In my experience defragging HDDs very often will cause them to fail sooner. They have to defrag for hours most of the times, with constant writes and reads that will cause too much heat and physical wear on mechanical components because of that intense work that lasts for hours non-stop. I'm not saying defragmentation is a bad thing, it actually improves the disk performance but at the cost of putting the hard drive to a lot of stress without a single pause.

This was a lot of complex information laid out very quickly which for me made it a little difficult to wrap my head around. So I watched it again to let the information sink in. Being that I am not the most tech savvy person I never knew to defrag my hard drive to make my system run better. Thank you for explaining how the hard drive works and how defragmentation will help.

@@ellonysman right click on your C: drive in file explorer -> click properties -> navigate to where you can check your drives health (I forget what it's called) and there you can defrag the disk. You can also find this setting in Control Panel but it's been a bit since I've used Windows so I don't remember where it's at in there

@@ellonysman don't defrag SSD's which most newer PC's have. But if you have a HDD then your system will automatically defrag it every few weeks

I think that you covered most of windows but you should make a small comment or annotation saying that both OSX (HFS+) and Linux (Usually ext3 or ext 4) do not suffer from fragmentation due to their better file systems. In fact have you done a tech quickie on file systems? That's a good idea
He is a huge windows fanboy, so complimenting HFS+ is not something I see him doing.
Don't forget XFS!
He has covered OSX stuff in the past and even Linux with a guide on Synology so it's not completely out of the question that he should mention em imho.
actually, ext2 is worst filesystem for linux, it corrupts files so easily if youi dont unmount them safely, worst is ext3 and ext4, they do journalling that stress SSD for good, these filesystems are not optimized for SSD, HFS+ well cant comment on that.
remle ikawura I think I'd much rather let journaling do its thing on an ssd. The lesser write amounts isn't worth it with ext3/4. I don't know how much journaling writes exactly, but with the stress tests showing that SSDs are much more durable than they used to be, who cares? Maybe a few MB a day? Big whoop. They say 50GB a day will probably kill an SSD in 20 years, I plan on upgrading again in that time. I knew someone who disabled journaling on their system, it crashed during an update (Arch Linux) and he was screwed, ended up having to reinstall the OS. There are plenty of other modern filesystems for Linux but I haven't researched them enough for SSDs :) I don't have any old Linux SSDs for experience either, just got my first one for Linux 2 months back. The Samsung 840 Pro that runs windows is doing great though! Going since April 2013. We'll see if my Seagate is durable at all

I think this sort of defragmentation program should exist:
A defrag program that allows you to make groups of files and put those files in the same place (physically) on the drive when you defrag and (just as a little cherry on top) a function that can monitor what files open when you launch an application and group them for you (you will have to tell it to start and stop monitoring manually). It should also allow you to prioritise file and the higher priority a file is, the more likely it is to go on a spot on the drive that can be accessed faster (on the outermost parts of the drive). If a defragmentation program exists that does these things (or at least the first thing) please let me know.

Since I'm the PC emergency for my family I always explained defragmentation as sorting out a messy drawer, putting everything nicely in order so it's easier to find.
Windows 7 does actually let you defrag an SSD, it won't do it automatically but it will let you do it manually. Windows 8 and higher doesn't do it automatically and won't even let you do it manually. And You really don't need to defrag that often, about once a month. Modern drives and filesystems aren't affected by fragmentation as much as they used to be and defragging a HDD too often can wear out the drive.

I used it, and found it to pretty good. It offers a tons of stats about your hard drive(temperature, read/write speed etc). For the defragmentation part, it does take a lot of time but the results are very good. I would recommend people to use it...

If you're running versions of Linux other than Debian 8 or Ubuntu 14.04 you need cron a trim. The os doesn't do it itself

I don't think some newer operating systems allows that any more, but, it could probably be done manually.
Copy all files out from it to a safe location, then format the floppy disk (I think it's a FAT12 filesystem), then paste the files back xD
Actually floppy's could be defragmented yes, back in the DOS days. The more free space you had on the floppy the faster defragmentation was.

Defragmenting a floppy could take a while, cause a floppy disk was only able to read an X amount of blocks at the same time. It was better to simply quick format it and then copy your data on it, it would put that in just one track. Defragmenting was only needed if you technically, put files on, delete them, put new files back on and repeat the proces for a while. THAT is fragmentation.

