The Beginnings of the World’s Biggest Boy Band | A Video Essay

  • I thought it would be a good idea to revisit BTS’ discography (because of course it is). And now that they’re not making music together for quite a while, I might actually have enough time to go through all of their albums before they come back and give me more to analyze (probably not tho). I’d love to go through each one of their eras and discuss them with you, and of course, we’ll have to start at the beginning.

    02:57 What Went Into Their Debut

    THE TOPIC OF CULTURAL APPROPRIATION
    ARMYs are really good at pretending BTS are perfect angels who never did something wrong, but that is just untrue, obviously. In their debut era, they have repeatedly appropriated Black culture. Mistakes have definitely been made and it’s necessary to talk about them. However, I don’t think it is my place to talk about it, so I encourage you to educate yourself and then form an opinion on that matter. Here are some links to videos that educate on cultural appropriation in general, Black culture in Kpop, the mistakes BTS have done regarding racism, appropriation, colorism etc., that voice Black opinions on that matter:

    I hope you’ll enjoy this video! It took me more hours, nerves and Word documents with different drafts than I’d like to admit. I love talking about BTS and I think there are a lot of things in their career (especially in their earlier years!) that we don’t talk about enough.
    And there is absolutely no way I can put it all in a 45-minute video. So please add everything and anything that comes to mind regarding these three albums and era! And especially if you’re an OG Army, let me know what that era was like as a fan! 😊
    Thank you for watching!

      What is runch randa? RM's real name is Kim namjoon

    • @ruthfischer7615
      @ruthfischer7615 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sierradupont6607 Runch Randa and varietions of that name were his underground Rapper stagename. He lists them in one of the Cyphers (not sure if it was the first one).

    • @ruthfischer7615
      @ruthfischer7615 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Kim Namjoon was at an audition for another underground label but forgot his lyrics during the second one. Rapper Sleepy seems to have recorded him and left him with his phonenumber. Sometimes afterwards - like usual in SK - Sleepy went out drinking with Pdogg and let him listen to the recording. Pdogg - a highly gifted producer - noticed the talent, too, and brought it to "Hitman" Bang's attention.
      Jung Hoseok was btw signed first of all of them but since the label had no training room trained in his hometown and was only later attached to the project of BTS. He moved in at the 24th of december 2010.
      So why the change from a Rapgroup to an Idol group?
      In early 2011 they looked at a report of their finances. They were not good (helps that the other signed artists all did not actually have exclusiv contracts with them and all but Lee Hyun did not resign with them - later I think - which was actually predictable) and so everyone that had not something that could not wait was told to make an asignment what would actually bring them out of red numbers.
      The answer?
      an Idol group.
      Fun Fact:
      Jin and JK to this day "fight" who is the forth member. Why?
      Because Jin met Namjoon first but was unsure of signing (he was caught with the hint that a lot of Idols went into acting) while JK - who was scouted by the labels at a talentshow Superstar K3 - seems to have seen or heard a Rap by Namjoon that convinced him to sign with Big Hit which he signed before Jin.
      Kim Taheyung was signed in late summer/early fall of 2011.
      I'm under the impression that the infamous meme of the second audition by Bang was actually in the middle of 2011 but not 100% sure. (It is in "the Rise of Bangtan"-series)
      "Dated" for Jin's dream is not the word I would use. It's a reflection of the society he lives in. I think his thinking has changed since than a bit (and he always wanted to cook WITH his wife) Nevermind that even now female entertainers have to give a press conference to say that they are not feminist or they would lose their job because in SK it is still translated as "men hating". Was it in late 2020 when the government gave out a paper what a women should do before she went to the hospital to give birth like pre-cooking for multiple weeks and making sure her husband knows which numbers to call to order food etc.? And since than they voted for a reactionary government with very oldtime views.
      I may also point out that what happened to "youth" in SK is a little bit harder than in western Cultures. See for example "n-po generation" and "hope-torture" (again: "The Rise of Bangtan" shows that in the episodes 2 and 3) SK has one of the highest youth sucide rates in the world: they also learn on average 15 hours a day. Because their future will be decided by one test that decides their university - they may even repeat a year to get a better result - since it is one of the only ways to escape their lower social rank and earn enough to found their own family.
      BTW I could live with a bit more neutality instead of the judgemental call-out cancel cultur. Because that gets old real fast. Please stop othering which does not fit into your "moral majority".
      Is it perfect?
      No, but a reflection of their environment in SK - one they are some of the first (males) to question - and not formed against their own cultur at that time but a reflection how (male) teenagers think - they are at that point a reflection of it and on the verge to help change it. Stop undermining someone else struggle/development, please. That makes you only sound like a colonizer: "my cultur is the best." and shows a lot of your own insecurity.
      Skip the explanation or keep it short but please leave out the "superior sounding" judgement.
      "Just One Day" a fan-favorite?
      It's more often forgotten then remembered from my experience with reactors. It's their most "Idol" track which is why outsiders like it as a guilty pleasure but the majority of Army seem to ignore it's existence. (personally I find it boring but that is me)
      "Spinebreaker"'s call out of poor youth that trys to follow trends they can't afford is the loud part of the track. The song also mentions that the members may wear the expensive clothes... but they pay for it with their own earned money. And that is a difference.
      Let me also point out something.
      Most "fans" of artists fall in love with the artists first works and hate the artist that changes from it, calling them "sell-outs". While a lot of Army don't do that and know better that does not mean that it didn't happen after for example "Dark 'n' Wild". They don't want "growth". They say th first drop it's probably the best - part of it is the structure: their first drop - because of the industry push (that BTS couldn't have and didn't want) - is already big.
      Which is one of the reasons BTS is so refreshing. Their change is real and "authentic" (as much as I hate that word as it is very problematic). Quiet a few artist (have to) stay in their lane and make the same music or fall from grace or are not even recognized when they change something.
      ... and there you go again! Getting snippy and arrogant because they are finally getting what they deserve at least in money. 🙄
      Sounds to me like you are jealous.
      Yoongi still called out capitalism in D-Day especially in "Haegeum". Social critic is still there and should be. They have earned it.
      How about sorting yourself out before you comment on BTS again?
      Because you sound like an exil/manti that can't let go of her nostalgic "youth" and does not want to deal with reality of life. BB at least never liked them to begin with.
      I had to grit my teath through your judgment and arrogance in your criticism but I can't anymore and I'm skipping the end.
      I had thought I could keep this among the video essays, lectures and documentaries of BTS that are at least okay if not outright good.
      If you want something better:

