What makes Dis-ease such a satisfying listening experience is its song structure. While the vibe and beat all say 90’s hip-hop, the song is really a densely packed pop format. Dis-ease’s pattern of “Verse A - Pre-chorus - Chorus - Verse B - Verse C - Pre-Chorus - Chorus - Bridge - Break - Chorus - Outro” outlines the complex aural journey built to pull in and bring the listener along. Verses that set up and embellish the song ideas; a Pre-Chorus that brings tension and lift; a Chorus (the catchiest, most memorable part of any song) that conveys the song’s main melodies, lyrics and idea; the Bridge that brings new elements to shift the song’s pattern; the Break that builds anticipation and transitions into the final reprise of the Chorus into the resolve of the Outro. That Dis-ease has so many parts shows how well-thought and well-planned this song is. Each part supports each other and is needed to make a solid and fulfilling song. Kudos to j-hope as the primary writer and composer of this song and the producers who built this flawless composition.
That conclusion genuinely made me scream. “They are iller then ever” your way with words and structure never fails to amaze me.
What makes Dis-ease truly the greatest song on BE, is it's word play and the deep meanings behind them, set to an upbeat tune that makes you want to sing along, get up and dance. The structure of the song is genius! From the catchy beginning beats, (produced by Grammy award winning producer, Ivan Jackson of Brasstracks, j-hope, and BH production staff) to the rap verses, pre chorus into chorus, bridge and all that almost unnoticeable, yet wouldn't be as good without, background adlibs, finally back into that beginning beat again dying out to end the song. Just one listen, and if you know anything about BTS' discography, you know it has j-hope's unique flavor of genius written all over it! It's why it has been discussed at length by every music loving critic, journalists, TH-cam reactors, and even BTS themselves. It's topped multiple year end "Best of 2020" song critics lists. If Dis-ease were a movie, it would be the one that didn't bring the masses into theaters, but quietly got all the critics attention, geting nominated for and eventually winning an Oscar for Best Picture, instantly becoming a legendary classic. It's that good! If you aren't listening to Dis-ease, you need to. Close your eyes and give it a good listen. Really hear the way the song transitions throughout. Elliot! What a stellar analysis! You somehow managed to encapsulate all of the debates brought to the fore by the Dynamite era by analyzing just one song. I particularly appreciated the explanation and recognition that industry support made a difference in Dynamite's success but in no way diminished its importance as an artistic move by BTS. Americans esp are so used to success and art living in separate spheres it's nearly impossible to recognize it when the two merge. I'm in the Trojan Horse camp btw since Dynamite, in part, led to Hybe's purchase of Ithaca... which could arguably change the game come next comeback. Would love to hear your thoughts on that!
