  • I repasted the CPU and GPU on my Razer Blade 15 and thought I would share it with you.
I have carried out lots of testing since repasting and conclude that there is NOT a significant improvement in temperatures. More information below.
    Timeline:
    Case open at 0:37
    Battery unplugged at 0:53
    Ribbons disconnected at 1:11
    Heatsink removal at 2:01
    Reveal at 3:08
    Cleaning at 3:37
    Application at 7:15
    Heatsink back on at 8:16

    www.amazon.co....
    Wipes:
    www.amazon.co....
    Cloths: www.amazon.co....
    Swabs:
    www.amazon.co....
    Results:
    Before repaste:
Gaming on balanced mode with max fan: 82 deg cpu, 74 deg GPU, sustained CPU clocks at 3400, GPU clocks at 1450.
Gaming on gaming mode with max fan: 91 deg cpu, 79 deg GPU, sustained CPU clocks at 3800, GPU clocks at 1500.
    After repaste:
Gaming on balanced mode with max fan: 78 deg cpu, 72 deg GPU, sustained CPU clocks at 3500, GPU clocks at 1450.
Gaming on gaming mode with max fan: 91 deg cpu, 78 deg GPU, sustained CPU clocks at 3800, GPU clocks at 1500.
It was performing well before I repasted and it is performing well now, so a repaste was not necessary. I would suggest that you only need to consider this if you have thermal problems that can't be improved with an undervolt (i.e temps up at 100deg and thermal throttling).
This is a win for RAZER as they clearly used effective thermal paste and their application was effective. After 16 months of heavy use, the paste hadn't degraded or dried up. This is another reason that I would buy another Razer for my next machine.

Thanks for the guide. I've had my blade nearly 2 years and about a month ago I shut the lid (normally puts it in sleep mode, this time it didn't for some reason) and put it in my bag. When i got it out again 45 mins later it was too hot to touch, cpu was at about 99 degrees. When I took it apart the paste, or what was left of it, was crusty. • @WarneysWorld

The fans on these are not too loud at all, especially compared to other gaming laptops. Also, you can control them manually, so you could put them on 50% in balanced mode and still get good performance but quieter. I tend to play with headphones in so I crank the fans to maximum, just to get the best possible temperatures. Balanced mode with maxed fans is my favourite :)

No my temps weren't that high but I didn't really need to repaste. If your temperatures are up to 100 on your GPU I would definitely repaste. I think it will make a difference.

To anyone who is going to repaste your Razer blade 15 ( in my case it is a version from 2018). You might have noticed four soft pads that cover heads of four heat sink screws (th-cam.com/video/XUKb-FzgubI/w-d-xo.html). Throw them away (or glue them?). You may have been smart enough not to put them back, but I was not ( though I had a feeling that I should not. But then, I thought, ah it was there in the first place who am I to throw these pads away?). Long story short one of them ended up being stuck in one of the fans, blocking it. I had temperature drops when playing, and could not see a reason (for a few months after repast I had to stay home and did not move my laptop, but then I was allowed at my office, and then I guess while carrying it, gravity pulled one of the pads down which ended up in the fan.). Then I looked at it and saw that one of the fans does not rotate.

Why you didn't clean the fans, and grills from dust, ahhh and also .... pressure will not spread - in laptops - thick paste, you would be better of with using that spatula that was with Thermal Grizzly, additionally just after reassembly it is best to quickly thermal cycle the CPU and GPU - you need to expand/contract the paste as quickly as it is fresh and fill in 'voids' well. I would agree though that 5C up to 10C difference is only with perfect application, LQM can reach 12-19C improvements.

    • @WarneysWorld
      @WarneysWorld  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Tough choice! I think you should base this decision on whether you want to game on it. If you do, get the razer blade, if you don't get the MacBook Pro. They are both very well built, but I'd say the Mac is slightly better (I have one of those too). The Mac has better speakers, keyboard and touch pad too. The Mac's keyboard is the best I've used. In terms of thermals, I'd actually say it's pretty even. They both get hot. I probably prefer the razer in this respect. The razer cooling solution is more aggressive and you can use throttlestop to tune the CPU temps if you need to. You can't do that on the mbp.

    • @WarneysWorld
      @WarneysWorld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Upgrading your ram and SSD won't invalidate warranty but repasting probably will. But I don't see how they would know that you've done it unless you put it back together wrong or tell them. I did mine when it was already out of warranty, and I didn't really need to do it, I just wanted to find out if it made a difference. If you have a device with high temps and poor performance it would definitely be a step I would take as a poor paste application could be the cause of the problem

@@WarneysWorld Thanks for the reply mate! The idle temp I was referring, its literally doing nothing. No browser open or anything. It's playing within 55-60s then if I open a browser it will jump to consistent 60s but not more than 63deg. Actually, when I repaste my RB15 I was also impressed with the temps, though I tried different settings to get the perfect settings with no throttling or sacrificing FPS performance. I set the core clocks limit to 3.0ghz - 3.2ghz and my temps on warzone doesn't go up more than 81deg. Also quite impressive when I play multiplayer, there I tried different settings also then I get 73-75deg max with disabling turbo boost so my core clock only uses the base clock of 2.6ghz then I get 160-170fps.

Thanks for the tip! Someone else in the comments with the same device as you also recommended disabling turbo boost so I've been meaning to give it a try. Those temps and performance figures are impressive. In terms of the idle temperature, you are only a few degrees above my device so, I don't know whether it is just silicon lottery (some chips running hotter than others) or whether it's something else, like different ambient temperature/humidity or a bit of dust in the fans. Are the fans running quiet? Another possibility is that the 8th gen blade has a slightly more aggressive fan profile!

I'm wondering if I need to do this to mine, as I've been experiencing quite common and lengthy lag spikes in every game I play recently (after about a year of it working perfectly with whatever I throw at it). I'm pretty sure it isn't driver related, I'm starting to suspect it's thermal throttling.
Would you say that cleaning the vans out with compressed air and possibly applying fresh paste could solve the problem?

Thank you!! Yeah I really like the Razer Blade, I still think it offers the best balance between power, portability and build. If you were looking for a powerhouse, the Razer Blade pro 17 is significantly more powerful than the 15. It runs its GPU at 100w instead on 90 on the 2070 version, and according to notebookcheck it outperforms most modern devices with the 2080 super max Q. It has 4 fans too so better thermals. I'm considering getting one soon. The only thing I would say as a significant consideration, is that I wouldn't recommend using these laptops on your lap. On a desk they are fine, but on your lap the air intakes are blocked and the whole device gets hot. Worth being aware of in case this doesn't fit with your use case 👍🏼

Initially, I did thin X and saw how the temps went crazy, about 15 degrees higher than before.
Then I've reapplied using the fat X with dots on the empty spaces and now the temps are pretty the same as were before the first applying.
So, I see that the GPU definitely needs more.
