx11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Some people are complaining about the lack of knob controls but the slider controls do work very well and if you prefer you can adjust temperature and volume simply by taping + or - which is just as easy as turning a knob. The climate settings can be easily accessed by the hot key button which then brings up all the usual settings clearly on the touch screen in easy reach and in a clearer way than most traditional cars. I do think that some people are jumping up and down saying how bad touch screens are without ever trying it. Whether people like it or not it’s the future, just look at what Tesla are doing where you can’t even open the glove box without going through the touch screen.

    Most people don’t know what “build quality” really is. Build quality is not adding felt in the glove box or gas struts for the bonnet. Build quality is the processing quality of plastic moulds, panel gaps, paint finish, if anything creaks of rattles inside. Autocar compared the 8 to the 2020 Focus, and commented on the centre console with the Ford creaking when you test your leg against it, vs the solidity of the Golf.

    Definitely looks like a seat Leon arse which is so disappointing.
    Don't like the touchy slidy button spaces either, will be keeping our mk7.5 & s-line A6 Avant combo for a good good while it seems. Hybrid/phev just does not work no matter what angle you mooch a few km's with them, it's a farce worse than dieselgate. The charging grid is growing thankfully, just need to encourage a few more rural towns to install a charging point near their delicious cake shops for future staycation money to come to rural towns

      Just drove a Golf 8 again today and I don’t see it myself. Just ordered a. Golf R -line today. Maybe a few things such hood strut , glove box not carpeted (I didn’t know that it was on the 7 - which I drive now) are missing , but this has no effect on the build quality.

    • @WalkthroughWill
      @WalkthroughWill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      John Howard build quality and fit and finish is still excellent, a piece of felt is hardly anything and the telescopic hood strut I really couldn’t care less, the only person lifting my hood is a VW mechanic! The new Golf 8 is still a brilliant car, most things people say is complete rubbish! The Golf 8 drives even better than the 7.5, the only thing that concerned me was the lag on the infotainment system but Volkswagen sorted that out very quickly before the Golf hit showrooms! If anyone had actually sat in the Golf 8 they would instantly know that people on TH-cam are full of sh*t. I ordered my Golf on September 25th and my delivery window is about January!

    Hey Bob, Hi from Down Under. I love your reviews 👍 I noticed in this review you mentioned how the Golf suddenly slows after taking your foot off the accelerator and you then have to accelerate to compensate..!!
    I’ve noticed in our company 2021 Transporter has a similar trait, but I’ve come to realise it’s a part of the emergency braking system. If you take your foot off the accelerator pedal suddenly, it lightly applies the brakes, and then gives a stronger braking feel if you also react. If I take my foot off slowly, it doesn’t do anything but behave normally. Do you think this could possibly be the case with the Golf..??

    • @BobFlavinVideo
      @BobFlavinVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lane assist is still very intrusive at times especially when it wants to follow the yellow line at the off ramp. It catches me out on back roads with sudden jerks back into lane.
      I only use it on long motorway journeys

    Just sold my 7.5 after just under 3 years. Loved the car, and the Interior was great. The quality was very poor in the bits that mattered. Under 45k and it had 2 major repairs(throttle and brake pump). VW are cutting costs and so are many others, but I’d rather have something that rolls and a bit of plastic than sit at side or road and pay 1000€ to get going again.
    It’s a real shame, and hopefully the 8 addresses those issues.
    Great channel, and even thou I’m not buying I love the videos.

  • @ST-ur7oh
    @ST-ur7oh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Good review Bob and I like the fact you didn’t spent 2 centuries talking about the touchscreen. The Golf 8 reminds me of an Austin allegro - looks better as a designers sketch than in real life💤 but hopefully the 8.5 will sort out that face.

    • @mathias61

    • @ST-ur7oh
      @ST-ur7oh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mathias61 quite a lot - the dumpy ass, the stretched front and rear overhangs, the dumbo wing mirrors, the droopy face, the weird eye lash things on the corner, the odd lower grille, the awful 17 inch alloys and the lack of grace and design subtly VW is renowned for. All the above issues are resolved in the new Octavia which is more visually attesting.

