One of the tightest versions of ABAC I've ever heard. To: Mr. Fay, Mr. Baker, Mr. Sinclair, Mr. Downie (RIP), and Mr. Langlois: Thank you. From: a fan.
Sometimes the guitar playing of Paul Langlois goes unnoticed in a lot of videos, but I love his place in the mix here. You can really hear how much he contributes to the meat and potatoes of the band's sound, his introduction in the second verse is really fierce, and the playing he does alongside Gord on bass is fantastic in the outro. I love this video, the band is at its peak here (in my opinion) and they get a chance to really play through the song as they would in any other live setting, the best of the Hip on TH-cam!
First thing, we'd climb a tree And maybe then we'd talk Or sit silently And listen to our thoughts With illusions of someday Casting a golden light No dress rehearsal This is our life And that's when the hornet stung me And I had a feverish dream With revenge and doubt Tonight, we smoke them out You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century Stare in the mornin' shroud And then the day began I tilted your cloud You tilted my hand Rain falls in real time And rain fell through the night No dress rehearsal This is our life But that's when the hornet stung me And I had a serious dream With revenge and doubt Tonight, we smoke them out You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century And disappointin' you Is gettin' me down
Hung oot with Gord & the fellas in Austin 2009. Brought the entire Texas Stars AHL team with me. Great show. They (Hip) were more impressed with us, somehow.
I am disgusted with the use of this song in a Canadian Tire commercial. How dare they! Downie is a national treasure - living or dead. Show some respect!
Gotta say, I really find it insulting that today's radio programming, (which doesn't have a freaking clue about diversity and how widening the scope of an artists catalog for airplay) can literally kill one song through repetitive, mind numbing overplay. Money is the bottom line.
life is never quite the same once you discover the 'Hip'......
Gord Downey was a poet of the highest order. The world was a much better place with him in it. His music will live on for generations.
Gord was a modern day bard. RIP.
"you're gonna miss me, wait and you'll see"
this year will be four years since he left us and this song still brings me to tears every time I hear it
Amen
Oh, all of a sudden realized the man is gone. I must be living under a stone. Sometimes life goes to fast & all of a sudden your ahead a century.
Me too.
I hear ya, me too!!
"Disappointing you is getting me down" hit a lot different when they did the farewell concert and went out on this song.
One of the tightest versions of ABAC I've ever heard.

Looked up to the Gord above and said hey man thanks
Get Gord Downie to sing my eulogy.
The best band that nobody outside of Canada or the Northern fringe of the US has ever heard of.

This is True. Just discovered. Amazing 👏
More people than you may think!!! Hip hip hip hip
They were known in Chicago because WXRT had this song in heavy rotation.
I turned a few Mexicans on to the Hip. They love it.

I've always loved Paul's playing on the outrow on this song, especially live. You really can hear his influence when you listen to his solo album.
This is the best version of the best song.
Saw them three times in two countries, Gordy was unreal. Wish he was still here. Rest In Peace, amazing poet man.

First thing, we'd climb a tree

Or sit silently
And listen to our thoughts
With illusions of someday
Casting a golden light

This is our life

And I had a feverish dream
With revenge and doubt
Tonight, we smoke them out
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
Stare in the mornin' shroud
And then the day began
I tilted your cloud
You tilted my hand
Rain falls in real time
And rain fell through the night
No dress rehearsal
This is our life
But that's when the hornet stung me
And I had a serious dream
With revenge and doubt
Tonight, we smoke them out
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
You are ahead by a century
And disappointin' you
Is gettin' me down
Thanks