I remember when I had my first Franklin PC and added a 10MB hard drive I got a shareware disk that had a defragmenting program on it that was fun watching the files being lifted and moved around I also used one to reset the sections for faster response/write 😄

Does defragmentation deteriorate the hard drive?...as in, you only want to do it occasionally and maybe not on a daily basis
No, you have it mixed up. A HDD should be defragmented every month or so, or after you write or remove large files (such as video games). A SSD should not be defragmented at all.
If you're running a computer with Windows 7 or newer, this is no problem of concern since it "defragments" for an HDD and "optimizes" for a SSD automatically.
ok i understand but im wondering if defragmenting the disk too oftn can damage it, the same way a battery only has so many charge cycles. is doing it regularly a bad idea?
If you wanna get really technical, yes, it will be stressing the drive with the excessive amount of write cycles compared to the amount from daily use. However, hard drives have a much longer life span than SSDs in the sense that they have a far higher amount of theoretical write cycles before components will begin to fail. So in other words, don't worry about damaging a hard drive with defragmentation, it won't hurt anything. Would I recommend doing it daily though? Not really. All you'd be doing then is putting excessive stress on the drive without even the smallest increase in performance. If you really wanna defrag stuff a lot, do it biweekly. Don't worry though, odds are you'll be replacing your hard drive before even comes close to its maximum amount of write cycles.

Check to make sure TRIM is enabled, open CMD as an Admin and enter this "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify" if it gives you a 0 TRIM is enabled, if it gives you a 1 TRIM is disabled so enter this line "fsutil behavior set DisableDeleteNotify 0". Windows 7 doesn't have an "optimize" for SSDs, just make sure de-fragmentation is disabled for the SSD. In all honesty even on a HDD you don't need to defrag that often.

File systems used by Macs and most Linux distros are so good you don't need to defrag!

It's because OSX and Linux are both based on Unix and Windows is based on NT

it kinda depends on the desired effect of storing data. when newer versions of windows (formatted with ntfs) store data on the disk, it tries to move all of the data as closely as possible, with very little buffer between clusters, in an effort to reduce drive head movement. of course, this compact method of storage will require occasional defragmentation to reduce incontiguous file clusters on the drive and save some performance. ext4 (and, i'm assuming, macintosh file systems) write file data clusters with outragiously large buffers between files in an effort to keep file clusters contiguous across the disk, no matter how much the files are changed. this means more of the physical space on the disk is used, and the head has to do a little more work if accessing more than one file. also, it is still possible to have fragmented files on ext4, but it is significantly reduced given the write philosophy.
personally, i like ntfs a little more because i do not mind occasional maintenance to hone performance, but hey, to each their own

You should always run spinrite on your drive. At least once a year, minimum. It fixes a ton of issues with your hard drive (mechanical and SSD), including repairing issues that could, in the future, spread and kill the drive. Spinrite will fix any fixable problem with your hard drive. If your drive is dead/dying, run spinrite and recover your data. Just bought a brand new drive? Run spinrite on it and see if it is healthy. In fact, you can buy 3 hard drives, run spinrite on each, pick the healthiest drive, and return the other 2 and get your money back. This way you know your brand new drive is perfectly happy and healthy. Nothing sucks more than buying a brand new drive only to have it randomly die a month later because it had some hidden faults.
Spinrite is the best.
***** Spinrite does multiple things to repair the drive, but the mechanism is showing the drive SMART system where it is faulty and the drive fixing itself. SMART is good at fixing problems, but it is terrible at finding problems, Spinrite shows SMART the problems and SMART fixes them. Spinrite works by flipping all the bits on the drive then flipping them back. It does it from multiple angles of attack at varying velocities and in special orders in order to, as efficiently as possible, attack every bit on the drive from every angle and velocity. Sometimes a bit will work properly if you approach it slowly but not when you approach quickly or vice versa. Spinrite attacks in every single way. Once it shows the drive that a bit cannot be read, the drive will respond using its own systems to fix the issue. Generally it will copy the data to another region on the disk, and then permanently remove the damage region from availability. The system has proven to be equally effective on HDD and SSD.

I once read a great analogy for this topic:
Think of your hard drive like a house, and the files that you store are the things in that house. Naturally you would keep all the food in the fridge, clothes in the closet, bed in your room, etc. However, if you were to start putting things in random places, like, putting some food under the bathroom sink, then some more food on a shoe rack, and maybe a phone charger in the fridge... getting stuff done efficiently would be nearly impossible.
Defregging basically reorganizes everything in a logical way so that you end up with a nice, neat, tidy, and efficient house. And really, that's pretty much the gist of what defragging does for a hard drive.

Defagging doesn't delete files; the standard windows defrag utility should be perfectly safe. You should be doing regular backups anyway of your important files anyway though. (I, an internet stranger, don't want to be responsible for any false peace of mind that crumbles due to a totally coincidental hard drive failure).
If you're talking about an SSD, those don't need defagging at all.

Thanks for the explanation, defragmenting really makes sense to me now! I just hope if fixes my laptop, my stupid Intel core i3 hp pavilion x360 that takes about 6 mins to boot up and literally can't do anything at all, I'm about to throw it in the bin.
