      @@AnimeZone247 If you watch more videos from this channel you'll see that they think lighting is very important. I interpreted the ending to this as an acknowledgement that lighting is only one part of the video production craft, and that if you can get strong results with using less resources you'll have greater ability to focus on other areas that are also important.

    • @AnimeZone247

      @@MeridianMedia yes I have watched a lot of videos from this channel. And the goal is not to use less lights, it’s to get the point of the story. And if you do that using less lights that’s great. Plus their last shot looked ugly, unless that’s look they’re going for. But if you only doing that bc less lights, and not bc of story, then that’s atrocious 🤢🤮

    Man, it's like you're retelling my production career. The flat panels bring back memories. We filmed in a shadowy room, with blue tinted windows, with the sunlight coming through the windows. We ended up using two panels, a system with five 100w fluorescent bulbs, and one panel for a keylight... Lots of recovery in editing...

    I'm a big fan of walking into thrift stores and finding vintage lighting. I used to find a tone of photography stuff but I find fewer pieces now. But I have bought 2 "movie lights" in the past year. They are like 60-70 years old, they are made to expose for super 8 film, but it's literally a bar of 4 edison screw bases. One that I bought had 4 halogen lamps that said "movie lights" in the center, they are 300w each. I've tried using them a couple of times, mostly for fun, but you get four shadows. I should probably pump through an 8x8 and it would look fine, but I'm not brave enough. and It gets hot. I have one set up with blue tooth speaker light bulbs right now and its more of a novelty than actually useful. Still neat though.
    I also found an old smith victor A120, which they still make a version of today. I bought the plastic clip on diffusion from their website and now my wife uses it for live streams.

  • @BenEricson
    @BenEricson ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I gotta say, I honestly think the home depot lamp with the box diffusion maybe looks better. The light is slightly harder, but in a flattering way. It gives the subject's face more definition and shape. Not only that, since the light is harder, there is a really nice ratio without the need for negative fill because the light isn't bouncing all over the room. Surprisingly, the really simple solution is not worlds apart, just a different look.

    Great video! You mentioned feeling embarrassed about having a "Photography Lighting Setup". For me, I started as a photographer so once Aputure came out with a bowens mount COB I was thrilled because I knew much better how to shape light with a softbox than most traditional video lights! Best sentence of the video:
    I dont think so much about lighting any more, but about the story!! ❤️😊

    • @robertruffo2134
      @robertruffo2134 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were hired as a cinematographer and thought like that you would be fired the same day. It always matters how things look. A video is not radio. Ask any film distributor, any advertiser, any person actually paying money for content.

    • @andyony2
      @andyony2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertruffo2134 thx for the response. I wasnt as clear as I wanted to be:
      Lighting does matter! But lighting without a good story is also a easy way to get fired ;)
      so you need both!
      And yes, when talking about Feature Films, good lighting gets more attention then good story, thats why there are so many bad movies.
      In smaller production I always emphasize the story before thinking about lighting.
      And yes: lighting and story are interconnected and cannot be seen seperately, I know :)

    I haven't been watching TH-cam lately but I enjoyed this a lot. It was cool to see the amount of expensive lights you used just for little details like filling up a room in the background. The effect of the negative fill really surprised me. I know this was used but seeing the a and b side by side was really interesting. In conjunction with this, log, raw and finally waaaaaaaaaay better dynamic range on sensors has also facilitated the move to just using a window like we probably should have right in the beginning.
    This lighting journey is so close and raw it almost hurts, though I did stop buying more stuff after the 120D and went to windows from there because of a Mark Bone video. Had I started making money from videos sooner, I definitely would have made it to at least the 300D II which I remember being on sale here in NZ a while back, solely for the ability to fill faces on full sun backlighting.
    Your video got me right in the feels man and kudos to your wife for being able to sit through the hot lights. I only ever had off-brand red heads, they were hot enough.

    I’ve had a love hate relationship with lighting since the start
    My first endeavor was getting the classic work flood light from Home Depot
    the aputure MC was my second chapter- realizing that it’s not powerful enough to work as a key light outside of a highly controlled environment
    I then took on just shooting everything natural
    I then later got a job as a full time videographer with access to the 300D MKii and have only used them for 4 commercials. The c stand carrying case and just overall are so freaking heavy to carry around and it’s a process to set up as a one man crew.
    I feel like every time I think about lighting too much and try to manipulate it, I end up making things worse. I guess I’m just a natural light guy.
    Maybe one day I’ll master them, but the classic TH-cam set up with the 120d and giant dome is just too basic of a look to me and it gets way overused.
    Just my opinion.
    Really enjoyed the video! Thanks!

    I don't know why Shane does the cyan to ceiling, maybe for the orange teal look?
    But if you ad blue/cyan to the ceiling on the window side it can create a more natural light because normally on a sunny day you won't have a single source light coming into the window - you also have the blue reflection from the heaven.

    Insanity first, otherwise, most of us would have had a 9-5 job.

    I like those slightly janky DIY experiments. I'm more of a sound person but I'm definitely going through the equivalent stage myself, and I think there's a lot of value in going through that.
    If you had to start over today, what would be your starting kit in order to grow and learn?

    I really, really like this video. I was thinking about the evolution too. How many things have changed since I graduated from film school about 6 yrs ago. Im seeing less 10ks, 5ks and more Led lights like aperture that don't get as hot:)

    Never could get into COB lights... the cabling spaghetti and flipping huge modifiers for travel. I still sneak in my ancient Lowel RIFA 88 & 55 kit for interviews when I know there won't be a window in the shot... tungsten just looks too dang good and the Lowel fixtures pack so dang small & light

    its funny how you went full circle back to windows. I think the dynamic range of digital cameras has caught up to high contrast lighting. also, how do you feel about 1917 lighting. they only used clouds as diffusion. I think the best cloud cover is 15% stratus for optimum camera work.

    Important note, it ends with just opening the window
    One reason to avoid that is if the window lighting is inconsistent
    If there are clouds that can go in and out causing the brightness to drastically change or if the sun is going up/down
    Also by opening the window you introduce any color cast that may be present, I find that my shots tend to be more green if there is a lot of sun bouncing off of foliage which can not be great on skin and makes color grading difficult when mixing it with studio lights

      You can overcome a lot of that by sticking a 1200d on that window (from the outside).

  • @KarmaIsABitsch
    @KarmaIsABitsch ปีที่แล้ว

    Windows on a steady cloudy day are the best! They only tend to get problematic, if interviews take a long time due to the light direction shifting. But for a half hour take - diffuse the heck out of windows and let the sun do the work.