    Those touch controls are just awful. Volume and temp should be dials. Its the easiest to operate when you are on the road. I can see a scenario where someone wanders in front of the opposing traffic, because they have their eyes off the road and are trying to adjust the heater temperature while driving. Not smart at all. That setup would strike the VW off my shopping list just for that.

    Other than cupholders, why do you think the designers are unable to stay away from having a full center console that takes up so much interior space? With electronic shifting, just put a dial or buttons up out of the way somewhere on the steering column or dash. You hardly ever need it.

    It would be interesting to compare the Golf 7 and 8 together , according to most opinions the new model is a step backwards in styling , especially from the front , if only VW could be more bold with the boring generic design which has not changed much in 20 years but i guess their typical customer is very 'conservative' and does not want anything too radical. The dash looks more basic , evidence of cost cutting , and i think elderly drivers in particular will struggle with those fiddly controls , no doubt it will remain the best selling car in Europe even after the launch of the ID3 , i'm sure the Clio will close the gap in numbers as a result of VW having 2 separate models !.

    • @johnhoward6461
      @johnhoward6461 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speak for your self! I’m an elderly driver and have driven the new Golf and had no problem with the controls. Doesn’t take long to get to know,. I rented a BMW 1 last year and that took a lot longer to get used to. I personally find a touch screen nicer to use than idrive switch, but as I said that’s me. The dash is not more basic, just minimalist. I don’t see any evidence of cost cutting, quality is just as good. Ok there’s no cover on the drink holder, a minus point. Why have so few people mentioned how the car is on the road? Perhaps they haven’t driven the new Golf. In my humble opinion it’s a better drive than the 7 I own, which is still a great car btw. Now nearly 5 years old and only wiper blades replaced.

    Great review as ever Bob, however, trying to spec this new Golf 8 "life edition" to anything near a Tesla Model 3 Standard range plus and the configurator sits at a shocking £36,950.00 That's pure madness for a car with half the horsepower and a worse warranty. It may be a fine car but it's rubbish value for money. They want £615 for keyless entry and £335 for side and curtain air bags. No thanks - next please.

    When was the last time VW did bold design. Even the original golf was a box. Maybe the scirocco. Otherwise every "new" golf is just a mild refresh of the old one. The rare innovation is the engines (TDI, dct, supercharge engine, cylinder deactivation). Even then most of them come from Audi 1st. The most innovative design VW has done in decades is the ID3 (looks like next golf) or the new bettle. AUDI is no better bar the R8 /TTand original aluminium A8.

      mathias61 People don’t like change, a lot of people said the same about the mk7 when it was launched. I own a MK8 and it’s a fantastic car. People are judging the car without seeing or trying the car for themselves. The thing that annoys me the most are people who are criticising VW for cost cutting because of some things that have been removed but totally ignore the extras that have been added to the car which in most cases cost more than the items they removed.

      @@Cjbx11 it's not about change, it's about a bad design choice

      @@Cjbx11 true story, I went to a dealer not thinking I'd end up with a golf mk7 (the dealer suggested it, but i was thinking about holding onto my mk6). I looked at a standard 1.6 mk7 car, but thought it was a bit bland (although it was a lovely spec). Was about to walk away, but then saw a dark grey GTD and it really looked a step up, especially with the tartan interior. Drove away in that car the same day. Something subtle like a different badge or body kit could make the difference

    Bob you must have muck in your eyes if you think vw quality hasn't gone down hill !!! The golf 8 is one UGLY CAR, and all that cheap shiny black plastic everywhere, Bob that is one nasty interior!🤮🤮 it's now a fact that the MAZDA 3 has the best interior in the class.
    Why do so many car reviewers look at VW products with rose tinted glasses?? How the mighty fall and vw deserve nothing less for the lies and cheating and the contempt that they treated their customers with. Disgraceful company.

    Most car reviewers seem to think that the Golf is the holy grail of cars . And VW in general but they all seem to forget about diesel gate. I think that the Golf is one of the most boring and unadventurous cars to look at on the road. This one is no different. Just looks like a box on wheels. Yawn....

    The “eyebrow” above the head lights is so 2015. Ford Expedition, Range Rover, etc has the same treatment. The infotainment looks easy to use, Touch Bar is so MacBook Pro, hate it even though I use an Apple. Physical buttons would be nice. All in all, the Golf is a nice package.
