Mk7.5R or GTI is the sweet spot for me, stance is spot on and front end isn’t fugly, cabin feels more special and infotainment is intuitive. . .maybe vw will get their act together with the 8.5 but I somehow doubt it, oh and a manual option wouldn’t go a miss! 😎

Great review Bob After driving the car a few weeks back i share your frustrations with the haptic buttons on the steering wheel along with the infotainment system. But i disagree with it being better than the 7 or the 7.5. The interior plastics and interior overall felt cheap to me and more along the lines of what the Japanese competitors would offer. The 7.5 was the sweet spot here. Seats i thought vs the last clubsport were very basic with no real special feel on the interior either vs the last with red stitching, nice leather and suade along with that alcantara steering wheel. As for the drive again you may have been driving a lot of electric cars of late as i found this model a bit dead, along with no option of a manual the visceral feel of the mark 7 was gone. Steering was flat on feedback and the engine felt strained even though there's no comparison on speed as the new clubsport is far far quicker than the old. But just didn't float my boat with the lack of feel or engagement. Then put the price at 60k with some options and i'm afraid the mark 7 looks like unreal value now for what you get. This is just my humble opinion though but i would say to anyone looking to buy one drive both and see what they think.
@@fastrace14 not sure if i agree with you on that with the golf R, i've been lucky enough to drive both manual and dsg and the manual didn't really work for some reason, it felt like the dsg was made for the car and the manual was an after thought, which when i drove both of the clubsport dsg and manual i felt it was the opposite. Again this is just an opinion.
Each to their own and all that but I was very impressed with the standard gti and then ordered a clubsport with a few options. Nowhere near 60k but I know you can get there if fully loaded. I went with 19’s, dcc, winter pack and rear camera.

Probably not too helpful but I tested the normal gti as there is no cs for testing where I am. Immediately it felt better inside than all the videos and pictures I’ve seen and the screen was far more responsive than any videos I’ve watched. I believe that is because they updated the head unit where as the press cars are earlier builds. I then sat in the tcr 7.5 and there is a difference in quality but it did feel a bit dated. I didn’t drive that so as I say this probably isn’t going to help you. The standard gti was great to drive but the last one I drove was a mk5 so again not helpful.
I'd suggest getting a test drive sorted to decide and also base off what can they offer on your tcr. As the person above mentioned, test a normal GTI as the CS is essentially that with a larger turbo. I did find it better than the tcr, but went with the new R myself.
Hi Bob. Great review. Saving up for one of these to chop my Mk7 GTi which I have owned from new since 2013 ! The Golf R has 320hp so 20 more than this but I reckon it’s every bit as quick due to being lighter.
Mk7 golf r manual 3 door is still the best of the more recent golf's in my opinion last of the 3 doors and the quality is fantastic, this new golf isn't bad but the design and quality aren't as good in my opinion.
I have a 7.5 pp dsg dcc and can’t get excited about chucking mine in, paying double the price and end up with a car that has poorer materials and cockpit than mine. If VW did a manual I’d give it a go but I’m sticking with mine until I can find something better, haven’t been able to yet….
I’m sure the gti is very good in every way... but I just never wanted one, I’ve had a few hot hatches in the past.. clio 172, type r x2, focus rs but the gti just never appeals to me... can’t really point my fingers on it, just don’t want it.
Looks very jittery to me... And I must say if it was a Vauxhall with a crappy infotainment system (and this is really crappy) you would have trashed the car - but not the GTI. I don't think it's that great

I agree the mk7 just seems more well rounded and in my opinion looks better, the mk7 golf r 3 door in manual is the ultimate car.

Your missing the point. It’s a do everything hot hatch daily driver. It needs to be available as a 5door for that very reason. It’s not a sports car.