      please watch on the later channel *"Why* *we* *love* *tortured* *artists"*

    The section about their song "Like"- for whatever reason I don't find the jealous-ex-boyfriend-who-doesn't-accept-the-relationship-is-over lyrics disturbing. I don't think song lyrics need to be moral. Same with War of Hormone. In your head, you think worse things probably, at times. When you break up, and your ex has a new girlfriend, many girls will feel insecure, talk shit, etc. You will probably still feel slightly possessive, maybe sad, maybe angry- but all of this are emotions, and I think they also deserve to be expressed- and channeling those emotions to song lyrics is just about the healthiest thing you can do about it. War of hormone is a bit sexist but honestly at times I will, in my head, oversexualize a guy. It is important, however, for the artist to add that their song lyrics are not always morally right, because our thoughts and feelings aren't and fans should accept that and learn to look at things differently. The songs don't always need to be our moral compass, they can just be expression of our emotions. War of hormone to me sounds like a literal description of young boys who get curious after girls start wearing bras to school (this is very heteronormative, but then again the song kind of leaves no room for alternative interpretation), and then thinks that seeing a model in a bikini is all they need to know about women. It's almost the coming-of-age, wildly inappropriate fantasies still somewhat contained and toned down honestly. I would love to hear something similar, from a female perspective, or not so cis-centered. But I think my point stays the same, expressing feelings this way is fine, as long as discrimination, hatred and unhealthy behaviors stay in art only. And fans in general should know to discern which feelings can be accepted and acted upon and which feelings are inappropriate.
    In short, you might want Jungkook to step on you, and you feeling that way is completely valid and fine. You might even write a cringy tweet saying that same thing, or write a poem about 100 reasons why he's hot. But that doesn't mean you should oversexualize him, or go to a fansign and force him with a gun to step on you.

    Beautifully thought out essay. Thank you. Perhaps its' because I'm way older and can remember a time when misoginy was much harsher that I view the "problematic" bits in these albums with a milder bent. As for "Just One Day", that song convinced me that I can sing in Korean. Best dance practice ever!

    • @wandering_thoughts
      @wandering_thoughts  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Haha yes, the dance practice is amazing!
      I agree, the misogyny is "mild" in comparison to other artists' songs, but each of these lyrics still hurts a bit. Maybe that's because the BTS members have shown vastly different mindsets over the last few years and that's what we as fans have accustomed to. And to see how they used to speak about girls in their songs upsets me more because of that, because of that stark contrast.

      @@wandering_thoughts I needed a literal week to cool down on this. It's just that you write so well that it's really hard to come to a conclusion (that and because I agree with everything in the video). I guess the only thing I could try to expand on is that I really admire how you emphasize the problematic parts of this album without ignoring the hard work the guys put into their music.
      I agree that the first bangtan can get cringey in the lyrics, only a part of what they were as people and for that reason, I find the criticism that expects early bangtan to be the same as their current versions as stupid. For God's sake, they were barely 20 years old. And even at that age they were able to speak to many people around the world who, although they do not share a culture, understand their messages (including me, who until I met them never believed that someone foreign, much less Asian, could understand the experience of a Latin American student).
      It just really like them a lot, and I really appreciate you talking about it. Please don't stop making these videos, they are greatly appreciated. Sending you lots of love from Mexico
