you have a gift for explaining something naturally and succinctly. I've watched and read A LOT about helicopters and your explained some things that were like "ah ha, that makes sense now".... great video.
I cannot believe I've discovered your channel so late, genuinely the best I've found for flight simulation. You explain everything so well, if you're not already a teacher/instructor you should definitely consider becoming one!
This is a fantastic explanation heli basics in MSFS. I've been building +flying and crashing RC helis for 10-15 years now. This video is spot on. Subscribed and thumbs up. thank you.
I remember playing Comanche 3 on a 50 lb crt monitor listening to Chocolate starfish and hotdog flavored water 🤣. Learning to fly choppers will be my weekend project
I managed to take off in the NY introduction to the same chopper. It was already burning and turning.. just had to pull up on the collective and apply some foot pedal to compensate. I crashed several times and then got the hang of it. Next up I plan to do a ground start.
came here by random. i guess you are planing to do more of those videos? you got my subscription of course 👍🏻 i have flown helos for 2 years now in DCS, so this is not completely new to me, but the way you are explaining this feels like you are doing this for a living, arent you? :) hope you can explain how the force trim works in this things!
Could you go over the best helicopter controller setups for at home? I know I have seen some out there but, just wondering if there are any other options ... under $1,000. Thanks!
Great video as always Pat. What controller are you using for the helicopter? Do you recommend a game pad or a joystick or something else altogether? Thanks for doing this!!
Joystick with a throttle or a hotas will make a huge difference in your muscle memory and ability to make sense of what's happening. A game pad doesn't have the ability to leave a control in place such as the collective. It always returns to center.
really simply and straight forward. My only questions is slightly technical. With the governor on - do you have to set full throttle to allow the governor to have full range of control?
Check your bindings, by default on some hardware the throttle axis for fixed wing can end up controlling both throttle and collective, which will fight against the governor throttle settings
With the helicopter, it happens to me that the stick gets stuck for a few seconds, causing me to fall. And I don't understand how to fix it, while it never happens with planes! :(
Nice vidéo, exactly what I was looking for after 132 crashes in the first 20 seconds 🙃...but please if it's possible just speak a little bit slower, when I understand the point you are already two ideas away...just like my helicopter so far 😆!!
question, i've mapped my controls... hopefully correctly... when i click on ready to fly, rotors already spinning etc... how do i go ready to fly with a dark helicopter so that i can follow your steps... thus knowing everything is right... at the moment, when i get into heli/rotor spinning and pull collective all that ends happening is looks like engine rpm goes up, then down and then rotor rpm comes down.
I could not get the "propeller pitch" to work as my throttle. This is the problem I am having. The throttle does move when you use a mouse, but I want to move the throttle with my twistgrip throttle on my MaxFlightStick helicopter control collective. Nobody seems to know the answer to this. Help ne please if you know how to get the throttle to work, and what the controller assignment is called.
It’s called: collective control. And yes, there are products avalible for home sims. Though not as widely available as joysticks and steering wheels as those are very niche products and can be emulated with good HOTAS.
I had the same issue. Go to cockpit views in your keyboard profile and set shortcuts for 'Translate cockpit view backwards and forwards so you can get in front of the collective and then spin around. Then save the view as a custom view. Watch this video if you need any further help. th-cam.com/video/l-jJ84klwLg/w-d-xo.html
As a noob to flying helicopters (don't care much for planes) would have been nice for more explanation - e.g what do you mean by "crack the throttle" ? at around 6:30 in the video?
i take off for half a second then fall back to the ground and cant spool up again. even when i start with everything on. I even turned every single assist back on and still nothing
This game is a piece of shit ok Xbox. You’d have to be a professional pilot for 10 plus years to even play or enjoy it. I just wanted to fly around my neighborhood but I can’t even start the damn thing.
How the hell do you set the views to look back over to the throttle/collective to start the engine? I've tried for 2 hours and am fed up now. I am sick of the dozens of updates in MSFS, which take hours to download and then without any help files whatsoever. I'm at the stage of ditching this programme altogether!
@@paulmason2369 go ahead and ditch the program, if your having this much of an issue with the camera then there’s no telling what other concepts of the sim will baffle you. Probably lots.
@@paulmason2369 there are several transition keys you can use in cockpit view - i use forward, backward and rotate up/down/left/right etc. That will allow you to pan the camera around the cockpit to and use the back and forward to move in or around objects. I have it set to a hat and a rocker switch. I then save the view once i get there. I am sure there are tutorials out there to show you how to do.
@@sparkymarky68 Thanks for the advice. I've found now that there are no default keys set for forwards and backwards. Once these are set obviously it helps massively.
So as he mentioned at the beginning. The rotors turn in either direction. The helicopter is balanced for cruising altitude which means at lower altitudes it will have a slight rotation on the helicopter which you have to counter with the pedals until you get high enough. The same applies for the pitch of the helicopter. In some cases you will have to takeoff with the stick aiming forward as the helicopter will pitch backwards as it leaves the ground

Great tutorial, I've been flying DCS Huey for about 100 hrs and i still watched the whole thing just to fill me in for MSFS helis, Cheers!
Thank god this will be a series. I can't land this thing at all. Just thunk against the ground every time!
Just remember to deactivate the helicopter assists. They are activated by default which is incredibly stupid.
That sh*t is annoying AF.
how do i turn it off
How do you turn it off on Xbox?
@@owenlien1593 Go to settings, assistance options, piloting assistance and you can turn off cyclic and tail rotor assistance
DCS helicopters are unrivaled
I would suggest the ones in Aerofly FS 2 are as good.
and actually fly-able XD

I couldn't even get the heli started. This helped. Thanks!
perfect explanation for a newbie starting up a chopper & gaining hover time. Thx
Great video. Super well explained and thoughtfully put forward. Subbed and can’t wait for the next one.

No, the governor takes over the throttle completely once activated.
Can the starter button and all the other start-up switches etc be mapped or are some hidden i.e. screen/mouse only?

I can fly the Apache and UH-1 in DCS, fairly easily... MSFS, not so much.
