@@mitchgross592 I am looking forward to that! Would love to phase out some of my other units! Getting some smaller units with BLAIR will make my package very sought after.
PL style bowens mount. Caleb said the exact same thing when he saw it haha. White light never looked this good... more like Black Shirt never looked so good.
Great video! The 1200x looks like an amazing light fixture. I hope there’s a bit of a trickle down of the tech used in this light to their smaller bi colour light.
Camera + Lens used in the tests might good to know--did I miss that? I know you've got options generally but I like knowing if someone's results might come across similar with my use case scenarios. Great video, love all the deep diving and comparing to other lights as well as seeing some of your lighting BTS!
Could you tell the difference in movies or cinema? Like to the normal person 100% they won't but even if you're looking for it do you think someone could tell?
@@stuartswindellcampoy8483 IMO it depends on what you’re putting in front of the lens ultimately. Could ask the same question regarding lenses, format, etc
@@robchado true I mean lenses are more obvious as they come with different characters like flairs or micro contrast etc. But yeah that light having that tiny extra on the wavelength I really wonder for real :)
I use to be an HMI purest from my film school days. Then I worked for a union gaffer that lit stranger things amongst other huge shows. He had us color meter 18ks for our truck package. Depending on the life of the globe, ballast etc. I was surprised that there was cooler readings up to 6000k and every hmi light we struck had some levels of plus green.
As someone that has used HMI's for decades, yes, they have been the standard for a very long time for shooting outdoors, because of their output and being natively 5600K, but they were never perfect. They have deficiencies in their spectrum, just like everything else that's not tungsten or the sun, that depending on certain factors, could range from virtually unnoticeable to "Yeah, that doesn't look right". Obviously it makes sense to compare the 1200x to a traditional HMI, but to me it seemed like HMI's may have been placed a little too high on the proverbial pedestal with regards to skin tones and color rendition. IMO, LED's, at the very least, tied HMI's in skin tone and color rendition years ago. The only thing HMI's still hold over them, is huge, brute force fixtures, that may still be many, many years off from having LED equals, if ever. But for anything in the owner/op and/or realistically manageable by a single person/small crew realm, LED's like the 600 and 1200 series have mostly supplanted HMI's. I think I've only pulled out my 800's maybe once since getting the original 600d Pro's. And now I have two 1200x's on order. Except for possibly an emergency back-up, I doubt my real HMI's will ever go out on a paying job with me, again.
All of my 1200 HMIs have been collecting dust for a few years now. I’ve noticed HMIs are hanging on much longer in the rental house/feature film world than in the commercial/corporate, though LED are definitely used. In my opinion it’s because the operators and DPs have it as a common way of speaking to each other. “Put me an M18 through that window there” is something a DP can say and know precisely what it’s going to look like whereas he or she may still be a bit unfamiliar with what a 1200 watt LED unit would do, even if it is nearly indistinguishable in most cases. Regardless, I think HMIs below an M40 level are pretty well obsolete, and even M40s are being given a run for their money nowadays with the advent of the 2.5K realm of LEDs.
Now it is time to trickle this down to the 600, 300 and 60! Great video!
@@PDMokry It sounds like there will be smaller units in the STORM line!
@@robchado That is very exciting!
Can confirm that will come over time.

Another epic video! Appreciate you Rob. Can’t wait to test this one for ourselves. The new locking system looks dope!
Those ending casino shots look great : )

The black is so black!!
Fascinating! I haven't seen any other people talking about the effect of different 'white' lights on colour saturation.
Super interesting results regarding the spectrum comparisons. Would love to see the same test in tungsten

I enjoyed watching this, nice episode
Dude went from dci to cinematography, love it!
Great review. Stoked on that low end performance
Your black levels are always the best in your footage. Do you have a tutorial on how to achieve that from a technical standpoint?

I love how many people just defer some of the specs to Andrew Lock, he's so great.
Crazy I liked C the best.
Can I use this for photos?
M18 is the best looking for me.
I chose B.
Price? 😅😅
OK $2999 ... not bad ... or even very cheap :D

still needs a deep red chip to perfect skin tones
If you ever work with AJ and not invite me we fighting lol
I'm calling that thing the Aputure A-Mount lol
Actually the mount on the Electro Storms has that name already.
@@mitchgross592 so is this the locking a-mount? 😅
The Electro Storm Aputure mount locks. This is the ProLock. It has a great name and doesn’t need another.
